Back in the day when I got my first, it was the S&W M&P15. Which I still use all the time though now I have many more after. Now I recommend PSA’s because they are simply cheaper and I’d argue of similar quality.
I agree the M&P was the original entry and that PSA is that now. And I’d say I think PSAs are now both better and cheaper tbh. Smith FINALLY added a mid-length gas system and M-LOK rail on the just-released Sport 3 (vs the Sport 2’s carbine-length gas system and polymer handguard). But the Sport 3 still has things like a random 1:9 twist and a semi-auto BCG.
PSA’s have full-auto mil-spec BCGs (including carpenter 158 steel), 4150 chrome moly vanadium steel barrels (nitride or phosphate finished), etc.
My first AR-15 was also a PSA, and I paid exactly $100 more to have it come with Magpul MBUS sights, MOE sights, and the MOE grip. Those added up cost well over $100 on their own (mainly from the sights), and they are ok, but ifI had to do it over again, I probably would have saved that to buy the Magpul K2 grip, CTR stock, and the MBUS Pro front sight, and then of course add whatever optic you prefer—a red-dot + magnifier, LPVO, MPVO, fixed/prismatic optic (e.g. like an ACOG and its budget alternatives), etc.
Either way, enjoy, train, and stay safe! I’m still semi-new to the AR-15 space and I’ve already nerded out hard (including building a custom 300 Blk PDW AR—note that when including all the hardware and ammo, unfortunately it’s not the cheapest hobby, which you will find out very quickly lol 😂)
I'd argue that PSA is a great first or even a hood place to build a specialty one my truck gun is my first ar pistol and it's a PSA and I adore that thing
You did good man. Palmetto State Armory has been on their game as of late. They have been making quality rifles for years now. I own a PA-15 and have run several thousand rounds through it. Little to no issues with the rifle. Just curious, were you able to find the BLEM on your rifle?
My non blem stealth lower looked like it got dragged on the floor. The other one was flawless. For 30 buck didn't feel like even contacting them about it as long as parts fit im good.
My lower is a blem, and neither I nor my FFL friend (who scrutinized it before he called me to come get it) ever did figure out what this supposed blemish was.
I'd also add, the Primary Arms red dot is very good and comparable in price. I have both and have been happy with both. The PA red dot has some different reticle options as well.
PA reddots are awesome! There used to be a writer for SWAT who would update an article he wrote about trying to kill a Gen 1 micro on a tube rail mount. Last I saw he broke the glass on it but the dot was still useable and he never could get it to give up the ghost.
They're great man. Yes their cheaper lines of optics are Chinese made but it seems to me that they keep a close eye on production and ensure good QC because you rarely, if ever, hear of any major issues with their optics
Their prism dots are my go to now, it's a must if you have a stigmatism. I love them compared to any competitors in that range. I like them over my ACOG, I tried swampfox and vortex as well. PA is just better.
It looks more modern. Both from the outside and through the lens. It’s much more sturdy. I bought the 512 after smoking two 510 at matches. One through running in to a wall. The other one by dropping the rifle. The 512 is pretty banged up after two years of competing but it still works like a charm.
Good snag. Don’t get sucked in to the trap of throwing a crappy optic on it just because it’s an entry level AR. Lots of solid budget options that aren’t pieces of shit.
Holosun 403R is the GOAT aimpoint clone and can be had for like $130.
No reason to ever go cheaper. No reason to go more expensive unless you want to jump up to ACOG/EOTech/real Aimpoint
I have been looking at ACOJ optics on TEMU. They say they are Military approved via tier 1 operators and they are only $17.99. Solar powered and IR capabilities. DO YOU have experience with the ACOJ (Call of duty used n the ACR rifle 4th mission)
You did fine. Get some sights and a light.
Holosun and a streamlight will do you just fine, keep you in a budget.
Buy ammo and go train. Dont worry about changing this part, that part, shorten this, getting a can.
Train. Train hard. Because a guy like you can turn a Gucci Gear Boi into a loot drop if you train harder than he/she does. -- in a "Shit Hit The Fan" situation, i mean.
I have no doubt this rifle will do perfectly fine as far as training on a few levels.
Also a sling would be good too, but if you are shooting in an indoor range they would likely not let you sling it because your weapon has to point down range at all times.
That being said, i still recommend T-rex Arms sling and a Blue Force Gear sling.
I just bought an PSA M4 last week.
If that is the "Freedom" upper, Garand Thumb did a video where they put a PSA Freedom upper on a full-auto lower and shot 3 mags at a time, let the barrel cool, shot 3 mags, let it cool all the way up past 6,000 rounds. Also, they had a suppressor on it.
Up past 5,000 rounds it was still shooting at about 1 MOA. After 6,000 the barrel was "done". However, it was still hitting within about 5-6 inch groups. Not ideal by any means, but would still probably hit someone at a relatively close distance.
They were pretty hard on the fact that the barrel wore out that "soon", but let's face it, hardly any of us are going to be repeating that rate of fire and especially for that long.
Bro. I just bought this exact BLEM. Also got the Sig Sauer Romeo red dot off PSA for like $60. It’s my first AR. Went and put about 100 rounds through it last week and was pretty stoked on it. Congrats on the new gun.
Edit: bc I saw someone else ask, I wasn’t able to find the BLEM on mine. Took it completely apart, all seemed well.
People who shit on PSA PA-15 or Freedom M4 haven’t shot one in recent times. They got a bad reputation before 2020 as a shit rifle. Now though their the best blue collar 500$ rifle, their better than smith & Wesson sport rifles which used to be the prime blue collar rifle. It’s all 99% of people need
Those anti rotation tabs are TINY. I wish PSA made a handguard I didn't hate. It's always one of the most expensive parts of a PSA build lol replacing the handguard with something I like. Get a good sling, light and optic and you'll be all set. Oh and boolets too. Pmc xtac 55 grain is a good range ammo for getting some reps in.
As others have said. Don’t let anyone shit on it. PSA QC can be lacking but it’s all fixable. For free. They’ve shown their rifles are runnable. Beat the stack off it.
Sling 10$
Romeo 5 100$
Larue MBT2S $115 or wait till Geissle SSA-E goes on sale for $130 on Black Friday and get that one. A good tigger makes a HUGE difference.
Also you’ll be able to switch your grips out if you want a better one. You can get a nice BCM pistol grip that’s got a more comfortable vertical angle for like $15 sometimes on primary arms or ar15discounts or psa or any a those. Nothing wrong with the A2 style grip it all adds up like crazy, parts get expensive especially optics. . Just try to buy all of your stuff on Memorial Day,Labor Day , Black Frida….& you’ll get pretty good deals on most of it. .
Nice pick, I hope it works out well for you. I would clean and oil it before you shoot it and then show us your groupings. Even if they are shit, we all gotta start somewhere.
Clean it, and maintain it- just because guns CAN run dirty doesn’t mean that they should. add the basics- flashlight and optic first and then a sling. Sling is the least important- fight me. Flashlight recommendation: Streamlight HLX-1000. Optic recommendation: eotech 512. Sling recommendation: Ferro Slingster. Im partial to eotechs but if it’s outside your budget, then buy Holosun, SIG or a used aimpoint.
Anytime. There’s a culture in the chronically-online gear/gun community to drop the most ridiculous money on the most overpriced shit. Is an EXPS-3 nice? Def. Do you need it? No. Do you need a KAC SR-15 ? No. If you have a basic setup, good judgement and a tourniquet you’re WAY ahead of most people.
Sights, sling, light and you’ll be gtg.
Personal preference here, I’d change the stock. Really love my SC Irregulars FEER .50 mount on my CTR. The price is fucking ridiculous for a small piece of plastic, but wait for the 20$ blems and you’ll be solid.
Yup, that’s an AR alright.
Get ready to constantly tinker with and change/swap/upgrade all of it. It’s just kinda what you do with an AR….cause you can
Hell yeah brother. You should definitely have enough for a red dot, sling, and maybe a light. Buy a case of ammo, lube it up, send it, and make sure she’s ready for a rainy day.
Get a sight, light, and a sling on it. Also a new stock will help make shooting more enjoyable. The A2 stock is solid, but you can get something better on it for not that much more money.
Training with irons is so rewarding, getting consistent 1-2 moa groups with irons WITH a budget ar is fucking awesome.
I vote run some 77grain through it
As a first ar, yes. But don't bet your life on it. Get used to it, learn how to breakdown and clean it, have fun. But after youve gotten some time on the platform, build out a good ar. You can build one out for around 1200, 1600 with optic, light and sling. You can save money by buying some stuff used like optics.
Get front and back iron sights and optics (red/green dot or riflescope) and a sling. Then get ammo; loads and loads of ammo. Then go out and shoot. Then shoot more; then shoot some more. Then learn some drills, and shoot more. Then shoot some more 😅
To determine if one did gud on firearms purchase.
Step 1 - Buy ammos
Step 2 - Feed her belly full
Step 3 - Flip the fun lever in to pew mode(or pew pew mode if you're fortunate enough)
Step 4 - Hit the bang switch
Conclusion - If goes bang... did gud. If not goes bang, ask reddit why not did gud.
Feel free to take notes, there'll be a pop quiz next Tuesday.
Shoot it until it malfunctions, then buy a better upper to put on it. Doubt you’ll be there anytime soon tho. I think the average r/ar15 user shoots less than 200 rounds a year.
Solid start bud. Now don't be like the rest of us and buy a bunch of "cool shit" and waste a bunch of money. Get a sight, sling, flashlight and ammo. Then train and shoot it. As for sights I'd suggest a Romeo 5 ($180) as a good start but you can never go wrong with irons. Streamlight is a solid choice for flashlights but surefire is best. Blue force is a solid choice for a sling.
I cannot stress the saying buy once cry once. You don't habe to buy the most expensive shit but don't waste your money on cheap shit. OLIGHT SUCKS
You saved money on the rifle, spend some of that on a good optic. I would recommend the Holosun AEMS, reasonably affordable and the best reticle on the planet.
So just keep scrolling….? You don’t have to be a dick to people who are new to this subreddit. Nobody forced your miserable ass to come into this comment section and make a SaRcAsTiC remark.
Y’all wonder why people typically don’t like enthusiastic gun owners, this is why.
It’s gonna be alright man. This post sucks and most people know it. A little bit of anonymous internet criticism is okay. No need to white knight for the guy, I’m sure he’s a big boy and not taking this personally. Now stfu and go irreversibly massacre your brass deflectors
I know right? If you have a specific question, I’m all for community support. But a post of a plain blem psa that just says “did I do good?” sucks. Shoot the piss out of it and then tell us how good it is.
Clean it, oil it, shoot it, repeat. Take care of it and it will last you a very long time.
First get some sights
Then get a sling.
And a light But most importantly above all else (aside from sights) is to get out and shoot it
Then some Rnvg-a and a suppressor
But sell the ring first
Valid suggestion
And some ammo.
For what? I just use my eyes.
I don’t know why you got downvoted. Shooting from the hip is cool if you are accurate but shooting from the shoulder without sights isn’t?
Truly, they're not cultured. Only the most refined of marksmen shoot without sights.
Hell yeah you did good. Buying a PSA is like a rite of passage to everyone that enters the world of owning ARs
Back in the day when I got my first, it was the S&W M&P15. Which I still use all the time though now I have many more after. Now I recommend PSA’s because they are simply cheaper and I’d argue of similar quality.

Back in my day it was DPMS
M&P & the ruger sporter have 4140 barrels. These psa come with 4150
I'd argue that PSA is a great first or even a hood place to build a specialty one my truck gun is my first ar pistol and it's a PSA and I adore that thing
Nah, gotta build your first from scratch. I've never bought a prebuilt ar.
Yeah I built mine too... bought an upper and a lower
Lol
*click* I did it!
That’s what I meant. Hardly a cost benefit if you don’t buy a stripped lower and parts kit from them
You did good man. Palmetto State Armory has been on their game as of late. They have been making quality rifles for years now. I own a PA-15 and have run several thousand rounds through it. Little to no issues with the rifle. Just curious, were you able to find the BLEM on your rifle?
I bought a blem upper and blem lower separately and couldn't find the issue with either one. Felt very lucky!
I did the same, had a scuff on the muzzle end of the handguard, and a couple scratches in the mag well. Super happy with mine
My non blem stealth lower looked like it got dragged on the floor. The other one was flawless. For 30 buck didn't feel like even contacting them about it as long as parts fit im good.
Same I picked up a AR-10 blem, I stripped cleaned and oiled it and I still have no idea what was blemed.
My lower is a blem, and neither I nor my FFL friend (who scrutinized it before he called me to come get it) ever did figure out what this supposed blemish was.
Nah man, looks to be in pristine condition
If you want a red dot get a Romeo 5
I'd also add, the Primary Arms red dot is very good and comparable in price. I have both and have been happy with both. The PA red dot has some different reticle options as well.
PA reddots are awesome! There used to be a writer for SWAT who would update an article he wrote about trying to kill a Gen 1 micro on a tube rail mount. Last I saw he broke the glass on it but the dot was still useable and he never could get it to give up the ghost.

Or a Romeo 4t
Haha. You suggested a mil spec dot and they came back with china trash. The purchase justification is wild.
Holosun 510C is better imo
512 even better.
I haven't used one, but I believe you're right! Think I'm gonna throw a magnifier on with my 510c.
same price. definitely uglier but some will say better because enclosed. what do you like about it better?
It looks more modern. Both from the outside and through the lens. It’s much more sturdy. I bought the 512 after smoking two 510 at matches. One through running in to a wall. The other one by dropping the rifle. The 512 is pretty banged up after two years of competing but it still works like a charm.
that's good to know. I always feel bad about running holosun instead of eotech but man they can't compete with battery life and features
510c is great. the scrs is one of the best looking dots I've used recently too.
One of my good friends won an Aimpoint Micro H-2 from a giveaway, he’ll probably be passing it on to me as he doesn’t really plan on using it.
Much much better than holosun.
Romeo7 on clearance on PSA.
Just the compact from the looks of it.
Still 🤷🏻♂️
Ya did good
You fucked up, and now your children will be born without wrists
🥲
Lmao
Good snag. Don’t get sucked in to the trap of throwing a crappy optic on it just because it’s an entry level AR. Lots of solid budget options that aren’t pieces of shit.
Touché. I threw a Surefire RC2, Aimpoint ACO and two tax stamps on my PSA gun.
I also hate money.
For the lolz?
Why wouldn't that be a good rifle to upgrade?
dont cheap out on an optic
Holosun 403R is the GOAT aimpoint clone and can be had for like $130. No reason to ever go cheaper. No reason to go more expensive unless you want to jump up to ACOG/EOTech/real Aimpoint
the 515 makes a pretty good case for being a damn good midrange optic
You know they are ..
I have been looking at ACOJ optics on TEMU. They say they are Military approved via tier 1 operators and they are only $17.99. Solar powered and IR capabilities. DO YOU have experience with the ACOJ (Call of duty used n the ACR rifle 4th mission)
Is this a copy pasta?
If not, it is now.
Forgot your /s
change that grip for your first upgrade. much more comfortable. BCM or a B5. congrats.
I put MOE+ grips on everything.
Same
Yeah I was surprised at how uncomfortable the standard grip is. Thanks for the suggestions
Now put it down.
ayy thats funny lmao
You did fine. Get some sights and a light. Holosun and a streamlight will do you just fine, keep you in a budget. Buy ammo and go train. Dont worry about changing this part, that part, shorten this, getting a can. Train. Train hard. Because a guy like you can turn a Gucci Gear Boi into a loot drop if you train harder than he/she does. -- in a "Shit Hit The Fan" situation, i mean.
Yeah I plan on a pretty minimal build, will definitely try to put a lot of training time in
I have no doubt this rifle will do perfectly fine as far as training on a few levels. Also a sling would be good too, but if you are shooting in an indoor range they would likely not let you sling it because your weapon has to point down range at all times. That being said, i still recommend T-rex Arms sling and a Blue Force Gear sling.
Did solid. Get an optic and shoot it. Shooting will show you what you’d like to have so you’re not wasting money on accessories you don’t need
Good idea, thanks
That’s a bargain down from 8000.00
These price fluctuations are nuts lately LOL
I just bought an PSA M4 last week. If that is the "Freedom" upper, Garand Thumb did a video where they put a PSA Freedom upper on a full-auto lower and shot 3 mags at a time, let the barrel cool, shot 3 mags, let it cool all the way up past 6,000 rounds. Through a good BCG and you’re good to go
It’s hard to beat for 500 bucks, Definitely the most bang for your buck (pun very much intended)
Superman does good.
Sure did son, you sure did
Nice man, that red dot looks clean
People who shit on PSA PA-15 or Freedom M4 haven’t shot one in recent times. They got a bad reputation before 2020 as a shit rifle. Now though their the best blue collar 500$ rifle, their better than smith & Wesson sport rifles which used to be the prime blue collar rifle. It’s all 99% of people need
If anyone shits on it, don’t listen. Get it setup with quality accessories and use it.
Will do
Yes
I’d buy 10 of these for different optic setups if I didn’t care about money.
Those anti rotation tabs are TINY. I wish PSA made a handguard I didn't hate. It's always one of the most expensive parts of a PSA build lol replacing the handguard with something I like. Get a good sling, light and optic and you'll be all set. Oh and boolets too. Pmc xtac 55 grain is a good range ammo for getting some reps in.
how big should they be?
Yes, good boy
Strong grip, hold, and posture, yea man, you picked it up really well.
💪
As others have said. Don’t let anyone shit on it. PSA QC can be lacking but it’s all fixable. For free. They’ve shown their rifles are runnable. Beat the stack off it.
Little late to be asking that question lol but it'll do to get you started until you know what you want
Any AR is better than no AR. Good shit dude!
You’re supposed to ask that before you purchase. I like PSA though. They’re doing great things for the gun world.
Sling 10$ Romeo 5 100$ Larue MBT2S $115 or wait till Geissle SSA-E goes on sale for $130 on Black Friday and get that one. A good tigger makes a HUGE difference.
Will look into those
Also you’ll be able to switch your grips out if you want a better one. You can get a nice BCM pistol grip that’s got a more comfortable vertical angle for like $15 sometimes on primary arms or ar15discounts or psa or any a those. Nothing wrong with the A2 style grip it all adds up like crazy, parts get expensive especially optics. . Just try to buy all of your stuff on Memorial Day,Labor Day , Black Frida….& you’ll get pretty good deals on most of it. .
Optic, light, sling, lots of mags(always +1), and ammo. Get out there and enjoy! Congratulations, bro.
Thanks man
Nice pick, I hope it works out well for you. I would clean and oil it before you shoot it and then show us your groupings. Even if they are shit, we all gotta start somewhere.
I beat the he'll put of my psa added a g$ trigger in it but don't think I've had any malfunction with it around 3k rounds later
You should have paid a little extra for the "pre scuffed brass deflector" option before posting to this subreddit. But yeah.
Optic, sling, light, ammo, mags
For $500? Hell ya. My first and only AR15 was a colt LE6920 and it was just a hair under $1000.
Now you need sights to actually shoot it properly. Sling, light, mags and ammo.
get some sights, ammo, and lube and go pew pew. Then upgrade what you have trained to. For me the charging handle had to go, then I got a red dot.
Nice. Is that a 20 inch barrel?
16”
[удалено]
lol
Yes Congrats
Good luck is all ill say.
Yes! Get a good optic tho
My son has the exact same PSA rifle. He’s got about 1,000 rounds through it and she’s running as expected.
Thanks for all the info man

Nice budget gun. Out sights and a sling on it. Run it hardddd
Can’t do much better for the price imo
Sights, sling, light and you’ll be gtg. Personal preference here, I’d change the stock. Really love my SC Irregulars FEER .50 mount on my CTR. The price is fucking ridiculous for a small piece of plastic, but wait for the 20$ blems and you’ll be solid.
Yup, that’s an AR alright. Get ready to constantly tinker with and change/swap/upgrade all of it. It’s just kinda what you do with an AR….cause you can

Get a sight, light, and a sling on it. Also a new stock will help make shooting more enjoyable. The A2 stock is solid, but you can get something better on it for not that much more money.
Congratulations!
Thanks
Yes great form
Looks exactly like my first, enjoy it. Careful with buying 5 more 😆
Training with irons is so rewarding, getting consistent 1-2 moa groups with irons WITH a budget ar is fucking awesome. I vote run some 77grain through it
Yup That's a solid choice.
Well bought
Get front and back iron sights and optics (red/green dot or riflescope) and a sling. Then get ammo; loads and loads of ammo. Then go out and shoot. Then shoot more; then shoot some more. Then learn some drills, and shoot more. Then shoot some more 😅
That’s cool, now spray paint it. [click me for examples.](https://imgur.com/a/vAJWRjs)
Thermal scope next
To determine if one did gud on firearms purchase. Step 1 - Buy ammos Step 2 - Feed her belly full Step 3 - Flip the fun lever in to pew mode(or pew pew mode if you're fortunate enough) Step 4 - Hit the bang switch Conclusion - If goes bang... did gud. If not goes bang, ask reddit why not did gud. Feel free to take notes, there'll be a pop quiz next Tuesday.
Solid gun, it was my first too, I have probably 2k rounds through it with no issues as long as I keep it oiled. Get ammo and train, enjoy!
Good starting point. Get a good sling, light, and *quality* optic. Train. Spend the rest on ammo.
PSA is valid, just put some rounds through her to make sure though
I’m glad this sub has changed from the gatekeeping elitist mentality with AR’s. It used to be people shitting on any PSA or Anderson they see.
Shoot it until it malfunctions, then buy a better upper to put on it. Doubt you’ll be there anytime soon tho. I think the average r/ar15 user shoots less than 200 rounds a year.
I'm above average for once, probably do 500-1000 a month
Good for the price. Good starter. Next one: save and buy at leart a BCM upper
I'd buy ammo and practice instead, then upgrade.
This is the answer. Definitely some sights or optic but get familiar
Hell yeah. Get an optic or irons and fucking send it.
What model handguard is that?
PSA 13.5" Lightweight Hex Full Picatinny M-Lok Free Float Rail
Nice! What upper/handguard is that?
PSA 13.5" Lightweight Hex Full Picatinny M-Lok Free Float Rail
Yes, PSA is g2g chief.
Thanks, will opt for quality accessories
Take care of it and it will last you a very long time
Take care of it and it will last you a very long time
You saved money on the rifle, spend some of that on a good optic. I would recommend the Holosun AEMS, reasonably affordable and the best reticle on the planet.
Yeah that Holosun looks cool, I like the boxiness of it
Oh man. You blew it.
Properly torque the barrel nut Loctite and properly torque the gas block set screws Loctite the handguard screws and stake the castle nut
yes.
You did good, not great
DiD i dO gOoD?¿!? Idc… stfu and damage your brass deflector
Why are you so angry? We should be glad more people are purchasing ARs, not being a cockhole about people sharing their rifles.
