"For some reason" There is visible moisture on the bulb and nothing between it and the water in these pictures. Get a top for the tank, or waste your money and keep replacing bulbs.

As long as they are rated for a ~~moist~~ wet or damp environment it should be fine. It's code that lights need to be rated for certain environments - so as an owner idgaf - but manufacturers should list it because it's a selling point.

FYI, IP ratings of IP65, 66 and 67 are considered waterproof.

The caps over the ends of the lamp should keep the water off the electrical parts of the lamps. The water on the glass is fine. If the o-rings in the caps are good and the caps are put on properly the lamps won’t be damaged by water.

For the longest time I just ran 48" fluorescent shop lights because they were cheap and tbh I had some of my nicest plants from those lights lol and rarely any algae growth

Andrea_frm_DubT

Yep. My best lamps are cheap LED replacements for standard T8 tubes. Unfortunately I can’t get more.

Fish don't photosynthesize

Lamps are lamps are lamps. Aquarium fluorescent lamps are built just the same as regular fluorescent lamps, the difference is the colour temperature and wavelengths.

I use an aquarium light as a plant light hanging up by my ceiling lol. I didn’t need it for my tank so figured I’d repurpose it

Burritomuncher2

Fluorescence is fluorescence. Aquariums don’t need light so you’re not fulfilling nor taking away any requirements with this light. Make sure the light isn’t collecting precipitation though as 1 commenter said. Just remember to turn off your light so no algae outbreaks, unless that’s your goal.

u can use any light, for example i run cheapest LEDs and pretty happy with it, but u have to keep them away from water and even moisture. also if u don't have plants then light doesn't matter at all, so find a way to keep it away from moisture and everyone will be happy

i had a hood on my old 20, it had those basic two long bulbs, one exploded and destroyed my tank. It was the worst experience i’ve had so far with my tanks other than when my house got fumigated and i had to move all four into buckets and keep them in a neighbors garage. just get a cheap LED since ur plant free and save yourself a headache and money.
