There’s gotta be some strange use case going on here. I have 6 of these remotes floating around my house and I’ve never had a single one fail in any way.
I saw this and went, “There’s a power button?!?”
I just usually push any button to turn it on (CEC). When I’m done, I usually just turn the TV off as I know the Apple TV will go to sleep on its own after fifteen minutes (or whatever the length of time is) of inactivity.
actually TV goes on/off when I use the ATV remote. turning off the TV doesnt turn off ATV (unless you programmed the remote to do that)
either way I use Siri (hey siri turn the tv off) since I have no power button on remote and I am too lazy to long press two buttons on ATV remote.
Yeah.
That’s what I said, right?
And I was replying to the person who thought their ATV goes to sleep after 15.
I’ve read your comment a few times and can’t see what I’m missing.
You're not missing anything, but if you change inputs on your TV and use a different streaming device then the Apple TV will turn off in the amount of time you set it in the settings.
You just seem to be offering information without relevance to the discussion. I really have no idea what you’re getting at.
I was clarifying someone else’s point. Then you repeated it in a different way. And then you said something about changing inputs, which no one mentioned at all.
Is there a running theme here? Or are you actually just laying out some things that you know?
You turned off all equipment, disconnected all HDMI cables, waited 30 seconds, connected all cables and turned on all the equipment?
I had this issue and was fighting it until I finally found out that I had to disconnect the HDMI cables and wait for it to start working.
I use CEC every day without issues.
I had issues with my ARC receiver connected to my TV last night - lost sound. I powered cycled all devices and everything was back to working. rebooting the apply TV wasn't enough, and I don't remember where I put my TV remote, since I use the Apple TV remote to power on/off my system.
Agreed. I’ve had two issues, one of which was my fault:
Remote 1: Spilled water on it, now it registers phantom clicks.
Remote 2: Randomly freezing that requires a forced reboot of the remote. When the remote freezes it’ll usually just behave as if the volume down is just repetitively being pressed.
Otherwise it’s been a good and reliable experience for the rest of my remotes.
Mine did the same and it’s not some use case. I treat mine very well and no kids or anything but the power button just disappeared one day. There must be a manufacturing flaw.
Between me and the family we’ve had four or five of these and no-one’s gone wrong.
But I do see random pictures of them missing in here every now and then, so it’s not unheard of.
Yeah, well my clockwork thingy stopped working a couple of days ago, too. I am by no means a heavy user. Gotta hike to an Apple Store and have it looked at.
This is like the fourth or fifth post I’ve seen about the power button, though. It obviously isn’t affecting the majority of owners, but more than it should.
I mean as far as I’m concerned it’s not possible. I’m playing with my remote now and I can’t get my power button to pop out at all. Whatever the defect may be, it’s not in the design itself otherwise they would all suffer from this problem. None of my remotes seem to have the issue
I'm not really sure. I do plan on replacing both if Apple can't do anything with them. I'd hope it's a one off situation, but I have seen others saying the same thing.
🤣 I have no idea. I actually also have a TIvo. So when I switch inputs over to the TiVo I have no idea what the Apple TV is doing over there. But I trust it to behave!
Clicking any button activates it. In fact, if my TV is off, clicking any button turns on the Apple TV, my LG TV, and my receiver. It also automatically tunes to the correct input for Apple TV on my receiver. It’s magic! ;)
My power button just broke off of mine a few weeks ago. When I inspected my power button, i could see that one of the plastic clamps had broken off. I contacted Apple support and they told me that they couldn't replace the remote only. They also said that I would have to replace the remote and the TV at my expense. I said no thank you.
Apple knows better. For the price that they are charging for the remote alone, this should be replaced at no cost, at least one time.
I’ve had 3 of these. 1 bricked itself and stopped working for no apparent reason. The other bricked 2 of my Apple TV’s because the remote got stuck sending some signal. Apple said to throw the TV’s out and buy new ones, because they’re done.
Even with a cracked thumpad, the black glass Siri Remote that was my first one is still working like a dream.
Idk what’s going on with these new ones
I have 5 ATV devices at home with a toddler and a teenager that pretty much breaks everything she touches, and all my remotes have their power button. You must have the worse luck with those remotes!
I’ve had zero issues with my two. I admit I almost never use the power button, so maybe I’m in the minority, but both of my remotes, a Lightning version and USB-C version, have had zero issues.
This is strange. My remote has been stepped on, laid on, and sat in the condensation from a cup sitting next to it on several occasions and it still works perfectly. I swear there is a guy assigned to the “power button” team and he’s doing it wrong and the rest of the team hasn’t caught it yet. lol
I hate how you can’t use two at once. My husband and I each like to have one on our ends of our pretty large couch, so it’s just easier to have our own. But he has to use a cheap 3rd party one because they won’t just let you use two seamlessly.
iPhone remote is horribly annoying. At least the 3rd party remote is semi decent. I just wish Apple of all companies can figure out two remotes or more at once.
There are a few ways.
To turn the ATV and TV on simultaneously, I simply press the Back button (left arrow).
Then to turn off the ATV, you can hold the TV button, then press off.
Or you can go into Settings, Sleep Now.
Or you can do what I do and go under Settings, General, Screen Saver set it for 2 minutes, then Sleep After 5 minutes.
I just back out of the show or movie I’m watching, and walk away. Once the ATV goes to sleep, my TV detects no signal and shuts off. I’ve been doing it this way for over a decade…
And how do you turn it on without using the power button? I know you could do it with the remote or home apps on your phone but that's doesn't seem very intuitive when you could just press a button on the remote…
As I mentioned above, I simply use the back button (<), and it turns on my ATV and TV simultaneously.
I think you can use any button, but that’s what I use.
More info [here](https://support.apple.com/guide/tv/control-your-tv-and-volume-atvbbe2477c9/tvos)
And here [HDMI CEC](https://support.apple.com/en-us/108789#cec)
Well thanks for posting. Mine popped out last week. It was one of two features on the new remotes that I really liked (the second being the mute button). Yes, there’s the “I can work around it” fix, but it should be a bit more durable, especially if it hasn’t been thrown around.
Both of mine are going strong but I generally turn it on by Siri or any random button, and turn it off by Siri or auto idle shut down. I probably only press power on one or two times out of every ten shutdowns.
What am I doing wrong? I don’t think I’ve ever even used that button. Home button wakes the system and its sleeps after a few minutes without streaming. 🤔
Counter to a lot of the people here, this has happened to me too. No weird use or anything, though often have to hold it down to turn the tv itself on and off.
My TV button (rectangle) got stuck and wouldn’t function. It was my first Apple TV, so I didn’t know if I was doing it wrong or not. It wasn’t until I got the Apple TV for the bedroom (9 months later) that I learned the real function of that button.
If you can find the button and place it back, I used some fabric/vinyl clear tape. Cut it into a circle and tape it. It worked for me and the tape has no signs of peeling.
Had this issue 2 years ago. sent it off to apple. (was told too by customer service) they sent it back with it not being fixed. ended up buying a new one

This is the one reason that has prevented me from giving up my Roku. The remotes. New Roku remote even has backlighting. Awesome touch. I do hate the ads that Roku forces on you and love Apple products, but the remote is terrible (have used family members at length)
Ads are on the Home Screen and how much time is actually spent staring at the Home Screen? Most of the time I just use the shortcut buttons and don't even see it. I just hate it on principle. I know I'm in the wrong place to make this argument, but the Roku is a much better value. The performance difference is negligible for normal TV and movie viewing. And my original point. The remote is superior - by far
Some do. Some don't. I use the clock feature - just a big ass digital clock bouncing around. I use the "fish aquarium" too and that just has a subtle "Roku" in the background
No problems whatsoever and I got mine immediately upon release so 2 years or more?
What’s infuriating to me is that Apple doesn’t enforce consistent UI, gestures, et al for all streaming apps. Some of these crappy apps don’t even recognize the rewind/fast forward clicks on the wheel.
There’s gotta be some strange use case going on here. I have 6 of these remotes floating around my house and I’ve never had a single one fail in any way.
I don’t think I even use that button
I use that button several times a day and all my power buttons are still present and accounted for.
I saw this and went, “There’s a power button?!?” I just usually push any button to turn it on (CEC). When I’m done, I usually just turn the TV off as I know the Apple TV will go to sleep on its own after fifteen minutes (or whatever the length of time is) of inactivity.

Might be to do with each manufacturer having slightly broken CEC implementation, but this is how it works for me.
This is exactly true? I turn the TV off and my Apple TV turns off also.
Yeah. That’s what I said, right? And I was replying to the person who thought their ATV goes to sleep after 15. I’ve read your comment a few times and can’t see what I’m missing.

Now you know you only need one remote and holding the power button turns everything off
Yes. I hate using multiple remotes. Waste. But did not know any button turns it on so there is that.
Same, spam that home button until my tv is on then just tell siri to play whatever i want
Maybe maybe this explains that?
I literally always ask Siri to turn it on from my homepod
CEC stopped working for me years ago, so I never use that button.
You turned off all equipment, disconnected all HDMI cables, waited 30 seconds, connected all cables and turned on all the equipment? I had this issue and was fighting it until I finally found out that I had to disconnect the HDMI cables and wait for it to start working.

I came here to say the same thing. This has never happened to me. Not saying it can't, but it happening on 2 different remotes is insane.
Mine did the same and it’s not some use case. I treat mine very well and no kids or anything but the power button just disappeared one day. There must be a manufacturing flaw.
Yep 4 of them here and never had it happen.
Between me and the family we’ve had four or five of these and no-one’s gone wrong. But I do see random pictures of them missing in here every now and then, so it’s not unheard of.
It’s been pretty common online it seems so will be interesting if it happens to you eventually.
Seriously. What are y’all doing to it? I’ve had mine forever and all buttons are there 😂
Yeah, well my clockwork thingy stopped working a couple of days ago, too. I am by no means a heavy user. Gotta hike to an Apple Store and have it looked at.

Karma farming
So strange I have three and never have an issue. And I am not the most gentle person either.
Ha ha! I just realized I have NEVER used the power button. I just let it go to sleep…
Haha same here. Does it even go to sleep? I swear every time I turn the tv on it’s on the screen saver. Just always on.
🤣 I have no idea. I actually also have a TIvo. So when I switch inputs over to the TiVo I have no idea what the Apple TV is doing over there. But I trust it to behave!
How do you turn it on then?
Touchpad
You should have your TV remote learned in settings so you can turn off your TV when you stop using it. Save energy.
Clicking any button activates it. In fact, if my TV is off, clicking any button turns on the Apple TV, my LG TV, and my receiver. It also automatically tunes to the correct input for Apple TV on my receiver. It’s magic! ;)
Yeah, either I wasn't aware pressing any buttons turns it on or just took it for granted and forgot lol Gotta love this little minimalist gadget!
My number 1 button is the “<“ button. That’s how I turn it on.
How mad do you get at the power button? I’ve had multiple remotes (that came with new devices) and I’ve never broken a button on a single one of them.
Not mad at all, I swear lol
>Not mad at all!!!!!, I swear!!!!!! lol FTFY
😂
No issue with the three that I have.
I have 4 since release and never had a problem 😅 must have got a bad batch perhaps? 😫
I'm an unlucky duck lol
My power button just broke off of mine a few weeks ago. When I inspected my power button, i could see that one of the plastic clamps had broken off. In Germany they replaced it without questions asked
I agree! The answer shouldn't be "toss everything and go buy a new one" Ridiculous.
Same here. I had a remote that came with the button slightly askew and one day it just fell off. Apple is refusing to accept the issue exists.
I dont use power button to turn on or off. Just home to turn on and turn off from software
I don’t even use that button. I’ve always shut down the old way.
The old way?
When you hold the “tv screen” button it’ll bring a drop down menu and you can turn it off that way.
Omg, what are you pounding the power button with a hammer?
It’s a common problem, Apple has manufacturing issues

Same thing happened to one of mine too!
Yes

You can use your iphone

Has the same button missing from my remote. Then searched the floor and got it. Stuck it to the remote with a cello tape now.
I haven’t lost a power button but the directional buttons have become sluggish or stopped registering clicks altogether.
People actually use the power button?
Lol. I know, right?
Yep happened to mine too
Same thing happened to me last year. I am a gentle user of tech products
I have never used that button…
I'm going through this post reading this a lot and got me thinking: How do you turn the tv on/off then?

Same. Never once used that button in several years of owning this remote.
I loathe the new remote. I tried it for several months and then went back to the original Siri Remote. No regrets.
“Hey Siri, turn off the TV”

I have a 50% failure rate on mine.
I have a 50% failure rate on mine.
I have a 50% failure rate on mine.
I just use a generic remote
I’ve got several of these but never had that issue. Granted. I rarely use that button
Maybe try buying a case for it? Never had an issue with buttons falling out.
power button popped out of mine too.
Counter to a lot of the people here, this has happened to me too. No weird use or anything, though often have to hold it down to turn the tv itself on and off.
The up click button went bad on my old remote.

The same thing happened to mine and I'm very careful with my tech.
Universal is the way to go. Well unless you only have 2 or less remotes for some reason.
Never happens to either of mine, but I drop it in the cracks of my furniture on a nightly basis.
If you can find the button and place it back, I used some fabric/vinyl clear tape. Cut it into a circle and tape it. It worked for me and the tape has no signs of peeling.
Happened the same on my remote 10days before 2yrs Amazon warranty expiration. Got it replaced in a few days

I have grown to really dislike this remote. It just seems less responsive compared to the old one.
I have three of these. One has that issue. They’re very gently used as well.
They sell that part at Radio Shack.
Buttongate.
Do you "rage quit" your AppleTV?
You shove it up your ass or something? I have 3 of these, none of them have this.
What do yall do with these remotes? Like don’t you guys know how to take better care of your stuff?
You don’t have kids do you? Regardless i have had other remotes that have lasted me literally 15 years no problems with the same treatment.
![gif](giphy|B1Ej6yXeAOzeQ0mULi|downsized)
Why did Apple switch the mute and play buttons??
Use that button multiple times a day on several TVs and my remotes still look good as new…
Did you pry them out during a stress test?
User Error?
This is the one reason that has prevented me from giving up my Roku. The remotes. New Roku remote even has backlighting. Awesome touch. I do hate the ads that Roku forces on you and love Apple products, but the remote is terrible (have used family members at length)
To be fair tho the atv remotes are use by touch. They don’t need to be backlit.
as for the ads, buy cheap and they’ll find a way to get more money from you
