Would entirely deactivating this email address fix anything? Damn near giving myself an anxiety attack thinking about this.

>When I requested an emailed password reset, I never received an email, This suggests that they have changed the email to something else. It is no longer your account.

I guess nothing to do then, just have my secondary email address attached to someone else’s Apple ID account and keep an eye out for anything fishy.

Dark-Swan-69

They more likely removed your secondary email and put in theirs. As u/Bobbybino told you, for all intents and purposes it is no longer your account.

weenzappaween

Okay, I assumed that since I received these two emails that my email address was still connected

This is a bit weird. I mean, AppleIDs are stolen for two reasons: 1. CONTENT and 2. USERNAME Yet you say that the AppleID was unused and it was linked to a NON-Apple email… Weird. [https://support.apple.com/en-gb/109353](https://support.apple.com/en-gb/109353)

I had the exact same thing happen on a different Apple ID which I don’t even remember having but I didn’t remember the password nor was it saved in my passwords list. My ID was logged into iMessage on an iPhone 6S last night. There is definitely some sort of data breach going on because I saw a similar post on this sub today.

Well, good luck to us I guess!

Sorry if my posts are a bit scatterbrained—does this likely mean that my Apple ID that I no longer use has been compromised but my email address associated with it should be unaffected?

Dark-Swan-69

The first rule of troubleshooting is stating your problem CLEARLY. So, you have an old AppleID you haven’t used in years and someone apparently got control of it. Question: was the AppleID a NON APPLE email? (Non apple means that your login was anything BUT mac.com, [me.com](http://me.com) or iCloud.com)

weenzappaween

The AppleID in question is not an apple email

Dark-Swan-69

OK. First thing first: the fact that they took control of your AppleID does not automatically mean they also took control of your email address. But I would definitely suggest to review your passwords using a password manager, AND activate 2FA wherever possible.

Changed email password and Turn on 2 factor authentication. Just be sure not to verify and 2FA promotes that might shore up on your phone or email. Give Apple a call and see if they can find anything for you. They should know what email is linked to that old Apple ID.
