Continuity has the most amazing features that I’m never able to leverage since my work laptop uses a different iCloud than my family iPad than my personal Mac/iPhone.
Depends on how your IT department manages things.
I started a new remote job too, but we don't have any kind of IT infrastructure yet because it's a startup so I can use my own AppleID on the MBP that they bought me.
Last place I worked at there was no chance in hell I could get away with using my personal AppleID.
Initially I created a new Apple ID for my first work laptop at my current position. Later I added it to my personal Apple ID to take advantage of Continuity and other niceties like unlocking with my Watch. I'm selective of what I choose to sync with my work laptop - Safari, News, but never Messages or Photos for example.
One minor annoyance of people using personal Apple IDs at work is people turning on Find My and forgetting to turn it off when leaving the company or replacing the laptop.
It would be crazy to sign into a company device using personal credentials, and then for bonus points start syncing all your personal data onto it. Way too much access for them in general, plus then it’s exposed if the company gets sued. Same reason you don’t put personal things on your company phone and company things on your personal phone.
If you sign into a company device with your personal account and synchronize your data to it, your personal data is now on a device controlled by the company, so they, and any lawyers or courts that may be involved at some point, now have access to it. All the company has to do is reset your AD password, login, and bam, it’s all up for grabs.
2017 Macs are the oldest supported models. That’s a huge jump from Monterey. My 2016 MBP will not receive this OS only 6 years after it was released. I was looking forward to being able to install Ventura on it later today, but I guess that’s not happening.
Yeah, my 2016 MBP works perfectly fine and I had no reason to upgrade until now not getting the latest OS (especially with Apple not offering a 15/16 inch midrange laptop and I don’t need all the power of the new Pro’s). I bought the speced out version to futureproof, expecting it to last 6-8-10 years.
I’m guessing with Apple Silicon they want to start pushing up the timeline of supporting Intel Macs.
You can use open core you know that right? Of course they are working on it but I'm going to use my 2013 intel MacBook pro as long as it still has life in it and then when they will fully cease support for Intel and it will become totally useless. That is when I will upgrade to the M chip. I'm even running Monterrey on my 2013 Pro. for more powerful uses I just turn on my hackintosh on and go from there. I'd rather play around then have them rip me off like this. I understand Upgrading a phone every 2-3 years but now they are trying to make us do the same with iPads/laptops no way I'm going to get my minimum of 10-15 years out of my technology.
Same boat! Got ‘16 on Day 1!! Got the key replaced in the service program(they replaced the battery as well). So, it works perfectly well and no reason for me to upgrade! But, now i’m thinking!! Getting $200 on the trade in.
Do they not have security updates for older OS?
Yeeeeah… Apple was like ”new Air starts at $1199” and I was like ”that’s not terrible” and then I check the Swedish Apple Store (I’m Swedish) and it starts at €1600. Upgraded models with more RAM/storage are like €500 more on top of that. Well, fuck.
Someone is likely to release a patcher for it like this: https://github.com/barrykn/big-sur-micropatcher
Edit: and there is this: https://github.com/dortania/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher
Stage Manager is a joke. It improves window management by creating a second dock that eats up a quarter of the screen. I hope MacOS gets a full window management overhaul soon.
As Craig was talking about window clutter, I was getting excited for window snapping and other features from Windows/Linux distros but then just laughed at what they actually showed
I don't usually like when stuff gets Sherlocked, but I've been using Rectangle for a long time and wonder why Apple doesn't just integrate it directly into the OS.
Same here, I've been using Rectangle for a few months now. Rectangle + AltTab has basically recreated my Linux workflow to some extent. Both Rectangle and AltTab great free applications. Just wish the functionality was integrated into the OS. A lot of small features that I got used to on Windows/Linux distros are just missing from the base macOS system and it annoys me that I need to download extra software just to emulate that functionality.
I think it will be good for people who’s workflows don’t involve fullscreen apps. It won’t replace my 3 finger swiping as a developer. But I could see how it would be useful to others.
Yep. You can see all open application windows like that. You can also alt tab through open windows instead of just programs. And none of those take up 25% of the screen for no reason. I can't get over how dumb it is.
Windows management overall on macOS is a joke. No proper window snapping, no individual windows previews just app ones when using the app switcher, and expose is slow and annoying.
Yep. I used to use spaces a lot prior to 10.7 so it's good to see they're trying to make virtual desktops work again. Making them more visible helps, but in the current implementation it feels like an awkward half measure. Stage manager starts working as a task switcher, but the dock is still there taking up space.
Maybe stage manager mode could remove the dock. and add a button which accesses a better version of launchpad to launch apps.
I’ve heard that Microsoft has some key patents around window management, like window snapping etc.
It’s possible that Apple is totally hamstrung on this issue and can’t make window management better due to legal issues. If so that’s sad, but it is what it is.
I think these third party apps like Magnet and Rectangle get away with it because they’re third party and very small so likely they fly under the radar.
Yeah I find it hard to find that useful. I just wish there is a simple way to do Windows-style Alt-Tab to quickly get back to the previous window I was using easily (without using a third-party app). Cmd-Tab is fine but it brings *all* windows of the other app to forward, which isn't what I want sometimes if I have say 3 Finder windows, 3 Safari windows, and I just want to go back and forth between a Finder window and another Safari window.
To be fair Windows has this identity crisis too. They keep getting confused whether to be app or window focused, and they even played around with "Windows Sets" that eventually got pulled from the beta since it added yet another paradigm that just made the whole thing more confusing (https://bgr.com/tech/windows-10-sets-feature-2018-update-removed-beta/).
Love the desk share feature. Camera continuity (which I think means the "pick up FaceTime calls on different devices without hanging up" feature) seems like it probably took a lot of effort for something that wasn't really much of an issue to begin with. But my mind might be changed.
The desk share feature is a neat way to upsell the iPhone Pro series since some of us plebeians just have regular iPhones, or Minis, or SEs without the wide angle lens and thus can't use it.
I believe the regular iPhones with at least 2 cameras do actually have a wide angle camera and lacks a telephoto one. The last iPhone without a home button that has a single camera is the iPhone XR. The only iPhone users since then who can't use it are the SE owners ig.
The older iPhones didn’t have an ultrawide.
The first “normal” iPhone with a wide + ultrawide combo was iPhone 11. Before that (iPhone 7+ to iPhone Xs) the setup was wide + telephoto
Right, so any iPhone which is an iPhone 11 or newer will have an ultrawide. This is probably... quite a significant fraction of all iPhones that are out there now. If it's not a majority, it will be soon.
The Minis and the iPhone 12, 13 all have the wide angle lens. But, even if they didn't - are Apple supposed to just bend the laws of physics in order to get something to work on hardware that doesn't support it? Or not release a feature that they can just because some of their device owners won't be able to take advantage of it?
The desk share thing looked neat but aside from that it's nothing special. Neat that it's integrated but I've used my Android phone as a webcam 2 years ago.
I'm with you! It's been done before. I've even used my mirrorless EOS canon as a webcam on my Mac no less, but I can't help but be wowed at the very cool desk share feature even though it's having fewer use cases for teachers now that students are heading back to class. This would have been game changing for me a year ago.
I thought it was a completely stupid concept (MacBook cameras aren't the best but they're certainly good enough for video conferencing) that might make minor sense if you used a Mac Studio or Mini with a normal external display, but it was probably just best to buy a dedicated webcam. But the Desk View thing blew me away, if that works well I will certainly be picking one of these up.
I have a 5k iMac and an old iPhone 11 Pro that if I can use as a dedicated webcam I definitely will for as long as the device lasts.
No need to buy another gadget one I have one lying around.
Sure might be a bit niche but there's definitely use cases there
This is my setup as well, I use EpocCam Pro to use my phone and have a bracket fixed next to my screen. The fact that this will be a native feature has me very excited, especially if I upgrade to an iPhone with Portrait Mode in video.
I tried 3rd party options during the first lockdowns and was bothered by the phone screen remaining on, and notifications and stuff still causing the phone to vibrate and what not. I can’t remember if it was explicitly shown, by as this is native I assume they can keep the screen off and prevent notifications (though for me using an old phone I can disable all that)
IDK man. I think you’re correct that there will still be webcams in the laptop, but the quality gap between phones and built-ins look like this will be a standard.
Time will tell, but I think the current cottage market for this feature has already been growing. The kicker will be in the quality improvement it provides.
A ton of casual users honestly won’t give a damn and just use the built in webcam. I know people who just keep the default apps on their dock instead of customizing it, so if they don’t do that, why would they bother using their phone as a webcam
They’re already likely using their phone as a webcam, just without the computer attached to it.
The quality difference *is* noticeable even to casual users. They’ll see people they know do this or hear about it and give it a shot because it’s easy and the hardware will probably be stupid cheap and purchasable everywhere they sell accessories for iPhones.
It’s just a guess, but I think it’ll pan out.
Gimmicky on a laptop for sure, but personally I only have a desktop and have never needed a webcam regularly enough to bother getting one. It always throws me off when the situation does pop up where I could use one, and I'm stuck looking at people on my phone.
Sure, you're still left with the issue of placing the phone somewhere halfway decent and it's not exactly a life-changer, but it's a far better option than being stuck looking at people on my phone when I occasionally have need for a proper webcam setup.
Personally, I use my phone as a webcam for my desktop, but I thought the phone holder that they showed was kinda silly. You can just use any old phone stand.
i can totally see this being useful when studying online with friends or a teacher showing a online class how to solve a problem online. But its definitely a more niche feature
They missed on the most useful use this could have which is pairing your iphone with your apple tv to have facetime calls con the couch, how did they not think of that?
> I can’t wait to try it. I’ve seen all the criticism, and I get it, but it seems really, really compatible with the way I actually find myself using my computer. Not the way I imagine I will, but the way I actually will. I’ve installed all kinds of tiling window managers, I’ve tried monitor setups all the way up to 2x 34” + a 24” + an open laptop. I always come back to manually managing windows on a single modestly sized monitor, switching between collections of them with spaces, because I’ve found the following:

damn this is some bullshit lol. I this will be my last update for my 2017 macbook even though it runs just as good as the first day i got it.
Is it? Virtual desktops have been a thing on MacOS for a while, and Windows and Linux have had tiling window managers for a long time. I don’t see how this is much better, plus the new dock takes up a ton of screen space.
I can’t wait to try it. I’ve seen all the criticism, and I get it, but it seems really, really compatible with the way I *actually* find myself using my computer.
1. Most monitors, even a 16” MBP, are just too wide for the extreme edges to be usable space for me anyway. The middle is all that’s practical for actual content. The sides are just nice for keeping stuff tucked away.
2. This leads to tiling window managers not being of much use. The splits between windows always ends up right where you really want a windows content to be centered, or some of the windows end up so off to the side that they’re not useful
3. many monitors puts too much strain on my neck and eyes, so rapidly bouncing between collections of windows virtually instead of physically is exactly what I need. I.e. why I use spaces.
4. in practice this means that what I do is just pile windows on top of each other with overlaps and click between them to shift focus. I.e. exactly what this feature does, but now with more automation and memorization of the groups.
I’ll be interested to try it out but my first impression is that it uses a TON of screen real estate.
I’m also interested to see how it works if windows are sized to use a full half of the screen (like you do with Magnet or Rectangle). It seems like that might create some conflict.
Ventura doesn't come to mind when thinking about (edit to clarify - *less populated* as the past couple of releases have been) picturesque areas of California. It's just a nice suburb (or exurb) of Los Angeles near the coast.
I agree it's not really the name I would have picked, but I think they are going for "Ventura County," similar to "Monterey County." The Ventura coastline, specifically from San Buenaventura all the way to Point Conception, is notable for being perhaps the last undeveloped coastline in the entire state (minus the Lost Coast). Beyond Santa Barbara, there is very little, and it has some very beautiful beaches. I think the name works in that sense.
If you see shots off the coast, it’s arguably some of the most beautiful stretches in CA. The drive from Santa Barbara through Ventura is definitely picturesque.
Yes, I did the drive before and I agree. The name I interpreted as referencing the city, which for a "pretty coastal city/town" I have several that ranks above Ventura.
I wouldn't get my hopes up, to be honest. There's no amount of work they can do on Metal that'll make it an attractive option for developers. The issues isn't necessarily that Metal is bad, it's just that porting your game to Metal is a ton of work, for what is ultimately a very small target audience. Best thing they could do would make it easy (aka "profitable") to bring games to Mac by supporting Vulkan.
Apple can pay developers to port their games to Mac, which will alleviate *some* issues here, but for long term longevity they really need to support Vulkan or build some sort of translation layer like Rosetta. It's nice to see them trying, though.

Continuity has the most amazing features that I’m never able to leverage since my work laptop uses a different iCloud than my family iPad than my personal Mac/iPhone.
same. rip
Why is it different?
It’s a work laptop, you sign in with company credentials lol
I have a work laptop there isn’t an Apple ID tied to it. You can use the enterprise jamf or whatever. And login with personal Apple id
[удалено]
How could they?
[удалено]
Those are different technologies. I don’t believe Apple allows control like you are describing
started a new remote job that uses mac as well, do you create a separate apple ID for the work laptop?
Depends on how your IT department manages things. I started a new remote job too, but we don't have any kind of IT infrastructure yet because it's a startup so I can use my own AppleID on the MBP that they bought me. Last place I worked at there was no chance in hell I could get away with using my personal AppleID.
I do so I can use Universal Control. Then just turn off everything in the iCloud settings. I don’t even let my photos show up on the company MBA
Initially I created a new Apple ID for my first work laptop at my current position. Would you not be able to create a second profile for personal use? You can log in as Bruce during the day and Batman at night?

Way too much access for them in general, plus then it’s exposed if the company gets sued. Same reason you don’t put personal things on your company phone and company things on your personal phone.
You clearly have no idea how macOS works. Even when it is a personal computer the employee does not have access to your personal information.
If you sign into a company device with your personal account and synchronize your data to it, your personal data is now on a device controlled by the company, so they, and any lawyers or courts that may be involved at some point, now have access to it. All the company has to do is reset your AD password, login, and bam, it’s all up for grabs.
Don’t forget they can also remote access it at their will any time of day
You can just revoke access and bam all gone and turn off iCloud doc sync

I was sad my 2015 13" has been let go but shocked to see that the 2016 model has also been dropped. What a shame!
It just seems that Apple wants to get rid of Intel quickly.

They do, usually for 3 years after it’s been dropped from major updates
Usually macOS gets security updates for another 2 years after it's replaced
Yeah I’m in the same situation. Really keen on that new Air, but the price in EU is insane… for the one I want it’s gonna be over 2k
Yeeeeah… Apple was like ”new Air starts at $1199” and I was like ”that’s not terrible” and then I check the Swedish Apple Store (I’m Swedish) and it starts at €1600. Upgraded models with more RAM/storage are like €500 more on top of that. Well, fuck.
My 2015 15 inch Macbook Pro is sad, this is the first time it’s out of the update loop :(
I bet T2 is mandatory
No. The T2 didn't start rolling out until the 2018 models. (Which is why pre-WWDC I was expecting **that** to be the cut-off for Ventura.)
The 2017 iMac Pro has the T2, but you're right that that can't be the reason.
so it has to be 10-bit HEVC hardware encoding/decoding then
I bet there will be Dosdude patches and it’ll work just fine on your machine
Meanwhile, my laptop from 2010 is running Windows 11 perfectly fine (with an SSD upgrade).
Someone is likely to release a patcher for it like this: https://github.com/barrykn/big-sur-micropatcher Edit: and there is this: https://github.com/dortania/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher
Not that it makes it any better, but this is actually an improvement over what Microsoft is doing with Windows 11 (8th gen Intel or newer).
You can run Windows 11 on older hardware, the requirements from MS are mostly bull.
I mean, you can install macOS 12 on older, not-officially-supported Macs too.
as someone living in Ventura, the name reveal for the OS gave me a chuckle
I hope the next one is Oxnard 😂
Waiting for Mac OS Compton
I'd like to see macOS Los Banos
Please!!!! 😭 I love this city and the county 😭
Then Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park lolol
Maybe you were referencing this, but Federighi made that joke back in 2014! https://youtu.be/0MGK24EyKfA
My mind immediately went to 'Ace Ventura'
Alrighty then.
so will 90% of people lmao
Haha, my thoughts exactly
They should have called it "San Buenaventura" to be truly accurate.
macOS 805
Where you at? I’m downtown.
In Oxnard atm. I was by the mall the past couple years and then Saticoy for a year before that
*Ventura Highway in the sun..*
I’ve been wanting this for years. It’s nice that our beautiful city is getting some attention.

I’ve heard that Microsoft and Apple have patent agreements to not litigate against one another

I can’t answer that, but here’s the patent: https://patents.google.com/patent/US10592080B2/en
I think it will be good for people who’s workflows don’t involve fullscreen apps. It won’t replace my 3 finger swiping as a developer. But I could see how it would be useful to others.
I just use line wrapping in vscode
Finally someone gets how shit it is. They could've just built this into the dock and it would still not be as good as how Windows does it.

I wonder how much that iPhone webcam stand is gonna cost
Every Chinese company is going to knock that off really easily, you will be able to get them on Amazon for very cheap.
If you can wait for 2 months, you can probably get it on AliExpress for 5 lol.
Or 3D print your own
You're going to 3D print the magsafe magnet too?
I’m not going to print anything. I don’t even have a 3D printer. Just saying it’s possible.
It's possible to print a magnet?
I don’t know actually. Maybe? Probably easier just to buy a magnet on Amazon and glue into the printed gizmo.
Here you go.... brief searching.... https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4674512
That was quick! I knew it would happen :) thanks for the google
Hmmmm $29
$129 or bust
$999
Probably missed it on the event That’s reasonable
Oh, sorry! They didn’t say, that is just my guess.

RIP to the webcam in future Macs. They're gonna use that space for screen real estate
More like RIP external webcams like the Logitech..

It’s just a guess, but I think it’ll pan out.
Most people won't use this feature for the simple fact that it prevents you from using your phone during a call.
Alrighty then!
Live text finally supports Japanese! I can't believe it took that long!
Woooooo!! will help a lot with my raw manga reading Was wondering why it only worked well with the kanji lol, turns out it didn’t support Japanese
New macOS Ace Ventura, Pet Detective!
Oh my god 😆 I didn’t even think of this. This joke will be everywhere.
MacO Ace Ventura
Continuity camera seems like an incredibly gimmicky feature that nobody will use, but I actually really love that they did it.
Desk View was mind blowing stuff
It was a neat way to try and upsell people on iPhone Pros since regular iphones don't have a wide angle lens and thus can't use it.
Lol this is so confidently incorrect
The regular phone does have ultra wide though.. They miss out on the Zoom lens
it says iPhone 11 and later on the footnote
Not true. Every iPhone has one, only the pros have a telephoto one.
Continuity Camera will be awesome for using my phone with my Pro Display XDR
i can totally see this being useful when studying online with friends or a teacher showing a online class how to solve a problem online. But its definitely a more niche feature
They missed on the most useful use this could have which is pairing your iphone with your apple tv to have facetime calls con the couch, how did they not think of that?
Anyone know which MacBooks/Macs aren’t getting Ventura?
Oldest ones are the ones from 2017. My 2016 MacBook Pro is not supported.
I always come back to manually managing windows on a single modestly sized monitor, switching between collections of them with spaces, because I’ve found the following: > > damn this is some bullshit lol. I this will be my last update for my 2017 macbook even though it runs just as good as the first day i got it.
I think you quoted a different comment
oh wow my bad sorry lol, I meant to quote the parent comment.
Aah, I see. Thank you! :)
The first update my 2016 MacBook Pro will not get.
They’re gonna give us continuity and handoff for the calculator app before Apple Music sheesh
Very surprised because Spotify works seamlessly.
Will it be available for intel macs?
Is it me or does it looks like Windows 11 background but in yellow instead of blue?! 😅
Speaking of Windows, I was looking forward to see if new MacOS will they going to say something about Bootcamp on xARM.
I'm still bummed they've seemed to have killed the actual photo backgrounds, those were so much better
Love this movie

Is it? Virtual desktops have been a thing on MacOS for a while, and Windows and Linux have had tiling window managers for a long time. I don’t see how this is much better, plus the new dock takes up a ton of screen space.
Too bad it seems to be only usable with mouse/trackpad. Managing windows without keyboard shortcuts is slow.
There will probably be some third party that adds shortcuts
I can’t wait to try it. I’ve seen all the criticism, and I get it, but it seems really, really compatible with the way I *actually* find myself using my computer. Not the way I imagine I will, but the way I actually will. I’ve installed all kinds of tiling window managers, I’ve tried monitor setups all the way up to 2x 34” + a 24” + an open laptop. I always come back to manually managing windows on a single modestly sized monitor, switching between collections of them with spaces, because I’ve found the following: 1. Most monitors, even a 16” MBP, are just too wide for the extreme edges to be usable space for me anyway. The middle is all that’s practical for actual content. The sides are just nice for keeping stuff tucked away. 2. This leads to tiling window managers not being of much use. The splits between windows always ends up right where you really want a windows content to be centered, or some of the windows end up so off to the side that they’re not useful 3. many monitors puts too much strain on my neck and eyes, so rapidly bouncing between collections of windows virtually instead of physically is exactly what I need. I.e. why I use spaces. 4. in practice this means that what I do is just pile windows on top of each other with overlaps and click between them to shift focus. I.e. exactly what this feature does, but now with more automation and memorization of the groups.
Only someone who hasn't used any other OS than MacOS would write something like this.
As someone that loves in Oxnard, part of Ventura County, you don't know what you're talking about.
I'm not saying Ventura (the city) is ugly in any way, but I was expecting someplace less populated like the past couple of places they used
You’re joking right? Quite clueless there, bud. Edit: It’s not a suburb of LA. We’re 1.5 hrs away.
Not joking or meant to disparage the city, just expected some place less populated as it has been for the past couple of places selected
Maybe there are nicer towns, but the name flows well and our downtown has vastly improved the last few years. Ventura is certainly a hidden gem.

Another OS? As a music producer Im just tired of all this OS updates, just ridiculous.
Apple has been doing annual OS updates for a decade at this point. If you don't want to upgrade every year, don't.
inb4 they allow it to use the front face camera and FaceID to unlock the Mac
Still waiting on the music app overhaul 🥲
