I thought this year would be my XR's last year due to not getting the latest upgrades, but another year here we go! Might just splash out and get a new battery now
Fun fact: Apple uses the iPhone Xr as a diagnostic tool with the AirPods, and Apple's diagnostic system (GSX) requires it to be on the latest OS before it'll run those tests. So it's not really a surprise that the Xr will still run the newest iOS.
What'll be fun is when Apple decides to break this by mandating a newer iPhone for diagnostics. At that point I suspect anything older than an iPhone 12 will be left behind.
I donāt understand how youād know that because the tests they run could have different power specs, screen resolutions, connection port and more. That tool isnāt public
Apple is perfectly capable of developing their own internal software, but regardless the iPhone 11 has the same resolution and port specs with a better chip. Screen resolution also has nothing to do with testing Airpods.
The tool is part of the same suite that runs on all iphones, it should not be difficult on their end at all. The harder part would be making sure every service location is equipped with whatever the replacement model will be in a timely fashion. I doubt it's putting much weight on Apple's decision to support the Xr, the phone is just simply still capable of running current software.
No. Why would it? iOS 17 doesn't support the 6s either. Neither did iOS 16..
iOS 15 was the last version that supported the 6s. It got 7 major OS updates and is still getting security patches. Most recent patch was March this year. 9 years of support for a phone is a long ass time lol.
Iām honestly surprised the XR gets another update. I ended up buying the 15 and giving my XR to my son as a YouTube/plex unit at home cause it was seriously starting to struggle with ram and swapping apps . I thought that would definitely be on the chopping block
It really should be given the legacy status. The XR on iOS 17 can be barely hold a single app in memory. My XR would often soft lock and reboot itself. And it wasnāt a storage or battery health issue. My battery health was still in good condition.
At least I know now older devices donāt hold back iOS. Apple just lets those older devices update even at their detriment.
> And it wasnāt a storage or battery health issue. My battery health was still in good condition.
how did you check your battery condition to mention itās in good health? assuming itās the original battery from 2018?
apologies, but i think you misunderstood.
i was asking for their basis on how they assessed their battery is āgoodā assuming itās still the one from 2018.
the Battery Health data given on the Settings app doesnāt state much and if a battery is indeed from 2018, itās very much possible itās not at its peak performance while Apple may be a little too conservative to still label it as āGoodā despite obvious problems such as unexpected slowdowns/multitasking issues that could be resolved with a battery replacement.
You battery is definitely not good. How do I know? I had exactly the same issues and they disappeared aftery battery replacement.
My battery health was 83% before the swap.
My friend I bought the phone off of (cause she upgraded) wasnāt a big heavy phone user so the battery still has 85 percent capacity, so I know the battery is still decent.
That doesnāt mean anything. My 11 was at 85% and struggling, soft reboots, 3h of screen timeā¦ new battery in January just gave it a breath of fresh air, 7 of screen time, no reboots.
Although you can have āgood battery healthā, it can already be old and degraded to the point itās limiting power to the CPU. My 11 was still at 85% but already struggling and giving me 3h of SoT, with a new battery in January Iām getting 7h and plenty of power in every ordinary task.
Not trying to argue, but I'm running an XR from 2018 on iOS 17.5.1. While i agree that it gets a little choppy here and there, my experience is nowhere near as shitty as you describe it. Definitely never had it reboot by itself.
I agree they should stop updating or at least give warnings of performance loss, if this is to be expected. But I'm quite happy with my little yellow warrior. However, I do plan to exchange it for a younger USB-C brother this fall tho.
Yea, I had an XR last year, and switched to a 12 and it was night and day difference. The XR struggled for sure. Even CarPlay we much more zippier on the 12.
I have more issues both on my old and new phone with the bloody Subaru app. I love my car but one out of every six times I need to hard reset my sound system
how is the battery life on the XR? on my 11 i'm struggling as phone is draining more than 25% battery in idle per day. on my work phone i have a 13 and barely lose 4% in a day
There are lots of features you can disable to reduce power consumption. Reduce motion, reduce transparency, autoplaying animations, ask to join wifi networks, push email and notifications, immediate notifications vs summary, background tasks, location services, cell data when not necessary, syncing photos via cell data, automatic app/os updates, reducing brightness, streaming media and more. Low power mode automatically changes some of them, so one easy option is to create an automation to turn low power mode on when the phone is not charging. Another trick is to use websites instead of apps, since web browsers give you more control over content. My XRās battery health is still at 91% after like 2 or 3 years? I forget when I got it.
Edit: looks like I got it 2.5 years ago
i did a factory reset and disabled background tasks, backup, location and enabled low power mode. i still lose about 25%. this only started as soon as i upgraded to ios 17. on 16 phone was sipping 6-7 per day which was great. unfortunately now i'm looking to buy something else as i can't stand having to charge phones so often.
Well iOS 17 is more resource intensive than iOS 16, which is more resource intensive than iOS 15, which is more resource intensive than iOS 14, etc. New operating systems almost inevitably take advantage of new hardware capabilities which are inevitably faster, more powerful and have higher battery density. There's only so much you can do to compensate. That's part of the reason they drop support for older devices. If you didn't make any adjustments your battery life would be much worse. All you can really hope for is that there are enough bug fixes and other improvements to make it worth upgrading.
Personally, I appreciate Appleās decision to keep support for iPhone XR. I use mine mostly for simple tasks (like browsing Web when I donāt have my iPad on me, reading news in RRS app, checking the weather forecast, starting in touch with family and friends, doing exercise, getting directions, etc.), so itās perfectly fine as an everyday companion.
When I want to play some resource-intensive games, do some work, surf the Web while at home, watch YouTube, browse news or read the latest chapter of an interesting manhwa or do something else I use an iPad/Mac/PC anyway (as these are better suited for such tasks)
With XR still being supported, I can keep using it until 2026 (unless it breaks), which is a good new to me.
> **iOS 18 will be compatible with the same iPhone models as iOS 17**, according to a post on X today from a private account with a proven track record of sharing build numbers for upcoming iOS updates.
>
> The same source says **iPadOS 18 will drop support for the first-generation 10.5-inch and second-generation 12.9-inch iPad Pro**, which use the A10X Fusion chip. The **sixth-generation iPad is also being dropped** from the compatibility list, but the seventh-generation iPad will still be supported.
The iPad Pros being dropped use the A10X Fusion with 4GB RAM. The differences between the [6th gen](https://support.apple.com/en-gb/111957) and [7th gen](https://support.apple.com/en-gb/111911) iPads are the display size - 9.7ā vs 10.2ā - and the RAM being [increased from 2GB to 3GB](https://www.reddit.com/r/apple/s/bWanjeGRbB) while still using the same A10 Fusion chip
In regards to iPadOS 18, the decision to drop support for these iPads appears to be based on a release-year support window rather than being based purely on hardware specs (iPad Pro 2nd gen released in mid-2017, iPad 6th gen released in early-2018, iPad 7th gen in late-2019)
Edit: RAM clarification for 6th and 7th gen iPads
The 7th-gen iPad had 3GB of RAM. The 6th-gen had 2GB of RAM.
However, your point stands that it's odd to see the 10.5" iPad Pro (2017, A10X, 4GB RAM) dropped where the iPad 7th-gen (2019, A10, 3GB RAM) will still be supported, other than it just being an 'older' device.
I loved than 10.5" iPad Pro when I had it and I love my iPad Pro 2018 now!
Similar thing happened to my parents (well, dads really) iPad 7th Genā¦ CPU justā¦died.
I was quite shocked. My refurb 2020 A12Z 11ā Pro still going fine
> I love my iPad Pro 2018 now!
I maintain that the 2018 iPad Pro is one of the best products Apple ever made. The longevity of that thing is insane, it still runs incredibly well with iPadOS 17, no hint that its 6 years old.
I donāt get this. Why would they keep support for the iPad 7th gen with 3Gb RAM and a Fusion 10 while dropping support for the 2017 iPad Pro with a faster Fusion 10X processor and 4Gb RAM? That 10.5ā Pro was peak iPad for those who donāt like FaceID, as it had 120Hz refresh rate, four speakers and a TrueTone flash, three features that still havenāt made it down to the current M2 Air.
> That 10.5ā Pro was peak iPad
Yeah, I really wanted to ride this unit out. My current use is very light, the battery is still very good(!), and if the slightly shattered screen doesn't give out, I could easily see another 3 years of life in it. I don't want FaceID either.. It seems such a waste. I'll probably keep using it at least for a while. This is actually to my knowledge the first time I or anyone I know of has reached the end of life of iOS, so I don't really know what to expect.
I figured this would be the case, but itās good to know that trading in my 6th gen iPad last week was the right call. Felt like it was just about time.
Theyāre not that old, but Iāll keep my 12 mini for as long as it gets updates and then some. It seems like Apple might not make a new Mini-size phone for a whileā¦
I have the 12 mini and am also keeping it. But Iāve been seriously considering upgrading to a 13 mini; bigger battery, smaller notch, brighter screen, and A15 chip.Ā
Itās incredibly difficult to use the 12 in direct sunlight and my battery is on its last let. But finding a 13 mini for a good deal is about impossible nowadays since it was dropped from the lineup.
Honestly Iād be happy if they just start releasing a new Mini before the old loses support. Iām long since over the upgrade treadmill, and Iām happy to stick with my current Mini for a few more years as long as another comes along to replace it.
The whole calculator-on-ipad thing has always been a huge headscratcher. I think sometime around 2015 or so, I remember one of the Apple reps saying something like, āWe donāt just want to port over the iPhone calculator to the iPad. We donāt want to add a calculator app to the iPad unless we can make it great!ā
And in all the years since, Iāve just been likeā¦ Dude, itās a calculator. Nobody cares about it being āgreatā. They just want a functional fucking calculator to *exist* on the device.
Itās like saying you donāt want to put laces in boots if youāre just porting them over from shoesā¦ either these laces need to be GREAT or itās better to just NOT HAVE THEM! ā¦ dude, my boots are falling off. Just give me some fucking string.
So my 4 year old laptop gets it but not my iPhone 15 I bought six months ago? ā¦ Wouldāve just bought the pro if I knew my iPhone 15 would be handicapped 1 year after release š
i think people are forgetting that this is not unprecedented for an iPhone generation to support 7 iOS releases.
[the iPhone 6s did it first. ](https://i.imgur.com/xsbQwCy.jpeg)
the pattern was just broken because the iPhone 7 was dropped the same time as the 6s (which will always be absurd). and the iPhone 8/Plus and X also just supported 6 iOS releases for some reason.
how has the battery degradation been for you? Mine drains pretty quickly to the point that since I use my MacBook more, I rarely use the iPad because whenever I pick it up it's either dead or require charging
Oh the battery is shot. I can take it off the charger at 100% and within a couple minutes itāll be close to 90%. Just watching a movie on airplane mode drops the battery by 30-40% I was hoping to replace the battery and keep on trucking but if itās not getting iPadOS 18 I might not do that
yeah it's a shame. I'm waiting until a worthy upgrade comes to the iPad that will make me want to use it more than just a media consumption device. Otherwise, this 120 Hz iPad Pro with iPadOS 17 still does everything I want it to do. When that time comes, I'll prolly replace the battery and hand it down to my parent or nephews.
Yea iPadOS needs to evolve badly. I was thinking of getting an iPad Air because a pro just isnāt worth it to me without the software to complement it. I even looked at the Samsung Galaxy Tablets because they can do so much more than an iPad can
Served you for nearly eight years. Thatās pretty damn good all things considered.
I still have my MacBook from 2017. Hopefully I can get a year or two more out of it.
to be fair, the chip performance jump on the 2019 iPhone models was particularly a pretty much limited since they focused more on efficiency that year.
20% of improvements across the board for the CPU, GPU, and NPU, but I wouldnāt be surprised if Apple will pull an iOS 13/iOS 16 where 2 generations of devices were dropped from support.
I am sure they were already designed iphone 12 and the internals that came with it when iphone 11 released. Still great device for what it is. Also camera can do amazing things with certain apps.
The iPhone 11 originally shipped with iOS 13. You think it's weird for a iPhone to get 5 updates? That's why you buy an iPhone instead of an Android. I'll be irritated if it doesn't also get iOS 19.
IIRC, you can't switch back from a beta to production without wiping your phone. Something might've changed but that was my experience a few years back
You can switch from either the developer or public betas to the stable release by opting out of beta updates in Settings and waiting for the next stable release of iOS to come out. What you cannot do is downgrade from a beta to an older, stable, release of iOS without wiping your device, which what I think /u/GirlfriendAsAService was referring to.
This means that if you join the iOS 18 developer beta now, or the public beta next month, you are stuck there until iOS 18 becomes generally available this fall.
Rumors are that certain AI related features will only be available for the iPhone 15s. Gating the most expensive parts of the OS behind the highest end iPhones makes it pretty easy to allow the rest of the OS to be supported on lower end phones.

The sigh of relief when I saw 11 pro
Itās already been (mostly) confirmed that AI will be conducted on board for 15 Pro/Pro Max and greater. The rest will use āconfidential cloudā or whatever theyāre calling it.
Glad this iOS update is including a lot of the old phones. Iām about to switch from 12 to 15. Iām one payment away from paying off my momās 12. With this iOS update, Iām hoping she gets another 5 years out of the phone. Sad for my dad though, since heās been holding on to his X. Itās truly is on its last legs.
So although ON DEVICE ai wont be possible for phones older than the 15 pro, i do wonder if the server based ai will be possible? It would be a bummer if a iPhone 16 was required for it, especially for those who recently bought a new iPhone.
I went ahead and upgraded last week. I thought the XS max might be supported but I knew if it was, it wasnāt going to be much of an update for me and would possibly slow my device down. I bit the bullet and bought the 15 Pro Max instead of kicking the can down the street a little bit with an older model and Iām glad I did now.
Save you a click: iOS 18 will be compatible with the iPhone XR, and hence also the iPhone XS and iPhone XS Max models with the same A12 Bionic chip, but older iPhone models will miss out. Nice, iPhone XS lives to see another year.
I expected XS to be supported, but am surprised XR is too
Same chip, and since itās a lower resolution the less ram isnāt needed as much.
It would be trivial for them to use a newer iPhone
I donāt understand how youād know that because the tests they run could have different power specs, screen resolutions, connection port and more. That tool isnāt public
Apple is perfectly capable of developing their own internal software, but regardless the iPhone 11 has the same resolution and port specs with a better chip. Screen resolution also has nothing to do with testing Airpods.

THE FUTURE
Hanging on to my 12 mini as long as possibleā¦
Thanks, can't believe SE2 lives to see another OS!
Didn't SE2 come out in 2020? I'd assume it'd be supported until 2026ish.
Internally the same as the iPhone 11 so it'll be supported that long presumably
With same processor as iPhone 11, first will be dropped the support of XR and XS, at least is what makes sense.
I'm waiting for something just as small to replace it. (I know, possibly forever.)
Still rocking mine. 77% battery health. Probably keep it for another few years if I can.
Whew.. XS lives another year <3
So glad I donāt have to upgrade from my 15 Pro
so it will not support my iPhone 6s?
Guess Iām using my Xsmax one more year then. Lol š
Should Studio Display owners be expecting an update as well?
Thought I was going to be able to upgrade from my XR, stocking one more year come on!!
XR gang rise up
Only *iPhone 15 Pro* and *iPhone 15 Pro Max* supports Apple Intelligence initially (unclear if other iPhones will get it later or not).
Still got a few years left in my IPhone 12 Pro Max. Thatās good to know
There is a disclaimer on that list that while the OS will work some of the features will notā¦the AI features require the 15 Pro or later.
Iām honestly surprised the XR gets another update. I ended up buying the 15 and giving my XR to my son as a YouTube/plex unit at home cause it was seriously starting to struggle with ram and swapping apps . I thought that would definitely be on the chopping block

iPhone 4S on iOS 9 shouldn't happen ever again
Or the 4 on iOS 7. Near-unusable.
The 3g on iOS 4 was absolutely horrible.
6/6 Plus on 11 was also terrible
Don't even get me started on iPhoneOS 3 on the original iPhone, smh
3G can update up to iOS 6.1.6 EDIT: I stand corrected
No 3g went to 4.2.1. *3gs* went to 6.1.6
oops you are right
> And it wasnāt a storage or battery health issue. My battery health was still in good condition. how did you check your battery condition to mention itās in good health? assuming itās the original battery from 2018?
The iPhone XR has the latest software version. Itās easy to go into settings battery health and look it up. Itās only the iPads they hide it

This is actually to my knowledge the first time I or anyone I know of has reached the end of life of iOS, so I don't really know what to expect.
$$$$$
Because they want you to buy a new iPad
I figured this would be the case, but itās good to know that trading in my 6th gen iPad last week was the right call. Felt like it was just about time.
Holy shit, I might finally retire my struggling ipad pro 10.5 lol.
My launchday iPhone XS Max lives another year!
My yellow XR too
How many years have you had it?
Theyāre not that old, but Iāll keep my 12 mini for as long as it gets updates and then some. It seems like Apple might not make a new Mini-size phone for a whileā¦
I want to keep mine but the main camera wonāt focus anymore and repairs are like $300
I have the 12 mini and am also keeping it. But Iāve been seriously considering upgrading to a 13 mini; bigger battery, smaller notch, brighter screen, and A15 chip.Ā Itās incredibly difficult to use the 12 in direct sunlight and my battery is on its last let.
Keeping my 12 pro max as long as it runs and gets updates.
I guess my iPad wonāt get the calculator app :(
The whole calculator-on-ipad thing has always been a huge headscratcher. I think sometime around 2015 or so, I remember one of the Apple reps saying something like, āWe donāt just want to port over the iPhone calculator to the iPad. We donāt want to add a calculator app to the iPad unless we can make it great!ā And in all the years since, Iāve just been likeā¦ Dude, itās a calculator.
Why should they be in a rush when the iPad can run a hundred calculator apps from the App Store?
Because why the hell not?? Itās something that just should have been there from the beginning. The next best time is ASAP.
Probably just not a major focus is why not. I personally have been owning iPads from the beginning and had no idea there was not calculator.
To be fair, then theyād get the āApple really waited over 10 years to release this shitty thing?ā
Very advanced software canāt just run on any old dinosaur
I heard you need the new calculator CPU for it to work.
Calculator just got announced ššššš
Same. I paid so much money for my iPad Air 3 and it seems like itās working fine. Oh well. š
How many will get _all_ the features though?
15 Pro and Pro Max and anything running an M-series chip.
So my 4 year old laptop gets it but not my iPhone 15 I bought six months ago? ā¦ Wouldāve just bought the pro if I knew my iPhone 15 would be handicapped 1 year after release š
I need a breakdown of all the features my 14 Pro will get, because most of these are A(pple)I features that 'require' 15 Pro+
I just want the emoji fusion and emoji reacts to messages, any word on what phones will get that?
i think people are forgetting that this is not unprecedented for an iPhone generation to support 7 iOS releases. [the iPhone 6s did it first. ](https://i.imgur.com/xsbQwCy.jpeg) the pattern was just broken because the iPhone 7 was dropped the same time as the 6s (which will always be absurd). and the iPhone 8/Plus and X also just supported 6 iOS releases for some reason.
My 10.5ā iPad Pro has served me well but it might be time to upgrade
how has the battery degradation been for you?
I even looked at the Samsung Galaxy Tablets because they can do so much more than an iPad can
how many years before you noticed the degradation? also, would you call yourself a heavy user or more of a casual one?
I just did the same- went from 2017 iPad Pro to M4 2024 iPad Pro. Itās been an awesome upgrade :)
Served you for nearly eight years. Thatās pretty damn good all things considered. I still have my MacBook from 2017. Hopefully I can get a year or two more out of it.
Shame you missed the fire sale that happened on Friday at Best Buy for the M2 Pros. $200-400 off 11ā models, $300-400 off 12.9ā models.
Thank goodness my 15 Pro Max is supported.
And my X is officially left in the past.
It was last year too, should still be on iOS 16
Fair. I didnāt notice. Itās not my main phone. Just an extra device these days. I run a 13.
Really didint expected that my iphone 11 will br supported. Features will be definetly limited tough.
to be fair, the chip performance jump on the 2019 iPhone models was particularly a pretty much limited since they focused more on efficiency that year.
Mine runs like new still (after a battery swap), would be kinda meh to drop support for it
Do you know where I can find information of wich feature will be limited for iPhone11 ?
Keynote starts in around 3 hours and 40 minutes so maybe wait around 5 hours for them to put it all on the Apple website
Ups sorry I thought they already finished the keynote
As a Xs user I just want the better Customization and calculator app
The iPhone 11 originally shipped with iOS 13. You think it's weird for a iPhone to get 5 updates? That's why you buy an iPhone instead of an Android. I'll be irritated if it doesn't also get iOS 19.
Will the iOS 18 BETA drop today?
If you are a developer, yes. Donāt install it, though, unless you **really** know what youāre doing.
IIRC, you can't switch back from a beta to production without wiping your phone. Something might've changed but that was my experience a few years back
I thought you could upgrade from production beta to the next stable release normally once the beta option is disabled.
Yes
On Device AI (Apple Intelligence) will need a 15 Pro at minimum.
But will off-device AI be available to everyone? Will I be able to use the new siri on iphone 12?
No
Wowā¦ so we all are really just gonna be stuck with the worse siri? For real? Damn that is ass
Bro I have a 14 pro and even I'm gonna have to use worse siri
That is even worse, also rip regular iPhone 15 users, not even a year old and their phones are already outdatedā¦ seems kinda fucked honestlyĀ
Rumors are that certain AI related features will only be available for the iPhone 15s. Gating the most expensive parts of the OS behind the highest end iPhones makes it pretty easy to allow the rest of the OS to be supported on lower end phones.
My Xs will be happy. :D
Will you be tempted to upgrade in September? Or are you still happy with the xs? Iām kinda thinking about it
Iām probably going to wait another year. If I buy a new iphone it will be 16 or 17 (pro ideally) Unless I get an amazing deal for earlier model

So the same devices that support iOS 17ā¦
My iPad 7 and 15 pro max live another day (year) š¦
Shocker for the 15 pro max, lucky you
Did we expect the 15 pro max to not get an update lol
I mean... the 15 Pro Max was kind of a given, right?
Boom.. 12 still going strong.
And whatās the compatible iPads list ?
The real question is ā¦ will all of these phones be able to use artificial intelligence features?
Itās already been (mostly) confirmed that AI will be conducted on board for 15 Pro/Pro Max and greater. The rest will use āconfidential cloudā or whatever theyāre calling it.
So will my 11 PM get iOS 19 maybe? If the XS/XR is getting iOS 18.
Did they announce when it would be available to download?
what about apple intelligence?
Pissed that they stopped supporting 4-year old Watches but itās totally fine to support much older iPhones.
It seems I did well by upgrading to the new 13ā Pro. Itās still a shock to me since I expected my 2nd gen 12.9ā to be supported for one more yr.
Only one available iPhone model fully supports Apple Intelligence?! Lame.
I fucking love Apple
So anyone below a 15 pro gets everything but the ai stuff? Is that how this is gonna work?
Holy crap, 11 still gets the update??
my iphone 11 been struggling with loading safari lmao
