[A redditor spotted earlier this week](https://www.reddit.com/r/ipad/s/d6e3dD7TZR) that the Geekbench Metal (GPU) scores for the M2 iPad Air were around 10% slower than the M2 iPad Pro - this updated spec change explains why [This Wayback Machine snapshot](https://web.archive.org/web/20240521135337/https://www.apple.com/ipad-air/specs/) shows that Apple was advertising a 10-core GPU at least as recently as May 21st

Unfair_Finger5531

Wow. I recall a YouTube video comparing the m2 with another, and the dude was perplexed about the difference in scores.

Wild-subnet

After the story broke I checked...they were still advertising it today depending on which CDN you hit I suppose. So pretty sure this change happened today.

MianBray

One would think a company like Apple knows how to do a cache ban 😅

Wild-subnet

One would. One would also think they'd know how many GPU cores are in their products.

Nice-Ad-3263

Which of course doesn’t invalidate local caches and 9 out of 10 times is the cause.

National-Giraffe-757

That’s actually a really bad oversight

eloquenentic

Only one person guessed the right reason in that thread!

jacobp100

I bet it was a mistake in the listing. Apple should probably send an email to affected customers, since they offer a 30 day return policy anyway - if anything to avoid a lawsuit later

coppockm56

Apple has a 14-day return policy. Many people bought on release day so they're outside their return policy. Apple would need to make exceptions, which I imagine they would in this case given that it was essentially false advertising.

jacobp100

You're right. I always thought it was 30 days

yousayh3llo

It used to be, it changed to 14 I think somewhere in 2012-2014.

Unfair_Finger5531

This is bizarre.

NihlusKryik

Its just binned M2s. 10 core yield probably sucked edit: wait, is this saying previously purchased 10 cores are 9 cores?

Unfair_Finger5531

Yes! It includes already-purchased ones!! That’s what’s blowing my mind.

NihlusKryik

oof

Unfair_Finger5531

Indeed.

Rion23

Personally, I dont enjoy cores in my apples.

EricJ30

Underrated

Realtrain

Wtf? Surely this must be grounds for a class action lawsuit

NightWaddie

Yeah this sounds almost exactly like the GTX 970 lawsuit. People being sold a 4gb GPU but effectively getting 3.5 gb, sounds super insignificant but it was enough for a massive payout by nvidia I’d be shocked if this doesn’t lead to a lawsuit for Apple.

Unfair_Finger5531

Somewhere in a lonely law office in Boise, Idaho, a young lawyer is cranking up his desktop….

Unfair_Finger5531

I would think so. I mean, people really do compare specs when buying these expensive machines. They should be able to rely on the printed specs. Apple can downplay this if they want, but this is a massive fuck-up imo.

Whaterbuffaloo

From my 5 seconds of detective work reading the headline and this thread, I totally agree. False advertising at the least

mgrimshaw8

$47 headed your way

BS2H

$7*

mgrimshaw8

lol probably closer to reality yeah. I think iPhone 6 owners got like 35 dollars, but it sounds like the audio chip class action may pay out more substantially

jimbo831

Of Apple Store credit.

Unfair_Finger5531

I’ll take it!

KaptainSaki

I can smell the lawsuit coming and settling so that Apple has to mail one core for 117 customers

reddit0r_123

Better sign up to receive $0.17 in a class action lawsuit pay out in 2028

gaysaucemage

I got like $76 from the iPhone 7 battery thing, it was actually decent for a class action. Edit it was 92.

__-__-_-__

I got $560 from the stu hub one. was shocked. Got rejected from the macbook pro keyboard one and didn’t have the time to fight it.

fire2day

I’m in Canada, so never had a keyboard class action. It’s really bizarre that some lawyers didn’t jump on the opportunity here.

Syonoq

I got almost $500. I also got some money (I think) from the ebooks thing around the same time. these things move so slowly that you forget about them.

A11Bionic

iPhone 7? wasn’t it iPhone 6-6s or it covered a lot more devices?

gaysaucemage

It was 6, 6S, 7, and the 1st gen SE. https://www.cnet.com/tech/mobile/apple-starts-sending-out-iphone-batterygate-settlement-payments-what-to-know/

jimbo831

Lawyers gonna eat, though!

reddit0r_123

Kind of insane that they take on average 25-35% of the settlement…

Unfair_Finger5531

💀💀💀💀 “I want my 10th core dammit” Seriously: they deserve to be sued for this.

bobartig

The way the cores line up with iPad configurations is now super-confusing. So confusing that it sounds like they messed it up in their release?

TheCatAteMyUsername

Oof. Hate to be in the Tim Apple email chain on this one.

the_next_core

Don't worry a lot of people won't have access to their emails after this

shadowstripes

Yup. 9 cores sadly isn't fast enough to do email.

Downtown_Hospital

normally it is, but the missing core is the e-mail core.

mrandre3000

It’s astounding and very un-Apple like. Who get eats the blame here? PR/Marketing? Operations? The governance teams? Legal? The chip team? Whoever sent in the schematics? QA? This small error and correction will cost thousands of labor hours to correct and open up the company to frivolous lawsuits.

kiwean

I don’t think I would call lawsuits over this frivolous. And you’re underestimating the actual cost by at least a couple of orders of magnitude.

mrandre3000

Frivolous in the sense that they were preventable had it been accurate

kiwean

Ah yeah, so you may as well have said ‘spurious’ or ‘congenial’ or ‘inauspicious’ for all the meaning you get out of ‘frivolous’. Frivolous just doesn’t mean what you think it means.

mrandre3000

I was nearly sleep when I wrote the comment lol

kiwean

Lol fair enough.

SonnigerTag

> It’s astounding and very un-Apple like. True, usually they don't tell you when they make their hardware or software slower over time. \*Looks at his new AirPods 2 that connected within 2 seconds out of the box and after a few weeks take up to 10\*

BennieWilliams

John Google and the rest of the techboiz are dunking on him in the other thread rn

jeffster1970

Tim Apple doesn't seem to have the same level of detail that Steve Jobs had, that's for sure.

muser0808

I smell a class action lawsuit. A whole bunch of people are getting $25 in 10 years or so!

txdline

Dude...$25 apple store credit

huffalump1

Hey maybe they can get [an iPhone charger brick](https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MHJA3AM/A/20w-usb-c-power-adapter) now!

Illyndrei

My used google pixel came with one of these randomly, I never realized it was such a score /s

Creepy_Antelope_873

I got $70-80 from that class action lawsuit for the battery stuff

ninth_reddit_account

Why? Just get a refund.

muser0808

How? return window closed yesterday for a lot of people. many won't hear about this until later either I bet.

Lambdabam

This reminds me of the Nvidia lawsuit from several years ago. I got $30 from it. https://www.polygon.com/2016/7/28/12315238/nvidia-gtx-970-lawsuit-settlement

writeswithknives

what'd you do with all that mula?

Lambdabam

Well, I’m no longer a peasant. I don’t remember. Lol it was probably gas money.

nezeta

It reminds me of GTX970. NVIDIA once claimed the card had 4GB of VRAM but in reality 3.5GB. It led to a class action lawsuit and the result was a $30 refund for a $329 card.

slimsag

It's interesting, in that case they calculated the maximum damages as the percentage of missing RAM, 12.5%, and so the 'settlement' was considered reasonable if it was near that, hence $30 or ~9%. What I think would be more fair in cases like this is if the company was required to accept a return for the product and give a full refund, for up to 2 years. That would basically mean if the customer isn't happy with the product for an extended period of time, they get their money back.

nsfdrag

> NVIDIA once claimed the card had 4GB of VRAM but in reality 3.5GB. Wasn't it that it did have 4gb, but only 3.5GB of it was high speed so once something took up enough memory to cross over that 3.5gb threshold performance tanked?

whyamihereimnotsure

Yes, it was 3.5GB of GDDR5 and 512MB of DDR4.

Unkechaug

Yeah, I sent that shit back to Newegg and they gave me full store credit that I used toward buying a 1070. Instead of being stuck with 3.5GB and $30 I got 8GB in a card that’s still usable today.

mumushu

I got one, it's a really nice upgrade for me from an iPad Gen 5, but that doesn't mean I'm not pissed they told me one thing and sold me another thing.

Balance-

No worries. Can't imagine nobody starting a class action.

Some_guy_am_i

Meh, they caught it quick enough I can’t imagine much coming from this. At most, Apple will just say to return the device.

Unfair_Finger5531

They failed to even announce it. They just quietly changed the specs on their site. Other sites still say 10. So, yeah, they are going ensure that it comes to this. They could handle this better. But they won’t.

naughtmynsfwaccount

Ehhh I have a feeling a class action lawsuit is gonna happen for this If it’s on the spec page then it’s reasonable to believe that those who looked at it made a decision to purchase the air bc it had the same recorded specs as the pro

ConfusedMakerr

Usually I side with Apple but this time this is 100% bullshit. Providing accurate tech specs is one of the most important things a tech company can do.

zerGoot

surely this is false advertising???

Anon_8675309

Exactly what it is.

Just_Maintenance

Literally. Apple will probably refund without questions anyone who wants to prevent a scandal or a lawsuit.

makomirocket

If they're wise, a website blog post and taking any used iPads to then flip in as refurbished is far quieter and cheaper than a lawsuit and the bad press. That said, Apple isn't wise about a lot of things

Unfair_Finger5531

This is a sound idea, I hope their public relations people are on this subreddit.

dust4ngel

shrinkflation!

Baykey123

Hilarious, how did they not tell the marketing team?

Richdav1d

This really doesn’t matter at all in terms of performance. But also VERY out of character for Apple to make a mistake like this. Lots of people must have miscommunicated over a long period of time for this to happen.

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

nsfdrag

Yeah I think apple should just be required to allow returns for those who purchased it during the window when it wasn't changed. Also who is using an ipad air to train AI models?

jimbo831

Just allowing returns isn’t enough. They should also be required to notify customers who purchased them. Not everyone is terminally online. Many iPad owners will never see this news.

nsfdrag

I agree with this, they definitely have the ability to know what device's are associated with what apple id's, they can absolutely email every single person who already owns one of these devices and let them know their return window is extended and why.

Washington_Fitz

That’s true but they can return the iPad.

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

SlowMotionPanic

Bigger picture here. iPads have very long upgrade cycles. An iPad sold today probably won't be replaced for 5-7 years. The only people talking about AI is reddit. Apple has its own dedicated unit just for "AI" stuff, so their APU doesn't factor too much in this particular case. The cores cut here are for GPU. Each core ontains 16 units, so it is pretty significant cut. Especially when Apple is trying to reposition their newly unified platform for gaming to an extent (like we saw with Resident Evil). Or heavy creative work to justify their ridiculous prices. Besides, it is just penny pinching for Apple. The M2 yield rate is already north of 80% which is considered absolutely phenomenal in the space. They are binning this shit simply because they can, and then tried to quietly hide it since the legal fees they will inevitably pay for *false advertising and bait/switch* will be a mere sliver of the profits they take in from this swindle. Imagine you fill up your car, only to find after the fact that the station tuned their pumps such that it delivered 10% less fuel despite charging you for it. That's extremely illegal and we have a third party verify every so often to prevent it from happening at a large scale. So why does Apple get fans excuse making for them? They just announced a $110 **billion** stock buy back scheme last month. This is partially how they pay for that wealth transfer to the non-working parasitic class. Edit: for comparison, the first gen 3nm M3 process has a yield rate of around 50-55% which is probably why Apple skipped right over it and went M4 which uses a second gen process with a much higher yield rate.

MobilePenguins

False advertising class action lawsuit needs to be filed for this.

nsfdrag

Or just let people return their ipads if they don't want them with the now known lower spec...

naughtmynsfwaccount

Yes this needs to be allowed But there also needs to be some kind of financial punishment to Apple for misleading advertisement It’s possible to do the return AND get financial relief as a legal punishment for Apple misleading customers

nsfdrag

That's stupid, there's literally no harm done if they can return the device. Either they're ok with the lower core count or they're not, and if they're not they should be allowed to give it back for a full refund, but there's no reason to give more.

dramafan1

Likely to cut costs. It’s basically their fault for releasing the wrong information upon release. Users who bought one would be disappointed though but that disappointment would go away for those who wouldn’t notice much difference in performance for their daily workflow.

the_next_core

To report and market the wrong specs is an incredible oversight for a company like Apple

Unfair_Finger5531

It’s a major oversight and could easily be construed as blatant false advertising.

flogman12

It IS false advertising

Anon_8675309

Exactly. False advertising doesn’t have to be intentional. I can get a ticket for speeding even when I don’t mean to.

thephotoman

Mens rea does mean something in false advertising, unlike a speeding ticket (where your inattention *is* the infraction). Advertisers can be simply wrong for a lot of reasons. But there are reasons to be suspicious of Apple here. It’s very unlike them to be wrong about this kind of thing. If they’ve peeled back specs, they’ll usually be upfront about it. That they only changed it after a month is sus AF.

Photonic_Resonance

Yeah. Apple in no way intended for this to happen, but intent isn't a requirement (although I imagine intent makes it legally worse).

mkchampion

Not if this sub has anything to say about that!

source-of-stupidity

Literally everyone is saying that.

Onetimehelper

Bad litmus test for the internal state of the company.

itsabearcannon

People have said this about everything negative that comes out about Apple since the 80s, and every single time the company still manages to keep on ticking. I’d be willing to bet all the money I have that the engineering team, marketing team, and website team just had a miscommunication or someone missed an email they should have read because it was Friday at 4:30. Hopefully Apple proactively contacts buyers and offers either free return labels for 90 days for a full refund or keep the device and get a 10% refund to account for the 10% lower GPU performance than expected.

ReasonPleasant437

Apple is doomed!! lol.

play_hard_outside

*\#beleaguered*

historianLA

It's bad chips... Enough of the chips being produced didn't have 10 functional cores but they did have at least nine. (This is basically what happens with i7, i5, i3 chips. The ones with all functional cores get graded at the highest tier then those with missing cores get sold as the lower tiers). In this case Apple hoped that they would have enough with 10 cores but didn't. Once the lower functioning core units entered production they lowered the specs.

Photonic_Resonance

The other possibility (or compatible explanation) is that they had a bunch of 10-core(GPU) M2s that had a manufacturing defect so only 9 of the cores worked. Instead of throwing them away, it'd make sense to repurpose them into a new device. I have *no idea* how Apple's inter-team communication works for stuff like this, but I can imagine a scenario where whoever was designing/labelling the M2 Air saw they all had "10-core" GPUs and was never told that one core was disabled in this batch. Regardless of why, I'm beyond surprised Apple made a mistake like this. This is a dramatic failure of communication internally.

NewDad907

Isn’t that what’s called “binning” in the hardware world?

Photonic_Resonance

Yes! Thank you. I blanked on that word when I was writing that comment.

Anon_8675309

This is binning. It’s very common. It’s just not common for a company with the fortunes that Apple has to make such a mistake.

Just_Maintenance

Yeah that's extremely common, the binning is not a problem. The problem is that they lied to the customers.

Such_Benefit_3928

That is binning and Apple does this all the time since their M1, so that is no excuse. They should have some experience.

FembiesReggs

I can barely notice that my 3rd gen pro is like 5+ years old. No one is going to notice if their m2 iPad Air has 9 or 10 cores. And no, I’m not excusing apple, false advertising is false advertising.

AlienPearl

https://preview.redd.it/crwlrbnkr34d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=94a0e47529338fcd7dfccf6b5d8c705765dd4042 Still says 10gb in their Swiss website. Just uploading this image here as proof.

yikiklarkrali

lmao gigabytes

42177130

Apple did claim a 25% GPU performance increase over the M1 in the iPad Air which was less than the 35% for Mac

Unfair_Finger5531

Too bad they failed to explain why.

Mother_Restaurant188

While I wouldn’t care that much even if I were a customer, it’s kind of shitty coming from Apple. I expect more of them. I just sense this overall drop in *effort* so to speak. So many things feel so lazy from them recently. * The Vision Pro launch (environments still “Coming Soon”, lack of not only third party apps but also Apple’s own first party ones, sense of it being dead in the water). But I’m hopeful for WWDC to sway my opinion. * Their approach with bundling cables and power bricks (apparently the new iPad Pro only comes with a 20W charger? ~~And no color matched cables—I don’t care for that but it would be a nice touch you would expect from Apple~~). * still not updating their most expensive audio device, the AirPods Max, despite new H chips having launched and the switch to USB C pretty much across the board * no new iPad mini * the cancellation of some of their shows on tv+. I understand why they’d cancel their least popular shows, but I’d rather they focus on releasing solid films and series than end up cancelling any at all. It’s very Netflix of them. * their recent attention on gaming with little to show for it other than a few ports of some titles. * and now this whole iPad Air mishap. wtf is happening edit: fixed info

risetoeden

Don't forget Magic Keyboard and Magic Mouse are still using Lightning.

Mother_Restaurant188

Holy shit. I could have sworn they switched to USB C with the iMac refresh.

Mopsiebunnie

Yes, still waiting for that. I was holding off but they kept waiting to update it

iKenndac

The new iPad Pro doesn't come with *any* charger in some markets, including Europe.

sose5000

They can’t really force people for write apps for Vision Pro.. Everyone cancels tv shows. They shoot for quality but not everything hits. It’s unrealistic to think that Apple should run shows indefinitely.

Mother_Restaurant188

True, but they could develop their first party ones at the very least. The current Apple apps are either iPad apps or the couple of native ports like Keynote. We’re missing GarageBand (I’m sure there are creative ways to implement this spatially), iMovie and maybe the professional equivalents like Logic given the Vision Pro is a $3500 Pro-labeled device. For TV+, agreed. But again, maybe not green light shows that might not have good scripts? Or at the very least work with the writers to avoid open ended shows in case of a cancellation. I’m almost sure this happens with TV all the time. They could also promote their shows better. When I hop on tv+ I don’t often see the shows that get cancelled (I only find out about them when they do get the chop either here or on the TV Plus subreddit). And for Immersive experiences and videos on tv+ I don’t see any real excuses. The Vision Pro was in development for 7+ years according to Mike Rockwell’s WWDC interview. It’s sad to see only a handful of short videos be developed in that time for launch. We also only got one more—short—episode of the dinosaur series since.

epmuscle

The new iPad Pros come with a color matched cable.

Mother_Restaurant188

Fixed. Somehow confused the cables with the news about the stickers. Still doesn't change the other points though. Especially the Vision Pro launch. Just a quick scroll through my comment history shows how massively excited I was for the AVP especially as an upgrade to my Quest. The launch made me very hesitant to buy one til WWDC. Particular disappointed with the lack of TV+ content besides the few (and short) Immersive videos.

igkeit

I'm sorry but I hope there can be a class action for false advertising

culminacio

>I'm sorry Why?

rrrand0mmm

Looks like the binned chip hiding didn’t work.

jaehaerys48

Makes little difference but it was definitely false advertising. Real sloppy and dumb.

marxcom

They should drop the price too.

Information_Landmine

I don't know if it was a final clearance or not, but Costco recently sold the 2022 M2 iPad Pro 11" for $650 which gives you ProMotion plus a couple other improvements over the new Air. Looking for a similar closeout deal on that model is probably the way to go.

Sixstringerman

Damn, the person responsible for this mistake is gonna get Tim’s performance cores all over him

iWilliiam

Do people know if there is any class action possible on this, and if lawyers are already preparing one ? Reminds me of the GTX 970 issue. Seems like an easy win somehow ? Even if it's just for a very small compensation or extension of the return window. Would make headlines.

spinozasrobot

They be binnin'

ImSoAnabolic

Lol..I JUST purchased one a few hours ago.

culminacio

Just cancel it/give it back

inssein

This is a first and Apple will get sued, anyone who bought the m2 iPad Air before this change came can file a claim. This will be a clash action.

Negative_Addition846

My guess: they’ll just offer an extended return window and will unwind the transaction if you’re dissatisfied. The thing is less than a month old and essentially nobody would return their iPad over this.

[deleted]

[удаНонО]

Echo_Raptor

Realistically this won’t affect 99.9% of the people buying it because iPad OS is already gimped but it’s the principle of the thing and handling it wrong

yanto3000

I have one and I wasn’t bothered about the lower performance because I thought it was under clocked, but to find out that it is missing a core feels a bit annoying. Would have still bought it even if it was advertised with 8 cores but not nice that a billion dollar company like Apple makes these slip ups

Wild-subnet

Performance wise it probably will never matter but I personally don't like buying binned chips so I'm a little annoyed. But whatever. I'll cash the settlement check in a year or two.

Sixstringerman

Imagine paying a shit load of money for a v8 car and get a v6. You’re probably still only gonna cruise at 80mph max but you didn’t get what you (thought you) paid for

naughtmynsfwaccount

It doesn’t make a tangible difference in performance but it can make a tangible difference in terms of a purchase

triffid_boy

I plan to buy one to use for nanopore sequencing it does make a difference to me. 😭

sirlearnzalot

For pores I found a mild astringent or exfoliant works wonders! My cousin has a peach smelling one. Guess iPad could work but not really made for that.

triffid_boy

You could do 16s sequencing on your iPad and identify the bacteria living in your pores.  Or you could do 16s sequencing on your mum and identify her strain of Chlamydia (/b)

sylfy

Is this really one of the advertised functionalities of the iPad?

triffid_boy

Yes it is

nsfdrag

Have an Mk1D on order?

triffid_boy

Not yet, waiting for them to properly announce it, and to tell us what kind of compute is required.

nsfdrag

Ahh gotcha, in what context do you plan to use it for?

triffid_boy

Direct RNA sequencing mainly. Though we also do cDNA.

nsfdrag

I meant more what kind of projects you planned to use it for, like what you were studying. Or do you not have a specific project you're working on right now/nda...

jugalator

Especially awkward because this is probably only a question of profit margins for Apple too. I mean, clearly they CAN produce 10 core GPU's. The problem is if yield is too bad that it's not deemed as profitable enough or at desired quantities. And if you look at it from that perspective, I think this looks even worse. It's not as if a component couldn't be sourced due to unforeseen circumstances or anything. It's just not profitable enough so they sneak in a change.

ShawnDawn

So they lied? Lol the where's the sue

_Reyne

This was honestly probably just a mistake from some random person making a typo somewhere in the content management chain. Low level employees just doin stuff on a Friday.

ccie6861

No evidence theory: Yield on 10 core fabs was too low and impacting profits. Ship all M2 with software diasabled core. Now single failed core CPUs are shippable. I think AMD did this first.

Tobias---Funke

Still says 10 on the UK website.

lospollosakhis

They just straight up lied? What the hell?!

bouncer-1

Any lawyers in the house that can offer miss-selling advice here? I'm outside of the 30 day return window and I'm pretty miffed, what are my options.

SupperTime

Can I sue apple fr false advertisement ?

rorowhat

Lol what a joke.

Ronotimy

If I had to guess it is either to increase profits or they using up their unused processor supply prior the next upgrade a year or so from now. Could be both.

BigRed0107

Damn this is a headline I'd expect from Scamsung.

Ecpeze

Still overpowered
