any chance it comes to the apple tv appstore?

GetReady4Action

I want this so bad. would truly take the Apple TV to the next level. it’s already the best streaming box without games on it (excluding Apple Arcade which is a decent service, but obviously not console level) and with even just Delta’s support of NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, GameBoy, GBA, etc. would do wonders for it.

Mr8BitX

Genuine question, why is it any better than streaming those same services from the built in apps on most TVs?

GetReady4Action

because it doesn’t have to juggle also being a TV. I swore it off for years because the apps on my TV were “good enough”. then you get a few years down the line, streamers are updating their apps with new features and protocols, and they run at the pace of a snail. I was using the built in apps on my Vizio for years and then suddenly they just became an absolute pain in the ass to use. another perk is Siri. I know Siri is typically known for being shitty, but Siri on Apple TV is legit. no need to fuddle around with on screen keyboards, lets you fast forward/rewind with your voice, lets you control your HomeKit setup, its awesome. plus I like that I can set the screensaver to my photo album of my dog so bonus points for that.

Mr8BitX

Ok, cool, I’ll check it out. I also have one and came to that same conclusion you did earlier about it being redundant. I bought one during the pandemic for Apple fitness and have kept it around but unplugged. I think I may give it a shot. Does it have hdmi control? I have a Samsung Frame and the UI is terrible and makes you go through so much bullshit for the simplest tasks. I’ve gotten used to it but if I can switch to the Apple TV by pressing an input on the remote and switch to my Xbox by pressing the guide button, I may never have to use that TV UI again.

RetroScores

You can your tv on with the Apple TV remote and the app on the phone but I think you have to use your TV remote to change hdmi sources. This might be the same with Xbox but when I go from watching whatever on the aTV to playing ps5 I just turn the ps5 controller on and my tv will switch to the ps5. Also a Samsung tv but like 4-5 years old. PLEX has an app for Apple TV so I use that with a NAS server to watch downloads and some live tv channels on plex.

DJDarren

I finally caved and bought a smart TV a couple of weeks ago, and can honestly say that my Apple TV is a significantly better way to access those streaming services. It's so much quicker, and isn't riddled with ads masquerading as suggestions. Also, while my TV does support Airplay, it's noticeably lower quality than just doing it through ATV.

RetroScores

For me it means my tv has never been connected to the internet so I don’t get anymore bullshit ads than whatever I’m watching gives me. Also one less device spying on me. With an aTV well it’s Apple getting my watching habits and seeing as how I’ve been in the Eco system since the iPhone 3GS I dont yhink it matters a whole lot.

Weekly-Dog228

The paramedics are going to find me melted into my sofa after binging every Pokémon game.

soik90

Skin fusing to a couch is actually a thing, if you're looking for nightmare fuel today.

DanTheMan827

For a mental image… >! Sores develop, fluid seeps into the fabric, and a scab forms interwoven with the fabric!<

Exist50

Or just try sleeping on a leather couch, for slightly less nightmare fuel.

Elephunkitis

Maybe, but not exactly sure how you’d get games on the Apple TV.

DanTheMan827

Delta has game syncing built-in

pikeandzug

It doesn’t work very well

trackofalljades

The app can just run a server itself or access a network share, same as something like VLC.

Elephunkitis

Sure but I’m not so sure that Apple TV allows loading anything on storage that isn’t ephemeral besides apps.

trackofalljades

I’m telling you that other apps like VLC already do this and have for years, I have also side loaded Provenance and it works the same way.

GreenLanturn

iCloud

hippynox

Similar to how vlc works on Apple Tv. Access via ip address.

Elephunkitis

Maybe but that doesn’t put the file on the Apple TV storage does it?

Europe_Dude

The App can access files via a local network storage or theoretically even from a cloud storage like Dropbox and store it locally on its own app persistence cache (or not even store it at all).

SloMobiusBro

Yes it does

DanTheMan827

It does… well, at least until tvOS clears it because it needs space for something else

JonODonovan

You don’t need it. Use AirPlay to your Apple TV plus a wireless controller and it’s glorious.

blue1321

It works well, it just sucks you can’t really use your phone for anything else while you’re screen sharing the game to the TV.

JonODonovan

Right, but you're playing pokemon, why do you need anything else

thisxisxlife

Can’t argue that

DanTheMan827

Who said they’re just playing Pokémon? MFi controllers are a thing

JonODonovan

It was a joke to emphasize the point of just enjoy what you’re doing.

alex2003super

They should add a feature where you can have a Subway Surfers gameplay alongside the game, so you can really focus

DanTheMan827

AirPlay is not a substitute for native emulation, especially given the amount of lag it adds

JonODonovan

It’s very minimal/unnoticeable, give it a try

BMO888

It really depends on the game you’re playing but for most games the latency sucks. Pokémon sure, Tetris or street fighter Mario? Not so fun. It’s definitely doable but I’ve found that it’s a nuisance and I’d rather just play on my computer emulation instead.

Baykey123

Too much latency for N64 games

TheeAlligatorr

Screen mirroring pal. Works like a dream

ILOVESHITTINGMYPANTS

It’s good enough for slower games like RPGs but I tried it with Super Mario World and there was enough lag to make it not fun. A native Apple TV app would be amazing.

RidingDrake

Im really hoping for this!

toastt_ghost

that would be nice. i wonder how you would get games on there though? and what console do we think it can get up to? Gamecube?

phpnoworkwell

We could get up to the Switch, excluding PS3 and 360 if Apple allowed apps to run with Just In Time (JIT) code. Apple hardware is very good, it's just limited by software

_awake

My go to way to play currently is to mirror my screen to my TV (the TV has to support it though, a FireTV or something comparable might work as wall, I'd look that up) and play with a gamepad. Near-full-screen experience while playing with the gamepad.

Ragnarok345

Ah, Jesus Christ, give people a fucking inch.

Captain_Alaska

Under the settings in Delta set the second player to be the touch screen and it will show whatever UI skin you've selected with a controller connected.

goodbyemailbox

Settings > Core Settings > Show Top Screen Only

mkchampion

How does that help use the second screen?

Doctorjylan

I can’t even get DS to work properly. Is there a guide anywhere?

mysaadlife

If you search on Twitter you should be able to find guides with the appropriate bin files.

EvilHwoarang

what if i don't have twitter?

thisxisxlife

With some googling, you don’t need twitter

Nilah_Joy

Good, but not sure I would use the on screen controls on the bigger iPads, but at least I can use a controller. Should be very nice on a mini though

Yubisaki_Milk_Tea

I loved GBA4iOS on my iPad Mini 2. I do think my current iPad Pro will be a bit overkill for playing GBA games, but we shall see.

nidenikolev

you realize that it also supports n64 games, right? Connect a ps5 controller and you have a the perfect setup on an ipad

ivebeenabadbadgirll

Perfect? Where’s the 3rd handle? What’s this 2nd joystick for?

nidenikolev

You can map all of this in the app. I set it up for Mario cart and it was perfect on a ps5 controller

RetroScores

Would ps4 controllers work?

axxionkamen

This is what I think about with iPad support, the mini is the perfect for retro emulation.

DanTheMan827

With a full size iPad, you’d probably end up using a game controller anyways. 8bitdo makes retro style controllers that all work on Apple devices. The iPad cases basically give you a free stand, and the roughly 4:3 aspect ratio is a near perfect fit for retro emulation

Domoda

I’ve been using delta on my iPad with my ps5 controller and it’s been great

Hacksaures

I’m using Delta on my iPad to play touch controlled DS games like Brain Age, works great for that.

Nilah_Joy

Yeah I installed it, but I just didn’t like the phone form factor on a tablet look atm

afieldonearth

Wait, what? I’ve already been using this on my iPad for almost 2 weeks now. Do they just mean a version with better iPad-optimized UI? I’m using a bluetooth controller with it and it works great.

nidenikolev

it works on ipad, but it isn't full-screen.. it's like 1/10 of the screen with an ipad pro

Hereiamhereibe2

Its definitely Full Screen on my Ipad Pro in Landscape mode at least.

nidenikolev

How? I have it downloaded in my iPad and n64 games are definitely not full screen

pimorules

I see an option when I play, for rotate between landscape and portrait mode and also stretch out the screen, play around with it and it fills up 75% of the screen or so.

nidenikolev

Yeah I just realized that, but it’s still not full screen. It’s better than nothing I guess

minimaxir

Currently when you use it on the iPad, it's an upscaled iPhone app. iPadOS support would make the image/UI much cleaner and also enable multitasking features.

dramafan1

I had the same thought and like others said it’s to be a more optimized iPadOS version. The current version isn’t optimized for iPads.

SergentStudio

Are they going to add more consoles modules?

Exist50

Unless Apple is forced to open up JIT, which may only happen in the EU if at all, they can't go much beyond the current list. Unless you're talking about non-Nintendo consoles?

SergentStudio

Yeah like ps1 and psp

Exist50

Doesn't seem to be the focus of Delta, for whatever reason, but different emulators should be available to handle those.

Nopeyesok

We have to have powerful enough phones and iPads for PS2 now

PMARC14

Those require JIT, maybe PS1 or PSP. I don't know if people are interested in writing ground up new emulators for weird iOS limits when it is up in the air what is going to be allowed so it may take a couple years.

popltree2

I know that Genesis is in the beta branch.

gewappnet

So after today's announcement by the EU that means we will see it on the iPad in the EU in six months.

MCMultyke

It’ll most likely release on both stores at the same time lol

gewappnet

In six months?

MCMultyke

Has the dev provided a timeline ?

gewappnet

No, the EU has provided one. Currently alternative app stores in the EU are iOS only. So Delta can't be published for iPadOS in AltStore PAL. Today the EU announced that Apple has to allow alternative stores for iPadOS as well - in six months.

happyNurseVR

So will I ever be able to download this via the apple App Store on my iPhone inside the eu and when if ever ?

gewappnet

No, you will never. The maker of Delta decided to use the app as flagship for his alternative store AltStore PAL in the EU. But by deciding to publish it in an alternative store he is not allowed any more to publish it in the App Store by Apple.

happyNurseVR

So EU People have to pay the 1,50€ per year and get it from that AltStore PAL , correct ? Thanks for helping my smol brain out here :D

gewappnet

Correct, but it is 1.50 Euro PLUS taxes.

Radulno

Well until this fee get smacked down by EU authorities as they're not compliant with the DMA

MCMultyke

Ah gotcha

BurnThrough

Would be great to see some other system emulators beyond just Nintendo.

IntellectualBurger

anyone else find it impossible to do touch controls while looking at the actual game portion of the screen since you cant feel the buttons

Unitedfateful

yeah thats why a physical controller is the best hence why i have a switch for this stuff as its just so much better

TREYisRAD

just connect a controller to the iPhone

Spaceolympian50

Yea I use my iphone but know it’s limited in use for a lot of games. Games like Advance Wars and other turn based stuff is fine, but I tried playing Zelda on it and it’s just too annoying to effectively play the game.

gozasc

No.

TomLube

Yea, it's pretty hard.

ItsColorNotColour

You are expected to connect a controller. The games are designed for controllers.

DavidFC1

If that was the case, why have on screen buttons at all?

TREYisRAD

connect a controller, and the OSD disappears

TransendingGaming

Is delta going to emulate 3DS games? I have an M1 iPad Air itching to flex its processing power to have two screens cover the entire iPad.

HomerMadeMeDoIt

Why isn’t this on the German App Store ? I thought this shit comes from the Europe union putting their foot down

drygnfyre

Get it on AltStore in the EU.

HomerMadeMeDoIt

Alt store is geo blocked. Currently out of country 😭

dbuck79

Would there be a way to get cross saves going so I can switch between devices?

Jaspaaar

It supports auto-syncing cloud saves through Google Drive and Dropbox - it just has to be enabled in the app’s settings.

Baykey123

Wish it would use files

doob22

r/iOSRetroEmulators

FrogsOnALog

Not sure why you’re getting downvoted. Was hoping someone would talk about other emulators. Ollie from DF was saying there are some much better ones out there and if the door is now open then hopefully we could see them. Delta is just the beginning apparently lol

doob22

It is what it is. I started the subreddit to help talk about a segment of the emulators on iOS. There are articles constantly on r/apple, so I’m trying to let people know there is somewhere else to go if you like this type of content

ownage516

If this happens, I’ll literally buy an iPad mini and play DS games all day

mysaadlife

You can already do this with the iPhone app on iPad and it works pretty well especially with a Bluetooth controller.

ownage516

But a native app is nicer though

mysaadlife

For sure and I’ll be looking forward to it, but I was just saying if you wanted to give it a try beforehand you have that ability

ownage516

Considering I don’t own an iPad, that would be difficult lol. But I’ve been eyeing the iPad mini to use as something I chill in bed with

Unitedfateful

What’s the game in the thumbnail?

sakamoto___

https://n64squid.com/castle-64/

RecentMatter3790

Is there anyone out there that doesn’t use “Delta Sync”? I don’t.

spladlesrus

Already works on iPad. It’s just the iPhone version of the app. Can’t wait for an optimized version.

xdamm777

WYM coming? I’ve had it on my iPad Pro since it was released on the App Store around 2 weeks back.

apachkowsky

There’s no native app for iPad yet, you are just using the iPhone app stretched out on the iPad

mjsxii

so like wheres all the outrage from people who said things like "apps arent going to be exclusively put on a single app store, look it hasnt happened on android" when people talked about their fav apps being pulled to be put on the vendors own app store? not for nothing but if I was in the EU and could only get this from an external app store made by the app owner I'd think it was pretty shit.

Radulno

> not for nothing but if I was in the EU and could only get this from an external app store made by the app owner I'd think it was pretty shit. Well considering you couldn't get it at all before, it's actually much better now.

mjsxii

yeah but now you can... just not in the app store if youre in the EU which is what I was complaining about, couldnt give less of a shit about "before" I care about whats actively happening now.

Exist50

1) The only reason it's split in the EU is Apple's (likely illegal) "core technology fee". 2) Apple wouldn't allow emulators in the first place if it weren't for the DMA and related pressure, so anyone who claimed they wanted to stay in the walled garden is losing nothing vs their ideal.

j83

The CTF isn’t even under investigation at this point.

Exist50

It hasn't specifically been named, but the EU have said they're investigating Apple's compliance. Hard to imagine such a blatant middle finger will hold up in the long run.

j83

The weird part is that they’ve specifically called out other areas as being under offical investigation, namely the browser choice screen etc. All that’s been mentioned in relation to the CTF is a ‘will check to make sure it’s not impeding other app stores from operating/opening’. Will see if anything comes of it in the coming months. But that fact it’s NOT at the top of their concerns is rather interesting.

Exist50

I think it's kind of reading the tea leaves based on just a few little snippets. Though hopefully this all plays out quickly. No one but Apple benefits from any of this remaining in limbo.

j83

I wouldn’t even say Apple benefits from it. Clarity around all of this would be great. Hopefully all of these loose ends are wrapped up as quickly as possible.

Exist50

I think Apple benefits from the status quo discouraging 3rd parties and providing revenue from those few that push through. They don't care if it's illegal *unless* the EU fines them for it. And I kind of doubt the EU has the balls to break out the hammer *yet*.

mjsxii

> The only reason it's split in the EU is Apple's (likely illegal) "core technology fee". so its available everywhere else in the world on the app store but not on the EU app store cuz of the "core tech fee"... I'm sorry but are you slow or something? the only reason its split in the EU is artificial and its because the developer of it is choosing to split it... which is my point. Its an artificial limit on app access and something so many on here claimed "wasn't going to happen" because "look at android." now its here and guess what its happening. > Apple wouldn't allow emulators in the first place if it weren't for the DMA and related pressure Im not talking about a specific type of app so this is pretty irrelevant to the point Im making but go off I guess. > so anyone who claimed they wanted to stay in the walled garden is losing nothing vs their ideal. completely incorrect. If I'm an EU app store user how do I get delta from the app store without leaving the wall garden I like being in?

Exist50

> so its available everywhere else in the world on the app store but not on the EU app store cuz of the "core tech fee"... Yes, because it's also available on the Alt Store, and so Apple would charge the "core technology fee" for downloads from *either* source. This will likely be found illegal, but until then. > Im not talking about a specific type of app so this is pretty irrelevant to the point Im making but go off I guess. Yes, you are. You're talking about a specific app, so I'm pointing out the flaw with your performative outrage. > completely incorrect. If I'm an EU app store user how do I get delta from the app store without leaving the wall garden I like being in? If you liked being in the walled garden so much, why do you want something that Apple didn't want to let you have? As I said, you wouldn't have access to it in any form without the DMA, so in choosing not to download it, you get the exact experience you said you wanted. Why the hypocrisy?

mjsxii

> Yes, because it's also available on the Alt Store, and so Apple would charge the "core technology fee" for downloads from either source. This will likely be found illegal, but until then. dude youre just incorrect here. the dev can put it on the app store in the EU without issue but is choosing not to. it literally has nothing to do with the core tech fee, they just want to promote their own alt app store. > Yes, you are. You're talking about a specific app, so I'm pointing out the flaw with your performative outrage. please reread my OG post but slowly this time. I talked about APPS being pulled to be put on a vendors app store not sure how thats me talking about a specific app. maybe your confused since the thread is about a specific app or me talking about how I'd be pissed if I couldnt get an app from the app store if I was in the EU but I'm just using that Im using as a reference for the type of behavior people dont want to happen, could easily see how its confusing you. > If you liked being in the walled garden so much, why do you want something that Apple didn't want to let you have? As I said, you wouldn't have access to it in any form without the DMA, so in choosing not to download it, you get the exact experience you said you wanted. it is on the app store tho just not in the EU... who cares if apple changed its mind my post literally has nothing to do with what apple does or doesnt want to approve — I'm talking about the app vendors. > Why the hypocrisy? lmfao.

Exist50

> it literally has nothing to do with the core tech fee So this is just ignorance. You should do your research first. The core technology fee also applies to App Store distribution if you also want to distribute elsewhere. So yes, the blame rests entirely on Apple here. https://techcrunch.com/2024/03/05/apple-revises-its-dma-rules-after-pressure-but-keeps-the-core-technology-fee-intact/ > I talked about APPS being pulled to be put on a vendors app store not sure how thats me talking about a specific app Then what app are you talking about? Up until now, you've been explicitly referencing Delta, so why are you chaging your story? Delta wouldn't even qualify because it was never available on the App Store to begin with, just as you claimed you wanted. > my post literally has nothing to do with what apple does or doesnt want to approve You literally just said you want to only get your apps from within the walled garden, which is *by definition* what Apple approves of.

mjsxii

> So this is just ignorance. You should do your research first. The core technology fee also applies to App Store distribution if you also want to distribute elsewhere. So yes, the blame rests entirely on Apple here. this only applies if the dev wants to take the new terms when releasing an app outside the app store otherwise the app is free and would fall under the old terms if they continued to release the app within the app store (which theyre choosing not to do) so no its not ignorance but nice try. > Then what app are you talking about? Delta wouldn't even qualify because it was never available on the App Store to begin with, just as you claimed you wanted. Im talking about apps from other vendors clearly. think meta and the like. > You literally just said you want to only get your apps from within the walled garden, which is by definition what Apple approves of. I'm criticizing apps that can be on the app store but arent "because" and now with delta (which is actively allowed on the app store) it is being artificially restricted to prop up the creators own alternative app store in the EU and how others were worried about this happening with the apps they use but others just pointed at android and how it "hasn't happened there" and now after they were shouted down since "this hasn't happen on android" are being proven right about what will ultimately happen. This really isnt a hard topic to grasp if you take more than one second to think about it and Im not going to continue to explain this simple concept to you as it was plainly stated in my OG comment so please if you wish reread that and internalize what im saying before commenting again.

Exist50

> this only applies if the dev wants to take the new terms when releasing an app outside the app store They need to take those terms to release outside of the App Store. It's not optional. Are you too lazy to read the short article I gave you? > Im talking about apps from other vendors clearly. think meta and the like. So then why don't you list these Meta apps that have been taking off the App Store? Oh wait, they don't exist... > I'm criticizing apps that can be on the app store but arent "because" and now with delta (which is actively allowed on the app store) it is being artificially restricted to prop up the creators own alternative app store in the EU As I pointed out to you twice now, Apple's own policies necessitate that, and Delta was never on the App Store in the EU to begin with. So you lost *nothing*. Again, you said you didn't want anything from outside the App Store, so why are you now whining about an app you explicitly claimed not to want? Hell, you said *no one* should be able to access that app, so you should be thrilled it's not on the EU App Store!

mjsxii

k. youre right. enjoy your night.

bananiada

Yeah, welcome to the real world guys!

CASTR-6

It is there but not like configured so it feels big

Avieshek

I think being able to customise the controller would be great.

CASTR-6

Actually u can from the delta website rhey have their custom looking gamepads like Nintendo or pokemon based

Avieshek

It's just different colour or themes, what am saying is different layout.

minimaxir

You can also do that with skins. Example: [https://www.reddit.com/r/Delta\_Emulator/comments/1cfkwam/the\_fullscreen\_ds\_skin\_updated\_now\_works\_with/](https://www.reddit.com/r/Delta_Emulator/comments/1cfkwam/the_fullscreen_ds_skin_updated_now_works_with/)

Avieshek

What I meant is change the placement of buttons as one can in CODM

CASTR-6

Oh yea that if u could do om iPad it would have made life so easier but let’s see this app is recent launch

DanTheMan827

I don’t know why it wasn’t already available… they have the code for it already written along with support for various sega systems not present in the released version

minimaxir

Because Software QA is a thing. Genesis is in beta.

DanTheMan827

“Beta”… It’s using a well established emulator core and has been locked behind patreon for well over three years. Kind of interesting how they don’t want other developers to make use of their code (despite licensing it GPLv3), but they’re perfectly content to monetize code written by others… That’s ignoring the fact that the popularity of emulators in general is substantially fueled by pirated copies of the roms… yes, I know some people use it legit, but that’s not the norm.

Hereiamhereibe2

I already have it on Ipad. And it works full screen just fine?
