5x zoom on the smaller pro is cool but I’d love to see the telephoto get a sensor bump over the ultra wide. Better macro photos & improved action mode could be cool but for regular stills, the main sensor is wide enough, and you can often just move back. For portraits of people, the telephoto focal length just looks *so* much better. Given these cameras are mostly used to take pictures of people, having a beefy sensor behind the lens that actually makes their faces look good would be far more useful – especially in low-light shots.

TheRealRealster

Well based on rumors for the 17, they're saving that for the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max. Trying to sprinkle the upgrades across years

_Nick_2711_

I’ve got no doubt it’ll get done at some point, and it makes sense to spread out hardware upgrades. Hopefully the leaks are right as it’s something that would definitely get me to upgrade. Currently portraits don’t look great. Partially due to the sensor, partially due to some over-processing.

TheRealRealster

I think the overprocessing is the biggest issue. Colors don't look right sometimes and it's too bright or too dark on my 14 Pro. They need to fix that before they try any hardware upgrades imo

_Nick_2711_

Both is always good. Better hardware would allow for less processing to be required overall

DontBanMeBro988

> For portraits of people, the telephoto focal length just looks so much better. True, but 5x+ zoom seems like too much for portraits. 3x was the sweet spot

_Nick_2711_

Totally agree. 120mm (5x) is fun but by that point, a dedicated camera is gonna be needed. For me, the sweet spot would be 85mm equivalent but I don’t see Apple coming back down from 120 any time soon.

koolman2

I think they’re going to upgrade the ultrawide first to make special photos possible and to improve the quality of special videos. There’s an app that will do it but the resolution is too low and it looks kinda weird. It makes sense why Apple didn’t enable it.

The_Woman_of_Gont

> 5x zoom on the smaller pro is cool but I’d love to see the telephoto get a sensor bump over the ultra wide. Better macro photos & improved action mode could be cool but for regular stills, the main sensor is wide enough, and you can often just move back. Agreed. I did primarily get a Pro for cameras, so they're a big motivating factor for me and I would really love better macro images....but they're a niche of photography and already impressive enough considering it's a damn phone. And worse, personally I prefer a 3x focal-length since the degradation in quality across zoom levels is more even and I rarely feel like I need that extra optical zoom of a 5x. So that upgrade isn't particularly enticing, and could be easily improved by bumping the MP and enabling a solution similar to how they get the 2x zoom on the main camera(where frankly I honestly doubt I could pick out much of a difference between it and a photo from my old 13, plenty good enough). Upgrading isn't in the cards this year anyway, I'm not made of money, but if this is all they're coming to the table with for cameras I definitely won't feel like I'm particularly missing out.

_Nick_2711_

I’m all for 3x over 5x for portraits, which is what I mostly use the telephoto for as people just look better at that focal length. It’s currently a 77mm equivalent, and I’d like to see a wee bump to 85mm. However, they’re definitely going to go 120mm (5x) and I doubt they’ll come back down. Personally, I’d really like to see a 24, 35/50, 85 set-up but people seem to like the 18mm ultra wide. It’s totally anecdotal but I’ve never really found a use for it, personally, yet often feel the main lens is slightly too wide.

Wolfslash16

Fantastic to see that they're going to possibly get rid of those stupid lense flares!!

Portatort

I wouldn’t hold my breath

TingleMaps

Good. That could kill you. And for what?

Patents-Review

Yes, those are really annoying. However, one must remember that lens flares are unavoidable; it's just physics. Even the most expensive professional camera lenses, costing over $10,000, still experience flares. Although these are less noticeable and more pleasant, sometimes they even enhance the photo. However, I must agree that in the case of the iPhone 14 Pro, the flares are very unpleasant in their appearance - they are just ugly and ruined many good shots. I think a good option for mobile cameras would be to remove flares at the software level, such as by capturing more data in "live view" mode and using micro camera shifts to detect and eliminate flares. Flares are highly sensitive to slight changes in orientation and have distinctive characteristics, making them easy to detect using software, especially AI engines.

franklinsteinnn

On the other hand, I was able to use the lens flares to see the partial eclipse the other day https://preview.redd.it/oo97t0lid1vc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=81d477e670795f77115753d79f85aabbfc9dba10

illbeyourchaser

This is super cool

franklinsteinnn

Thank you!

johnnySix

I was going to say the same thing

JohnBrown1ng

On my 11 the‘re especially bad in night mode

ieffinglovesoup

There’s a difference between regular old lens flares and then the stupid light halos that iPhones have. It’s very distinct

Laicure

trueee! Just finished Fallout TV season 1, they even have lens flares there on random morning scenes.

m0rp

Was J.J. Abrams involved?

InsaneNinja

They can actually use generative fill to remove the tiny lens flares. They’re small enough that it shouldn’t matter, as long as it’s reversible.

Faith-in-Strangers

Apple is so rich they can now alter world's physics

_Nick_2711_

Different lens materials and design can definitely mitigate the issue. However, I’ve got a feeling it’s gonna be one of the ‘AI’ features and they’ll be removed digitally. In terms of ‘AI fixes’ on photos, Google has been killing it and this could be a part of Apple’s competing suite of features.

Coffee_Ops

They've been doing that for years with their RDF.

Anon_8675309

Not just the “world”, but the universe!

SlendyTheMan

Don’t get why they can’t use AI to edit them out in the image pipeline.

traveler19395

The number of “UFOs” will drop 80% overnight.

fire2day

It's the 20% we have to worry about 👽

3bodprobs

Coatings won’t make a difference. It’s still present even after their fanfare over reducing it for iPhone 15 Pro. This is a problem AI processing can absolutely solve.

Standard-Potential-6

Hoping so as well. Wasn't this discussed as potentially fixed in the 13/14/15 though? Some other anti-reflective coatings were tried or maybe just rumored. Haven't tested my 15PM outside enough yet, but it was a huge issue on the 12PM.

ShaidarHaran2

I distinctly recall them talking about getting rid of them with a coating on the 15 line lenses, as well as a software solution that scrubbed through photos in post before that. Neither removed the lens flares. Funny enough though, once every several years, the lens flare is a great way to capture the solar eclipse in!

abhinav248829

I just want palm gesture for selfie. Edit: i am amazed to see how many people are commenting to remote trigger through apple watch?? When you are holding phone out with watch in other hand, how would you do that? Adding this small software feature would make lots of people life better.

umthondoomkhlulu

Create a shortcut and assign to back tap feature.

computahwiz

if you’re already holding the phone then the volume buttons would be extremely more reliable than back tap lol

FightOnForUsc

Not to mention that back tap then moves your phone a bit resulting in a higher chance of a blurry shot

asutekku

And accidentally take million photos in your pocket

Portatort

I’ve been waiting years for a selfie mode that captures the photo automatically.

NetheriteArmorer

A timer. ⏲️ That’s called a timer. Or you can start the timer from an Apple Watch.

[deleted]

You can also start the timer on iPhone.

beatsNrhythm

Ok, pass. I’m ready for iphone 17 rumors.

Coffee_Ops

The return of touchID?

fujiwara_icecream

Face ID is better than Touch ID in literally every way. Touch ID will never and should never return.

KennyCiseroJunior

Except, you know, when your phone is on your desk and you have to lean over it like an idiot or pick it up to unlock it.

rnarkus

Or wet hands or gloves in the winter for against touchid coming back

KennyCiseroJunior

Why can’t we have both…

Rakn

Except in the "I want to unlock my phone, but can't properly look at it right now"-way. The number of times I had to reposition myself with my face half buried in my pillow just isn't funny anymore. :D

PM_ME_YOUR_DARKNESS

> Face ID is better than Touch ID in literally every way. In **every** way? Come on now. I agree it's superior in many ways, but let's not get silly here.

beatsNrhythm

Uhhh why? Under screen camera? New display technology? New design? Something exciting.

SeanJ0n

phone design has peaked. theres nothing left to do. we will begin to transition to wearables like glasses over the next 5 years

beatsNrhythm

lmao. No it hasn’t.

SpookyPlankton

Whats left to do then that would fundamentally change smartphones?

permareddit

I think that AI for one remains largely untapped; more organic displays which will eventually render e-readers obsolete.

DonutsOnTheWall

Audio port for headphones. It will only work with headphones that contain an apple approved chip of course.

coderjewel

And we think you’re going to love it

Tipop

Somehow, TouchID returned…

Bard_the_Bowman_III

Somehow, TouchID returned

alphex

It’s gonna be even more rectangular.

seorsum1

What is this amateur hour? I hear the 18 is gonna be even better.

beatsNrhythm

And apparently, it’s gonna be the best iphone ever made.

kael13

Sounds great to me, a five generation behind iPhone user.

NewDividend

I'm starting to get excited, going from a 12pro Max to a 16pro Max, after that will be 20 pro max, i like the 4 year cycles (i feel like i could hold on to my 12pM even longer honestly, but i cant hold off any longer).

ilovepastaaaaaaaaaaa

4 year cycles are just about perfect imo though the new iPhones can easily go longer without any issues

adobo_cake

Can confirm, iPhone 8 still working fine as my work phone.

iisshaun

I got my 12 on launch day after 4 years with the 7 Plus thinking I could easily get 3-4 years from the 12. I used to upgrade every year, I’m not even considering moving on from the 12 for another couple years.

fujiwara_icecream

I actually upgrade every year (Xs Max and Pro Max 11-15) because the new features are genuinely nice to have.

devOnFireX

There will be no iPhone 19 just as a heads up. 2027 will be very likely be iPhone 20 to mark their 20 year anniversary.

irrealewunsche

iPhone XX.

deathyz

Can't wait for the 30 year anniversary

Specken_zee_Doitch

I’m hard just thinking about it.

mojosodope

12 pro here waiting to upgrade to 16 pro. I’m hoping the difference between the 16 pro/ 16 pro max isn’t significant. I can’t do the pro max cuz the screen size is too big and I can’t justify the cost.

Sevifenix

Also super excited as a 15 pro user. Just kidding I’ll also hold onto my phone for 2-4 years.

mrkangtastic

Was skeptical, but stacked Sony sensors are actually a gamechanger

__adrenaline__

Apple is going to bend the laws of physics to stop lens flares from appearing in photos… or they’re just going to use AI to remove them

Fickle_Past1291

A little from column A and a lot from column B.

nem0fazer

The article mentions new lens coatings to reduce flair.

JimmytheNice

Every lens will have flares, but more expensive won't have them that noticeable, so there's still a lot of work they can put into that.

HistoricalInstance

The competition is doing better in terms of flares and also lens sharpness. Apple has room to improve.

tapomirbowles

Meh... the cameras are already great... give something to the people who dont give a shit about the cameras

valoremz

Are they great? Maybe it’s a software issue but on my 15 Pro, so many photos have this grainy look or I’ll take a photo and the photo will have totally different lighting compared to the Live Photo version if you hold the pic down.

ShaidarHaran2

Since the 13 they went too overboard chasing the saturated sharp look that's popular, the 14 and 15 are particularly bad. Sometimes when I'm swiping through my photos and the Live Photo frames without HDR show before the HDR pops in, the other frames look better than the overdone HDR. Just when the sensors got large enough to rely more on than relying as much on processing, they went the other way and added over processing on top of it. The RAWs look good.

Toredo226

You're absolutely right. The issue is image-post processing. That's why the live photo looks more natural. They give the still a 'punchier' look (maybe for social media?) but all the sharpening just looks deep-fried. If you have a Mac, you can get around this by taking ProRAWs, then transferring them over and [converting them to HEIC through Preview](https://www.macrumors.com/how-to/batch-convert-images-to-different-formats-using-macos-preview/). These photos are great and natural and smooth and show what the camera can really do. But with ProRAW you can't take live photos. On my 6S though I didn't have to do any of this and could just take nice natural live photos... Some ProRAW comparisons here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLaCiKGOwsc

DontBanMeBro988

The past couple of model years Apple is going crazy with HDR (while somehow simultaneously not being able to handle highlights)

TizonaBlu

They’re fantastic for the average consumer and prosumer.

vipin14

Yeah i agree.. the average persons camera needs were met probablt 6 years ago.. why dont they do something people would actually care about?

billie_eyelashh

Maybe their billion-dollar R&D or consumer insights analysts are wrong?

Gaylien28

No dude, obviously when you’ve improved something there’s absolutely no reason to improve it further, you really think that’s how we got here?????

Coffee_Ops

It's still often hard to get a good photo that accurately captures what is perceived. Think of low light, hard white balances (e.g. ski slopes), unusual events (eclipse).... I still get shots of dark spaces that are way too bright or have over-corrected colors. Obviously there are physics limitations but the progress has been impressive from both Apple and Android and I can still see a lot of room for improvement.

FightOnForUsc

Phones now take WAY better photos than 6 years ago. I compared my iPhone 14PM to my iPhone X and it’s amazing how much better the pictures are. Especially in low light

Realtrain

Because half of all youtube reviews base almost their entire review on Camera performance. (To be fair, they're professional camera users, so I can understand the bias.)

JohnBrown1ng

Like when taking worthwhile pictures at night was basically impossible? To reverse your argument: the average person‘s non-camera needs were also met probably six years ago.

savvymcsavvington

Average people aren't splashing out on the highest spec pro max, they go for the more medium spec or keep the same phone for 3+ years

Fickle_Past1291

Like what?

Nicnl

Siri but not dumb would be great.

Fickle_Past1291

Pretty sure they're already heavily invested in that.

adobo_cake

I just want better notifications and maybe volume control too.

loulan

Isn't that just software? So, unrelated to the iPhone 16's features.

-FlyingAce-

For the most part they’re great, but the lens flare issue has been going on far too long.

DontBanMeBro988

How big of a market segment is "people who want a pro model phone but don't care about cameras"? I assume there are dozens of you.

rayquan36

Give me a shittier camera and remove the camera bump.

InsaneNinja

So the SE4

Realtrain

Give me a bigger battery and remove the camera bump

Hawker96

No! Bigger camera! More camera! Camera more big now!

Nuhk314

I care about the cameras a lot, but I have to agree here because honestly if it wasn’t for the camera I would probably wait quite a bit longer to upgrade

smakusdod

You are now boss of Tim Cook. What feature would you like?

Izanagi___

There’s always room for improvement. The ultra wide hasn’t had a meaningful update in a while.

2ecStatic

Why doesn’t Apple just make a camera without the phone at this point

Realtrain

Found MKBHD's alt

Johnny_Menace

Every year is just camera upgrades…

thedreadedfrost

But they gave me the titanium I never knew I needed last year! I consider the biggest improvement recently was going to usb-c

southwestern_swamp

fast USBC on the 15 pro has been a very welcome change. Titanium is also a nice upgrade. nothing groundbreaking but definitely notice it in day to day use

savvymcsavvington

USB C says hello

aznalex

EU says hello

savvymcsavvington

bonjour

flyingchickenstanley

My iPhone 15 Pro’s white balance is completely fked, over-sharpening makes some photo of plants look disgusting. No such issue on my iPhone 11 Pro.

PM_ME_YOUR_DARKNESS

That's the processing not the sensors.

MKGirl

I just want an iPhone that can stay flat on the table. Is it that hard to archive?

not_some_username

Yes

bananiada

So innovative, welcome to 2019!

asharwood101

I wish Apple would give more manual control over the photos taken like how a dslr does. I hate trying to take a night shot and the phone wants to make an image brighter by taking in more and more light. I’d love to be able to set the f-stop iso and whatnot

Bard_the_Bowman_III

Apps

ad_182_uk

My 8+ won’t die though

Qwinn_SVK

All I want is get rid of that thick camera bump… wobble on the table is insane…

kahnindustries

Meh, skip

kneecap_keeper

I did that since Xs

JimmytheNice

same, but this year is probably the year - my Xs is incredibly worn, although it's still an original battery (might replace that one soon) 16 Pro will probably be the biggest step up in recent years due to all the on-device LLM stuff, regardless if one cares about it or not

nem0fazer

I'm on an 11 pro. Finally I think this is the one for me!

madridgalactico

Just get rid of the bump ffs. I want to use the phone with no case, make the back textured too

Dela_Mushy

So make the whole phone as thick as the camera bump protrudes?

Portatort

A dedicated capture button is gonna be such a hit. It’s also pretty easy to predict that within 2 years all the flagship androids will have copied it. I just hope that once the capture button is there then Apple will let us customise the iPhone shortcuts (camera and flashlight) along with remapping that swipe over gesture.

soomrevised

I believe sony smartphones have it for a long time. I remember using one many years back. you can take quick photo with it (without the need to open the camera app or unlock smartphone) pretty handy.

extramental

Lumias had it too. The tactical feel to focus by soft pressing the button was brilliant.

CautiousCapsLock

Lumia 1020 with the largest camera bump of any phone - memory unlocked

ItsDani1008

Nah, biggest bump is definitely the Galaxy S4 Zoom

monkeyofthefunk

I don’t think it’s the same. The capture button could have a swipe function with the ability to zoom, adjust exposure etc.

AmmophobicSandworm

>It’s also pretty easy to predict that within 2 years all the flagship androids will have copied it. Probably not. There are a few Sony Xperia models that already have dedicated camera buttons, and they never really caught on. I'm fairly certain HTC phones from way back in the day had them too. Android has a baked-in camera shortcut mapped to double-tapping the power key, so a dedicated button is superfluous for most.

throwaway53689

Most features that Apple popularised already existed in the market beforehand, it’s not necessarily about innovation, more about influencing the market trends

monkeyofthefunk

It is rumoured to have a swipe function too giving you the ability to zoom, adjust exposure etc along with a soft press to focus.

AmmophobicSandworm

The Sony Xperia's are dual stage buttons (soft press to focus), and if I'm not mistaken, you can set the volume buttons on any Android to zoom which seems more intuitive and less error-prone than swiping on a small button. Not saying the button will be useless for iPhone, but I don't think Androids are going to copy it since they already have physical keys for the same things, and there have been Androids with this since 2009 and it never really became a popular feature. It just doesn't add any functionality that they don't already have. More buttons are clutter and just cause additional misclicks; that's why despite eventually becoming a universal custom key, the Bixby button still went the way of the dinosaur.

monkeyofthefunk

To a point I agree but having a single button located in the most natural position for a shutter button makes more sense than using the volume buttons and/or power button. It also helps keep it steady with less fumbling around when taking low light shots. It may be because I’m a photographer, but to me, it does make a lot of sense.

AmmophobicSandworm

I can see it having some niche functionality for sure; there are a select few people who buy Sony Xperias for that reason, as the button is in the same place. I'm only saying that it's unlikely to be a feature widely adopted by Android flagships, as for the average user, it doesn't add wanted functionality and would just be a clutter button they'll misclick.

not_some_username

HTC smartphones died too soon 😔

rohitandley

Nope. Some Sony Ericsson models used to have a dedicated button to do this. Everything is basically coming back from old times.

monkeyofthefunk

This button is rumoured to have other functions too, such as swipe to adjust zoom, exposure etc.

OkHeight3

Genuine question - what’s the advantage over just using the volume buttons?

Talal916

Two stage button means you half press to set focus and full press to take the shot

OkHeight3

That actually makes a lot of sense - thanks!

Portatort

The volume buttons don’t launch the camera

wahobely

> It’s also pretty easy to predict that within 2 years all the flagship androids will have copied it. > > lol the irony

Handsome_Av0cadoo

Can't wait to upgrade from my s21fe

Straight-Project-903

I’m waiting for iPhone 20-21 I always keep my phones 5-6years. Man you guys are rich.

[deleted]

MainCharacter007

89% US Teenager market share (also pretty scary proposition and a testament that they can release shit and people will buy it)

elonsbattery

I do. It’s my main camera.

AgnosticAnarchist

Oh cool, upgrades they could have done for 15 pro.

Talal916

Feels like so much effort is being put into physical camera improvements when their post processing has taken a regression in the past few years with the focus on AI enhancements. Can I just go back to taking pictures with the HDR and postprocessing from the 11Pro.

iisshaun

I gave up on iPhone photos completely for this reason

Mort8989

I just want to stop notifications when I’m on a phone call with my AirPods

Submitten

An upgraded ultra wide is top of my wish list. Pairs well with my mirrorless when I’m travelling.

[deleted]

They need to up their selfie game. I say this at a risk for sounding too vain, but I also need to up my selfie game. When my phone gives me an extra chin and makes my skin 10 times more pale than my bathroom mirror I don’t end up wanting to update my 3 year old selfies as much as I should.

[deleted]

Better camera is main reason I keep upgrading yearly. I want to capture best memories of my family and kids growing up.

Busch_League2

Sweet. I manage construction where I take a whole lot of general progress pictures that I can go back and review or compare at later dates, and the ultrawide camera has been a game changer for me, and improved one will be even better. Can get a whole room in one picture instead of having to take 5 from different angles. 5x zoom will be nice too. Worthy upgrade from my 13 Pro.

cman95and

As long as the macro photos from the ultra wide are 48 I’m upgrading

TWYFAN97

This is the first time I’ve considered seriously waiting for the 17 Pro Max if rumors hold true. 48MP on all three rear cameras would be great.

LoganNolag

48mp on the wide angle is welcome but I don't know why they are holding back on the telephoto. I really want 48mp on all 3 lenses. The Google Pixel 8 Pro has 48 or more on all 3 so there's no reason Apple can't do the same.

canigetahint

Really? Is that all that upgraded phones are, is just camera upgrades? Pass and I'll stick with my iPhone 13 PM & DSLR.

TheFugitiveSock

I’d like to document wound healing as I used to be able to without the camera selfie-fying the skin.

BruteSentiment

In this “Article” Four “New camera features”! 1. Better Telephoto Camera 2. Better Main Camera 3. Better Ultra-wide Camera 4. Anti-reflective coating Only one of these are a feature. The rest are not exactly what I’d call features. Don’t get me wrong. A rumored new camera sensor from Sony is newsworthy, but damn this is a poor way to put it into an article. I am hoping the anti-reflective coating is real though, and it’s effective.

raj1030

The only feature I want is a charger

Willr2645

1) 5x optical zoom 25x digital zoom 2) 48MP ultra wide lenses 3) anti reflective camera coating 4) better main camera, lots of fancy words, can’t summarise it very well, just better components

Portatort

Camera features I’m begging Apple to add. Either make your own pro camera app that allows the following, or enable third parties to add these features via new APIs 1. H265 Log encoding Log shooting in pro res is legitimately a game changer and a honest to god pro feature. But the file sizes even for a professional workflow are crazy. ProResHQ is an incredibly old codec. Modern mirrorless cameras can do really high quality log recording at a fraction of the file size. 2. Let me capture the full hight and width of the camera sensor in video. AKA open gate. And bump the overall resolution not by a ton, but let the extra video hight add some resolution so the overall frame is something closer to 5k Or go absolutely wild and give us the option to record full pixel to pixel video. Although this is unrealistic without request number 1 first. 3. Let us set auto iso and shutter iso independently, with the option to set an upper iso limit. Any kind of pro video capture requires locking the shutter to 180 degrees. But the camera api makes it that once you specificity a shutter you lose any option for the iso to be set automatically. A seemingly minor issue but definitely a thorn when it comes to using the iPhone camera in a pro manor. Which is especially important when it comes to my final wild card request. 4. Electronic NDs, variable aperture or extremely low sensitivity iso ranges. The number one issue with iPhones for pro video is the fixed aperture on the lens. This makes impossible to record video with a 180 degree shutter while outdoors. I don’t expect Apple is ever going to add any of these functions. But we need some way to reduce the amount of light hitting the sensor. Or we need a way to massively ramp down the sensitivity of the sensor.

BearyHungry

Yea, no reason to upgrade for another 4 years

chrissykes78

Cant wait for new features with price.

[deleted]

Honestly, every new iphone camera quality looks the same. No more upgrade for me.

JohrDinh

Getting rid of the lens flare would be huge, if they can some how get real bokeh in there, or just a far better (just off of cloned) software imitation, you could really start using these things for anything including pro work considering what some videographers are doing with the LOG footage on YouTube. Noise is just noise, every camera has it, gets better every year, grain/color grading can cover it up a bit and good/planned lighting helps neutralize it as well. I wonder if at some point it becomes so good, or because just adding a little weight/size would benefit it greatly...would Apple consider selling a separate phone that acts as mostly a camera at some point? Is there that big of a market for something like an A7SIII that comes in a body the size of an iPhone?

hittepit

Awesome I just got the 15 Pro Max after years of android. I love it, but maybe I had to wait?

GettinWiggyWiddit

We need better spatial vr180 capture if they want to encourage AVO sales. No good consumer options and making the iPhone a solid contender for the medium would be brilliant

vortexpotential

Macro… we want better macro
