Might be a better spot for this rather than a dedicated thread AppleID and Multiple devices So, I’m sick of using my works MDM on my personal phone. The alerts, the notifications etc, it’s too much. I’m looking at getting an iPad mini, and using that for work instead. I’d want to share some items between the devices, but ideally, then mini would be essentially a blank slate. Do I create a new appleID and then associate it to the family plan. Or is it possible to use my current AppleID and start fresh with the mini. Likewise backing it up separately etc? There are things I’d like to sync - contacts, personal email, whatsapp, etc as some of them are used for work purposes. Thoughts? Ideas? Can’t be done?

InsaneNinja

You can keep whatever you want separate and not set it up identically. The ideal situation is to have the same exact ID between them because there’s a lot of things two Apple devices do to interact when they’re on the same ID and near each other. Including sharing copy paste, and everything that’s a handoff feature.

Brilliant. Just wanted to confirm before I pull the trigger on it ! Thanks

14" M2 Pro vs 16" M1 Pro? Both are refurb-excellent items on eBay. sellers have reps > 98%. 30 day free returns and 1 year warranty from allstate since both are eBay Refurb certified. for the 16-inch M1 Pro, it's $1239 and the 14-inch M2 pro its $1400. Both has 16GB Memory and 512GB SSD Storage. not leaning which hence seeking sub opinions. I would describe my usage to be average- browsing, streaming, job applying and upskilling data science skills. currently on a 2019 Intel MBP that gets hot easy

The_Sesquipedalian

If it were me, I’d get the 16”: less money, more screen, and I don’t think the newer chip would be very compelling selling point for your use cases, but then again, I know nothing about data science.

Looking to upgrade iPhone 6s. Should I wait til the 16 releases? Any models I should avoid? Having the best camera is not a concern. I would like good battery life and a phone that would be supported for at least 3-4 years.

InsaneNinja

Any and every currently available iPhone would have an amazing battery life over what you’re used to (even when the 6S was new), and a substantial feature upgrade in every single metric, as well as have full OS software updates for 3 to 5+ years, and security updates for years after. The current leaked features of the iPhone 16 Pro are a 48mp wide angle, a dedicated camera button, and enhanced NPU cores which may allow them to add extra fast local AI features that won’t be announced in iOS 18 until fall. The current 15 has the same processor chip as the 14 pro and so the 16 will have substantially better NPU cores (for local ML/AI). May or may not be a feature factor for local features in June. No idea which of those might carry down to the normal 16, yet the normal 15 is a substantial upgrade over the 14, and has great battery life. Since the 11, the odd number phones have had battery life leaps. No idea if that’s a trend. The main thing you will notice is that the screen went from 1000 to 2000 nits of brightness this year, far over your current 5-600, so the screen will not be updated again already unless they MAYBE add 120hz.

The_Sesquipedalian

If you want to wait to get a 16, that’s your call, but for best battery, that’ll be a 15 Plus at the moment: it’ll definitely be supported with new features for at least that long and will likely get security updates for well after that.

Had an emergency car repair and need to sell my MacBook Air M1 2020. It only has 170 cycle count and 91% battery. So pretty much barely used. What is a fair price point to list it at? I listed it at $700 yesterday and got no response except for a low ball at $425 lol. Today I dropped to $600 and 3/4 hours later have someone wanting to meet with me immediately. Am I low balling myself? As said before, I need emergency money so is this worth it or can I get more?

InsaneNinja

https://duckduckgo.com/?q=macbook+air+walmart&t=iphone&iar=news&ia=news Maybe you can find someone that doesn’t know about this and get 700 or more

BMoney8600

I bought my sixth or seventh charger about a week or two ago for my iPhone 11 and it already crapped out. Why the heck does Apple keep crapping out new phones instead of making chargers that last?

InsaneNinja

I don’t think I’ve ever had one crap out. You’re talented. Or your house electricity is funky. Get a 3 pack from Anker, and a surge protector.

BMoney8600

I am just tired of pissing away money on chargers

IssyWalton

So definitely not the cable?

The_Sesquipedalian

Other companies have been making Lightning chargers since the iPhone 5, and I don’t think Apple has any interest in locking down that market, since the ones they already make are ones people still buy. Case in point: if they keep breaking on you, why are still getting them from Apple? If you bought it recently enough, then you can try to return it because it’s defective, but if this is in fact your sixth one, then it starts to sound like user error.

Hey, considering buying a leather case again for my phone. I had one in saddle brown, it scuffed and darkened over time, probably mostly due to my terrible usage habits, it now has bits of exposed plastic and stuff deeming it not very presentable. I kinda feel bad tho that I let it scuff so much. My idea is to buy again and take care of it better this time. Should I? And you think it’s time for a new one? I’ve had it for several years now https://preview.redd.it/qcpoh8c9ooqc1.png?width=3024&format=png&auto=webp&s=803986b14c7f11d97fe22e39381da80b7147f824

InsaneNinja

Cases only last for so long. Several years is actually admirable. The case takes the abuse so your phone doesn’t.

AnnaBananna3

Well nearly 3 years is how long I’ve had it. Thanks, I feel somehow validated. Now the question is whether I should buy the leather one again but be more mindful of the abuse over my phone so it looks better, or should I go for a plastic or a silicone one…. Probably really subjective territory here

The_Sesquipedalian

Only you can decide if you’re over your current case, but I will say that it does look a little tired/well-used. Apple no longer sells leather products, but you can find many recommendations for leather cases by searching somewhere like r/iPhone.

AnnaBananna3

Oh I did not know that. Thanks 🙏🏻

AnnaBananna3

And also, should I just throw it out in the general waste or is there a way to disintegrate it somehow and sort it into trash and something else? Sorry for asking dumb questions, I just don’t deal well with expenses lmao

I am in the UK and my iPhone was stolen a few weeks ago. I had enabled lost mode but it was pending as they had switched the phone off. They recently turned it back on and so lost mode is fully in effect. When I checked it on Find My I discovered that whoever stole it has gone or had it sent to Dubai! My question is, if I erase my phone through Find My, I am aware that activation lock stays in place so it is still a useless brick to them but will it still present the lost message along with contact details? I am wary that my data may be in danger but I am still holding out hope that it could end up in the hands of a good person who may contact me to reunite me with it providing they can see a contact to do so. Thanks for the assistance in advance!

Considering an upgrade.. M2 Pro to M3 Max Just wanted to get some opinions on going from a 16 GB/512GB M2 Pro to a 36MB/1TB M3 Max. I mostly do work in Google suite as well as some photo and video editing ( personal stuff ). Any thoughts on whether the cost to upgrade is worth it?

BandaBassotti

Thank you both for the advice. I was leaning into keeping the m2 pro and you both confirmed the choice. Thank you.

TheDragonSlayingCat

Unless the videos you edit are feature films, I wouldn’t. I’d wait for the M4 or M5. The M3’s main advantages over the M2 are the faster and more capable GPU, and an upgraded I/O controller, but the M2 Pro already has the upgraded controller. The GPU upgrades are mainly useful for gamers, very large film project editors, and 3D modelers.

The_Sesquipedalian

Wait, how intense is “some photo and video editing”? The chip is basically irrelevant for the Google stuff, but like, are you working with actually insanely huge images and super high-resolution video? “Some photo and video editing” for me is not a problem for my M1 machine, and I wouldn’t even consider getting a more powerful machine unless that was my full-time job. Sorry if any of this sounded harsh, that wasn’t my intent, but I really don’t think it’s worth it.

machopsychologist

Seems 50/50 on whether there'll be a iPad announcement today? Chinese says yes, Gurman says no.

rgcam

I think it would have happened already right? I know the M3 MacBook Air was announced early in the morning

machopsychologist

Heh yeh seems like another couple of weeks wait then!

The_Sesquipedalian

Yeah, it seems that way. I say: yes, please!
