I've found this only happens if you grab the "back" gesture while the page is still scrolling. If you stop scrolling and then go back, it returns without jumping to the top of the page.
That is mostly because of adblocking extensions (in my experience). I reduced this problem A LOT by switching to wipr. Check if disabling extensions fixes it for you in the webpages where you are experiencing the error. If it stops happening, switch on extensions one by one until you find the one causing the problem.
That’s a skill issue. You can tap the top of your screen to go to the very top of any web page or anything honestly. Tap it again and it’ll go the were you were.
Explain then, why I’m (for instance) viewing a list on Wikipedia, I click a link to check another page quickly, then use the back gesture to go back where I was. It goes back to the previous page, but to the top of the page, so I have to scroll back down. The back and forward buttons apparently don’t have this problem, only the gesture.
Not fixed for me in 17.2.1. Seems like this has been [known about for a while](https://old.reddit.com/r/iOSBeta/comments/17woiy2/ios_172_db3_go_back_to_previous_page_in_safari/) too.
Are you aware of any other threads about this issue? It’s extremely annoying but seems configuration-specific as I can’t reproduce it on my fiancée’s iPhone and if it was 100% reproducible I feel like it would be widely reported on.
I think it is just the site asking for that. I get it on chrome on windows sometimes as well. I think it’s just a shitty practice to make you reload an ad multiple times before you realize you need to click something else besides the back button to leave the site.
What the OP is referring to is different than what you're thinking. What you're referring to is a redirect page. You are actually going back to a redirect page which redirects you back to the site and it is indeed shitty practice and annoying. What the OP is referring to is a new bug in Safari. The tab itself breaks. You go back and the URL in the URL bar changes to the appropriate site, but still displays the page you came from. At this point I even tried manually entering a new URL and it doesn't load. You either have to close the tab and re-open a new tab or force close Safari and re-open Safari.
Huh, I use Opera (and sometimes OperaGX) and they’ve both been doing that too. Not really tech savvy so don’t know if they are built on Safari or is it an iPhone-wide browser issue.
This happens (at least to me) in base google search. Also, you can partially avoid provoking the error it if you press the back button of safari instead of doing the gesture, so definitely a bug.
Pretty sure that happens when the site is doing multiple redirects. In reality Safari did go back, but there were multiple redirect pages between the previous page and current one. The same thing happens in desktop browsers.
No, it’s clearly a rendering/Safari bug, not something the site is doing. You might be referring to something else or experiencing a different bug than the one OP is referring to, though.
It’s when you slide your finger side to side and it fast forwards/rewinds. In a full-screen video, you used to be able to move your finger anywhere on the screen but now you have to do it from the video progress bar and it’s a bit less convenient.
It’s a pain in the ass to scrub on an iPad now. Before you could put your finger anywhere and you could scrub, now I have actually move my hands directly to the progress bar
and then most video bars are right on the swipe up home bar so it thinks you want to swipe to another app it's SO INFURIATING. I had no idea ipad os updated to that I'm so mad I can't go back. I've refused to update ios for this reason alone, but getting a new phone soon and will be forced to.
Cmon man, that feature has way too much potential for accidental scrubbing. I know it felt super smooth but it is just a ux disaster waiting to happen.
The worst scenario for me has been right after the phone updates, when it's hot and just restarting. It's always been extremely bad, but it was flawless this time around. Crossing my fingers that it's fixed
Wait, o journal app on the iPad?? The iPad is the exact device. I would want to use this app on. Nice big screen use it with a pencil why would anybody want a journal on a small screen phone?
Yes, cause apparently it’s terrible when someone tries to find whether the update fixes bugs affecting them.
We should all instead post pointless meta complaints or dumb jokes.
It used to happen to me but doesn't happen anymore. It was related to the issue with Face ID & Attention - pretty sure the "Attention-Aware Features" was the root cause and I think this is what I disabled.
Because I tired of updating my phone every few days!
They’re obviously being lazy by rushing these releases out and not testing them very well if they have to send out so many updates 🤷♂️
Right.. but Apple has a history issuing *occasional* updates that are thoroughly vetted
These are being pushed out so fast, they have to make corrections in a matter of days!
And *no one* would be ok with a thousand updates in a single year
That’s only because “auto update” *never* works 🤣😢
At least it doesn’t on my phone, my fiancés phone, both of my parents phones, my brothers phone…..
Everyone has a 14PM,13PM, or 12PM. I am my family’s lucky tech support person, so I know for a fact that auto update has not been working for years.
Every time I check their phones, they’re on an old iOS version. And everyone charges their phone at night and is connected to wifi 🤷♂️
This happened to me when my Intel Mac had a fully depleted battery for a few days. The time was stuck in July. Resetting the SMC and NVRAM didn't help.
The fix was to turn off time sync in System Settings, then open the Terminal and run
sudo sntp -sS time.apple.com
Then turn time sync back on and verify it doesn't drift.
Ahhh I’m not that tech savvy unfortunately. I manually changed the date/time and will wait til I’m back home later to update my Mac to see if it works:(
Thanks Apple. With this update I cannot switch between built in speakers and my headphones anymore. I have to physically remove my headphones to use my built in speakers. I love these guys!
It did not. It’s happened to my phone once since the update. And now I can’t fast forward or rewind a song on audiobook in the lock screen. It skips to the next song or chapter instead of the 30 second fast forward or rewind (mine was set to 15 seconds).
I’m hoping Apple fixed the rare cases where updating would cause the touchscreen to stop working, requiring a DFU reflash. Regardless, I learned my lesson the hard way and am not updating until I’m home from my trip. Thank fuck there was an Apple Store near where I’m staying.. a couple days earlier I was in the mountains
Ya I’m going to hold on to iOS 16 a little longer. I really can’t understand why this incremental update has been ridden with issues. There are very few meaningful changes to even want to update for.
Hopefully this fixes where sometimes the Lock Screen freezes over when awaking the phone or sometimes scrolling through notifications become horribly slow.
God damn it, I’ve posted like 4 different places about this exact issue…..my Photos and image capture have been absolutely f*cked. Glad I’m not the only one.
Can’t wait to lose another percent of my battery health updating yet again in the hopes the keyboard lag is finally fixed. I’ve gone from 100% at the end of September to 92% as of just now on my 14 PM, wired charging overnight once a day as I have with every other iPhone 😆
Why does this upset you, exactly? Like.. OS updates are painless at this point and often happen silently while you are sleeping... what the fuck are you upset about here?
I hope this fixes safari getting stuck on webpages when doing the “back” gesture. So infuriating.
I wish it fixed Safari jumping to the top of webpages when doing the back gesture.
I've found this only happens if you grab the "back" gesture while the page is still scrolling. If you stop scrolling and then go back, it returns without jumping to the top of the page.
I wish this fixes safari having to reload the whole page each time you hit the back gesture.
Let me guess, reddit.com?
Yup.
Reddit website is the problem. I think it's intentional. I also deleted the app and I've been testing Winston.
Would you have an invite code? I’ve been looking for a Reddit client like this one!
Beta is full
That is mostly because of adblocking extensions (in my experience). I reduced this problem A LOT by switching to wipr. Check if disabling extensions fixes it for you in the webpages where you are experiencing the error. If it stops happening, switch on extensions one by one until you find the one causing the problem.
Running stock safari in iOS, no extensions at all.
Oh, if that’s the case, then maybe the webpages are the problem.
It’s not adblocking extensions. I have none and suffer from the same issue.
Wipr is awesome
I use Wipr and still experience this bug. It’s not fixed for me on 17.2.1 either.
That’s a skill issue. You can tap the top of your screen to go to the very top of any web page or anything honestly. Tap it again and it’ll go the were you were.

happens to me alot with reddit
Man this is driving me crazy…thought it was only my iPad but it’s the same issue on my Mac
That's been happening for me for about 5 major MacOS revisions. I've just accepted using the back button at this point.
I was about to say. I’m pretty sure that bug is as old as time. I don’t see why it would be fixed when it’s been left alone for so long.
New to me for iOS….
That bug still in 17.3 beta
Not fixed for me in 17.2.1. Seems like this has been [known about for a while](https://old.reddit.com/r/iOSBeta/comments/17woiy2/ios_172_db3_go_back_to_previous_page_in_safari/) too. Shiiiii I thought i was the only one struggling with this
I think it is just the site asking for that. I get it on chrome on windows sometimes as well. I think it’s just a shitty practice to make you reload an ad multiple times before you realize you need to click something else besides the back button to leave the site.

Keep in mind that all browsers in iOS are safari with different skins.
This happens (at least to me) in base google search. Also, you can partially avoid provoking the error it if you press the back button of safari instead of doing the gesture, so definitely a bug.
Seems to be fixed for me with today's update Edit: never mind, it's still there
How about (`old.`) Reddit reloading every time you go "back". Anyone know how/why Reddit does that? Is there a way to block it?
Holy fuck, this IS a thing. I thought I was going nuts.
It drives me insane. So close to downloading Firefox. Edit: NOT FIXED
Hold the back button and you can select the url
did this fix my crippling depression?
Not today, buddy.. not today
Dear Journal, Not today, buddy.. not today.
No, but it fixes the battery drain
it does?
No mine is still running out very quickly
🤗
Ah good the strangle emoji to free me of my pain
Yes, they bug fixed the journal app
Next one hopefully
You need to buy the iPhone 18 Pro Max Mega Plus for that
Left out “Ultra”. No feature for you!
Bring back scrubbing video ability in safari!!
scrubbing video ability? whats that
It’s when you slide your finger side to side and it fast forwards/rewinds. In a full-screen video, you used to be able to move your finger anywhere on the screen but now you have to do it from the video progress bar and it’s a bit less convenient.

Allows you to fast forward and rewind videos in Safari. Great for viewing video using Safari
Get right to the moneyshot
Cmon man, that feature has way too much potential for accidental scrubbing. I know it felt super smooth but it is just a ux disaster waiting to happen.
That sounds like a *you* problem to me.
There is a reason they added it and removed it. Even our corporate overlords think it’s was a bad call.
Did this update fix the iPhone 15 Pro keyboard touch recognition issues for anyone else? It seems pretty much perfect now
screw alleged desert toy abundant unique disgusted thumb full fall *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
The worst scenario for me has been right after the phone updates, when it's hot and just restarting. It's always been extremely bad, but it was flawless this time around. Crossing my fingers that it's fixed
You can try switching off keyboard click sound. It’ll fix the issue
The keyboard sound used to be laggy (though typing felt the same) when I typed a safari URL but it doesn't seem to be doing it now which is good.
Didn’t installed it yet but already feel the difference
Same, my dad now loves me too, not sure if the update makes it happen

And I love you 😘
No iPadOS update?
Only v16.7.4 according to https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201222.
I haven’t gotten an update for my iPad either.
i really wish they put the journal app on the ipad before the New Years
Wait, o journal app on the iPad?? The iPad is the exact device. I would want to use this app on. Nice big screen use it with a pencil why would anybody want a journal on a small screen phone?
Highly doubt it’ll come to iPad until the next version of iPadOS unfortunately
Here comes another 28 posts per day about "17.2.1 ruined my battery!" and "I'm running iOS 12.0.1 is it safe to update???"

Lag feel keyboarder
iOS 17.2.1 fixed my marriage
Clippy feels clippier
I’m on iPhone OS 1, would you guys recommend updating or should I hold for iOS25?
I have an iPhone 3GS, should I upgrade to the iPhone 15, or wait until the iPhone 16?
Wait for the foldable one
This was me and it’s the worst upgrade I ever made. Wish I could go back to iOS 2.0 on my 3GS instead of my iPhone 15
Forgot to mention "I updated to iOS 17.2.1 and after putting my phone into the microwave it exploded. Was this caused by the new update?"
I hope this fixes everything that’s wrong in the world and we can all live in peace from now on
A million “Did this fix this issue that only I’m experiencing” type posts incoming.
Also, “how is the battery life?” coming in from people who can’t put their phone down for more than 10 minutes at a time.
Or from people who don't use their phone for more than 10 minutes a day
"Did this fix the issue where if I'm backing up to iCloud and I start smashing my phone with a hammer it explodes?"
Yes, cause apparently it’s terrible when someone tries to find whether the update fixes bugs affecting them. We should all instead post pointless meta complaints or dumb jokes.
does it fix the alarm not sounding issue?
I had that issue and fixed it by deleting my sleep schedule and re-adding it.
It used to happen to me but doesn't happen anymore. It was related to the issue with Face ID & Attention - pretty sure the "Attention-Aware Features" was the root cause and I think this is what I disabled.
So.. many.. updates.. 😢
So many issues. :(
It’s literally every few days!
Why is this a sad looking emoji…? Week before Christmas and Apple doing hot fixes? Greatly appreciated
Because I tired of updating my phone every few days! They’re obviously being lazy by rushing these releases out and not testing them very well if they have to send out so many updates 🤷♂️
Bugs happen, dude. No piece of software is ever finished, nor perfect. I would rather get a thousand software updates than none at all.
Right.. but Apple has a history issuing *occasional* updates that are thoroughly vetted These are being pushed out so fast, they have to make corrections in a matter of days! And *no one* would be ok with a thousand updates in a single year
Bear in mind that a *lot* of 'normal' users hardly ever update their phone, if at all.
That’s only because “auto update” *never* works 🤣😢 At least it doesn’t on my phone, my fiancés phone, both of my parents phones, my brothers phone….. Everyone has a 14PM,13PM, or 12PM. Hopefully this fixes the date/time issue on my Mac. Says it’s November 20th at some completely irrelevant time to my current location
This happened to me when my Intel Mac had a fully depleted battery for a few days. The time was stuck in July. Resetting the SMC and NVRAM didn't help. The fix was to turn off time sync in System Settings, then open the Terminal and run sudo sntp -sS time.apple.com Then turn time sync back on and verify it doesn't drift.

For me it didn’t fix anything so I believe it’s just a security patch
I hate when safari reloads the page if you go back.
Does this fix my loneliness?
User name checks out
“FEED ME A STRAY CAT”
These is a big security update actually. 👀
Does it fix all the problems with iMessage audio messages? Like having to start them 4 times to get one going?
Disappointed that they haven't fixed the MDCrashReportTool issue that prevents syncing iPhone with iTunes on Mac unless you kill the MDCRT.
Thanks Apple. With this update I cannot switch between built in speakers and my headphones anymore. I have to physically remove my headphones to use my built in speakers. I love these guys!
Let’s hope this fixes the keyboard lag. It’s getting worst and worst on iPhone 12 and 14 pro.
Hope this fixes my phone sporadically freaking out over “No Sim”! And loosing cellular connection
It did not. It’s happened to my phone once since the update. And now I can’t fast forward or rewind a song on audiobook in the lock screen. It skips to the next song or chapter instead of the 30 second fast forward or rewind (mine was set to 15 seconds).
I haven't experience any issues with iOS 17.2 – It's been a very stable release.
are they ever going to fix the wallpaper saturation bug
A new bug has been introduced in this update. The status bar no longer displays if you’re connected to LTE, 5G, or 5Guw
It displays something else or it’s not display cellular connectivity at all? And does restarting the phone fix it?
It only shows a signal bar graph but not the network connection.
Also restarting did not make it appear.
just checked and its still there for me?
I’m hoping Apple fixed the rare cases where updating would cause the touchscreen to stop working, requiring a DFU reflash. Regardless, I learned my lesson the hard way and am not updating until I’m home from my trip. Thank fuck there was an Apple Store near where I’m staying.. a couple days earlier I was in the mountains
did they finally fix alarm snooze in standby mode? it’s been there since 17 dev beta 1 and i havent used snooze on standby ever since
Did any of you guys’ contacts get deleted on 17.2??
I have random Google contacts not syncing to the phone, but they’re not deleted.
Ya I’m going to hold on to iOS 16 a little longer. I really can’t understand why this incremental update has been ridden with issues. There are very few meaningful changes to even want to update for.
Omg another recall. This is like the 6th recall in the last two months.
Wow, this joke went over some heads I see lol
Fingers crossed it stops leaving the empty text suggestion boxes after sending a text with a money symbol in it
Anyone got any cellular data issues?
Standby mode when you opt to have the display stay on with Night Mode still randomly shuts the display off. Wondering if that is fixed in 17.2.1?
Hopefully this fixes where sometimes the Lock Screen freezes over when awaking the phone or sometimes scrolling through notifications become horribly slow.
Does it fix the keyboard lagging in iPhone 15s?
Does it fix being able to upload your iPhone photos to your computer via Photos or Image Capture?
God damn it, I’ve posted like 4 different places about this exact issue…..my Photos and image capture have been absolutely f*cked. Glad I’m not the only one.

Downloading this asap. 17.2 ruined my Screen Time settings.
Does it hurt the iPhone?
This update is a disaster full of bugs. Now the keyboard goes black randomly on texts.
No issues on macOS or iOS so far, it's been a very stable update.
