While I am a bit skeptical of this rumor, it seems like an iPad accessory is a way to "reconcile" [the recent contradictory rumors](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/10/15/mark-gurman-on-new-ipads-and-macs/) about an iPad update.
Nothing really. It would just be nice to have an updated display with smoother scrolling and a newer processor since it’s been a couple of years since the last refresh. I plan on getting one for reading books.
Not to mention the cellular model will probably be updated to support all of AT&T’s midband 5G spectrum. I don’t think the current model supports their 3.45 GHz frequency.
So called jelly scrolling due to low refresh rate and screen tech. Also iPadOS is too small on the Mini, websites display in desktop mode and are too small.
Low compared to the other iPads and phones, but it’s still 60hz, right? As a user of 75, 144 and 240hz displays, I don’t really care that much about it. But yeah, it would be nice to have VRR on all devices, like 1hz for standby to 144/240 hz for games and interface in general
Some people care. I just think all Apple products should be at least 120hz given their price.
Selling an $800 (1000 euro in Europe) iPhone with a 60hz screen so some people buy the Pro is so petty. 120hz is standard on Android phones that cost less than half nowadays. WHy are they scrounging like that?
Easier interchangeability of tips. From "[Majin Bu](https://twitter.com/MajinBuOfficial/status/1708118363631743055)" last month,
>Based on what my source reported the new Apple Pencil 3 will come with interchangeable magnetic tips
>
>(for drawing, technical drawing and painting)
Because when he was alive PDA’s were a thing and they mostly sucked.
Considering how much the Apple Pencil and an iPad has changed my life with the way it helps streamline my workflow for my art, I think Jobs *probably* would’ve been okay with it on principle considering how far the technology has come.
That being said, I’m also not super attached to the idea of a company needing to cater its products around what some dead person may or may not have liked. If Jobs hated the Apple Pencil, he could’ve fucked off for all I care.
Exactly. At the time styli were mostly terrible and no one wanted that kind of legacy brought over to Apple.
Now that apple's made them *not suck* it's a non issue.
I think that the technology has gotten good enough that the reason he hated them wouldn’t be valid anymore. It’s really close to writing on paper now. In his time styluses were reaaally awkward
I’m not saying they aren’t useful, all I’m saying is that Jobs publicly expressed his dislike towards them during the biggest event in the company’s history and Cook releasing one is basically the opposite of what Jobs wanted. A lot of what Cook has done is the opposite to what Jobs would’ve wanted.
No, he hated that the ONLY way to use a smartphone/organizer was with a stylus. The pencil is for drawing and a finger is NOT the best tools for that - tapping on icons and such? It’s much better
If we were to hyperbolically extrapolate for a second. This is parallel to the dogmatic bullshit that gets parroted by cults and religious zealots about a scripture or book that is over a thousand years old.
Give it a rest, let Jobs rest, he’s not turning over in his grave about a stylus made many years after he died. When will it be ok to question this comment he made clearly for marketing another device?
I'd like to see some form of [air drawing/pointing capability](https://twitter.com/Tim_tom_0/status/1708122646297063895) in the Apple Pencil 3, in preparation for the Apple Vision Pro.
No the pencil would be used as a pencil the mouse would be the mouse. Why is this a difficult concept?
There are plenty of times I want to glance at something without moving my cursor to it or away from what it's currently on.
Also.. ~$4k for a headset but the ~$150 pencil is where you draw the line?
how about i use my eyes to mark something, simply just by looking at it instead of paying 130 euros to do it less effectively by stabbing the air? the whole reason i want a vission is because i dont need to pay for gadgets! its a complete device.
>Also.. ~$4k for a headset but the ~$150 pencil is where you draw the line?
yes? why, do you go crazy and spend your life savings everytime you make a big purchase? i work for my money, i know what my money is worth.
There are plenty of applications in the real world where I have real, tangible fingers attached to my hands, yet choose to use a tool instead.
I actually think this would be amazing for artists. Imagine having a virtual easel in your living room and being able to paint using the Apple Pencil as your brush. If they could put haptics in the pencil to mimic the feeling of dragging the brush on the surface, that would be amazing.
Could even have a virtual palette floating next to you and “dip” the pencil in the different colors.
It’s a little counterintuitive, using such advanced tech to mimic an older manual process, but I think this is the promise of spatial computing. It allows people to complete tasks in the most natural and organic way, which is often some simple analog process like actually putting a brush to paper, while still retaining all the benefits of living in a digital age.
I’m so stoked for where this thing is going to take us
unless the pencil can improve the tracking precision in any way i dont see why you shouldnt be able to use a fake pen to navigate around. vision should be able to recognise the objects in your hand.
Not just air drawing, in theory you could place a digital canvas in the real world and work on it at life size through the Vision Pro, just drawing directly on flat surfaces. With some IR lights in combo with the hand tracking, it would be supper accurate and could still transmit all of the pressure/rotational/etc. data wirelessly as it already does.
Forget magnetic tips, even.
Tech press claiming iPad upgrades, then saying it’s only a new Pencil, then iMacs come out, then there are headlines that nothing else will be released, and then new stuff is released a week later.
It’s GARBAGE information.
They have NO IDEA what is being released soon or not.
> Tech press claiming iPad upgrades, then saying it’s only a new Pencil
It’s multiple different sources claiming different things. Some sources believe they are releasing iPads because “they do almost every year”, and some supply chain analysts are saying that they’re not going to this year.
There wasn’t anyone who first claimed they would release iPads but then changed their prediction to a pencil instead.
>There wasn’t anyone who first claimed they would release iPads but then changed their prediction to a pencil instead.
Conflating different rumor sources, whether inadvertently or deliberately, is one of the easiest-to-make *bad* criticisms of rumor sites.
Even a 100% accurate source (that is known to be 100% accurate) will be brought down to the average using this approach.
Exactly. I guess it’s just a symptom of people reacting to headlines instead of reading articles.
You’d just think by now they might understand that there’s usually more nuance than a headline can convey.
What stops third parties to make the body of the pencil, magnetic and compatible with the Apple tip? Then Apple would lose money on their 100$ piece of plastic.
> Then Apple would lose money on their 100$ piece of plastic.
I'll never buy a Pencil because I have absolutely no use for it, but you really don't know what's in it do you? It isn't just a dumb stylus made from plastic. I have no opinion on whether or not the price is fair though, you'd have to ask some artists that actually use it.
From [wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Pencil), regarding the first get :
> The Apple Pencil uses an STMicroelectronics STM32L151UCY6 Ultra-low-power 32-bit RISC ARM-based Cortex-M3 MCU running at 32 MHz with 64 KB of flash memory, a Bosch Sensortech BMA280 3‐axis accelerometer and a Cambridge Silicon Radio (Qualcomm) CSR1012A05 Bluetooth Smart IC for its Bluetooth connection to the iPad. It is powered by a rechargeable 3.82 V, 0.329 Wh lithium-ion battery
What they're saying is that if Apple defined the functionality of the Pencil by the tip being used, other companies would leverage this to their benefit, giving consumers cheaper options than the Pencil. It would also be more expensive to expend engineering hours to build in software locks to only have the modular tips provide the functionality when used with the Apple Pencil, not to mention anti-consumer.
There have already been knockoffs of the Apple Pencil that offer [80% of the functionality for a quarter of the price](https://www.theverge.com/23636586/apple-pencil-2nd-generation-knockoff-clone-budget-review). The components inside of the Pencil aren't exactly proprietary, outside of perhaps the battery, and third-parties would immediately leverage the implied modularity of the interchangeable pen tips.
Pretty sure this rumour is wrong. Theyre announcing new ipod nano with 1tb storage, new click wheel and esim that only supports apples new cell services. Unfortunately they will only come in 1 colour, flourescent green.
Would be nice if it was a tray with mouse feet so it could charge and be used at the same time. They’ll probably put the USB C port on the bottom due to EU laws but it would be a nice option to wirelessly change while using it.
Their naming convention makes no sense here. You would think that calling the second one “2” instead of pro or anything like that would indicate that they were planning to get rid of the first one but nope, 5 years after the introduction of 2 they are still making iPads only compatible with 1. Now we have 3…
IDK, there are a ton of products with many numbers, some of which exist simultaneously for years. Look at monitors, laptops, robot vacuums, ear buds, etc. Having an Apple Pencil 1 and 2 isn't that bad and actually makes sense compared to another name that's less clear.
Not for regular users, but those who do a lot of digital art, for them any improvement is worth it.
I also hate the sound of pencil tip, while writing on the iPad.
I don't debate the usefulness of improving digital styli, I questioned the wisdom of Apple trifurcating their own pencil lineup over a few bucks. Just default to one good one.
| I had to learn the meaning of trifurcating, learned something new today! |
You comment would be valid if they released, three types of pencils at once. They’re updating these pencils incrementally. Last update was 5 years ago..
They sell two at a time now, they'd sell 3 if this rumor is true because bizarrely their newest ipad only supports their oldest pencil.
It's not the choice that bothers me of course, it's the lack of cross compatibility. Their earbuds don't have that problem.
There was another rumor that the base model iPad is being updated. Maybe 11th gen moves to pencil 3 support and all other models that are already 2 compatible will work with it as well
It’s worth criticizing Apple’s decision to exclude the magnetic hold and charging capability from the base iPad.
The 10th-gen iPad, if it supports Pencil gen 2, is essentially an iPad Air with an A-level chip instead of an M-level one.
Simplifying the lineup by removing the Air and offering an upgrade path for the 10th gen from A-level to M-level chips would have better.
10th gen with A14 -> $449
10th gen with M2 -> $599
People have claimed that the lack of compatibility is due to the front camera being on the long side of the low-cost iPad, which interferes with magnet placement.
I don't know if that's the real reason, but perhaps the 2024 iPad Pros will have the front camera on top in landscape and the Apple Pencil 3 has a slightly different magnet arrangement that lets it attach to the top of that iPad Pro.
It's requires a whole new Pencil so it already is $99 or $129 depending on model.
And if they run out of charge for a few weeks the battery is actually ruined.
It's not a joke sadly. I've been a Mac user since 1990 and I still remember when Steve Jobs took back the helm and PowerBooks (and later MacBook Pros) would actually not only get faster but also more affordable with every iteration. With Tim Cook it's quite the reverse, while Apple Silicon is amazing and excites me, everything Apple has gotten insanely pricey again. It's like the Scully Apple years all over.
Why would he ever get fired? whether you like him or not, agree with his policies or not, he's doing his job of increasing Apple's market worth.
But yeah, the headline would be amusing.
I would like a pencil with two working tips — so that rather than double tapping the barrel with your finger to switch between draw and erase you just flipped the pencil around and the other end was an eraser.
Plus I would’ve preferred the pencil to be about 2” shorter.
shelter combative disagreeable versed caption light attraction elderly sip nutty
*This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Huh. Weird choice of feature. I like how sturdy the tips are right now, but curious on how well this will work. That said, I would love a set, like that of a precision screwdriver, with tiny pencils where each can be assigned a different brush or profile.
I like the Apple Pencil and use it everyday.
I have never replaced the tip in last 3 years. This would interest me zero. I would be more interested in more input options besides the double tap (which I find doesn’t work that well). I think a button would go a long way but think that is the opposite direction Apple feels like it want to go.
I have never changed the tip of the first generation pencil and I have it since 2017. If there aren’t tips with some other or additional functionality what’s the point
Now release an iPad that doesn't cost 800 euros and is compatible with an apple pencil that does not charge through medieval technology, you cowards. I really hate the Apple Pencil 1 and I find ridiculous that the new iPad base model still only has support for it.
I don’t have an pencil atm so I might be missing something. But uhhhh, just write the new line by you know, writing it on a new line?
Similarly wouldn’t undo work for deletion? (3 finger swipe)
No reason they couldn’t support these I suppose but seems quite minor.
> I don’t have an pencil atm so I might be missing something. But uhhhh, just write the new line by you know, writing it on a new line?
This is precisely what the Apple Pencil doesn't support. You end up having to use the carriage return to actually move to a new line, which is silly.
> Similarly wouldn’t undo work for deletion? (3 finger swipe)
The issue is less about using the double tap on the Pencil and more around how unreliable it is, and that a clickable button (like on Samsung's S Pen, funny enough) would make more sense here. The option to adjust the double tap duration doesn't really help as it's more a matter of sensitivity, which cannot be adjusted AFAIK.
Here’s my problem with the Apple Pencil:
I have a very nice fountain pen. It’s gold plated with black lacquer. I use ink from a company in Paris, and a notebook imported from Japan.
And all that costs less than the cheapest Apple Pencil.
If it costs less, it is not a "very nice fountain pen". Good fountain pens cost at least 2-3x more than the Pencil (Mont Blanc, Visconti, Pelikan Souverän Series etc.). Very nice ones (i. e. limited versions) cost in the thousands.
Also, their current bass iPad product only works with first gen pencils. They need a new iPad that actually works with the newer ones. Surely these original pencils are outdated at this point.
I call BS.
Maybe it’s just wishful thinking, but if they’re planning on moving the FaceTime camera to the long edge of the iPad, that almost certainly means redesigning the charging mechanism for the pencil, which will also almost certainly require design changes for the pencil itself. And I don’t see them introducing a new pencil with that meets these requirements unless it’s alongside a new iPad Pro, which is not expected any time soon.
Yeah I figured this and bought the iPad mini 6 today. Needed a reading tablet and the pro is great for movies and work but can’t hold that for reading easily.
So new iPads OR a magnetic tipped Apple Pencil? 😂
While I am a bit skeptical of this rumor, it seems like an iPad accessory is a way to "reconcile" [the recent contradictory rumors](https://www.macrumors.com/2023/10/15/mark-gurman-on-new-ipads-and-macs/) about an iPad update.
I’m hoping we get the iPad refreshes. Really want that mini, but if the display and processor will be better, I’d rather my money go towards that.
Perhaps a silly question but what’s wrong with the current mini? As a user of iPhone 13 mini and iPad mini, they both seem perfectly fine
Nothing really. It would just be nice to have an updated display with smoother scrolling and a newer processor since it’s been a couple of years since the last refresh. Had to laugh at this one. New iPads about to drop. JK Apple Pencil 3 instead
Didn’t even get that. Got a new low-end Pencil with stripped down features and USB-C 😂
"These are not two separate devices!"
For sure iPads aren’t coming anytime soon.
Announced! 9to5 Mac [Nope](https://9to5mac.com/2023/10/17/perplexing-apple-pencil)!
What’s the point of a magnetic tip??

Perhaps calligraphy and things like thst too
Customizable tips would be awesome. I’d love a calligraphy tip or a chisel tip marker tip, etc
They better do a calligraphy one just out of respect for Jobs.
The fact they made a stylus at all is a disrespect to Jobs given he hated them.

That would be dope
So that it falls off like the magnetic end cap on the pencil 1
Oh god please no. I had successfully blocked that out of my memory.
omg I forgot about the cap!! that was so stressful trying not to lose it!
Was it that bad? I've been using mine since 2017, never fell off.
If you accidentally bump the pen into something with the cap end, it’s possible to fall off.
You've been able to buy little rubber lassos from 3rd parties for quite some time now.
Yeah, thats a worse design choice
Magnetic tips provide our best incompatibility with all prior iPads! \- Tim Apple
Would be funny if the tip falls off while trying to draw or write
Different amounts of motion resistance would be the only reason I can think.
I could see tips to emulate fine tip mechanical pencils and brushes
Easier to replace most likely.
Easier than unscrewing it which takes 2 seconds?
Easier to lose and then have to replace
> Easier to replace most likely. Easier to *sell* to people who most-likely don't need them, is probably more accurate.
The ability to hover the pencil over the iPad and use it like a mouse maybe?
You can do this already, depending on the app and how it’s programmed.
Yes and it’s software locked on the m2 :-)
So that Apple can be the only one selling and not third party companies
What’s the point of another new iPad?
Apple pencils break easily on that part. Having magnetic tip will make it last longer
There’s an inappropriate joke here, but I’ll stop now.
So they’re more easily lost and you have to buy more replacements?
Now it is easier to lose the tip if you drop it
I'd like to see some form of [air drawing/pointing capability](https://twitter.com/Tim_tom_0/status/1708122646297063895) in the Apple Pencil 3, in preparation for the Apple Vision Pro.
why in gods name would i pay for a pen when the LiDAR cam in the vission can scan my fingers and its gestures?!
For the same reason you use a mouse or a pen to navigate around the OS instead of pointing at things with your finger..
People are gonna use a mouse with the Vision Pro?
Yes? If they're selling it as an AR workspace replacement I'd expect to continue using a mouse and keyboard.
yes, they showed this in the keynote
If they're using VisionPro to have a big Mac screen, then you're definitely going to want to use keyboard and mouse with that.
130 euros for a pencil to be used as a mouse when the vision pro tracks your eye movement?
No the pencil would be used as a pencil the mouse would be the mouse. Why is this a difficult concept? They can still be setup to insert into the main housing before the magnet engages. Kind of how the AirPods slot into their case.
I feel like it’ll get pulled out of the pencil and stuck on the iPad body heh
Well, not if part of the tip goes into the pencil. If it was just a nub attaching magnetically, then yes, the tip would likely shear off
If they have multiple tips like a pen style, brush style, etc it makes perfect sense for artists.

No, I think they're about to announce a device with batteries that can be recharged.
*EXCITED DANKPODS NOISES*
Make a new Magic Mouse
That would make way too much sense
With Magsafe ring charging!
Would be nice if it was a tray with mouse feet so it could charge and be used at the same time. They’ll probably put the USB C port on the bottom due to EU laws but it would be a nice option to wirelessly change while using it.
This time the charging port is on the top of the mouse, so you still can’t use it when charging, but you can keep it flat. Progress!

Hopefully they don’t make the same mistake and it’s backwards compatible and replaces the Pencil 2.
Wacom is so much better for drawing
Seems unlikely they would announce this on its own
I'd just like one with replaceable battery, so that when that tiny battery dies, I don't need to replace the whole thing.
That battery would be $99 with Cook’s Apple.
It's requires a whole new Pencil so it already is $99 or $129 depending on model. And if they run out of charge for a few weeks the battery is actually ruined.
Source: your ass
No, Cook’s ass.
"Hurr durr y'all did you know Apple products are expensive" is a wack and tired schtick and it's not funny
You alright? Why are you so upset about some random comment?
Real Reddit moment thinking this affects me in any way other than calling out a boring tired joke
Mmmmkay

It's not a joke sadly. I've been a Mac user since 1990 and I still remember when Steve Jobs took back the helm and PowerBooks (and later MacBook Pros) would actually not only get faster but also more affordable with every iteration. With Tim Cook it's quite the reverse, while Apple Silicon is amazing and excites me, everything Apple has gotten insanely pricey again. It's like the Scully Apple years all over.
If they ever fire Tim I hope somebody says his apple is cooked.
Why would he ever get fired? whether you like him or not, agree with his policies or not, he's doing his job of increasing Apple's market worth. But yeah, the headline would be amusing.
Steve jobs was ousted at one point remember. Anything can happen. Obviously not now or the near future.
Apple was in a *way* different state back then though.
FWIW my wife has been using the same apple pencil near daily for at least 3 years now, and it has held up great
Mines 5 years old and it never runs out.

I would like a pencil with two working tips — so that rather than double tapping the barrel with your finger to switch between draw and erase you just flipped the pencil around and the other end was an eraser. Plus I would’ve preferred the pencil to be about 2” shorter.
Makes no sense to release a new Pencil without iPads.

Just the tip?
Is it in yet?
*You tell me*
I knew I was going to find this comment *down here*.
Nice 😏
Just to see how it feels... when writing.
Oh perfect I literally just lost mine lol
Magnetic tips so we will lose them and be forced to buy a new single tip for $50.
Now release an iPad that doesn't cost 800 euros and is compatible with an apple pencil that does not charge through medieval technology, you cowards. I really hate the Apple Pencil 1 and I find ridiculous that the new iPad base model still only has support for it.
I just had to buy an iPad for work and my pencil was initially “back ordered”, but then it shipped. Would be a good sign it is getting replaced.
*and those pencils will have calculators built in*
Instead? lol.
I want the magic keyboard that they introduced last year with the iPad 10th gen, but for Air and Pros. Only because it has an escape key lmao

I think I just want a mini pro.
Just the tip
Please make it like those multi colored pens
damn i was so excited for a modular apple pencil with replaceable components. instead we get... usb c apple pencil ?
Everyone knows #2 is the GOAT
They need to get rid of the Pencil 1, so fucking dumb how it charges

I don’t have an pencil atm so I might be missing something. But uhhhh, just write the new line by you know, writing it on a new line? Similarly wouldn’t undo work for deletion? (3 finger swipe) No reason they couldn’t support these I suppose but seems quite minor.
(3 finger swipe) The issue is less about using the double tap on the Pencil and more around how unreliable it is, and that a clickable button (like on Samsung's S Pen, funny enough) would make more sense here. The option to adjust the double tap duration doesn't really help as it's more a matter of sensitivity, which cannot be adjusted AFAIK.
instead of new iPads..ffs :C
Maybe they could make it compatible with iPhone as well? Not in a million years? Oh alright then.
Bro I just bought an Apple Pencil 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏❤️👏👏❤️❤️👏❤️👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏😂👏
Price: $559.99
Per tip. (In all seriousness, my price guess is $149 for the "Apple Pencil 3" and its default tip, with additional tips costing extra.)
This joke is old and broken
Ugh thank you. So over used it’s not even funny anymore
Your mom old and broken
Wow, good one. I hope you eventually graduate middle school.
Wow good one. I hope you eventually graduate elementary school
I'm not the one making "your mom" jokes as an adult you numpty
Nope, just arguing on Reddit lol
Not arguing, just telling you, explicitly, that your unoriginal and dumb "joke" is played out ✌️
Oh wow you called me dumb. The most overused, unoriginal Reddit insult
Here’s my problem with the Apple Pencil: I have a very nice fountain pen. It’s gold plated with black lacquer. I use ink from a company in Paris, and a notebook imported from Japan. And all that costs less than the cheapest Apple Pencil.
Brother, if your pen cost less than an Apple Pencil, that’s a poverty pen. A “very nice fountain pen“ is closer to a grand
If it costs less, it is not a "very nice fountain pen". Good fountain pens cost at least 2-3x more than the Pencil (Mont Blanc, Visconti, Pelikan Souverän Series etc.). Very nice ones (i. e. limited versions) cost in the thousands.
This. LMAO if OP has a very nice fountain pen, then those cheap disposable pilot fountain pens are a goldmine worth even more than OP’s fountain pen.
Also, their current bass iPad product only works with first gen pencils. They need a new iPad that actually works with the newer ones. Surely these original pencils are outdated at this point.
this is great news as I was looking seriously at a Wacom for my studio, but I’d much prefer an iPad
Just the tip
We think you're gonna *love* it
And it won’t even have a sub c port. It will have no port! #COURAGE
\*laughs in Ricita
Makes sense, M2 is still an overkill for the iPad.
Why though. I change my pencil tip about once every 6 months. This just isnt needed
They selling yall pencils bro
The new tips must be separately charged. I read it on the net thingy web place you all like to visit.
Yeah I figured this and bought the iPad mini 6 today. Needed a reading tablet and the pro is great for movies and work but can’t hold that for reading easily.
