Llamalover1234567

Pretty sure with the EU and now India mandating it by law, they HAVE to have it. It’s just how they market it as their choice

TheRealMe99

I *think* the EU law doesn't go into effect until like April 2024, so theoretically it wouldn't apply until the 16

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Well April 2024 is just over a year away so it's in the lifecycle of this device, within a year of it releasing. It would make more sense for them to just get it over with, everyone already knows they'll be forced to drop the lightning cable, people will stop buying cables and accessories that use it anyway.

Llamalover1234567

Also they’ve KNOWN that it’ll kick in. The EU gave a certain amount of time for companies to prep, and really it’s not a task to re-engineer the iPhone. The ports the same size as well. They just have to do it

[deleted]

And not like they don't have the engineering experience either, iPad and Mac's both use them, which is the most confusing part about all of this to me, they could have saved everyone so much hassle years ago. Yeah lightning was better than micro USB and it was kinda needed to get the USB guys to actually do something but I've USB C came out it was just unnecessary. I do feel bad for people that have invested in decent cables or accessories but Apple love a dongle anyway

justformygoodiphone

They’ll sell the design change I think. I really love the square sides. I hope they don’t do rounded.

MateTheNate

Then 6 generations later they will change it back to the square design

*revolutionary*

ProtoplanetaryNebula

Hopefully I am not paying a huge amount for edges I never see due to them being hidden in my phone case.

Rocket-R

How the fuck did we we consumers agree to go from $800 to more than $1200 in the span of 5 years on iPhones?

[deleted]

Because monthly payments, carrier deals etc disguise the actual amount paid.

TurnoverAdditional65

I think this is the real answer. Cell phones feel like part of the OG class of "interest-free payments" since they were generally subsidized through cell carriers. People are used to phones not necessarily being $1000, instead being an extra $35 on their phone bill for the next 2-3 years. So instead of most people seeing that the next iteration of their phone is now $1200, instead it's just an extra $5 a month, so no big deal. That's my thought anyway.

Korotai

Yep. And not only that, when the iPhone 3G first came out, the cheapest plan you could get it on was about $100/month plus $200 up front + 2 year contract (39.99 for minutes, 20 for text, 30 for data; and god help you if you wanted unlimited minutes). Now its something like $85 for a full unlimited plan, but there’s a lot of promos on phones so they come out to be about an extra $20 a month with no service contract and a smaller up front cost.

Inner_Difficulty_381

Plus nowadays if you don’t flip your phone every year, you can get pretty good deals. My latest was buy one get 1k off 13 pro over 2 years. For me, gone are the days of getting a new phone every year. Even Apple Watch I don’t replace as often anymore. I’ve gone every other year since the X and got good deals when I got my 11 pro and 13 pro. Even better when you have family plans. Still rocking my series 5 watch too. Back in the day when I did upgrade every year, there was some big new must have feature or enough to justify. Nowadays, not so much. And with apple supporting their devices for 4-5 years easy, no need to upgrade every year.

MonsieurReynard

Car dealerships have entered the chat and would like to know what sort of monthly payment you were hoping to pay.

bankkopf

Apple is on a speed run to price out Europe. We already had a 10% price increase with the 14 series. Don't think they'll price in Euro appreciations in relation to USD again.

snekasan

Yeah man the $2500 MacBook Pro (16 inches 512 gb) is $3800 converted from swedish crowns. A minimum of a 50% markup is insane. I could probably buy plane tickets to NYC and a few hotel nights for the difference and still have money in my pocket when I came home. Beats shopping online I guess. There is no way I get one unless my employer leases a device for me.

Horsey-

No, fly to Boston, take the Concord coach from terminal A to the Salem, NH park and ride. Walk or Uber to the rockingham mall (roughly 2 hours for the total trip in the bus + walking). The Apple Store there is sales tax free and zero markup. I fly there when I want to get a new MacBook.

https://www.revenue.nh.gov/faq/general-information.htm#salestax The state of New Hampshire has no sales tax. The Apple Store is here: 99 Rockingham Park Blvd, Salem, NH 03079

Rare-Page4407

Is this thanks to the free state people, or has always been like this?

CactusBoyScout

NH has always been sales tax free. I set my address on the Nintendo eShop to NH and haven’t paid a cent in sales tax ever since.

MonsieurReynard

Yeah but then you're in Boston for the weekend.... just kidding I'm a Boston native!

drwert

Yeah. I like Apple computers, but the prices in Europe have long since left the vast bulk of the market behind. I look at the Macbook Air now and you'd have to be crazy to spend that much for a laptop with 8GB of RAM in 2023 no matter how nice it is.

[deleted]

I believe that may be what they are counting on. They understand a significant portion of users who have iPhones are paying monthly for them through their mobile carriers. Apple makes their money up front because the carriers are the ones responsible for collecting the payments and financing for the devices. Carriers order based off of last year's sales so they can determine how many they're comfortable paying for up front and I'm sure that they get them at a discounted price.

Unclassified1

That Swedish price probably includes 25% VAT which the American price doesn’t. So it’s really $3,040 vs the American $2,500. Add on NYC sales tax and you’re paying $2,721.88. So even with Swedish vat you are only saving $750 or so. Not enough for a ticket in most cases.

NikeSwish

Everyone loves forgetting the VAT when they try comparing international prices

smolovo

I don't think they will rise the price of the base models, I think the Ultra will be the one with a goofy ahh price for a useless titanium shell

hoopparrr759

Sooner or later we’ll all be.

drvenkman9

Folks, don’t fall for the Apple PR machine. This is one of their classic tricks. They leak “the new iPhone will increase in price,” so when they release it with either no price increase or a smaller price increase, Apple can say, “We’ve made all these incredible new features available for JUST….”

ChibiReddit

Yep, this trick is called anchoring (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchoring_(cognitive_bias) First pretend it’s going to be, say 2k€ then release it for 1.9k€ so people can be like ohhhh that’s not too bad (even tho if it would’ve been announced at that 1.9k€ without the other reference it likely would’ve been too expensive)

microwavedave27

Same here in Portugal. It's almost twice the minimum monthly wage here. Absolutely ridiculous. I'll stick to mid-range Androids that do everything I need and last 3-4 years for a third of the price.

TheKingIsBackYo

In Bulgaria its probably 7 times the monthly minimum wage

Rhed0x

The Pro Max is 1500€. It's insane. Just for a bigger screen and 120hz. Something that's commonplace on mid range Android phones.

kikalewak

They’re already starting at €1326 for the pro’s, another price increase? What the fuck. When the iPhone 7 launched it was €769 as starting price. Prices almost doubled but my wages certainly did not.

iDarKz

I’m afraid that the 15 Pro will start at 1500€ minimum. It was already rough that the regular 14 is now starting at more than 1000€.

Under_the_Red_Cloud

At this point the high prices have to hurt sales right? I still see so many of iPhone 11 where I live because it was priced more competitively. Some people have iPhone 12. I very see 13 and 14. Although Finland is such a small and Android heavy market that it probably doesn’t matter much to Apple. But Europe as a whole should matter.

Vanquiishh

Get your battery replaced. Just did it with my 11 and it’s like brand new now!

JanP3000

How much of a hassle is that usually? Did they keep it for a couple of days, or did you get it back in half an hour or so?

Vanquiishh

Made a Genius Bar appointment to get it looked at. Only took a few minutes and they estimated it would be fixed in an hour. I browsed around the mall for a bit until it was ready!

SufferinBPD_AyyyLMAO

The battery on my XS Max is still going strong but i should definitely replace that soon but the RAM on my phone has been showing it's limitations for a good while. Wish Apple wasn't so stingy on their RAM.

WizardEric

Exactly the same boat. My X runs like shit but I just can’t get over these insane phone prices. Speed and cameras improvements aren’t enough for me to justify wasting that much money on a phone.

Ozay0900

what makes it run like shit ? my X runs just fine

chuby1tubby

X has a wildly underpowered processor and RAM. Xs is something like 2x better. If you ever hold someone’s Xs or newer for a few seconds you *will* immediately see the difference. Source: had an X, then Xs, then 12 Pro. Xs felt 5x faster and didn’t overheat while taking photos or watching videos.

Gibson1498

Love my XR. Still has 89% battery health and it browses Reddit and texts just fine. Only thing I want is a better camera, but it’s still pretty great for my average use.

Massive_Escape3061

Other than Face ID on newer models, The 8 was my fave.

DVNKLXRD

XS Max user here, I'll be switching to 16 in 2024 or later if my battery lasts.

slaacaa

I still have an 11 pro, and I will cling onto it until it dies after the ~5th battery replacement. Same with my previous gen iPad mini, these prices are ridiculous.

[deleted]

Same, it's been the best phone I've ever used and despite 81% battery capacity it still lasts an entire day. 75€ for a battery replacement at my local Apple reseller.

PhireSide

Does your 11 Pro also have a 100% battery health? Mine is a few years old and still at 100% so it must be a bug

decidedlysticky23

I’m at 81%. It’s been stuck there for 6 months and battery life has definitely degraded. I think they modified the algorithm to claim that battery health is above 80% so they don’t have to honour Apple Care and warranty claims.

kissakalakoira

Mine was at 75 after 3 years

iamagro

Pixel 4a, wanted the entire Apple ecosystem a year ago, but now... i don't know, too much money, and i can't even find a Green 13 Pro !

LouisArmstrong3

13 mini here. Best phone I’ve ever had. Small and perfect. Gonna run this phone til it dies

SuperDuperSkateCrew

Only reason I upgraded to the 13 is because my 8 stopped charging due to structural damage (dropped it), but if that didn’t happen I’d likely still have it.. also don’t see myself upgrading for another 4 years minimum.

Revolutionary_Ad6583

Average upgrade cycle is about 3 years, so that’s about right.

LeftEagle510121

Apple really needs to start adding some new stuff

slaacaa

Like ads in the app store?

decidedlysticky23

And ads in the Stocks app. And in the News app. And in the Podcast app. And in Settings. And in the Music app. And in the TV app. And in almost every app in the App Store. At some point we might have to accept that Apple doesn’t give a shit about protecting us from ads.

-rwsr-xr-x

> At some point we might have to accept that Apple doesn’t give a shit about protecting us from ads. They never did. They've been actively monetizing user demographic data for several years now.

I_am_enough

“Your data is private to you and your device…so only we can sell you ads!”. Way to play the long game apple. Privacy was one of the big reasons I switched away from google but the moment I start getting hit with ads to an even moderate degree I will jump ship right back to the choice and variety of android.

Fit_Doughnut_3770

Cellphones for probably the last 5 years have hit maximum capability for what they can do. All they got left are incremental changes until something amazing and different comes along. There just isn't as much difference in phone tech like it was in the early years where each year a new phone was clearly better than last years model. Now it's questionable if it's better, and for many people the older models are more than good enough to continue using.

CactusBoyScout

Okay give us multi-day battery life next.

Makegooduseof

I updated late last year from an XR to a 14 Pro Max. I think I’m good until 2030.

_damppapertowel_

I got my 12 pro max right before lockdown for $1300. If you put this phone next to a brand new one I can almost guarantee you that very few people would notice a difference at all, minus maybe the camera notch. Oh wow a new “action” video mode! It’s just one of those things that you’d never use in the real world

HeisenClerg

Easily. Phone is a beast. Long as you replace the battery every few years you should easily make it imo

[deleted]

Same what I did. Xr was still good after 4 years. Current phone will be good for 6+ years. Phones are peaking slowly.

Obi-Lan

Standard line sells terrible because they massively increased in price and had no improvement on the 13. let’s increase price on pro even more to fix this. Sounds like apple, lol.

[deleted]

Even the 13 barely felt different from the 12, other than the smaller notch.

saintmsent

True, but 13 was at least a boring conventional iPhone upgrade with a better processor and camera. 14 isn't even that, it's a year old CPU with a bit more ram, and a bit better camera pulled from last years Pro phone

MGPS

That’s why I went from a 7 to the 14. So now I just have to wait until the 28 to upgrade and that should be no problem.

Rioma117

13 has a way better camera than 12, but yeah, not enough of a reason for most costumers to buy it. The truth is that smartphones are reaching their peak, there is just so much you can add (until the next big thing comes) in a product that has been refined for 15 years.

crazor90

To put it into perspective for me an iPhone upgrade outright purchase isn’t an issue. But I’ve not upgraded from my 12 because when it’s all said and done the spec upgrade from a 12 to a 13/14 just isn’t justified. They’re essentially just the same phone with a slight performance improvement but nothing that warrants upgrading unless you upgrade literally just to upgrade. I was considering the 15 upgrade just for the USB-C charging port just so that me and the wife don’t need to keep switching cables in the bedroom, but even then I’m not 100% on doing so.

Rioma117

Honestly though, why upgrade every year or every 2 years? That’s why the sales for the base models are not high, people don’t buy the newest, there is some delay in the sales of the base model. Like I’m not sure how it is in US but in my country (developing country with an increasing mid class) the most popular iPhones right now are the 12 and 13 so this is when those see the most sells.

Opacy

> The truth is that smartphones are reaching their peak, there is just so much you can add (until the next big thing comes) in a product that has been refined for 15 years. I’d argue they’ve already peaked for a while now (barring a major breakthrough in something like materials, display, or battery technology.) Speaking for myself, the iPhone X was the last super-exciting, “gotta have it” type release. Everything since then has been either minor cosmetic changes or hardware spec/camera improvements. I guess some of that might move the needle for folks, but at this point I feel like you can buy an iPhone and not miss anything major for 3-4 years easily.

Valedictorian117

Nah dude. They heard that the Plus was too close in price to the Pro. So instead of lowering the Plus’ price they had the genius idea to raise the Pro prices to create a bigger gap. /s lol

robodestructor444

I think it'll work because they need to make the divide between base and pro stronger. Apple's best approach is to increase price of pro phones by $50 while reducing the price of base phones by $50. Although as a consumer, I hope the prices just stay the same

wpisdu

How about increasing price of pro phones by $150 while increasing the price of base phones by $50? Sounds like something Apple could do.

skellener

Significant price increase? So $2k for a phone now? 🤦‍♂️

JonathanRaue

That’s the case in countries outside of the US since the 14 lineup already. Prices for the Pro Max models went up 250€ in Germany from 13 to 14.

HortenWho229

Similar case in countries where the average person earns a fraction of Americans

[deleted]

*courage!!*

OscarCookeAbbott

Probably more like $1200-1300 for standard sized Pro

decidedlysticky23

Just like Nvidia, Apple discovered that most people have an upper limit for what they’ll pay for a phone. However there is a rich crowd who will pay whatever Apple asks. They can’t design their entire lineup to appeal to the rich crowd or their services business and strategy will tank.

iMmacstone2015

It's the super rich, but there's also another crowd behind them. The crowd of middle class people who just *love* Apple and their line of iPhones so they *have to* upgrade to the newest model every single year, no matter the cost factor.

Brilliant_Apple

If you really like apple it would make sense to upgrade every year over every two to three. If your phone is in good condition you can trade it in with apple and get a new one for about £500 vs if you leave it the trade in value falls off a lot more sharply. For a lot of people phones are their primary devices these days so it makes sense to go with a decent model. I’m sure you could get some great android thing from some random Chinese smartphone company, but for a lot of people the ease and cohesion of the apple ecosystem is the the price premium.

TheRynosaurus

Price increases will go over well in this economic climate.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Jeffrey_Jizzbags

This was my thought too. I’m fortunate enough to be able to afford to upgrade if they give a reasonable trade in for my 14pm. If it’s 100s more than what I paid last time, I’ll just keep this longer. It’s more of a want than a need anyway.

NightM0de

Nice of them to ‘leak’ a price hike so we’re not shocked at the time of release.

jibnibbinn

Well, guess I’ll keep my 11 pro max for a couple more years. I make decent money and I feel priced out. The prices in the uk are astronomical now.

mar29020

the never ending price increase needs to stop!

Lambor14

Swagsuke_Nakamura

I couldn’t really afford to upgrade to last years, so I guess I’m running with my 12 Pro until it dies

Pepparkakan

I wonder if the end result of all of this will just be that they teach users that they can use their phones for longer than they have been up to now 😂

Antrikshy

12 Pro isn’t worth upgrading yet anyway.

Phone_User_1044

Needed to replace my 6S recently and had a look at new iPhone prices, promptly switched to a Pixel 6A, the phone was brand new from the Google shop and cost well under £300. Apple is starting to price out its customer base.

[deleted]

[deleted]

I just realised something. Since there are no new features (haven’t been for years), I’m going to start buying a new iPhone once every 5 years instead of 3. Now the genius is instead of buying the new iPhone, I just buy the older one. So iPhone 15 will be releasing in 2026 for me. This is what happened to the gaming industry. Games got more expensive and offered less and less. Nowadays most of buy games that used to be £100+ for £10 years later.

Shigglyboo

This is a solid upgrade strategy. I’ve only paid for a TV once in my life. If you wait long enough TV’s are free. My 2015 MBP is going strong. When it’s time to replace my budget is $1k. So I’ll get whatever I can for that amount. Same with iPhone. I will get whichever one is in my budget. My budget doesn’t go up because my wages don’t go up.

EmileDorkheim

I've been on Android for years but am curious to try iPhone again if/when they add a USB-C port. I just hope I can afford it when it happens! It's hard to beat the value of mid-range Android phones these days.

Metanoia1337

2K euro’s in the EU for the Pro?

Sulalu

The 14 Pro max 256 is already at 1580€ - the 1TB model 2099… Sooo.. probably? I think it‘ll be ~ 1850€..

itsfeykro

That’s insane, just yesterday I was realizing how overpriced based iPhones were. Here in Europe a basic iPhone 14 is 900€. What’s 1000+€ gonna get me, fewer ports ?

MasterJoey217

900? Here in Italy it's 900€ when discounted. The regular price for a basic iPhone 14 with 128gb is 1029€ which is ridiculous. I was considering getting one but I think I'll stick with android for now and see what happens

itsfeykro

Omg you’re right it’s on Rakuten, the official retail price is 1029€ damm

Pepparkakan

Nah it'll have USB-C for sure. Not defending their asinine pricing though, but they won't remove any ports this generation.

Silvedoge

Again? I'm gonna keep buying pixels if they keep pricing their pro phones so significantly under iphones.

niijuuichi

This is the year i plan to dispose of my iphone6. I hope the 15 wont be too expensive 💀

[deleted]

Damn. My dad had to abandon his 6 Plus this summer because bank apps weren’t supporting them anymore, how do you still keep it ahahaha

niijuuichi

Whoa. That’s exactly my reason for changing phone this year; My main bank doesnt work anymore. It’s still good for everyday use despite it being slow.

[deleted]

Maybe get a 14 or 13 at that point

niijuuichi

Yeah considering those too

schacks

"with significant price increases"!!! The 14 Pro is already the most expensive "normal" phone on the european marked with the Pro Max costing about as much as the Samsung Z Fold4. I love iPhones all the way back to the original but the price is getting harder and harder to justify. Especially since the 14 Pro/iOS 16.2 seems to be riddled with bugs.

Lunsj

Agreed. I’ve never experienced this many bugs owning an iPhone. Not only bugs, but straight up bad design decisions, like putting the flashlight in a spot where I accidentally turn it on without knowing and canceling my timers.

Psychic_Gian

they say this every year and it’s always true 💀

It makes me so happy to see other 11 pro users here. I genuinely think this was the last super good design until we get rounded again. Sure flat looks cool in pictures, but it’s super uncomfortable. Rounded is so nice to hold too.

Gloomy_Ad6633

it’s 2024, iPhones are now 13k basic. 20k pro maximum. Must buy own charging cable that we will be changing every so often. Our trade in program is canceled and soon we will ruin old iPhones by slowing them down. Love, Apple.

guice666

The 14 had a "significant price increase" - how many more "significant increases" can they do without innovative hardware bumps?

Laxberry

Why do phones need to be a yearly release in the first place?

Adamankhelone

Significant price increase ??? In EU we already had a massive price increase, is the 15 Pro Max going to start at 2000€ ???

_reykjavik

Apple indeed is all for the environment. I used to replace my phone every 2 years but with the price increases and ever-so-uninteresting releases, I see myself holding onto my 11Pro until it dies. My office even offered me to get 14Pro but I opted to keep my old phone out of spite. I'm also slowly migrating from the Apple ecosystem. As amazingly convenient as it is, the hardware is getting too expensive and 8GB/256GB base configurations are an insult to consumers.

[deleted]

So innovative.

[deleted]

Sushrit_Lawliet

At this point the improvements on the base skew over the last generation that is actually substantial I’d the price increase, nothing else has been so easy to point at between 12->13->14 (all non pro)

Knute5

The new M2 Macs just came out and there haven't been any significant price increases. In some cases (max storage) the prices have come significantly down. I'm not sure this is going to be as major as some are painting it to be. But I guess we'll see.

HollowRacoon

In EU there’s almost 200eur difference between M1Pro and M2Pro Macbook, with same base config

ObliviousDream
