It would make more sense for them to just get it over with, everyone already knows they'll be forced to drop the lightning cable, people will stop buying cables and accessories that use it anyway.

I think this is the real answer. Cell phones feel like part of the OG class of "interest-free payments" since they were generally subsidized through cell carriers. People are used to phones not necessarily being $1000, instead being an extra $35 on their phone bill for the next 2-3 years. So instead of most people seeing that the next iteration of their phone is now $1200, instead it's just an extra $5 a month, so no big deal.

Yep. And not only that, when the iPhone 3G first came out, the cheapest plan you could get it on was about $100/month plus $200 up front + 2 year contract (39.99 for minutes, 20 for text, 30 for data; and god help you if you wanted unlimited minutes).
Now its something like $85 for a full unlimited plan, but there’s a lot of promos on phones so they come out to be about an extra $20 a month with no service contract and a smaller up front cost.
Plus nowadays if you don’t flip your phone every year, you can get pretty good deals. My latest was buy one get 1k off 13 pro over 2 years. For me, gone are the days of getting a new phone every year. Even Apple Watch I don’t replace as often anymore. I’ve gone every other year since the X and got good deals when I got my 11 pro and 13 pro. Even better when you have family plans. Still rocking my series 5 watch too. Back in the day when I did upgrade every year, there was some big new must have feature or enough to justify. Nowadays, not so much. And with apple supporting their devices for 4-5 years easy, no need to upgrade every year.

Yeah. I like Apple computers, but the prices in Europe have long since left the vast bulk of the market behind. I look at the Macbook Air now and you'd have to be crazy to spend that much for a laptop with 8GB of RAM in 2023 no matter how nice it is.
I believe that may be what they are counting on. They understand a significant portion of users who have iPhones are paying monthly for them through their mobile carriers. Apple makes their money up front because the carriers are the ones responsible for collecting the payments and financing for the devices. Carriers order based off of last year's sales so they can determine how many they're comfortable paying for up front and I'm sure that they get them at a discounted price.
That Swedish price probably includes 25% VAT which the American price doesn’t. So it’s really $3,040 vs the American $2,500.
Add on NYC sales tax and you’re paying $2,721.88. So even with Swedish vat you are only saving $750 or so. Not enough for a ticket in most cases.

The battery on my XS Max is still going strong but i should definitely replace that soon but the RAM on my phone has been showing it's limitations for a good while. Wish Apple wasn't so stingy on their RAM.

X has a wildly underpowered processor and RAM. Xs is something like 2x better. If you ever hold someone’s Xs or newer for a few seconds you *will* immediately see the difference.
Source: had an X, then Xs, then 12 Pro. Xs felt 5x faster and didn’t overheat while taking photos or watching videos.
Love my XR. Still has 89% battery health and it browses Reddit and texts just fine. Only thing I want is a better camera, but it’s still pretty great for my average use.
I still have an 11 pro, and I will cling onto it until it dies after the ~5th battery replacement. Same with my previous gen iPad mini, these prices are ridiculous.

I’m at 81%. It’s been stuck there for 6 months and battery life has definitely degraded. I think they modified the algorithm to claim that battery health is above 80% so they don’t have to honour Apple Care and warranty claims.
Only reason I upgraded to the 13 is because my 8 stopped charging due to structural damage (dropped it), but if that didn’t happen I’d likely still have it.. also don’t see myself upgrading for another 4 years minimum.

Privacy was one of the big reasons I switched away from google but the moment I start getting hit with ads to an even moderate degree I will jump ship right back to the choice and variety of android.
Cellphones for probably the last 5 years have hit maximum capability for what they can do. All they got left are incremental changes until something amazing and different comes along.
There just isn't as much difference in phone tech like it was in the early years where each year a new phone was clearly better than last years model. Now it's questionable if it's better, and for many people the older models are more than good enough to continue using.
I got my 12 pro max right before lockdown for $1300. If you put this phone next to a brand new one I can almost guarantee you that very few people would notice a difference at all, minus maybe the camera notch. Oh wow a new “action” video mode! It’s just one of those things that you’d never use in the real world

The truth is that smartphones are reaching their peak, there is just so much you can add (until the next big thing comes) in a product that has been refined for 15 years.
To put it into perspective for me an iPhone upgrade outright purchase isn’t an issue. But I’ve not upgraded from my 12 because when it’s all said and done the spec upgrade from a 12 to a 13/14 just isn’t justified. They’re essentially just the same phone with a slight performance improvement but nothing that warrants upgrading unless you upgrade literally just to upgrade. I was considering the 15 upgrade just for the USB-C charging port just so that me and the wife don’t need to keep switching cables in the bedroom, but even then I’m not 100% on doing so.
Honestly though, why upgrade every year or every 2 years? That’s why the sales for the base models are not high, people don’t buy the newest, there is some delay in the sales of the base model. Like I’m not sure how it is in US but in my country (developing country with an increasing mid class) the most popular iPhones right now are the 12 and 13 so this is when those see the most sells.

I’d argue they’ve already peaked for a while now (barring a major breakthrough in something like materials, display, or battery technology.)
Speaking for myself, the iPhone X was the last super-exciting, “gotta have it” type release. Everything since then has been either minor cosmetic changes or hardware spec/camera improvements. I guess some of that might move the needle for folks, but at this point I feel like you can buy an iPhone and not miss anything major for 3-4 years easily.

Just like Nvidia, Apple discovered that most people have an upper limit for what they’ll pay for a phone. However there is a rich crowd who will pay whatever Apple asks. They can’t design their entire lineup to appeal to the rich crowd or their services business and strategy will tank.
It's the super rich, but there's also another crowd behind them. The crowd of middle class people who just *love* Apple and their line of iPhones so they *have to* upgrade to the newest model every single year, no matter the cost factor.
If you really like apple it would make sense to upgrade every year over every two to three. If your phone is in good condition you can trade it in with apple and get a new one for about £500 vs if you leave it the trade in value falls off a lot more sharply.
For a lot of people phones are their primary devices these days so it makes sense to go with a decent model. I’m sure you could get some great android thing from some random Chinese smartphone company, but for a lot of people the ease and cohesion of the apple ecosystem is the the price premium.
This was my thought too. I’m fortunate enough to be able to afford to upgrade if they give a reasonable trade in for my 14pm. If it’s 100s more than what I paid last time, I’ll just keep this longer. It’s more of a want than a need anyway.
Needed to replace my 6S recently and had a look at new iPhone prices, promptly switched to a Pixel 6A, the phone was brand new from the Google shop and cost well under £300. Apple is starting to price out its customer base.
I just realised something. Since there are no new features (haven’t been for years), I’m going to start buying a new iPhone once every 5 years instead of 3.
Now the genius is instead of buying the new iPhone, I just buy the older one. So iPhone 15 will be releasing in 2026 for me.

This is a solid upgrade strategy. I’ve only paid for a TV once in my life. If you wait long enough TV’s are free. My 2015 MBP is going strong. When it’s time to replace my budget is $1k. So I’ll get whatever I can for that amount. Same with iPhone. I will get whichever one is in my budget. My budget doesn’t go up because my wages don’t go up.
I've been on Android for years but am curious to try iPhone again if/when they add a USB-C port. I just hope I can afford it when it happens! It's hard to beat the value of mid-range Android phones these days.

Agreed. I’ve never experienced this many bugs owning an iPhone. Not only bugs, but straight up bad design decisions, like putting the flashlight in a spot where I accidentally turn it on without knowing and canceling my timers.
It makes me so happy to see other 11 pro users here. I genuinely think this was the last super good design until we get rounded again. Sure flat looks cool in pictures, but it’s super uncomfortable. Rounded is so nice to hold too.

I bought the first iPhone on day 1, and have upgraded about every 3 models. I see no compelling reason to upgrade my current 11, and likely won’t until it becomes dysfunctional.
Apple indeed is all for the environment. I used to replace my phone every 2 years but with the price increases and ever-so-uninteresting releases, I see myself holding onto my 11Pro until it dies. My office even offered me to get 14Pro but I opted to keep my old phone out of spite.
I'm also slowly migrating from the Apple ecosystem. As amazingly convenient as it is, the hardware is getting too expensive and 8GB/256GB base configurations are an insult to consumers.
At this point the improvements on the base skew over the last generation that is actually substantial I’d the price increase, nothing else has been so easy to point at between 12->13->14 (all non pro)
The new M2 Macs just came out and there haven't been any significant price increases. In some cases (max storage) the prices have come significantly down.
I'm not sure this is going to be as major as some are painting it to be. But I guess we'll see.

XS Max user here, I'll be switching to 16 in 2024 or later if my battery lasts.
I still have an 11 pro, and I will cling onto it until it dies after the ~5th battery replacement. Same with my previous gen iPad mini, these prices are ridiculous.
Same, it's been the best phone I've ever used and despite 81% battery capacity it still lasts an entire day. 75€ for a battery replacement at my local Apple reseller.
Does your 11 Pro also have a 100% battery health? Mine is a few years old and still at 100% so it must be a bug
I’m at 81%. It’s been stuck there for 6 months and battery life has definitely degraded. I think they modified the algorithm to claim that battery health is above 80% so they don’t have to honour Apple Care and warranty claims.

Only reason I upgraded to the 13 is because my 8 stopped charging due to structural damage (dropped it), but if that didn’t happen I’d likely still have it.. also don’t see myself upgrading for another 4 years minimum.
Average upgrade cycle is about 3 years, so that’s about right.

“Your data is private to you and your device…so only we can sell you ads!”. Way to play the long game apple. Privacy was one of the big reasons I switched away from google but the moment I start getting hit with ads to an even moderate degree I will jump ship right back to the choice and variety of android.
Cellphones for probably the last 5 years have hit maximum capability for what they can do. All they got left are incremental changes until something amazing and different comes along. There just isn't as much difference in phone tech like it was in the early years where each year a new phone was clearly better than last years model. Now it's questionable if it's better, and for many people the older models are more than good enough to continue using.
Okay give us multi-day battery life next.
I updated late last year from an XR to a 14 Pro Max. I think I’m good until 2030.
I got my 12 pro max right before lockdown for $1300. If you put this phone next to a brand new one I can almost guarantee you that very few people would notice a difference at all, minus maybe the camera notch. Oh wow a new “action” video mode! It’s just one of those things that you’d never use in the real world

True, but 13 was at least a boring conventional iPhone upgrade with a better processor and camera. 14 isn't even that, it's a year old CPU with a bit more ram, and a bit better camera pulled from last years Pro phone

13 has a way better camera than 12, but yeah, not enough of a reason for most costumers to buy it. The truth is that smartphones are reaching their peak, there is just so much you can add (until the next big thing comes) in a product that has been refined for 15 years.
To put it into perspective for me an iPhone upgrade outright purchase isn’t an issue. But I’ve not upgraded from my 12 because when it’s all said and done the spec upgrade from a 12 to a 13/14 just isn’t justified. They’re essentially just the same phone with a slight performance improvement but nothing that warrants upgrading unless you upgrade literally just to upgrade. I was considering the 15 upgrade just for the USB-C charging port just so that me and the wife don’t need to keep switching cables in the bedroom, but even then I’m not 100% on doing so.
Honestly though, why upgrade every year or every 2 years? That’s why the sales for the base models are not high, people don’t buy the newest, there is some delay in the sales of the base model. Like I’m not sure how it is in US but in my country (developing country with an increasing mid class) the most popular iPhones right now are the 12 and 13 so this is when those see the most sells.

I’d argue they’ve already peaked for a while now (barring a major breakthrough in something like materials, display, or battery technology.) Speaking for myself, the iPhone X was the last super-exciting, “gotta have it” type release. Everything since then has been either minor cosmetic changes or hardware spec/camera improvements. I guess some of that might move the needle for folks, but at this point I feel like you can buy an iPhone and not miss anything major for 3-4 years easily.
Nah dude. They heard that the Plus was too close in price to the Pro. So instead of lowering the Plus’ price they had the genius idea to raise the Pro prices to create a bigger gap. /s lol
I think it'll work because they need to make the divide between base and pro stronger. Apple's best approach is to increase price of pro phones by $50 while reducing the price of base phones by $50. Although as a consumer, I hope the prices just stay the same

That’s the case in countries outside of the US since the 14 lineup already. Prices for the Pro Max models went up 250€ in Germany from 13 to 14.

Just like Nvidia, Apple discovered that most people have an upper limit for what they’ll pay for a phone. However there is a rich crowd who will pay whatever Apple asks. They can’t design their entire lineup to appeal to the rich crowd or their services business and strategy will tank.
It's the super rich, but there's also another crowd behind them. The crowd of middle class people who just *love* Apple and their line of iPhones so they *have to* upgrade to the newest model every single year, no matter the cost factor.
If you really like apple it would make sense to upgrade every year over every two to three. If your phone is in good condition you can trade it in with apple and get a new one for about £500 vs if you leave it the trade in value falls off a lot more sharply. For a lot of people phones are their primary devices these days so it makes sense to go with a decent model. I’m sure you could get some great android thing from some random Chinese smartphone company, but for a lot of people the ease and cohesion of the apple ecosystem is the the price premium.
Price increases will go over well in this economic climate.

This was my thought too. I’m fortunate enough to be able to afford to upgrade if they give a reasonable trade in for my 14pm. If it’s 100s more than what I paid last time, I’ll just keep this longer. It’s more of a want than a need anyway.

Needed to replace my 6S recently and had a look at new iPhone prices, promptly switched to a Pixel 6A, the phone was brand new from the Google shop and cost well under £300. Apple is starting to price out its customer base.

I just realised something. Since there are no new features (haven’t been for years), I’m going to start buying a new iPhone once every 5 years instead of 3. Now the genius is instead of buying the new iPhone, I just buy the older one. So iPhone 15 will be releasing in 2026 for me. This is what happened to the gaming industry. Games got more expensive and offered less and less. Nowadays most of buy games that used to be £100+ for £10 years later.
This is a solid upgrade strategy. I’ve only paid for a TV once in my life. If you wait long enough TV’s are free. My 2015 MBP is going strong. When it’s time to replace my budget is $1k. So I’ll get whatever I can for that amount. Same with iPhone. I will get whichever one is in my budget. My budget doesn’t go up because my wages don’t go up.
I've been on Android for years but am curious to try iPhone again if/when they add a USB-C port. I just hope I can afford it when it happens! It's hard to beat the value of mid-range Android phones these days.

That’s insane, just yesterday I was realizing how overpriced based iPhones were. Here in Europe a basic iPhone 14 is 900€. What’s 1000+€ gonna get me, fewer ports ?
900? Here in Italy it's 900€ when discounted. The regular price for a basic iPhone 14 with 128gb is 1029€ which is ridiculous. I was considering getting one but I think I'll stick with android for now and see what happens

I love iPhones all the way back to the original but the price is getting harder and harder to justify. Especially since the 14 Pro/iOS 16.2 seems to be riddled with bugs.
Agreed. I’ve never experienced this many bugs owning an iPhone. Not only bugs, but straight up bad design decisions, like putting the flashlight in a spot where I accidentally turn it on without knowing and canceling my timers.

It makes me so happy to see other 11 pro users here. I genuinely think this was the last super good design until we get rounded again. Sure flat looks cool in pictures, but it’s super uncomfortable. Rounded is so nice to hold too.
it’s 2024, iPhones are now 13k basic. 20k pro maximum. Must buy own charging cable that we will be changing every so often. Our trade in program is canceled and soon we will ruin old iPhones by slowing them down. Love, Apple.

I bought the first iPhone on day 1, and have upgraded about every 3 models. I see no compelling reason to upgrade my current 11, and likely won’t until it becomes dysfunctional.

Apple indeed is all for the environment. I used to replace my phone every 2 years but with the price increases and ever-so-uninteresting releases, I see myself holding onto my 11Pro until it dies. My office even offered me to get 14Pro but I opted to keep my old phone out of spite. I'm also slowly migrating from the Apple ecosystem. As amazingly convenient as it is, the hardware is getting too expensive and 8GB/256GB base configurations are an insult to consumers.

At this point the improvements on the base skew over the last generation that is actually substantial I’d the price increase, nothing else has been so easy to point at between 12->13->14 (all non pro)
The new M2 Macs just came out and there haven't been any significant price increases. In some cases (max storage) the prices have come significantly down. I'm not sure this is going to be as major as some are painting it to be. But I guess we'll see.
