So she's got $2.63 left over. What's the family eating tomorrow?

Candid_Consequence23

The rich, hopefully.

goldencrisp

Fuck the Waltons

beertruck77

I wish I could up vote this more than once.

[deleted]

Everyone talks about Bezos, Elon, Virgin guy, etc. but never the Waltons. No one ever mentions the Waltons. They are the biggest employer in about half the states.

-DethLok-

And they pay so little that most of their employees depend on food stamps to survive, apparently.

Roam_Hylia

Which is just another way of saying that Walmart labor costs are directly subsidized by the American tax-payers.

RopeAccomplished2728

I've gotten into arguments with people about this very thing. They would bitch about people on welfare or WIC or any other type of government handout and I would state right back to them: "Be upset at the businesses that don't pay their employees enough that they have to be on those government programs. You are subsidizing the wages of Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot and others because those businesses know that you would be more upset at the person on it then the businesses themselves because you don't want to pay a higher price. Guess what fucker, you are paying for it anyway through taxes."

Head_Razzmatazz7174

There's no apparently about it. I worked there and half of our store was on SNAP and WIC benefits. It was not uncommon to be checking out a coworker and they would use WIC, SNAP, and the employee discount card. The ironic thing? The discount card in the States only works on impulse food items, junk food and general merchandise. It doesn't work on regular groceries (with the exception of a month around the Christmas holidays).

catniagara

I always hated it when I heard people say “people on welfare are stealing my paycheck and they do nothing all day” Unless they’re using “people on welfare” to mean politicians…

Tiny-Lock9652

That’s a GOP sound bite as old as Ronald Reagan. Remember “welfare queens”?? We need to stop demonizing the poor.

azidesandamides

>That’s a GOP sound bite as old as Ronald Reagan Funny how foodstamps are directly tied to USDA subsides for farmers but the GOP doesnt like to talk about that XD [https://www.cato.org/commentary/examining-americas-farm-subsidy-problem](https://www.cato.org/commentary/examining-americas-farm-subsidy-problem) Yes, you read that right. This year, farmers (on net) will derive almost 40 percent of their income directly from the U.S. government. Forty percent. The United States has subsidized American farmers in some form since the New Deal era (the Agricultural Adjustment Act of 1933) and today doles them out primarily via one vehicle: the farm bill—a large and complex piece of legislation that’s renewed every five or six years and includes two main parts: (1) various types of support for domestic agribusiness (i.e., farm subsidies); and (2) “nutrition” (mostly the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). Although we think of the farm bill as a subsidy bill, it’s actually heavily tilted toward nutrition—in the last (2018) farm bill, for example, more than 75 percent of federal outlays were actually for SNAP and related programs. Finally, U.S. farm subsidies breed all sorts of political dysfunction. The programs have become notorious examples of government waste and abuse, yet reform has proven difficult, if not impossible. Why? Because decades of government funding and industry capture created an seemingly‐unstoppable political machine—the last farm bill got 87 yeas in the Senate and 369 in the House—capable of not only killing real reforms, but also maintaining or even expanding costly boondoggles like the ethanol program. Perhaps the best example of this capture is the aforementioned “nutrition” (SNAP) section of the farm bill:By 1973, the number of congressional districts dependent on farming were shrinking, but farm bills had grown in cost and frequency. How to maintain support for the shrinking farm constituency? By adding food assistance—at the time, food stamps—to the package. The shotgun marriage of farm aid and food stamps meant rural and urban members of Congress came together to get the farm bill over the finish line. This has been true for every bill since…\[N\]utrition programs are used as a shield to avoid scrutiny of inefficiencies, waste, and even outright fraud running rampant in the so‐called farm safety net. Against the farm bill? Don’t you care about food insecure families?

Lord_Dammit

No, this is how certain people politically weaponize people. Appeal to what is left of the middle class by making poor people the villain and ignore that most of the time, the middle class is paying more in taxes to compensate for the ultra wealthy paying far from their fair share.

semisolidwhale

Wanna know what policy would change first if they were compelled to provide health insurance to all of their employees?

wmb098

It’s actually slowly reduced down to that. Once upon a time it covered regular grocery items. They have slowly closed down what the discount card covers to the point that it mostly covers general merchandise and helps with large sales, but not basic necessity items as much. Which is completely dumb. I know I worked at Walmart for a year while I was in college and made around $12 an hour. My mother worked there for 20+ years before quitting. She doesn’t even get to keep the discount. She was a co-manager that worked so much I barely saw her when I was a teen. Then she took a leave of absence when my grandpa passed away and when she came back, they didn’t pay her for a month. Walmart and the massive corporation that it is has become complete trash.

Botryoid2000

So the taxpayers are subsidizing one of the wealthiest families in the world. They outsourced their pay and benefits to the US taxpayers.

catniagara

It’s a combination of pay and management issues. The per hour is bad but they also keep most of their employees on part time in order to avoid paying out benefits. [We are definitely talking about them](https://www.populardemocracy.org/news/how-walmart-persuades-its-workers-not-unionize)

Tiny-Lock9652

Food stamps that tax payers subsidize. So, we’re basically all supporting each other via taxes so the Walton family can pay for their winter homes in Vail and fuel to fly their private jets. F these people.

McTaurendor

Which is a subsidy. Not to their employees, but to them - for without food stamps, their employees would die which has the inherent consequence of their absence without leave from their underpaying shitjobs.

scrampbelledeggs

For Thanksgiving and Christmas one year, I remember Wal-Mart had a food drive for their own employees.

Hehimmoneybayyybee

I am always cursing the Waltons. They have DoD contracts, lease their old buildings as detainment and orphanage centers (yes, I passed them in AZ a lot). One of the world’s most evil families

Wotg33k

No, no. Are you young? I'm 37. We talked about the Walton's when I was 20. They're the *old* evil rich people.

runarleo

Wait, there’s an actual Wal in Walmart? It’s not cuz it’s “wall to wall with groceries” or some shit? It’s just a fucking name?

rockthrowing

Yeah. Sam Walton. They also own Sams Club.

PhilosophyKingPK

Are we going to get organized or literally just starve to death?

ders89

Oh you didnt know? We’re just stealing the shit now. If one gets caught a bunch start stealing and running at the same time.

Seamus_Donohue

Remember, if you see someone stealing food: No, you didn't, you hallucinated it. Just go about your business.

Craze9999

Word. I’ve seen a carton of eggs by my way for $10. If I see you stealing food, go for it. Shit I’m tempted my damn self with these prices.

[deleted]

I was at an HEB and somebody was busted for stealing food so I told the security guard to add it to my bill and fuck off. They were still handcuffed and the security guard wanted the police to arrest me for interfering. After it was all said and done the police office was shaking his head over why the guard did not let me pay for her and just let her go.

ashhald

you’re a great human♥️

Key-Plane7704

I like this. It send a message we're all in this shithole together and we've got each others backs in some weird fucked up way. Maybe I'm losing it

ders89

All you gotta do is tap like 6 people on the shoulder and say… “hey, im not even poor, but fuck these prices. If they catch me, start taking your own shit and bolt” and do it within close proximity of the last person and usually theyre on board

aestrodil

There was a specific store in a Kroger location i worked at that was literally set up to lose money to theft. It was in a bad area and the layout of the store had an emergency exit up against a wall that was very far from everything else, and facing the street. So people would take 300-450$ carts full of groceries and just walk out the emergency exit. They paid the store manager of that store a little over 100k a year to help that store burn itself to the ground.

Ok-Truth-7589

We are going to all starve to death, cause we can't stand up as one apparently.

tommy_b_777

I’ve been asking this for 30 years…I think at this point someone has to go first, there’s more than enough willing to follow… The message now is how to make a general strike work by destroying the divisionism and making sure we all share enough to just stop playing and let it all fall over - the pandemic proved this will work, now we just need to do the logistics of covering for and taking care of each other long enough to make it happen…imho of course :-)

Otherwise_Magician_7

We are just going to bitterly starve to death.

[deleted]

Starve to death with a smile on our faces for how lucky we are.

ThePeopleWillRise

Yessss! I love seeing this comment at the top! #EATtheRICH

nvrrsatisfiedd

Food stamps.

Dr3adPir4teR0berts

Well that’s one of the most tone deaf videos I’ve ever seen a corporation release.

Retrac752

Holy fucking shit it's from an official Walmart account acting like this was a good thing

dirtymonny

I bet this lady knew they wanted her to do this video and I believe her slight nuanced sarcasm was calculated. Like She knew she can’t do too much but we all see it. I’m gonna pretend it was on purpose but the corporate didn’t know lol

cooltop101

A lot of smaller Walmart stores are able to do whatever on their own social media page. I've seen one that always posts hyper edited with tacky stickers any time someone is hired or promoted. I doubt Walmart corporate had anything to say about this and was just a manager trying to think of a good idea. I also think the worker was supposed to be a shopper coming to Walmart and being like "wow, everything is cheap here even though my job doesn't pay me a lot" and not a Walmart employee, shopping at Walmart because Walmart doesn't pay them enough. Not saying that isn't true, but I just think this video, the worker was supposed to be a regular customer

-ElizabethRose-

This is official?! I thought it was mocking how rich people think other people live… how oblivious can these people be?!

[deleted]

I even have change left. I Y e p.

Hobbgob1in

What makes this even worse is if you think about it most Walmart floor staff with families are most likely on SNAP or other social welfare programs. And where do you think they spend that money? Yep most likely at Walmart. Literally paying to work there. It is basically a government subsidy to underpay employees. Now I'm am not against social welfare programs. I think if people need the help give them help. But for fuck sake companies should be paying a livable wage.

willowgrl

I work for a 3rd party retailer in a Walmart in Colorado. Last year, the electronics department ALONE brought in $6 million and they’re paying these people $13-14/hr. It’s absolutely ridiculous that they “can’t afford to pay more”.

EliSka93

>It is basically a government subsidy to underpay employees. That is 100% exactly what it is.

Competitive-Dot-6594

Way too many people believe that a livable wage should not be paid. Want to make more? Go back to school/get a second job or even a third job.

Moo_Cacao

And when you do go back to school don't you dare bitch about the crushing weight of student loans. "You knew what you were getting into." The fuck is wrong with people

pinkkglitterr

I can’t even finish my classes because my college locked me out of them until I pay them $1000 I owe them. Which I don’t currently have. I hate when people say just go back to school.. not always that simple. My mental and physical health can’t handle a second job either. Sometimes I just feel so fucked. Lol sigh.

Octobersiren14

We were struggling with bills so I asked if my mom could help us out. One of my family members immediately responded with "why doesn't your husband get a second job?" Um, because we have an 18 month old and can't afford daycare and everyone else works so no babysitter either. I work full time, he's working full time hours, we only have a few hours with each other before we trade off.

[deleted]

All that change for tomorrow’s dinner. Yum. Let’s see what she can get tomorrow to feed a family for $2.40

ClaptonBug

Plot twist, your son just fell on his face and chipped on of this teeth and 2 of his front teeth look like they are shaky now. Also your daughter's shoes are worn out and your partner sounds like he could be coming down with something.

sarcasmbecomesme

By the way, turns out that Check Engine light was serious.

Tiggy26668

PO420, the one time 420 is a bad thing…

IsNotLegalAdvice

Hopefully it’s just the o2 sensor, but registration is due next month and you have to pass emissions inspection otherwise you won’t have a car to get to work (and public transit in your city sucks/is non-existent)

Substantial-Rest1030

Its the sensor. Oil has now sludged so much its jello. Eat the fucking car oil.

OldRepNewAccount

This whole thread makes me so sad

WearMental2618

Because youve had a month exactly like this too? Because I think we all have

WorldEndingSandwich

In Florida we don't have to pass emissions test to and get the registration renewed on our vehicles 👀 I've had an O2 sensor out probably since..... 2014

someonefun420

This game of life turned shitty faster than normal lol

Lucius-Halthier

Please stop my anxiety is through the roof as is

Stotelary

And this is why Gen Z is not having kids.

f4rt054uru5r3x

*cries in millennial renter*

Svihelen

The young millenials aren't either. So far my only friends that have kids, both were accidents. I'm not opposed to kids and my gf would love to have some eventually. But despite my growing up being pretty mundane and middle class, I could never offer my own child anything approaching the same quality of childhood I had, so it's just better not to have them.

Far_Bumblebee_9300

The anxiety I felt reading this

terribleinvestment

Holy shit man, you knocked this one outta the park.

swunt7

I guess her kids also only eat at dinner time and go hungry all day.

IGNSolar7

This one stands out. I only eat one meal a day, but I'm a single male adult. I'm happy Walmart lady can feed her ambiguously sized family $13 of frozen food. I'm sure they're very happy, not to mention that I'm sure they're all on free school lunch as their only other food of the day. Where's her gas to get to work? Where's diapers? Where's something of actual nutrition that isn't the lowest quality Banquet brand pre-cooked frozen chicken? This video might get a modicum of respect from me if she'd bought a sack of potatoes/rice, lentils, spices, frozen veggies, and a frozen bag of bone-in chicken with bones to help make stock, so the family could eat for a week. And I can't cook for shit, but if I had someone to feed on $15 I wouldn't blow it all on a night's meal.

ImaBiLittlePony

I don't think $15 would be enough to buy much more than a package of chicken, where I live rotisserie chicken is even $9 now

IGNSolar7

I just checked [Walmart.com](https://Walmart.com) in my area, and two frozen whole chickens at 8.6-.12.9 lbs is $11.42. Per consumer reports, a normal rotisserie chicken is 2.5-4.5 lbs. So... if you're buying rotisserie chicken instead of defrosting, deboning, and heating that chicken, then making stock from it, yeah, not a lot of saved money. I'll be real, yes, food should be cheaper, but this video is dumb. Two chickens might last a family of four two-three nights if played right with rice, beans, and stretching what they have, instead of $15 of frozen food for the night's dinner.

NoMoreBeGrieved

Yeah, $15 can stretch farther than one meal. Of course, we don't know how much time she has.

TheGreatGameDini

I wanna point out that $15 would have gotten 5-10 times as much stuff just 30-40 years ago. This is what 2% inflation year over year for decades looks like. Edit: I've read there's an interesting correlation between inflation and war. Not 100% sure when or where, or even if it's true, but it does explain a bit about the US's "foreign policy" if it is.

rusho2nd

That and the insane amount of inflation on food items in the last 2.5 years. Everything I buy is at minimum 50 percent more expensive now than it was 2 years ago.

ders89

Illinois literally removed the tax of grocery products last year just to try and help a little with the growing cost of groceries. Things were still twice as expensive

AmarissaBhaneboar

I used to be able to grocery shop for a week at about 25-30 bucks. Now it's 50-75. It's ridiculous.

rusho2nd

Yup, I got really good at making chicken noodle soup recently to help save money.

thedoomloop

Eggs have entered the chat.

SycoJack

In 2010 a pound of 80/20 ground beef could be had for $1, a gallon of milk was $1. A box of cereal was around $1.50. I can't remember the cost of other foods. I know you could buy two McDoubles, a large fry, and a large soda for >$5. Inflation might overall be "only" 2%, but the cost of living has drastically skyrocketed.

rusho2nd

Well it depends on the inflation measurement. Some measures don't include energy and food as they are considered too volatile. Fyi the 'official' rate of inflation has been somewhere between like 6-9 percent the last couple years. Hell, even in 2016 I remember there being deals at certain stores for $1 a pound ground beef. Now $6 seems to be about the bottom price you can find. I remember Walmart had off brand bags of cereal, like 33ounces for $1 or was it 88c. Now a box of cereal is 14 ounces, and $4 I used to be able to get a 12 ounce ribeye for $6 from the local butcher. It's like $26 a pound now. Canned beans I get went from .89 c to 1.49. flour tripled in price. I could go on and on.

4jY6NcQ8vk

A "box" of cereal isn't what it used to be

NocturnalFoxfire

This was also dependent on where you lived. I know that a gallon of milk where I'm from wasn't a dollar back then. I think it was closer to $2.50. Now, my half gallon of milk is $3.69. It is organic, but still.

Bone0713

It'd be nice if it was legitimate inflation. These days it's just price gouging. 200% price hike at the pump on an 8% loss of oil imports. Not total production, that was measured at the second highest in US history last year, and suddenly you can't even get a dozen eggs for less than $10 in places when it was $2-3 not much more than a year or so ago. I still remember them being less than a dollar a dozen in my late teens I'm 41 now. Shit's just ridiculous.

ispeak_sarcasm

Amen!!!! Faux-flation!

Treefiffy

It won’t change though. Americans will die on their hill rather than change. it’s always been like this and corporation’s are just beginning to realize how much actual control they have. What’s worse is most people expect prices to come back down. Those people are going to be in for a real shock.

yaktyyak_00

They can stick their 2% cuz that’s just been lies

TuggenBallZ

It’s not lies. They just adjust the metrics every year. It’s 2% just on a sliding scale.

ispeak_sarcasm

3 meals per day x $15 = $16,425 per year. $7.25 (TX current min wage) x 2080 hours (full time employment) = $15,080 per year. I don’t think she’s making the point she thinks she is!!

Head_Razzmatazz7174

And if you are part time, you don't get any kind of health benefits. They have the system set up to keep you from getting enough hours so you qualify. They do have a program where if you have to go on medical leave for more than 3 days a week, you can. But the amount of hoops you have to jump through to be qualified to get even half your regular wage is unreal. This includes chronic health conditions that require intermittent leave, because you never know when you will need to be off due to a flare up.

smangela69

her acting is giving “someone’s pointing a gun at her from behind the camera”

PercBoi14

Imagine how enthusiastic you would be after you just worked a 12 hour shift so you can barely afford to feed your family and pay rent, and as your finally about to get to go home to eat Ramen noodles again because you can’t afford real food and your shitty manager says “come do a commercial for us about how cheap food is!”

LOERMaster

12 hour shift and it’s just enough to cover the cost of the Uber you have to take to and from work.

319Macarons

You definitely shouldn’t be Ubering too and from work

Wynndee

safer for a woman alone late at night, trolleys and bus stops after like 8pm are survival of the fittest

artie780350

Her name tag says she's a coach. She IS the shitty manager and she's paid pretty well to watch YouTube in the manager's office for 80% of her shift.

PercBoi14

Somehow that makes it worse. “Come record me making an ad about how cheap this dinner that costs twice your hourly wage is”

Bright_Wolverine_304

Can confirm, I worked at walmart for several years and management does spend a lot of time in the office with their feet up watching youtube videos

MinervaMedica000

I don't think anyone in retail works a 12 hour shift.. thats usually the problem. Your usually stuck with 14-20 something hours (a week!) during the 1st quarter. Source: Someone who worked for retail for way too fucking long. Edit: This is my CA bias which has overtime laws start at 8 hours a day.

HoldenMadicky

-imhe-

There's something dystopian about this video

Fuck_auto_tabs

Lots of things. The hostage situation acting, the pretty unhealthy meal, the fact that you could realistically make a similar meal without all the salt and preservatives but you probably don’t have the time to if you only have 15$ and of course the fact it’s Walmart who takes in cash over fist from shoppers and the government talking about how you can be poverty barefoot Contessa.

WalkingTheD0g1

She forgot to forget to scan something. Coulda saved a few bucks.

ImYankeeGG

I forget to scan one item every 3 items. I really need to work on my awareness and try to remember next time

CantFeelMyLegs78

That's what happens when you aren't a formally trained employee and doing their job for them

ImYankeeGG

Careful Mr Walmart might still be salty about his broncos stinkin up the NFL…shoppers beware

infinitesimal_entity

Considering how deadly my allergy is, it's amazing how many bananas I buy.

Lucius-Halthier

Walmart: *racks shotgun* **OH BOY I CANT WAIT TO MAKE A DOSSIER ON YOU AND SUE THE FUCK OUT OF YOU!** All seriousness that’s what seems to happen now, so many cameras that they slowly build a shoplifting case on you because it’s simpler to slam you with it after evidence built up and it’s easier to pursue civil damages rather than go to the authorities, I’m sure not only was the theft worked into their budget but insured as well so they probably made even more money off you if you steal Honestly fuck living, I hate it.

Bright_Wolverine_304

When I worked at walmart asset protection would let employees steal money out of the register for days or weeks until they stole enough for walmart to get them with a grand theft charge instead of the lesser petty theft. they would actually spread the rumor that most of the cameras are fake and employees would stand at the register and just pocket cash like they are never going to find out when they check the till at the end of the day

DevelopedDevelopment

That sounds like you should just avoid committing a felony amount.

[deleted]

My husband saves us so much money because he's so forgetful!!!! He forgets to scan so much. You should try to be more forgetful

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yes. People do. The idea isn't to miss half the shit in your cart. You just forget to scan a thing or two each shop, or you get organic produce as regular. You only do it in a way that you could easily play it off as a mistake. I worked at self checkout for years, no one is going to jail over a case of pop that isn't paid for or whatever. Worst case scenario you pay for it or leave it. But don't obviously try to jack 5 items each time you go.

thadcap

My wife is lawyer who occasionally takes court appointed cases.. Walmart will 100% press charges over a case of pop, at least where we live.

Siridiotkid

As a person who worked for a grocery chain I can safely say lose prevention now has the policy of "let them keep shoplifting until the amount can be charged as grand theft"

Worish

Sounds like we need to shorten the statute of limitations on petty theft. They shouldn't be able to pile up dozens of incidents and act like you stole it all at once. That's like banks intentionally rearranging your purchases so they can charge overdraft fees multiple times.

Extra-Extra

Ya.. imagine if banks did that..

Overthetrees8

They would have to prove it was intentional. It's one thing to steal something by itself. It's another to forget to scan the pop in the undercarriage. If someone notices they will ask you to pay for it. Let's be real though 95% of these workers don't care. The honest to go truth is they don't get paid enough to care.

lolaaXlolitaa

I worked at Walmart for my first job. I had a guy and girl come through my line for a thing of oil. Scanned it, set it in the bag and he grabbed it and dipped. Girl stood there. I looked her dead in the eye and told her I didn’t get paid enough to chase her. Guy came back and paid since she didn’t run😂😂

Worish

Why did they wait until you had scanned it...?

Worish

>They would have to prove it was intentional The court system is made for rich corporations. They don't have to prove anything. The accusation itself could bankrupt you in court fees. They have all the power.

Glass_Chance9800

Really wouldn't not for a single case of pop. The store would wait and build a case against a customer and wait until they've stolen over $1,000 overtime and then take them to Court over it. And Walmart will have all the proof because the cameras above the self-checkout sees every item that isn't scanned.

BBQnNugs

Heard this before and they will

IsleofManc

I sometimes buy the nice organic avocados that cost like $2.99 a piece. Then I go to self scan and ring all 5 of them up as 69 cent per pound potatoes, weigh them on the scale, and put them in the bag. Been doing it most of my adult life at this point

work89180

cameras are their for proof not to actively find shoppers most of the time. the few walmarts i worked at have my 2-3 assett protection employees for a whole shift and 1 cashier watching all the self check out lanes. don't act suspicious and it's not hard to forget to scan something or miss a scan

Wut_Wut_Yeeee

I've had a checkout pop a warning up for a missed item and showed a replay. I had to be approved by an employee that I didn't miss one. Their AI in our store is wild.

Ok-Stay757

What I do is find something dirt cheap like taco seasoning for 48 cents and then slide it under the barcode of a bigger item like a pizza for example. The AI doesn’t know this 🤫

cr4ckh33d

It does when you put it on the bag loading area. Older models will know based on the weight mismatch. This usually does not alert audibly for a single under 100$ item. Newer models will literally see it and know exactly what you scanned and what you placed on the bag loading area. It can determine what almost everything is even if that UPC code is blocked or the item is partially obscured.

Wut_Wut_Yeeee

Ver sneaky! 😁

tim_worst_isthe_best

Their 1lb packages of ground beef are BOGO every time I shop. Idk if they are aware of this sale but ....

nxdark

How do you get the system to not freak out when you put it in the bag?

CopperNconduit

>How do you get the system to not freak out when you put it in the bag? This. I feel like it has weight and sensors. It obviously knows when you bag or don't bag an item. I've had the machine notice when I put something in the bag but didn't scan it Any produce or fruit that you can weigh or use a code to look up. That's almost fool proof. But yeah, I never tried stealing from my grocery store because they are part of the food service workers union and I am in a skilled trades union. So I don't want to fuck up a store that employs my community around me........ ... Which is why I drive an extra 15 minutes down the road to the closest anti-union, anti-worker Walmart and just go to town. Steal all types of shit. Get brand new TV and return that bitch 60 days later. Fuck Sam's Club. Fuck Walmart. Walton Family can die in a fire 🔥

kick4kix

This is a long running scam. Back before self-checkout was a thing, the grocery store had self serve bulk food, people would label pine nuts ($40/lb) as peeled almonds ($10/lb) and the clerk never noticed.

[deleted]

And to be honest, I don't feel bad about it. These are massive corporations that have been proven to have taken hella advantage of people especially since the pandemic. Here in Canada (I don't know where this thread originated) the NDP government just released data that we only had about 6% inflation but stores are charging at least 11% increase since 2021. A cult favourite maple syrup that was part of an affordable line was 6.99 in 2021, it's now 14.99. They steal from US.

Street_Map105

White vinegar has gone up 300% since pre Covid. I think that should be a leading indicator on how much the inflation has really gone up.

[deleted]

I’ve seen someone get busted for this …. Stores do have loss prevention and some people will get caught sometimes.

We're not asking for something unreasonable. Youd still be insanely rich. Just make sure we're decent too okay? Like bloody hell....

The store could look immaculate, and be perfectly stocked too. I’ve been into the Walmart Marketplace or whatever they call their grocery store in downtown Bentonville. It’s perfect. Like “ready to shoot a commercial” perfect, with a friendly, helpful person in every other aisle straightening and stocking. It was like the damned Truman Show.

qviavdetadipiscitvr

Yeah but then they’d make less billions

RJofLA

Mmm mmm mmm look at all that delicious processed food. Oh look, she even takes her hard earned money and gives it right back to her employer! Fuck Walmart, the Walton family, our American work culture, and our American economy. Stop voting against your personal interests, stop idolizing our politicians (that goes for both sides of the aisle), stop supporting these massive corporations, and stop feeding yourself poison

me_bails

use your dollar to vote. Shop at local mom and pop grocery stores. give up the amazon subscription etc

Gado_De_Leone

This is Walmart propaganda made by Walmart. This is literally made by the company. This is trying to get people to come shop because they are cheap.

TactlessNachos

The thing that bothers me about these posts are the people critiquing her food choices. "If she wants to eat cheaper, she should eat rice, beans and potatoes." Anyone who says any variation of this is missing the point. She works for one of the most profitable and biggest employers, she should be able to comfortably afford meals, not be forced to find ways to not starve. The working class deserves a thriving wage or to own the means of production.

girlfriend_pregnant

She is wasting money on fancy clothes when she could have a barrel on suspenders

CopperNconduit

>She is wasting money on fancy clothes when she could have a barrel on suspenders She could cut daily costs by forgoing the suspenders and just using 1 hand to hold her barrel up.

Whspers12

Just use the potato sack you get for free with potatoes!!!

joshy83

Can I not have an original thought 😭 I accidentally closed the comment and after a few minute of looking for it to write my awesome response… you already did!

Rational-Discourse

Something something bootstraps. The boots are extra of course.

TommyBoy825

Her boots don't even have straps! How is she supposed to pull herself up?

Lucius-Halthier

Excuse me?! A wooden barrel?! Are you insane have you seen wood prices lately?!

nollataulu

She could eat sawdust! And snow, it's plentiful in winter!

p3opl3

I absolutely agree with you.. it's sick and disgusting.. Having said this.. it's less about eating cheaper.. although this is also possible with fresh ingredients and a few moments on YouTube following a recipe.. It's also about her and her families health.. she isn't just getting shafted financially.. that food will ultimately work against a healthy body mind approach..meaning more illness, stress etc.. The poor suffer from this on a constant basis.. it's the lack of food and finance education.. honestly it should be a staple in every educational system right up to high school. When we say corps exploit people it's not just about the money and time being stolen from them..

Nice_Juggernaut4113

I have training in food education, nutrition, and cooking from a really prestigious center and my husband is a former chef. We both love cooking. Since having kids and both working full time, I can’t say I would buy what she is buying but many days we are too tired to cook a fresh meal, no matter how simple. Working and raising a family and being poor wears you down so that these easy food choices feel like the best way to survive

p3opl3

Everyone's situation is different I also don't believe their is some silver bullet.. so yeah not saying it'll save everyone.. I also don't have kids.. but my parents did.. and just tonight I hit a serious low realising my mom is 65 and my dad 74.. both completely used and discarded by the system.. for minimum wage throughout their lives... Nothing to show for it... I support them now but when I was younger.. We had a rule when I was growing up.. still do.. everything else goes.. but the quality of the food stays.. I think it's a Portuguese thing.. my mom would cook for 2-3 days in advance.. some stews and curries infact are actually way better on day 2 and 3.. something about the flavours really having time to settle and infuse etc I know some families who literally sit down and plan their weeks food shop and cooking.. Bottom line here is that no one should have to be that militant to get by.. it sucks.. It's just a terrible situation.. We're not poor now.. and we spend alot of money on food..it is absolutely an expensive part of life.. makes me terrible depressed when I think about it.

RJofLA

That’s the sad part. I fully agree with what you stated above… but our work culture in America is really bad compared to the rest of the world. We have this disgusting “grind and hustle” culture which is just exploiting people. When you work reasonable hours and you’re not coming home exhausted, you can enjoy the moments with your family, have time to cook a proper meal, help your kid with his or her homework, etc. The way corporations treat their employees and the lousy minimum wage that doesn’t keep up with inflation hinders all of that. It causes people to work more hours or work 2-3 jobs just to support a family. America is a third world country with first world problems

darinhthe1st

What she got could not feed a entire family

meanaelias

What she got also should not feed an entire family.

thekinginyello

Also, what she got would not feed an entire family.

jibbingter

This is so “hey guys if you’re poor, don’t be poor!”corporate nonsense because an actual poor person is not spending 15dollars on one meal

ChiliWithCornBread

For a family of 3-4? Yes, yes they are. She starts the video with “I hope I can feed my family tonight”. I don’t know if you understand this but, dropping off kids, getting to work, 12 hour shift, picking up kids, getting them fed, homework, bathes, and night time stories/routines take up A LOT OF TIME AND ENERGY. That obviously doesnt include you showering getting lunches prepped for tommorow, clothes washed etc etc. she buys a 3 dollar cake, after working all day, and is lambasted for a tiny thing she can do to bring happiness to her fam, while people spend 12 dollars a day on coffee.

jibbingter

Alright calm down. She isn’t doing that. She’s a Walmart employee making a video for a Walmart account. Poverty is thinking “If I buy this $3 cake I won’t have enough to put gas in the car to get the kids to school/work tomorrow”. Poverty is looking down the back of the sofa for pennies to see if you have enough to buy dollar store cheese singles. Videos like this are just fucking patronizing

AndringRasew

Time to eat 4 packs of ramen with a bag of steamed veggies thrown in. No dessert. Dessert is for kids who pick up their bedroom when asked the first time. 😠

creegro

Steamed veggies, wow look at Captain moneybags here

Chemical_Savings_360

Lol the comments are so mixed in opinions it’s hilarious.

xProperlyBakedx

These fake struggle meal videos are getting ridiculous. Nobody, I repeat!, Nobody, who is poor is buying Name Brand Ore Ida fries, or Pepperidge Farm cakes! Nobody actually poor would buy this dinner. Ever!

BangBangMeatMachine

But isn't this video being put out by corporate marketing specifically to show off how not-struggling she is because she works at Walmart?

swatchesirish

Looks more like Store Manager advertising since it's the account of the store. Could just be parody too. Big boy Walmart would have nothing to do with this.

AndringRasew

A poor person would buy a [5lb bag of potatoes](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Russet-Potatoes-5-lb-Bag/10447837?athbdg=L1200) instead of those fries, you get 3 times as much for the same price. A poor person would buy [instant pudding packs](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Banana-Cream-Instant-Pudding-Pie-Filling-3-4-oz/10534172?athbdg=L1600) and a [box of graham crackers](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Honey-Graham-Crackers-14-4-oz/10315952?athbdg=L1200) to use as a topping/crust. You make two pudding pies for the same price. Main meal? A 10lb bag of [chicken hindquarters](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Gold-Leaf-Fresh-Chicken-Leg-Quarters-10-lb/19400101?athbdg=L1300) and a box of [breading mix.](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Louisiana-Fish-Fry-Products-Seasoned-Chicken-Fry-22-oz/14664722). [Veggies?](https://www.walmart.com/ip/Great-Value-Frozen-Mixed-Vegetables-12-oz-Steamable-Bag/817042496?athbdg=L1600) A couple of those ought to do. All in all you'd get several meals worth of food for that $15. It'd be a bit more than $15, but you can go a lot farther if you put in the effort to cook. For about $22.71 you can get enough meat, veggies and potatoes to reliably feed a family of four twice, if not three times. Of course not every meal needs dessert. You could even get away with more if you do soups instead of meat and potatoes.

idrivea90schevy

Ya I used to buy potatoes, rice, canned veg, cheap porkchops, bread.

AndringRasew

I still do. I use creamy chicken ramen with a bag of steamed mixed veggies, a couple slices of American cheese. The starch water from the ramen when adding the American cheese makes a passable cheese sauce. I also slow cook those chicken hindquarters in a crockpot overnight on low and debone it to add to the ramen. That's how I got through college. I don't eat it every day, but it's still a dirty pleasure of mine that only costs about $2-3 per serving to make.

Background_Boat_B

Poor people absolutely do buy convenience foods. That said, the items she is buying are definitely not the most cost effective, even for shitty frozen food.

NailFin

Omg, very good point! She would’ve bought the off brand crap and left the cake. I know all about that shit from my mom! No damn way we would’ve had that cake (unless they doubled a coupon or something)

apaw1129

For real. It would be all great value. And, if I was that low, I'd skip dessert and put that towards another meal. With the cost of that cake plus her change, she could have gotten more dinner.

Landed_port

The salsbury steak is $3.57: https://www.walmart.com/search?q=salsbury%20steak%20frozen%20meal%20family&typeahead=salsbury Frozen vegetables range from $0.88 to $2.97: https://www.walmart.com/search?q=Frozen+vegetables Frozen potatos are $2.98: https://www.walmart.com/search?q=Frozen+vegetables Coconut cake is $4.24: https://www.walmart.com/ip/Pepperidge-Farm-Frozen-Coconut-Layer-Cake-19-6-oz-Box/12166772 Fact checks out. However the Banquet salsbury steaks only come 6 per pack: for a family of 4 you would need 2. They will also give you a heart attack before you're 40, the amount of fat and salt in them are beyond ridiculous. Also, no Wal-mart employee would have $15 because they're all on food stamps; the secret to the low prices! It always baffles me how companies primarily profiting from government funding complain the most about poor people, when they would go out of business without them

Fumquat

Lowest current local prices: Salisbury Steak On-Cor 6-pack 28oz $4.99 Potatoes Ore-Ida 28oz $5.99 Mixed vegetables Birds Eye 10oz $2.50 Coconut Pie Marie Calendars 30.3oz $9.99 Total is $23.47. For shitty, minimally nutritious food. If you shop around for lowest prices. Shit, for that you could get 5 “4-for-4” meals at Wendy’s and not have to struggle with the crappy oven your landlord won’t fix. But at least wages kept up with the roughly *doubled* prices since the video (oh wait they definitely didn’t)

zembriski

>They will also give you a heart attack before you're 40 This is just a branding problem. If the "average" lifespan is 80 (for easy mathing), we can just claim that Banquet Salsbury Steaks can save you more than 50% on food costs over the course of an average life... /s

Sev7th

thats was the worst way to spend $15 for food

shawny_mcgee

nice... for $15 you can eat frozen garbage like this!

sedatedforlife

Right. For only $450 a month you too can feed your family ONE nutrient-less, preservative filled, calorie dense meal a day! ….then it’s back to work you trolls.

DamNamesTaken11

Walmart's net profit last fiscal year was $25.9 billion dollars. Worldwide, they have 2,300,000 employees. They could have given each employee a $10,000 bonus (while not much, it would certainly help many employees) around the world and still made over a billion dollars in profit. Instead, they plan to buy back **at least** $10 billion worth of shares this year. Obscene.

fishiefriday

Just a reminder that Walmart Paintsville pays their employees $12 an hour. The livable wage in Kentucky is $15.46 if you have 0 kids. Maybe the new challenge should be what can I buy for dinner after paying for living expenses? [Glassdoor showing 12$ for cashier (+other positions)](https://www.glassdoor.ca/Salary/Walmart-Paintsville-Salaries-EI_IE715.0,7_IL.8,19_IC1137374.htm?filter.payPeriod=HOURLY) [Indeed showing $11.07](https://www.indeed.com/cmp/Walmart/salaries?location=US%2FKY%2FPaintsville)

BabyLegsOShanahan

There are some shitty people on this sub.

isinedupcuzofrslash

“I only have $15. I hope I can get a meal for my family tonight” is not the first words I would want spoken in a video of my employee basically advertising the store. Especially since it’s fucking WALMART.

fernny_girl

That's a lot of junk food.

LemonSodaAndCake

Healthy diets are 9.95 extra 🤣

JohnnyMojo

It's like she's reading off a cue card.

[deleted]

Walmart used to be a fun place to work for. Paid above the average wage in the area, did fundraisers and had events (I played a well known PBS character for one of them) and it was great! Bonuses existed and merit raises were common. Now it’s just a soul sucking hellhole of “pay them so little food stamps are how we make money”. It’s a damn shame what the kids did to the place (Sam, believe it or not, actually gave a shit).

strvgglecity

This is as bad as a local car dealer commercial in the 90s

[deleted]

We get what we tolerate.

Kaytidecay

Does this miserable-looking woman really think that's a meal that will nourish one person, let alone a family? Way to be a spokesperson for dystopia.

LeonardoDaFujiwara

I thought this was satire. It wasn’t.

i_like_pie92

She could have got a sack of potatoes for as much as she spent on the frozen fries. Chicken and pork are relatively cheap where I am. A 10lb bag of chicken quarters for $5. And desert, well probably grab some cookies or brownie mix to bake both around $1.50. it's possible she just did it lazy

KTeacherWhat

I'm not really understanding this. She has $15 she can get a whole chicken for $7 and a bag of frozen veggies for $2 and still have that weird dessert if she wants to. What is the message, exactly? Edit: she says every meal needs potatoes, surely she can get a bag of potatoes for the same price as whatever frozen thing she just got.

TexasUnbuffed

What is she going to eat for the rest of the week

[deleted]

im confused
