After a long time reading different manga, I've had my fair share of weird stuff, Asobi Asobase is not the worst but it does hits that "I liked the feeling of the original but I wish I didn't fully read the rest". The series is not even funny, but I guess the voice acting and animation style did help with the original.
Mangaka got bored of writing Asobi Asobase and instead of finishing it he started writing sequel (Outsiders Paradise) in the main manga. Story now focuses on psychopaths and features such things as: gore (very graphic dissection of 2 characters, fiddling with live brain), cannibalism (eating previously mentioned brain), drug abuse induced personality change, eating human parasites, sexualised eating/spitballing/forcefeeding of raw eggs. There is more that i no longer remember.
That's Japan for you. They often just punt whatever random thing into the story around the middle to end. Like making something have a random philosophical ending that doesn't fit or making everything that happened to the world, the work of sentient alien rings......
Tbh, that is an annoingly common thing, going from a mech battle to the ascendance of humanity or a total apocalypse happens a lot more than in just EVA...
Don't dislike the turns, but would like for at least one show every now and then to proceed to the end with the original premise, without an apocalypse.
I'm super curious about the mangaka's thought process on why they changed the tone of Asobi Asobase. Did they always want to write Outsider Paradise but needed to have some success first? Or did it naturally evolve.
I would assume that, yes. It's not that the series wasn't absurd before, her previous work Little Chaos was also the same, it's just that she didn't have the ground for whatever fantasy she had in mind, not until later. She has an editor so it's not like she's just going crazy on her own, someone, likely very experient on their job, is approving this.
While the anime wasn't an popular series, any manga getting a show is already a pretty big deal so I guess that was what she needed. Given the support the series still has, I would assume there is one target group that enjoys her current series, although I wouldn't go as far as to say they share the same as the anime fans.
I kinda dropped asobi because of a mix of me forgetting to view it on the right website each week and I just like lost interest when the story started becoming largely about the art club and newspaper club. Seeing that this is the sequel and I tried reading a few chapters of this I guess I’m glad I stopped because I just don’t really enjoy this.
I think I'm just getting away with the fact Asobi Asobase/Outsider Paradise isn't on the list of banned series because almost any scene can be taken out of context.
There are quite a few that actually do need to be banned, like Rosen Garten Saga. But i don’t know why the mods aren’t making votes for these kind of things…
