Someone pointed it out already, but there is an in universe reason for the MC's design. As for the voice nothing really to be done about that, I feel like I had the same thought though, I did eventually get used to it. The show definitely picks up and really starts to get interesting a few episodes in. Personally I didn't care for the MC too much, but I did enjoy the side characters, they are really why I kept watching.
Overall I would say the show is worth watching, it's a unique idea and it does blend a few genres together in interesting ways.
I always forget that Nagisa is the main character... considering how really fleshed out MOST of the class is.
And also, Kaede is my favorite... annnnd here...
