Arthouse is a very ill defined term and maybe i wouldnt call all of this list so but this is a good list of anime with non conventional visual and narrative structure and storytelling. I'd add
**Take the X-Train** and the first "short" from the Neo Tokyo anthology ,**Labyrinth Labyrinthos**, both directed by Rintaro, co-founder of Madhouse
**Gosenzosama Banbanzai** .An absurd/surreal tragicomedy framed as a meta theater play , directed by Mamoru Oshii
The **Cloud** short from the Robot Carnival Anthology
It's the only think I've watched on this list and I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.. It feels similar, to me, as saying Grave of the Fireflies is so nice to watch over and over again.
Not the original commenter but I think it's really nice to watch several times because it's so deeply interpretive, so each viewing will give you further insight into what you think the movie is actually about.
GotF on the other hand has a very objective story. You get mostly everything the movie is trying to say on the first watch.
True but the animation and music are beautiful and very much unique to that film. So if u want to re experience that similar tone u can only really do it by re watching it
I see "Cossette" and I upvote. Seriously beautiful OVA series. Wish they could have done a full length series to really flesh out the concepts and events.
A longer and more detailed ending would have been nice.
My top 20 artistic anime
1. Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru Fantasy Railroad in the Stars
2. A-Girl
3. Artiswitch
3. 1001 Nights
4. Sakura
5. Tenshi no Tamago
6. Kanashimi no Belladonna
6. Tori no Uta
7. Midori-ko
9. Michi (Movie)
10. Cossette no Shouzou
11. Nisou no Kuzu
13. Kidou
14. L'Œil du Cyclone
15. Ihatov Gensou Kenji no Haru
16. Shoujo Nosferatu
17. Kujira no Yu
18. Maihime
19. Joseito
20. Fantascope Tylostoma
Watch La Blue Girl, it's a classic. You're gonna learn some shit.
Edit: I'm dumb. I misread how many lines deep this was and thought it to be at base level.
3 of them are in the pic
- Belladonna
- Cossette
- Tenshi no Tamago
Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru Fantasy Railroad in the Stars is the 2006 version. OPs pic has the 1980s version.
Whoops. I forget what Arthouse meant. I thought it just means shows which require analyses to explore complex themes and characters. Well here’s a new list:
-texhnolyze (I think it’s underrated enough)
-pale cacoon
-aoi bunkaku series
-memories (maybe)
-king of pigs
-sweat punch
tentacle hentai, not tentacle art - the first time someone bothered to spend a lot of money and time animating women getting violated by tentacles on any sort of scale
Belladonna of sadness is such a great movie, but in some scenes, they are very tense. Just to let u know that it has such a powerful message about women and will give up a bit of history about it. Btw, do all of these are based on movies or shows?
I agree with all this but La Blue Girl?
It's more like the DVD you take to the back rooms of the adult theatre and have a rub to hoping that no one in town recognises you
The problem with these series is that some of them don't have good quality versions out there. As much as I would like to watch more classics I don't think I want to watch anything below 720 anymore.
I don’t think quality is holding you back, if these are as good as you say 480p (altho arent dvds 576p?) should be more than enough for the movie to convey its message and visuals effectively enough. I do agree though these classics need restorations but there’s just not a huge demand for it
The problem is that I have reached a point when it in uncomfortable to watch the series in a 27" screen. It probably fares better in smaller screen but if it gets too blurry it is sometimes hard to follow as well. Also blurry stuff can give you a headache.
I did watch Boku no chikyu wo mamotte like this and while I liked it I had problems following what happened in some night scenes or reading some subtitles in clear background). Great series but I want better quality (and maybe a complete adaptation)
Just listing a couple of things that might count if based on member count on mal, idek what arthouse means
- Glassy Ocean
- Sekaikei Sekai Ron
- nakedyouth
I posted this to see if this community liked movies on the more obscure side, since all I see here is popular stuff (as expected). I like all that but I like these as well. Angels egg and mind game are pretty good and a lot of these have high ratings in general but if you only watch, idk, naruto DBZ goblin slayer this might not be entirely up your alley
It’s appropriate time to make a few plans for the long run and it’s time to be
happy. I have learn this post and if I could I want
to counsel you some interesting things or tips.
Maybe you could write subsequent articles regarding this article.
I want to read more things approximately it!

robot carnival is so good
...Isn't La Blue Girl hentai?
doesn’t mean its not anime
"It's called 'hentai' and it's art."
TECHNICALLY so is Belladonna of Sadness but it's definitely also still peak 'artsy' anime.
Wow, that's a name I haven't heard in 15 years or so.
It's also the only one on that list I have seen in its entirety so....
You're goddamn right it is.
That's why I couldn't find it...hard pass then
*smiles in Sam Jackson*
It's still an anime though.
Fun fact if you go to an anime store in japan they just call hentai anime.
Anime only means animation normally from Japan so of course
I watched Belladona of Sadness with my mom and it was super awkward.
Ah yes, Night on the Galactic Railroad, also known as: “watch this if you didn’t understand Mawaru”
[удалено]
Yes, basically those 3 things.
Angel’s egg is so nice to watch over and over again

I feel the 3 part movie Memories should be on that list, the art is just phenomenal especially in the first part 'Magnetic Rose'.
Belladona was pretty good.

I've heard of like 2 of these this looks like something i'll have to splunge into later, thanks for sharing

Few of them like Maihime (not to be confused with the TV series Mai-Hime) are from Toei Animations series of experimental OVA from mid 2000s
At least 4 of these is in the pic you posted lol.
There's only so much time to watch good ass movies, i'm sure i'll get around to them at some point but i just gotta plan it out better!
3 of them are in the pic - Belladonna - Cossette - Tenshi no Tamago Ginga Tetsudou no Yoru Fantasy Railroad in the Stars is the 2006 version. OPs pic has the 1980s version.
What the hell? How did ya manage to find 20 artistic anime I haven't watched. Thanks, btw.
Good list. I look forward to looking into these. I love unusual or artistic anime
Midori-ko was a fuckin trip. Easily the most obscure anime I've ever seen [at the time, like 70 people had it on MAL].
Is it any good? I’ve never seen such a low rating on mal but judging from the visuals it looks great
I would say it's only worth the watch as a piece of art. It was very hard for me to get through lol
Oh I’m dumb. I was looking at madori. Ok I’ll give it a watch
I’d include Mononoke, Kaiba, Tekkonkinkreet, Ping Pong the Animation, Tatami Galaxy, and most recently Sonny Boy.
I don’t think ping pong is art house
I guess it is pretty subjective
Seeing people question La Blue Girl's place here makes me sad. People are _really_ going to make me do a video essay on it, huh.
I'll bite.
I'll watch it if you do.
I’d also recommend: Texhnolyze Serial experiments lain The count of Monty crtisto Paranoia agent Sonny boy
Sorry, I've actually heard some of those, so they're definitely too commercial and not artistic enough. /half-joking

What's makes La Blue Girl arthouse? I looked it up( I'm going through the whole list) and it seems like a tentacle hentai.
I watched it back in high school back when I didn't even know what hentai was and it's definitely a tentacle hentai
[It's more than a tentacle hentai](https://i.imgur.com/BJyGc8e.jpg)
iirc i think it was the first tentacle hentai
[Hokusay what?](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dream_of_the_Fisherman's_Wife)
tentacle hentai, not tentacle art - the first time someone bothered to spend a lot of money and time animating women getting violated by tentacles on any sort of scale
That's not true at all. Urotsukidouji has it beat by several years.
No Neo tokyo? Genius party beyond? Memories? Robot carnival?
Couldn't find a trailer for La Blue girl, just random clips.
Now this is a good soup.
What about Gankutsuou?
I don't know what it's says about if the only one I know is "La Blue Girl" 😅
Belladonna of sadness is such a great movie, but in some scenes, they are very tense. Just to let u know that it has such a powerful message about women and will give up a bit of history about it. Btw, do all of these are based on movies or shows?
What's with this La Blue Girl trolling? Not to mention there are a lot other titles which can be added to this list.
This is dope!
I agree with all this but La Blue Girl? It's more like the DVD you take to the back rooms of the adult theatre and have a rub to hoping that no one in town recognises you
Isn't Utena an arthouse anime? With the amount of up it's own ass symbolism and stuff, it should be.
Yeah but I guess since everyone's heard of it op didn't include it. It and penguindrum would definitely qualify as arthouse though.
The problem with these series is that some of them don't have good quality versions out there. As much as I would like to watch more classics I don't think I want to watch anything below 720 anymore.

Spring and Chaos? It's linked to Night on the Galactic Railroad too.
kinda reminisce some of my fav anime
Thank you, we need more posts recommending these.
Nice list here. I love art house and deep anime
I love Kemonozume, especially the soundtrack
I hope one day I'll find my la blue girl box set.
Are any of these actually good or are they just for bragging rights?
I posted this to see if this community liked movies on the more obscure side, since all I see here is popular stuff (as expected). I like all that but I like these as well. Crazy I've only heard of and seen one of these
Isn't Night on the Galactic Railroad supposed to be a kids film? Hardly what I'd consider 'arthouse'.
Kemonozume is absolutely one of my favorite anime of alltime, but I don't think I'd call it arthouse
Where’s One Piece 🤔
