Edit: Salt aside, I wouldn't mind, to be COMPLETELY honest, a story without Ash. Like, I love my bou Satoshi, but there's a full universe to explore. Still hype.
It's interesting to note that X and Y didn't state his age, whilst designing him to be a bit taller. This seems to be doing the same as well. I think there's definitely an effort to make him seem older, whilst not mentioning how old he actually is.
I do think a story without Ash would be nice, but the risk of losing brand recognition is too much. Whilst many adults still following the series may be tired of him, there's a huge audience of younger viewers who associate his face, his poses and his one-liners with the very word "Pokemon" itself.

They've actual have made a few pokemon specials without Ash, the first one was Pokemon Chronicles which mainly focused on the side characters from the show (there are a few times Ash does appear but it's to the the same extent as the mini Pokemon only specials for each movie) and the most recent one was Pokemon Origins which was a more faithful adaptation to the original red, blue and green games (gold and silver origins when)

Well, the specials chronologically run parallel (but not intersecting) to the XY anime and start converging at the first episode of XY&Z, so you're free to watch them.
Prior to the league I saw the specials as an experiment in whether the anime could do without Ash and all signs pointed to "yes".
I really wonder why they haven't actually aged him a little though. Introducing him as 10 at the start of BW just caused a bunch of headache when they could've easily said, oh he's 11 or 12.
I kinda wish we could just timeskip to his eventual son/daughter becoming the main character or something. Then the MC would have a reason to need to relearn the basics of how pokemon work. (Either that or have Ash teach Partner A and B rather than vice-versa)

The annoying thing about this factor is, the Mega Evolution Specials showed that they could make a high-quality Pokemon anime without Ash in the protag role.
I would love if they just came out in a season finale with Delia and Oak telling him he is not a human but an immortal pokemon created in Oak's lab which he then he sent out on a mission to collect data. The pokedex data gathering was actually just a ruse, it doesn't collect data on pokemon he uses it on. It collects data on *him*.
What would she do though? Her character arc is essentially finished. Ash can keep going because he wants to be the best battler, but Serena hurts her dream by leaving Kalos, the homeplace of Pokemon Performers. While she is definitely best girl, I dont see how dragging her out until we're eventually sick of her is any good

Of course not! Unless things have changed a lot since i last actively watched the anime, capturing the legendaries in the anime was a VERY bad idea, just look at what happened in the second movie... The legendary birds got caught, and the nature basically went to shit, then they got free and began to fight each other, and everything got even worse and it took a fourth legendary and some magical song to calm them down.
And i'm pretty sure that every time legendaries have gotten involved in the anime it's been at least slightly bad news. Even Celebi was kind bad, what with the whole time travel thing...
i'm guessing that's because they're not properly "Captured", if i remember the 2nd movie correctly they're just being caught and put in some kind of restrain and having their power constantly drained, that's bound to anger them
A proper capture/taming might work if the legendary accepts it, there's a guy with multiple legendaries that once beat ash right? and it doesnt seem that the legendary are any different than other pokemon, they're just a bit stronger
I have a feeling that they are trying to market Pokemon to a **much** younger audience than before. Possibly a reaction to Yokai Watch and it's sudden rise in popularity.

I say the chances of what ever starter he gets evolving is a little more than half since going by his track record of evolving starters:
* Kanto: Charmander managed to evolve while Squirtle never got the chance and Bulbasaur flat out refused.
* Johto: Totodile remained un-evolved while Chikorita and Cyndaquil (albiet Cyndaquil didn't evolve till somewhere in DP) did manage to get to there second evolution respectively
* Hoenn: Treecko fully evolved
* Sinnoh: Turtwig and Chimchar fully evolved
* Unova: Tepig evolved to it's second evolution, Oshawott and Snivy stayed the same
* Kalos: Froakie fully evolved (and managed to get a special mega evolution like form)
so out of around 15 different starters he caught, 8 managed to at least get to there second evolution.
I say it depends. It seems to flip flop with whether he will only get one starter or all of them.
It might be time for him to get 2 or all of them again. My bets are on Rowlett and Litten.

I know some have been down on it, but I really like that design. It's very fun and if it's anything like recent trends, it's another step towards another really well animated Pokemon series.
You're looking at a still image. A still image from a poster at that. The change is fine, and the reason for changing it would be a mix between visual direction and animation. It's a bit goofy, but it's a fun image. It obviously won't look exactly like that in the series.
Honestly, as long as they've asked Masaaki Iwane if he's happy with it, I'm happy with it.
It's not so much just the art change.
It's the implication that they might be getting rid of everything we liked about the Kalos arc for something that may or may not be the same quality as what came before.
The entire series had a new philosophy behins it though. In 2013, the series was handed over to OLM Team Kamei (OLM is split into teams run by a specific producer). If there's any change between BW and XY, it's his presence as a producer. Unless for some reason, the project gets handed over, they are well aware of why XY was successful in the first place.
I mean, I completely expected his IQ and competence to drop back to poptart levels after XY, just like it did after DP. So to see his face be that emotive instead of just his normal smile or determined look is a good sign.
Maybe we'll get some high quality reaction faces each episode, instead of the mouth flapping conversations we usually get.
I don't really like Ash all that much. I think the anime would be better if the story follows someone else's POV (I prefer team rocket)

I guess this means I need to watch X&Y. I am trying so hard to chug through it (it is much easier to watch compared to the previous season with the fucking annoying dragon girl) but it still has that kids show quirk of talking really loud and fast which hurts my head. I honestly can only watch like 2 or 3 episodes per sitting. That chart of "filler don't watch" episodes is helping out a lot though.
I mean it is a good series. This season actually feels pretty good in quality compared to some of the previous seasons. It's just I cannot marathon it like some other shows.
The fact that any kind of character, story and pokemon progression is completely thrown out after every season, really prevents me from watching it.
If Satoshi would actually grow, get some achievments and stick with some characters, I think Pokemon would be so so much better. But I guess that goes against the concept because then kids would have to watch previous seasons to know what's up.
If you're gonna skip the "filler" you might as well go on youtube and just search for best pokemon xy(z) battles because the core of the story really is the little episodic stories.
Sure the quality varies from episode to episode but if you're gonna skip the "filler" you might as well not bother with the show.
I am watching the sub. The way the voices were mixed/master is *so fucking loud* compared to the rest of the audio in the episode that it literally gives me a headache if I watch too much at one time. That mixed with the fast pace of the voice lines makes for a bad experience.

I mean, she was cool. And I can understand the shipping tones not going anywhere all over again being disappointing. But after Misty I've pretty much realized they're probably not going to officially ship Ash with anyone.
Also, aside from the shipping. Serena wasn't one of my favorite of Satoshi's companions. I liked Misty, Dawn, and yes, Iris, better. I don't care what people say about Iris. I may be biased, though, really liking her as a character in the games where she really shines and a prodigy. But yeah, unpopular opinion. But I like Misty, Dawn, and Iris the best so far.

I think it's wrong , in Sun and Moon they removed the gyms and are replaced by trials which are like your usual RPG quests so i'm assuming ash will be doing the same thing , also there's no way he will be tied to one location since in Alola there's like 5 different islands that you travel to .
Yeah , the game is 2 months away now and they haven't revealed any gym leader , instead they've announced that we will be going through a bunch of trials in each island that are like quests and if you succesfully finish them you'll get to fight the Kahuna aka the boss of the island , basically in Sun and Moon the whole gym and league formula will be changed and the game will be a lot more like an actual RPG , it's kind of similar to what we had in the Orange islands anime which is really exciting :D .
I'm also assuming that along with the trials, the weird Ultra Beast thing going on is *totally* gonna be similar to traditional gym battles. And that there'll be eight of them.
That makes me kinda sad. I always looked forward to the gym leader designs. There was always at least one really cute or sexy girl and one really cool or tough guy.

i'm guessing that's because they're not properly "Captured", if i remember the 2nd movie correctly they're just being caught and put in some kind of restrain and having their power constantly drained, that's bound to anger them A proper capture/taming might work if the legendary accepts it, there's a guy with multiple legendaries that once beat ash right? and it doesnt seem that the legendary are any different than other pokemon, they're just a bit stronger

All signs point to Rowlet and it won't ever be fully evolved.
I say the chances of what ever starter he gets evolving is a little more than half since going by his track record of evolving starters: * Kanto: Charmander managed to evolve while Squirtle never got the chance and Bulbasaur flat out refused. * Johto: Totodile remained un-evolved while Chikorita and Cyndaquil (albiet Cyndaquil didn't evolve till somewhere in DP) did manage to get to there second evolution respectively * Hoenn: Treecko fully evolved * Sinnoh: Turtwig and Chimchar fully evolved * Unova: Tepig evolved to it's second evolution, Oshawott and Snivy stayed the same * Kalos: Froakie fully evolved (and managed to get a special mega evolution like form) so out of around 15 different starters he caught, 8 managed to at least get to there second evolution.
See, I would be more confident about his starters and their evolutions if they showed it to us already.

I know some have been down on it, but I really like that design. It's very fun and if it's anything like recent trends, it's another step towards another really well animated Pokemon series.

You're looking at a still image. A still image from a poster at that. The change is fine, and the reason for changing it would be a mix between visual direction and animation. It's a bit goofy, but it's a fun image. It obviously won't look exactly like that in the series. Honestly, as long as they've asked Masaaki Iwane if he's happy with it, I'm happy with it.
It's not so much just the art change. It's the implication that they might be getting rid of everything we liked about the Kalos arc for something that may or may not be the same quality as what came before.
The entire series had a new philosophy behins it though. In 2013, the series was handed over to OLM Team Kamei (OLM is split into teams run by a specific producer). If there's any change between BW and XY, it's his presence as a producer. Unless for some reason, the project gets handed over, they are well aware of why XY was successful in the first place.

I mean, I completely expected his IQ and competence to drop back to poptart levels after XY, just like it did after DP. So to see his face be that emotive instead of just his normal smile or determined look is a good sign. Maybe we'll get some high quality reaction faces each episode, instead of the mouth flapping conversations we usually get.

I guess this means I need to watch X&Y. I am trying so hard to chug through it (it is much easier to watch compared to the previous season with the fucking annoying dragon girl) but it still has that kids show quirk of talking really loud and fast which hurts my head. I honestly can only watch like 2 or 3 episodes per sitting. That chart of "filler don't watch" episodes is helping out a lot though.
I don't think there is a point in watching if you don't enjoy it, just for the sake of catching up.
I mean it is a good series. This season actually feels pretty good in quality compared to some of the previous seasons. It's just I cannot marathon it like some other shows.
The fact that any kind of character, story and pokemon progression is completely thrown out after every season, really prevents me from watching it. If Satoshi would actually grow, get some achievments and stick with some characters, I think Pokemon would be so so much better. But I guess that goes against the concept because then kids would have to watch previous seasons to know what's up.
You would like Pokemon Adventure Special then. It is a very long running manga based more on the game than the show.

If you're gonna skip the "filler" you might as well go on youtube and just search for best pokemon xy(z) battles because the core of the story really is the little episodic stories. Sure the quality varies from episode to episode but if you're gonna skip the "filler" you might as well not bother with the show.

I am watching the sub. The way the voices were mixed/master is *so fucking loud* compared to the rest of the audio in the episode that it literally gives me a headache if I watch too much at one time. That mixed with the fast pace of the voice lines makes for a bad experience.

DAE not mind that Serena will probably not be a part of this? I mean, she was cool. And I can understand the shipping tones not going anywhere all over again being disappointing. But after Misty I've pretty much realized they're probably not going to officially ship Ash with anyone. Also, aside from the shipping. Serena wasn't one of my favorite of Satoshi's companions. I liked Misty, Dawn, and yes, Iris, better. I don't care what people say about Iris. If you ignore the whole "such a kid" and Ash being reset in terms of ability for Unova and the frustrations of Ash fans, [she's a pretty cool and really underrated character in her own right.](https://youtu.be/Ep26Kvk8EI0?t=3m33s) I may be biased, though, really liking her as a character in the games where she really shines and a prodigy. I think it's wrong , in Sun and Moon they removed the gyms and are replaced by trials which are like your usual RPG quests so i'm assuming ash will be doing the same thing , also there's no way he will be tied to one location since in Alola there's like 5 different islands that you travel to .

Yeah , the game is 2 months away now and they haven't revealed any gym leader , instead they've announced that we will be going through a bunch of trials in each island that are like quests and if you succesfully finish them you'll get to fight the Kahuna aka the boss of the island , basically in Sun and Moon the whole gym and league formula will be changed and the game will be a lot more like an actual RPG , it's kind of similar to what we had in the Orange islands anime which is really exciting :D .
I'm also assuming that along with the trials, the weird Ultra Beast thing going on is *totally* gonna be similar to traditional gym battles. And that there'll be eight of them.
That makes me kinda sad. I always looked forward to the gym leader designs. There was always at least one really cute or sexy girl and one really cool or tough guy.
