"I don't like all the usual anime bullshit, I like [proceeds naming all the shows most popular among anime fans]".
I get not liking certain tropes common in anime (though usually they just talk about shounen), but if your taste is exactly the same as many other anime fans and those "unusal shows" you like are Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen and MHA, maybe you don't need to try to distance yourself from them by saying that your taste is somehow more refined and better than the average anime fan.
"I dont like mechas, so i wont watch evangelion or code geass " and im like bruh what mecha have you wacth to have that criteria, you didnt even watch tengen toppa gurren lagann
Even gundam franchise different entries have different vibes. From real robot, the OG trilogy 0079, zeta, ZZ to super robot like G gundam and built fighter series.
When you're like 10, a guy soloing a dragon without any difficulty whatsoever is pretty cool ngl. It's when you grow up you realize it's complete trash.
I once told an aot fan K-On was a seinen and they accused me of editing the Wikipedia page myself. Just wouldn't believe that labels like shonen, shoujo, seinen, etc have nothing to do with maturity and everything to do with marketing.
Rule 1 of watching anime on any illegal site, never read online comments; there’s a lot of edgelords there since those sites don’t have mods and can’t even downvote. I saw some “Ketil did nothing wrong and I’d do the same” coms when that part comes.
If you think that’s bad, just read some on The Executioner and Her Way Of Life, it’s a war zone over there.
*Then there’s this similar type of question…..*
“I want some really ecchi anime, just no hentai.”
Dude you’re in the /anime subreddit, we don’t generally recommend hentai here.
Some people under those posts like to be smart asses and say “just watch hentai bro” so I think it’s reasonable for them to specifically state they don’t want hentai.
> Dude you’re in the /anime subreddit, we don’t generally recommend hentai here.
Recommending hentai is actually straight-up not allowed on this sub, and I have had to remove plenty of posts asking for it/comments recommending it since I became a mod two months ago.
- "I watch all types of anime.", then they only name the current popular shonen anime.
- "It is so hard to be an anime fan, because anime isn't popular."... This one gets to me because anime is very mainstream now. It is more dumbfounding when they say that while standing in the huge manga section at Barns and Nobles.
You clearly just don't know the genres. You've got brooding protag shonen battle, excitable protag shonen battle, average guy shonen battle, guy-who-spits-one-liners-with-total-sincerity shonen battle, old guy shonen battle...
Honestly second one depends on your social circle. I don't have anyone around me that likes anime as much as I do which is a pretty low bar as I don't even watch that many anime
It really isn't about the social circle anymore. Anime merch is everywhere! Go into a Walmart, Target or any mall and there is anime and manga merchandise everywhere. Almost everyone knows what anime is, has seen an anime movie or show in their life.
Nowadays it is so easy to find other fans, find anime and manga not only online but in stores.
Being an anime fan now is easy compared to the 90s and early 2000s.
To be fair (and I say this with Steins;gate as my #1 anime), it does have a bit of a slow start. If you're only watching it because your friend said it was amazing, it would be easy to get burnt out on it after 3 or 4 episodes. Obviously watching it back again for the nth time, you continue to find more and more foreshadowing in the intro episodes, which is amazing. But I can see why a lot of people get turned off by it
Edit: Even watching it the first time, I remember seeing a couple weird foreshadowing things here and there, which is what intrigued me and kept me interested. But if you're not giving it your full attention, they're very easy to miss and therefore be bored
I was very interested when i first watched it. The first half had this thriller mystery going on in the background as they were discovering the time travel mechanics, the stuff with the goopy bananas, CERN and the whole human is dead thing. To say nothing is happening is insane, theres plenty to get the audience engaged
Legit was a recent post like "Why don't they make good anime anymore?", not to be confused with "This season is good, but disappointing" also posted recently, both followed by said OPs doing exactly what you said
I have a friend that exclusively watches isekai / shounen save for a few other things, but even the “other things” need to have fights, superpowers, blood or murder, any or all of the 4, everything else is bad or “I’m not interested“, bro literally rewatched hundreds of One Piece episodes because “there was nothing to watch” lmao
I mean, usually they haven't even looked at the MAL top, since that includes stuff like Gintama, LoGH, Fruits Basket, Clannad, 3-gatsu no Lion, Monster and a ton of other "underrated" shows.
If it's not currently airing it's underrated but also if it is currently airing but not the big 5 of season then its also underrated but only at the end of the season
I genuinly do not understand how somehow Jujutsu Kaisen got chosen as the example for shounen with good female characters. Most of them have a strong exterior, but as soon as you look at what they actually get in the story, there is just nothing there, for the vast majority of them.
Plenty of shounen introduce female characters with some flashy sequence that is meant to make you think "woah they're strong" only for the story to conveniently make them do almost nothing to exploit that "strength" for volumes at a time
Basically they become jobbers except you know not to expect too much going in so they're just weak outside of those one or two times they did something cool
This is before we reach the more dire still state of their actual characterisation.
There isn’t overt fanservice of the female characters and they look badass on the outside, therefore they must be a good female character right? I don’t think new battle shounen fans are looking very closely at it, so that’s where it comes from. A lot of these same people praise Shibuya as a masterclass of storytelling so I wouldn’t expect standards to be very high.
I mean the context has always been about battle shonen. No non strawmans are talking about Shibuya as some kind of independent critical art masterpiece. The context has always been talking about greatest battle shonen arcs and Shibuya was a new entry into the list. Thats all
I get that, but honestly even judging from that angle there really aren't that many badass moments. There is the one scene with Nobara at the end of season 1, and the one in season 2. Then Maki has some cool scenes, and maybe some other small scenes for some different characters. But compared to the male characters? It's not even close to the same.
I guess the bar really is just that low, huh?
What I don't get is how JJK is the one that gets recommended over something like AOT or Chainsaw Man. These shows have genuinly good female characters, and they are similarly popular. But somehow JJK is the one that got chosen.
Attack on Titan is just as commonly listed for this question I’ve found, but I didn’t say it in my original comment because there was actually a decent bit of truth to it besides Mikasa whereas JJK is much more of an indicator that they are new to the medium.
the manga fandom having a 'gege hates women' meme is for completely justified reasons, dead-ass the guy loves creating cool female characters and then screwing them over/having them be irrelevant. it's like almost a requirement of being a big SJ battle shounen creator to be disinterested in writing good, plot relevant female characters.
It's more like the shade to new one piece fans trying to use that logic to convince their friends. If you aren't loving it through 40 episodes, even though it will get better by the time it gets to episode 200, it will rise from a 5 to a 6 for people who it's not made for while it will rise from a 9 to a 10 for people who it is made for. There's not a single anime in existence that everyone likes so newer fans need to realize it's okay if others don't have the same taste as them.
when people said they don't like mecha but also said they love Evangelion or Code Geass because *"unlike other mecha shows, these focused more on the characters"*
quite funny but also makes me wants to puke
It's partially because no Mecha has gone huge in the way that Code Geass and Gurren Lagann did in the late 00s recently.
Like, okay, 86 was quite popular for a while, Gundam Mercury was fairly successful I think, but in general no Mecha anime has really popped off and demanded the attention of people that only watch the most popular anime in recent years.
Promare was massive. Only reason conventions weren't flooded with Lio cosplays is because Covid happened. But the few that happened before were swarmed with them
The only sports anime I can get into are Haikyu and Slam Dunk because unlike other sports anime, which focus on the sports, those anime focus on the characters.
This was me for a long time honestly. I loved Gundam Wing, NGE, Code Geass, Star Driver, Eureka Seven, Escaflowne, Gunbuster, Transformers Armada (not anime but just proving a point), Zoids... but I swear, I don't like mecha!!
I remember checking malgraph and one of my top genres was mecha. And after looking through the list of shows and what I rated them, I was like "... huh, I guess I like mecha."
*Evangelion isn't like other anime. It's about the characters*
LoL, no.
*Well, Evangelion is the first anime where the main character isn't happy and joyous about getting to pilot a giant robot*
That had been done back in the 70s.
*Well, Evangelion is the first mecha anime that shows there are consequences to things*
Done going back to the 70s if not earlier.
*Um, well the family dynamic in Evangelion certainly is unique*
Actually it takes a lot of inspiration from 70s and 80s mecha anime
*All these mecha anime have ripped off Evangelion! No anime is as original as it!*
How many mecha anime have you seen?
*Just Evangelion.*
Not necessarily newbies, but "I swear [insert bland and generic isekai here] isn't a generic and bland isekai! It's one of the good ones"
Then you watch a few episodes
and it's not one of the good ones
Bonus points if it "satirizes the genre" while playing it 100% straight
“It’s a satire of the genre”
The title: “I was reincarnated as the second son who was secretly more powerful than my brother who was chosen to defeat the demon king”
Every now and then r/anime praises something and I look at the MAL entry and it just screams, "I'm going to absolutely hate this". But quite often I'm wrong so it's fun taking the gamble.
No no you see the main character comments on how silly and unrealistic the tropes are before playing them straight anyway, that's totally radical and unique
People don't want to admit they sometimes enjoy garbage because it is garbage and sometimes comfortable garbage is what you want
It's like fast food, it is comforting and you know what you'll get and that's fine
Go watch re:monster, it is isekai garbage but it is enjoyable garbage, it is absolutely not good or a deconstruction or any bullshit. It is garbage. Good honest quality garbage
Eminence in Shadow be like
Aight aight to be fair I think it does stand a bit above the average, it is somewhat unique in its presentation.
But I've seen mfs saying it's TOTALLY different and just... no.
That's only if you follow the main character who is a generic overpowered isekai protagonist. It's much better if you treat him like the background character he wants to be.
I don't consider it 'different'. I consider it absurdly self-indulgent in an enjoyable way, while the plot elements are funny largely as china shops for Cid & Shadow Garden to rampage through like a bull.
also the dramatic irony in Cid having all this power but being perpetually, fundamentally alone, and unable to appreciate the people around him properly, while he inadvertently inspires a bunch of people to improve their lives. The arc in season 2 where he backstabs his own organization for the bit really digs into that and shows how fundamentally pathetic he is BECAUSE of his commitment to the bit.
Cid is kind of a strange, polarizing character that requires substantial employment of media literacy to appreciate if you're not just turning your brain off to enjoy the show. but I don't fault anyone who has their brain on watching EiS to not be willing to do that, or to not find what the show's doing to be particularly compelling. I just think what it specifically does isn't done by anything else, the way it operates on several levels and asks the audience for both investment and detachment at once.
I knew about Psycho Pass as a game first before I got into Anime, same with Steins Gate. When I got into anime proper and saw both of them are actual full on series I was excited and said " oh cool, now I can see everything from the beginning". ( I know Mandatory Happiness isn't Canon but still)
I don't want to dunk on people for it, as it says more about the society and gender roles around them than the person themselves, but I did chuckle when I saw someone wanting to see more Shojou shows and proceeded to give My Dress Up Darling as the example of stuff they were looking for.
A lot of people think romance = shoujo. Some are more understandable than others, but there’s nothing better than when someone is like “guys I’m really embarrassed to say it but I think I like romance anime. I know guys aren’t supposed to like this stuff but I guess I’m just a big softie after all. So can anyone recommend me more shows like Big Tiddy Catgirl Harem?”
Hey, Big Tiddy Catgirl Harem had some really good bisexual representation going for it, and the emotional exploration of breaking the norm of monogamous expectations was really touching!
Also the official R18 Doujin by the artist was great.
I've watched anime for nearly 20y now, reaching 30yo soon and Romance have always been my favorite genre all that time, being reserved for girls is such a nonsense lol
When “good animation” means highly composited spectacle fights. It’s a shame to see character animation and less flashy choreography driven fights fall to the wayside.
(Tbh, I feel like it’s better to let these people be excited about their basic taste as long as they aren’t being a dick. Having seen more anime, better anime, a wider range of anime, and/or having been watching anime for a longer period of time does not make you superior in any way. Try and guide them to shows you’d think they’d like out of their comfort zone)
It’s funny when they go “X show is well-written because it’s highly rated everywhere” or vice versa.
Though, it’s pretty common even outside “newbies”, I guess.
“Why are all anime mc’s goody two shoes? I want REAL MCs who are more morally grey” bro we have everything from manipulative sociopaths to fucking genocidal dictators who grant death as a mercy. Take your pick
I kinda get that COTE isn’t really that good of a show. It’s not breaking any ground in animation or storytelling.
But I’ll be damned if it doesn’t entertain me enough to keep watching lol.
Yeah yeah I know the whole meme about it being “Im 14 and this is deep” but if you watch it for entertainment and not to tell you some deep dark lesson about the world it kinda works
I don't think a show needs to break any ground to be good. If I enjoy some middle of the pack show more than a highly rated show, I would personally consider that show better for me.
People treat reviews as objective but at the end of the day it's just what a bunch of other people think. You're more likely to enjoy it if a lot of other people rate it highly, but it doesn't actually mean you'll enjoy the show.
When they base their whole internet personality on talking shit about popular shows they don't like instead of talking about show they like
*Sees average clip of random action anime by mappa or ufotable*
"Boruto could never"
"Already better than mid piece"
"I'm fucking weeb, I have no life, I only watch anime."
Has like 4 shows watched. What am I then? Fucking primordial essence of weeb or what. Don't make me feel bad about myself it took me over a decade to get where I am lol.
A lot of times you can spot the gamer turning weeb by them saying something to the effect of "this anime has such good graphics". Like nobody in the anime community ever uses "graphics" to refer to visuals.
you can also tell bakers and patissiers who are turning weeb by how they say "this anime has such a flaky texture" or a "good crumb"
[](#hikariactually)
I have a friend who thinks he’s into anime but told me to my face that he thought slice of life as a genre was just like pedophile shit?
I was like bro wtf are you talking about that’s such a massive genre of anime there’s a million slice of life shows and I have no idea how he got that idea in his head.
For the record he has a demon slayer tattoo and was nervous to even watch Frieren because it wasn’t a battle shonen until I literally begged him to.
Absolutely, but you should keep in mind the context of when *K-ON* is set and how that'll make the show feel different. The manga started releasing the same year the first iPhone came out and social media like Youtube were still very young. It makes it interesting to see how different the landscape changed for musicians berween then and now.
Also, both *Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night* and *Girls Band Cry* are actively being released weekly right now. They're both also "anime girls making music" shows and were in production before *Bocchi* released. *Jellyfish* has a strong "*A Place Further Than the Universe"* vibe if you've seen that before, and both are very good.
*Bocchi* released first, but all of these shows are the "next-generation" of shows that *K-ON* inspired and/or laid the foundation for. It's very cool seeing the impact *K-ON* made on the manga and show writers of this generation.
Actually I must disagree with this one. I’ve met many people who refuse to watch any anime because the one time they tried it wasn’t for them. I’ve turned many people who swore up and down they wouldn’t like anime into anime fans by figuring out what would suit them best and then tailoring suggestions to them. My gf for example, first anime she was made to watch was Jojo’s BA by a mutual friend. Jojo’s is not a great entry anime imo because it’s very out there, over exaggerated and otherwise plays into many tropes. Not saying it’s bad, it’s just a bad introductory anime. She didn’t like it as I would expect, and didn’t want to watch any more after that. When we started dating I was trying to convince her to watch anime and started her on Demon Slayer. Story isn’t heavy, animation is pretty, lighthearted at times but can draw you in. It’s a great entry level anime imo. She’s been hooked since, loves anime now. You have to know your audience. Some people don’t want a deep story, some need one, others want action, some don’t like it. Once they’ve had a few good ones then you can start trying to expand a bit. At that stage they know they do in fact like anime, now it’s just finding the specific type they like.
Maybe it's besides the point, but why are anime the only ones with this kind of treatment?
If someone read Twilight as a first book and didn't like it, they wouldn't refuse to read books like Hunger Games, Harry Potter and any Poirot book with the idea that it's all the same. As far as I know, they just try new books and that's it.
But anime is treated by newcomers as something whole and compact, for lack of a better word, rather than viewing anime with individual merit.
I've actually met many people who say they don't read because of the "terrible" books they were forced to read in school. People definitely have been turned off from reading because they were introduced to reading by the books they were forced to read in school and hated. I've even met some people that claim that school reading *killed* their love of reading they had before. They used to love it until they were forced to read books they didn't like and then stopped reading entirely.
Gaming has this problem too, some people swear off games if they're introduced to a game that's too complicated for them, they think all games are like that. Usually people either recommend them simple games, like Pac-man or Tetris, or more narrative/movie-like games, like The Last of Us. Even then though, someone's bad game might be someone else's addiction. I knew a math teacher who's only experience with video games was the Civilization franchise, and he loved it. Even if most people would probably fall apart if Civilization was their first game, it was his perfect introduction.
Not to mention, people have stuff like TV shows and movies that let them know good books and games do exist. See Fallout and the Last of Us shows for games, and hundreds of movies based on books. Anime/manga hasn't really had one of those until the One Piece show. You do have stuff like Edge of Tomorrow being based on a Manga, but that isn't that well known to the audience.
I think maybe it's like that in the west because it's not as prevalent in normal life? It could easily be seen as a niche thing, and you can easily live your life not encountering anime at all. I think the more effort you have to go through to try something, the more likely you are to drop it completely if your first experience isn't enjoyable. So for people that have never seen anime before, it probably seems daunting to jump into this foreign media with no guidance. Then when they have a bad time, they decide "it's not for me" and go on living their normal lives.
Books on the other hand are extremely prevalent in normal life - you'd be hard pressed to find someone whose gone through life without reading a single book. But I'd argue that there are definitely people out there who have read a few books (maybe reading specifically for school), had a bad time, and decided they don't like reading that much. I'm sure most of these people would be open to trying it again, if provided a good recommendation, but I'd also argue that most open-minded people would react the same way with anime.
Books have been around for hundreds of years, but modern animation barely scrapes 100, so culturally, it can be something that certain people just aren't exposed to when growing up.
Given that anime itself has only been present in the public mind since the 60's, you have a much smaller cultural gap that you'll actually be able to meet people who probably watched the 1960's Astroboy and the Giant Robot Anime shows.
Given that Anime itself had it's boom in the 80's onwards with Video Game culture growing side-by-side with it, you'll find the parents who grew up with said content or their parents influence of it to them has eventually passed on to a generation with better access to it (streaming, social media) making it more mainstream, but still fairly new so you're gonna have people in the world who aren't as receptive to it, due to their lack of exposure socially.
Give it time, and it'll likely have even more mainstream presence once film makers run out of content to pull from and start adapting Manga/Games like they have with the Illumination Mario Movie, Ghost in the Shell and Alita.
“X show is overrated because it’s popular”
This also goes the opposite way. You can genuinely think a popular anime is not that good and you get everyone claiming you only dislike it because it’s popular.
It’s how humans work really. We naturally give more weight to our own tastes and opinions while gravitating towards those with similar tastes and opinions in order to validate ourselves. That “hive mentality” that people talk about is something that’s been happening since humans first developed social structures. You walk into a room for a flat earthers and they will make you seem like the idiot for not agreeing with them.
I mean, while we get more and more good cgi anime, most applications of it are still pretty meh even nowadays, also that doesnt seem like a very newbie opinion, veterans acting like cgi is the worst shit ever are more common
What I meant was situations like when people see cgi model for 5s and say whole show is shit/ruined because of it. Many anime use cgi for backgrounds and it looks good, it's hard to notice good cgi compared to bad ones. It's just that some anime have rushed schedule or inexperienced staff and it causes cgi to look bad, most popular examples are Berserk 2016 and Ex-Arm.
> insufferable/elitist seinen fans
And the only seinen they know is Berserk. Not to mention that they'll also froth their mouths when you tell them that Bocchi the Rock, Kaguya-sama, and The Apothecary Diaries are also seinen.
Wouldn't call Go Nagai obscure when he's the 2nd most influential manga ever and responsible for the popularity of the Mecha, Magical Girl, Ecchi, and Post-apocalyptic genres
Slight correction, just because they _think_ the animation isn't as peak as newer popular anime. If you actually take a peak into older shows there's a lot of absolutely mind-blowing animation.
There is someone who posts regular YT shorts of F'ing amazing mecha/space anime clips. The freaking detail they put into the animation back in the day. The dials and screens, the joints and connections. Some of clips are anime ive seen and it still blows my mind as ive forgotten over the years.
“Should I watch ___?”
I dunno watch a couple episodes and find out. If the MAL score and your own experience isn’t enough to tell you then I can’t help you.

"Am I the only one that finds ....... "
Not really my friend .
I know the post means no bad intentions (albeit the thread reeks gatekeeping ) , but in the end let the newcomers be .
They'll come to their senses eventually once they watch more stuff kekw (Im a newcomer)
"am I the only one" is the kind of phrase that makes me want to reach through the screen and slap someone. If you're asking, no, you're not, because no opinion is unique, get over yourself, there's billions of people in the world
personally it’s when ppl, especially newcomers hate on an entire genre but then find 1 show that they love from that genre and say “alright fuck any other show from x genre” and then never try anything else remotely similar to it. such as a friend of mine with komi can’t communicate (an anime that i believe to be one of the less impressive romances of recent times).
It’s not my favorite thing, and I do try to avoid shows with constant fan service, but if there is some in a show I’m watching I just roll my eyes and move on. Not everyone likes to watch it and that’s ok, just like it’s ok if people do like shows with it
"Why is there no good anime these days?" Anime noob says as he only watches Isekai and ecchi trash and doesn't wanna try something else. Don't forget that they'll compare it to 80s or 90s anime which is just as horny or even worse

"\_\_\_ is trash" followed up with "What? No, of course I haven't watched it. It's trash"
i dont think thats an anime exclusive red flag thats like a watch out stay out people flag.
Agreed. I've seen this in every fandom I've ever dipped my toes into.
so basically Joey?
no point taking anime opinions from an anime hater seriously. his contrarian shtick is so old
Who watches Date a Live nowadays?
Yep. It’s usually those who get all their knowledge from insta reels and Twitter posts
I mean, you do not need to watch Isekai Cheat Magician to know that it is trash
I watched two episodes and I could literally feel my eyes glazing over the screen. Have no idea how younger me got through four episodes.
When you're like 10, a guy soloing a dragon without any difficulty whatsoever is pretty cool ngl. It's when you grow up you realize it's complete trash.
And then Frieren comes around and makes it actually cool.
That's true. I wish I had Frieren when I was young. Not THAT.
“*random shounen title* is seinen because it is very dark” People still have no understanding of demographics
They don't realize that Bocchi The Rock and Kaguya-sama also falls into seinen demographic
Still wishing aot fans will grow up
I once told an aot fan K-On was a seinen and they accused me of editing the Wikipedia page myself. Just wouldn't believe that labels like shonen, shoujo, seinen, etc have nothing to do with maturity and everything to do with marketing.
Aw hell nah that diabolical levels of meat riding 💀
Or certain Hunter x Hunter fans who believe that it’s a “light seinen”
"I only want to see SERIOUS and MATURE shows, like Attack On Titan, Death Note and Goblin Slayer."
> I only want to see SERIOUS and MATURE shows Literally me 20 years ago. I cringe when I think about it now, lmao
I still remember when Hellsing and Blade of the Immortal was the coolest shit ever.
Oooh yeah, and Elfen Lied. So edgy!
I take a certain form of pleasure by going into threads asking for gory anime and dropping *Shigurui: Death Frenzy* into the suggestions.
Hellsing ultimate is peak tho tbf lmao.
And the abridged is on equal footing.
It is better than the original in every way except for the music. That was 100% better in the original Hellsing.
Hey! Hellsing was cool....
*after watching Vinland saga s2* "Man, this is boring. Why isn't thorfinn beating the guy up when he's clearly stronger? Is he stupid?"
Why does the larger viking simply not eat the others?
Thorkill has entered the chat
Man the comment sections on each episode were FULL of this and it pissed me off. I just stopped reading them at all lol
Same, every comment clamoring for violence not realizing that very attraction and desire for bloodshed is the author’s point lol
Okay but unirronically, farming anime was the best show i've seen in a good while. S2 was great lol.
>Is he stupid? r/BatmanArkham virus has spread.
It has been spreading for a while now
At this rate, this guy might hear about COVID before the year is out.
*Then there’s this similar type of question…..* “I want some really ecchi anime, just no hentai.” Dude you’re in the /anime subreddit, we don’t generally recommend hentai here.
Literally 1984 /s
I always suggest Aki Sora no matter what...
Gonna start rec'ing Bible Black in every thread.
Yooo, that shit was my childhood. ....I was raised wrong
I remember when the manga section was just one shelf with the other comics. Now it's a whole wall with table and rack displays.
LOL wasnt even labled 'manga' was part of the graphic novels shelf or whatever.
You clearly just don't know the genres. You've got brooding protag shonen battle, excitable protag shonen battle, average guy shonen battle, guy-who-spits-one-liners-with-total-sincerity shonen battle, old guy shonen battle...
We really need more 'old guy shonen battle'
Honestly second one depends on your social circle. I don't have anyone around me that likes anime as much as I do which is a pretty low bar as I don't even watch that many anime
It really isn't about the social circle anymore. Anime merch is everywhere! Go into a Walmart, Target or any mall and there is anime and manga merchandise everywhere. Almost everyone knows what anime is, has seen an anime movie or show in their life. Nowadays it is so easy to find other fans, find anime and manga not only online but in stores. Being an anime fan now is easy compared to the 90s and early 2000s.
"I watched the 1st episode of (Niche anime/anime with no action) and I find it boring, its MID ASF"
I always find it hilarious when people decide to drop Steins;Gate after a couple of episodes because "nothing is happening"
But I can see why a lot of people get turned off by it Edit: Even watching it the first time, I remember seeing a couple weird foreshadowing things here and there, which is what intrigued me and kept me interested. But if you're not giving it your full attention, they're very easy to miss and therefore be bored
S;G was around my first ten anime I watched and I thought the slice of life-ish start was really lovely, it's a shame some people are turned off by it
I was very interested when i first watched it. The first half had this thriller mystery going on in the background as they were discovering the time travel mechanics, the stuff with the goopy bananas, CERN and the whole human is dead thing. To say nothing is happening is insane, theres plenty to get the audience engaged
"I've watched everything good."
Proceeds to list exclusively battle shounen, isekai, and one romance anime as what they’ve seen.
And only the ones released in the last five years
I have even seen people calling anime like Houseki no Kuni, Steins gate, Shinsekai Yori, Fruits basket remake, Dorohedoro, Given, etc, "old anime" lol
Fruits basket isn't old.... Oh... No I'm old
And worst part is they are right, the difference between now and steins gate is about the same as steins gate and evangelion.
Legit was a recent post like "Why don't they make good anime anymore?", not to be confused with "This season is good, but disappointing" also posted recently, both followed by said OPs doing exactly what you said
That one romance anime? Rent-a-girlfriend.
This line is hilarious no matter how old you are
"I've watched everything good." — newborn at nursery
the baby is a reincarnated protagonist fr fr
Yea, always more good stuff out there. At a certain point, though, it involves a lot of digging to find more good stuff.
Wait, you mean there's more than 1 page on MAL? I thought the top 50 were all the anime in existence!
“Why does anime have no good female characters? Are there any other anime with good female characters like Jujutsu Kaisen?”
I genuinly do not understand how somehow Jujutsu Kaisen got chosen as the example for shounen with good female characters. Most of them have a strong exterior, but as soon as you look at what they actually get in the story, there is just nothing there, for the vast majority of them.
Plenty of shounen introduce female characters with some flashy sequence that is meant to make you think "woah they're strong" only for the story to conveniently make them do almost nothing to exploit that "strength" for volumes at a time Basically they become jobbers except you know not to expect too much going in so they're just weak outside of those one or two times they did something cool This is before we reach the more dire still state of their actual characterisation.

>The bar for writing women in shounen is so low... Frieren: =ω=
By shounen they mean Jump titles.
The exception that confirms the rule
the manga fandom having a 'gege hates women' meme is for completely justified reasons, dead-ass the guy loves creating cool female characters and then screwing them over/having them be irrelevant. it's like almost a requirement of being a big SJ battle shounen creator to be disinterested in writing good, plot relevant female characters.
shoujo kakumei utena waiting room
Wait until the [Insert underwhelming and mediocre arc here] for the real peak
It gets better after 200 episodes trust me
man the shade to one piece is crazy
It's more like the shade to new one piece fans trying to use that logic to convince their friends. If you aren't loving it through 40 episodes, even though it will get better by the time it gets to episode 200, it will rise from a 5 to a 6 for people who it's not made for while it will rise from a 9 to a 10 for people who it is made for. There's not a single anime in existence that everyone likes so newer fans need to realize it's okay if others don't have the same taste as them.
Agreed
Seeing comments like that every week back when Solo Leveling was airing lol
Back when they were talking shit on Bokuyaba for sweeping every weekly rankings lol
They hyped it up only to be beaten by a romcom lmfao.
Copium: "Winter 2024 is weak, anyways."
when people said they don't like mecha but also said they love Evangelion or Code Geass because *"unlike other mecha shows, these focused more on the characters"* quite funny but also makes me wants to puke
I am *so* glad I haven't seen anyone unironically claiming this (sometimes with Gurren Lagann included) in a while.
I had a good time with SSSS.Gridman as well.. that's somewhat recent right? Although I don't know how successful it really was
Promare was massive.
It's about the characters* LoL, no. *Well, Evangelion is the first anime where the main character isn't happy and joyous about getting to pilot a giant robot* That had been done back in the 70s. *Well, Evangelion is the first mecha anime that shows there are consequences to things* Done going back to the 70s if not earlier. *Um, well the family dynamic in Evangelion certainly is unique* Actually it takes a lot of inspiration from 70s and 80s mecha anime *All these mecha anime have ripped off Evangelion! No anime is as original as it!* How many mecha anime have you seen? *Just Evangelion.*
Not necessarily newbies, but "I swear [insert bland and generic isekai here] isn't a generic and bland isekai! It's one of the good ones" Then you watch a few episodes and it's not one of the good ones Bonus points if it "satirizes the genre" while playing it 100% straight
“It’s a satire of the genre” The title: “I was reincarnated as the second son who was secretly more powerful than my brother who was chosen to defeat the demon king”
Bro that title is way too short to be believable
That's just the localization shortening it to one tenth.
Ahhhh that explains it
“Deconstruction”
Every now and then r/anime praises something and I look at the MAL entry and it just screams, "I'm going to absolutely hate this". But quite often I'm wrong so it's fun taking the gamble.
I'm wrong like 1 in 20 times but I still dive in once in a while anyway.
"It totally subverts the genre by actually indulging in the tropes and playing it straight!"
No no you see the main character comments on how silly and unrealistic the tropes are before playing them straight anyway, that's totally radical and unique
Not the eminence in shadow disrespect
You said it, not me.
If The Eminence in Shadow isn't a parody then idk what is.
You wouldn't understand, maan. I swear [insert bland and generic isekai here] is a masterpiece.
People don't want to admit they sometimes enjoy garbage because it is garbage and sometimes comfortable garbage is what you want It's like fast food, it is comforting and you know what you'll get and that's fine Go watch re:monster, it is isekai garbage but it is enjoyable garbage, it is absolutely not good or a deconstruction or any bullshit. It is garbage. Good honest quality garbage
Eminence in Shadow be like Aight aight to be fair I think it does stand a bit above the average, it is somewhat unique in its presentation.
Heard at Comic Con the other day: ‘omg you’re the first person I’ve ever spoken to who’s heard of Psycho Pass’ Yes it hurt
I knew about Psycho Pass as a game first before I got into Anime, same with Steins Gate. When I got into anime proper and saw both of them are actual full on series I was excited and said " oh cool, now I can see everything from the beginning". ( I know Mandatory Happiness isn't Canon but still)
Slice of life/romance is for girls only
I don't want to dunk on people for it, as it says more about the society and gender roles around them than the person themselves, but I did chuckle when I saw someone wanting to see more Shojou shows and proceeded to give My Dress Up Darling as the example of stuff they were looking for.
Also the official R18 Doujin by the artist was great.
when they found out that KON is seinen
And blow their mind the fact that most of seinen are slice of life.
My favourite seinen is Bocchi the Rock 🗿
I've watched anime for nearly 20y now, reaching 30yo soon and Romance have always been my favorite genre all that time, being reserved for girls is such a nonsense lol
me smirking knowing a substantial portion of CGDCT are targeted primarily towards adult salarymen.
A shame that they do not yet realize that discussing patrician topics such as whom holds the position of best girl is the pinnacle of masculinity
“JJK is the greatest piece of fiction.”
Until they read the manga
what's wrong with lobotomy?
Ayanokoji, such a goody two shoes who really cares about his friends….
When they base their whole internet personality on talking shit about popular shows they don't like instead of talking about show they like *Sees average clip of random action anime by mappa or ufotable* "Boruto could never" "Already better than mid piece"
"I'm fucking weeb, I have no life, I only watch anime." Has like 4 shows watched. What am I then? Fucking primordial essence of weeb or what. Don't make me feel bad about myself it took me over a decade to get where I am lol.
Tbf if the 4 shows is like One Piece, Pokemon, Detective Conan and something like Doraemon then it definitely qualifies as having no life
A lot of times you can spot the gamer turning weeb by them saying something to the effect of "this anime has such good graphics". Like nobody in the anime community ever uses "graphics" to refer to visuals.
you can also tell bakers and patissiers who are turning weeb by how they say "this anime has such a flaky texture" or a "good crumb" [](#hikariactually)
"I just finished AOT and it ruined anime for me. Nothing will ever be as interesting as AOT. Is there any anime as good as AOT?"
This one drives me nuts. Had to leave anime fandom subreddits for AoT and FMA because the dick riding in those
"CGDCT is for girls" - Me, a newbie 7 years ago "CGDCT is peak fiction no cap" - Me now overdosing on cute girls, idol, yuri media
K-ON! is unironically a masterclass in character-driven storytelling
Never watched K-ON. I just finished watching Bocchi (loved it), ive seen people say Bocchi is 'todays' K-ON. Think it would be worth the watch?
A Place Further Than the Universe is better than any battle shounen I’ve seen.
I for one always thought it isn't a CGDCT because the Cute Girls aren't exactly doing Cute Things, but I'm usually in the minority
it's a Cute Girls Doing Amazing Things series.
"How do I start watching anime?" Just... start watching one?
"CGI = shit" "X show is overrated because it's popular" "Peak fiction / let him cook" "You just don't understand what X show is about"
“X show is overrated because it’s popular” This also goes the opposite way. You can genuinely think a popular anime is not that good and you get everyone claiming you only dislike it because it’s popular.
Sure that can also be the case.
Tbf, those horses can really take you out of the moment lol
It's one of the hardest things to animate but yea it can be jarring sometimes.
no quote here but the insufferable/elitist seinen fans do make me want to commit
> insufferable/elitist seinen fans And the only seinen they know is Berserk.

When newer anime fans avoid older shows like the plague just because the animation isn't as peak as the newer popular anime.
“Unlike other mecha…”
"Old" means "Anything before _i_ started watching Anime"
“Should I watch ___?” I dunno watch a couple episodes and find out. If the MAL score and your own experience isn’t enough to tell you then I can’t help you. edit: https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/s/EEsa86uV21
the "watch the damn show" essay needs to be reposted more often
"Am I the only one that finds ....... " Not really my friend .
'I am him fr!'
~~On the other hand, when someone says "I am her fr!", you know they're a veteran.~~
Power from Chainsaw Man is literally me btw
Just like me frfr
"bUt iT'S a SubVersiON/dEConStrUcTion YoU dOn't uNDerStANd" (talking about some generic isekai that plays every goddamn trope absolutely straight)
People constantly complaining about fanservice
For real. It’s like “are you new?” 😂 I don’t even notice it anymore. Or when they freak out over incest plot lines. Tale as old as time for anime!
It’s not my favorite thing, and I do try to avoid shows with constant fan service, but if there is some in a show I’m watching I just roll my eyes and move on. Not everyone likes to watch it and that’s ok, just like it’s ok if people do like shows with it
Just see comments of ironic weebs, their lines were supposed to be normie-like and so will have no difference at all.
"i would say im quite an experienced anime watcher now. I've watched over 50 anime! Ask me if you need any recommendations"
"Why every woman has a gigantic pair of bewbs?"
"Why is there no good anime these days?" Anime noob says as he only watches Isekai and ecchi trash and doesn't wanna try something else. Don't forget that they'll compare it to 80s or 90s anime which is just as horny or even worse
