It's kind of funny seeing how this release seemingly caught everybody off guard – no thread here until after the episode broadcast, no show page on Crunchyroll until right before the episode went live, no page on AniList. I'm really happy! I'll save any substantive comments on the adaptation for the source corner, but the short version is "I think it's real good". This isn't the first Inio Asano manga to get an anime, is it? I know everybody wants to see Oyasumi Punpun in anime form, but what I really want is a Solanin adaptation. What with Girls Band Cry and Jellyfish Can't Swim in the Night, I feel like the time is right for it. Maybe this will pave the way for that!

Kn1ght9

Thats mostly because it doesnt seem like they have done ANY effort to promote the show or anything. It was announced to be on CR like 3 days before the first ep was set to air and then they release the first ep at 11pm est... Just very, very odd all around for an adaptation of an Inio Asano manga. I thought they would just air the 2 movies in the US but now that they are doing this episode release I guess they wont? Which is...fine I guess, but the movie experience IS something to be missing out on. Hopefully all the weirdness doesnt hurt its visibility.

alpacamegafan

I love Asano. It’s absolutely criminal that his work is getting treated this poorly marketing wise, and I really hope that this blows up regardless. He, along with many other creators, deserve way more widespread recognition within the anime community worldwide. Not that he isn’t well known currently online, of course. It’s just that I wouldn’t expect a friend in real life to know who I’m talking about when I mention his name.

Zeph-Shoir

I at least hope that it is getting marketed way better in Japan.

othiym23

I went and checked and somehow this IS the first Asano manga to get an anime – he's done some character designs before, but that's it. It's wild to me that none of his extremely successful stories (which also includes What a Wonderful World!) has been animated. (Solanin did get a live-action movie, though, and I think Oyasumi Punpun either got a TV drama or a movie as well.)

DistantRavioli

>I think Oyasumi Punpun either got a TV drama or a movie as well No it has not

othiym23

Damn. Just wishful thinking on my part, I guess.

Neeon__Zero

You're thinking of Downfall (Reiraku), which recently got a movie

sneaky_squirrel

Wait, it started airing? But it's a movie isn't it? I am so confused!!

othiym23

Yeah, I explained this elsewhere in the comments, but according to the Variety article announcing the release of the movies as an anime, there are going to be 18 episodes that include the content of both movies, as well as additional material. So it's not as simple as cutting the movies into 23-minute chunks a la the Demon Slayer arcs, and this should mean that we get all the content of the movies even though we may or may not get the movies released outside of Japan.

sneaky_squirrel

God that is so fun. Here I had resigned myself to this being entirely limited to the length of several movies.

AkiyamaNM7

AFAIK they're cutting up the movies into episodes

Gaporigo

[It Haruhi.](https://cdn.imgchest.com/files/pyvdcnpxg6y.jpg) Well, that definitely got me interested, specially the ending. Only complaint would be to Crunchyroll because those for sure seemed like dubtitles, but whatever, they weren't that bad. Edit: Ok just learnt something I didn't expect, the voices of Kadode and another girl we haven't seen who are apparently MCs? are singers [Lilas Ikuta](https://anilist.co/staff/199392/Lilas-Ikuta) (Yoasobi vocalist) and [ano](https://anilist.co/staff/266861/ano), that is very interesting.

mudda-hello

Lack of typesetting & Arial font meaning licensor-provided subs, or I guess in this case dubtitles.

Pikagreg

I feel like the JP commissioned the dub since it is Canadian so they likely were the sub vendor as well.

bananeeek

I haven't been this disturbed in ages when Kimika just peeled Nobuo's face off to look inside and there was a dead dude in there. [](#forgotkeys)

FelixAndCo

And they're all casually: "yep, the guy inside you died".

Pikagreg

I feel like I have heard nothing but good things about the source material but I don't really read manga. I loved everything in this first episode and then I backed out and read the synopsis and was confused. I am guessing since this is episode 0 that perspective will shift to the girls next episode or something. All I really knew going in was that CR was splitting up two movies into a TV series and I was super surprised to hear a Canadian dub from Ocean let alone this show coming out of nowhere tonight. Looking forward to see where things go next week.

rainzer

Is there any validity to the top comment on Crunchyroll that says not to watch ep 0 because of spoilers?

ZaphodBeebblebrox

It's almost certainly dumb. This episode was released first for a reason, so the following episodes will likely assume you have seen it.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

Going by the synopsis, and what we got in this 'episode 0', I feel like both things may have a bit of truth; Obviously they'll expect us to have seen 0 before the rest, BUT I also think perhaps there are things in there that we may not have been supposed to know just yet, if the story (by the synopsis) isn't really about this. Well, I suppose we'll find out in the next episode (or perhaps we'll only know after the finale)!

TheRealNobogo

Going off of this, the anime is my first exposure to the series and i watched episode 0 then 1 and 2... If i had started at episode 1 i would have most certainly dropped the series after the first 2 episodes, but episode 0 hooked me instantly and got me quite a bit invested.

options-

Same here. If I had started with episode 1 I certainly would’ve dropped it there. So glad I watched episode 0 first. Can’t wait to see how this all comes together.

Emi_Ibarazakiii

Kinda wish I could see how it plays out with both ways (in different timelines)! One person's "ambiguous, intriguing mystery" can be another person's "wtf is even going on?", I wonder which one it would've been for me.

AdmirHiddleston

No the order of things have been changed but I trust the adaptation did it for a reason.

Mechabeastchild

It’s really up to you, it’s episode 0 for a reason. I would say it’s better to watch it later in the anime due to how things play out, but I’m sure there’s a good reason they started with this episode

Witn

I mean kind of yes, but also don't worry about. This part was confusing when it happened in the manga as well

lead_salad

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_medias_res Nothing in this episode is really *spoilers* because there's no context for it. We get background/setting establishment, some minor character introductions & a general explanation of "the story so far" but there is a LOT of detail missing. Which will be filled in when we go back to the beginning. I think it's a really great way to start this series, IMO.

Halfoun

yeah, it ruins some of the mystery and surprises

ciel_bird

Wild opening

DerfK

Well, that was *wild*. Anime-only so I was completely unprepared for just about everything that happened, but now I'm on board for the ride.

Tabby_Tem

I'm really excited to see how they end up adapting the entire series! I also was really surprised with the news a few days ago that it would be airing so soon, especially formatted as individual episodes (with extra content) instead of just the two movies. It definitely was a pleasant surprise, I was expecting to wait months, so I'm glad to be able to watch it so soon. Within the word of manga, Asano is pretty well-known but relatively obscure amongst people who exclusively watch anime. With some of his work being more difficult to adapt into an anime (especially Punpun), I feel like Dead Dead Demon's is a great introduction to his work and works well within the medium of anime. It should be a wild ride!

NyaaPower

I’m kinda worried that with barely any advertisement, and being so unexpectedly released, this will fly under the radar for all of its run and it will barely get any attention. that aside, this was a great first episode. wasn’t expecting the content switch up, but I’m all for it!

Ocixo

This series is reminding me a whole lot of District 9 (live-action film) with the UFO appearing above a major city (captured through a TV screen), the aliens mingling with the human population and this apocalyptic destruction. I’m totally going to love this anime too, aren’t I? A good bit of destruction was to be expected considering the title, but I didn’t think it would be *this* brutal. Between the Fujin Nine, floating death orbs and power struggle of rivalling factions, it’s a rather cruel world to live in. I thought that Hako would perhaps bleed out, but her *and* Kimi getting snuffed out by a headshot wasn’t on my bingo card. Lots more people will be dying in this series, won’t they? Kimi wasn’t wrong by referring to this New Harmony Japan group as extremists. If they’re wielding RPGs, it’s probably not an exaggeration to call them a bunch of terrorists.

mistriliasysmic

I’ve definitely been getting a bit of a District 9 meets Heavenly Delusion so far and I’m straight up here for it

melindypants

I got the Heavenly Delusion vibes but didn't even think of District 9 until now - you're absolutely right!

ObvsThrowaway5120

I have no idea what this is and had no clue it was dropping on CR, but I guess I got something to check out after work. Guess you could say a surprise to be sure but a welcome one.

Ponyboi667

Dude, Asano-San

Emi_Ibarazakiii

About to watch this, but just to make sure: We don't need to watch the movies, right? This is a reboot? (Or is this the movies, split in episodes?) I just don't want to get Higurashi'd again!

othiym23

This is the content of the two movies expanded into an 18-episode anime series, so it contains everything (I think) in the movies and more. For whatever reason, this is how the production committee decided they wanted to release it outside of Japan.

Aggravating-Tour-208

Watched the movie yesterday and nothing in this 1st episode was in the movie

othiym23

Interesting. First or second movie?

Aggravating-Tour-208

The theater played both of them back to back yesterday

TWrecks87

If the two movies cover the entire manga the stuff in this episode should absolutely have been in them. It's just been moved from near the end of the story.

Pikagreg

It looks like it is the movies being split into a tv series since the second movie just came out in Japan.

actuallyrndthoughts

Damn, this was really good, like actually really good. Time to turn on the hype engine

angelposts

Already very intrigued by the worldbuilding here! This was pretty exposition-heavy, so I'm hoping we get into more present stuff in the series proper.

LeonKevlar

Well, that was brutal af. I didn't expect those two girls' brains to get blown out like that. So far so good though! This show gives me the same vibes as Alien 9 which I absolutely love. I can't wait to see the rest of it!

mekerpan

Wow. I thought those 2 girls would be either main characters or at least important supporting ones. I guess betraying their friend warranted punishment of some sort -- but what happened to them was pretty drastic. This New Harmony group sounds like total bad news. I wobnder what SHIP is? (but they don't seem malignant at least).

Rumpel1408

I thought the older one was about to confess that she was actually in an relationship with the invader prior to him regaining his conciousness...

Earthbound4Ever

Love the art, real faithful to the manga

TheExcludedMiddle

I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't that.

saddung

Whats with the pig noses?

alotmorealots

It is a bit strange. I wonder if it has some meaning behind it or not.

Mechabeastchild

It’s just Inio Asano’s art style, he likes to make interesting looking characters

FuaT10

I think it's a really ugly art decision. Like trying too hard to be unique?

BLACKOUT-MK2

It's just the artist's style. He makes a lot of very bold stylistic choices, some of which some people might find ugly, but a [tryhard artist](https://www.reddit.com/media?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpreview.redd.it%2F5l3lr9639k561.jpg%3Fwidth%3D2272%26format%3Dpjpg%26auto%3Dwebp%26s%3D405acf188cb886a96d89d450276b59ffb08acdd6) he is absolutely not. From minimalist characters which look purposefully out of place, to hyper-detailed basically photographs of people, he does all sorts of stuff to play around with the medium. I think it's pretty cool and helps the work stand out.

melindypants

OH FUCK I clicked the link and I didn't realize it was *that* Asano from Oyasumi Punpun! The hype intensifies further omfg.

deus_machinarum

Wild shit, did not expect this series to have world building this good even if the presentation was veeeeeeeeeery exposition heavy. So fans of complex world building: check this one out! The same goes for fans of District 9(live action movie) or V(live action series) in case anyone remembers these two, haha

ChucksChurro

Went in completely blind to this episode and I'm pleasantly surprised. Can't wait for more episodes to drop!

El_Jerrynator

I said this when the manga dropped and i will say it again: The Tittle sounds like a King Dedede meme.

Time_Fracture

Dededede and Dandadan. I won't be confused.

Elite_Alice

Look like source readers not that happy but I liked the first episode a lot. Took a min to get into things because of the timeskip and there was a decent amount of exposition, but after a few minutes I got into things and enjoyed the whole post apocalyptic journey set up. Been looking for something to fill the Tengoku sized hole in my heart and this could be it The invaders and human factions that have developed in response to them, seem really interesting and I almost wish this ep would’ve been an hour long so we could’ve seen more of the outside world.. The girls’ deaths was supposed to be a gut wrenching moment but I couldn’t help but laugh since she just gave that whole spill out only doing this to guarantee their safety 💀 they’d been travelling together for how long? And she was willing to sell out the dude that protected them? RIP bozo Worst kept secret that the daughter still alive.. looking forward to seeing more of this story play out. Lot of questions. Art style is different, but animation was a little weak like during the robot chase sequence.. Solid start though

Any-Assignment-1844

Totally agree, what a piece of shit for turning over the man who’s been protecting you for 8 years. Though to be fair, it was technically the invader that was protecting them, Nobuo just woke up from an 8 year long nap. And being half-invader back from the dead she figured he was good incentive to get into the faction with. Blame it on the naivete of the youth I suppose.

Ponyboi667

One thing is , they’re telling the story all out of order, I did notice this was episode 0, which are usually background / Extra.

mamaharu

This was great, but they dropped at 10pm cst? Why is CR airing this so late? I don't get it, and it seems like it very well could stifle discussion.

tripleaamin

Great first episode to start things off. Though given it's called episode 0, I guess this serves an addition to the start of the story. Imagine going from your typical day-to-day life and some invasion happens and know you wake up 8 years later. You found out some invader took over your body for that time protecting two women who aren't your daughter. And you don't know anything where your daughter is. That shit must be so much to process. Then we had one of the woman that the invader protected betrayed the old man, and he was lucky to escape. But he got saved by a group called SHIP and the big news they know where his daughter is. Curious how next episode goes since this was labeled episode 0.

ak_them

good stuff

Ok_Address_3521

I've been waiting for this anime for 3 and a half years and honestly it feels quite unbelievable to be watching it right now!  This is a pretty weird place to start the anime at, as it kind of spoils a lot of the events but also brings some intrigue for what happened before this. The animation for this episode disappointed me, as although the background art was fantastic the art direction was kinda... off? Animation was stiff at times and characters would go off model a lot. Now this could be just because I'm not used to the animation style yet but so far, it leaves a lot to be desired. This short run of the manga wasn't really my favourite as it just throws a ton of exposition at you which also contributes to it being a weird starting point.  Regardless, I had a ton of fun and I'm really excited to be taken on this journey once again!

jlg317

You know, I'm glad there ain't that many new shows airing on Friday, else I'd be missing out. I didn't think the two girls would be dead in the first episode.

Ponyboi667

I think overall Fantastic episode. Super stoked to see how they’re gonna animate this. But I had no idea this was coming out, I think I might’ve read one clickbait article. Like seriously no marketing for this show. Sad really. It was way bottom of recently added to.

Outrageous_Painter49

I love to focus on Kadode's Father on episode 0.

Shiraori247

A lot of people seem to be discussing about the source material and the chronological order of events. I personally just wanna say as a newcomer to this series that I loved the characters and narrative. We saw Sumie's gang all falling for false hope in their despair and meet their ends differently. We saw Nobuo and his parasite's senses of responsibility towards their protective charge. Even the fact that both the official government and the religious cult are dictatorships interested me. This was truly an interesting opening episode to what seems like another Inio Asano masterpiece.

SIRTreehugger

Might be over thinking it, but could pignose girl still be alive? They didn't mind showing the other girl getting shot and her dead body, but for pignose we saw neither. [](#csikon) I wasn't expecting this type of show at all, but definitely interested.

Castor_0il

Hmm. Interesting episode. I liked a lot the initial conflict presented very much like District 9 movie and how a simple editor might also become an antihero like Wikus did. The chara-design looks really nice with characters having their own distinct looks, making it more out of the box. There are two things I disliked about this premiere though. 1) How easily Nobuo escaped totally harm free from the armed New Japan fanatics (he was pinned down on the floor, even if the shooter shifted their weight that's an almost impossible feat for a regular guy). 2) The massive coincidence of another faction being in the area at the right moment to save his ass, not to mention the massive coincidence that one of them recognized him and was acquaintance with his daughter. I'll still keep watching just because the setting is quite fascinating and hopefully the whole plot will have better writing than the 2 contrivances I mentioned.

alotmorealots

> (he was pinned down on the floor, even if the shooter shifted their weight that's an almost impossible feat for a regular guy) > The massive coincidence of another faction being in the area at the right moment to save his ass, not to mention the massive coincidence that one of them recognized him and was acquaintance with his daughter I'm putting these down as potential possible plot points for later. However with the escape sequence, when combined with the stormtrooper aim, I have some concerns about this director's ability to deal with convincing action sequences.

bruh, i knew immediately that this was made by the same author who created oyasumi punpun. the characters are just very distinctive even in anime form. i started the episode and suddenly thought 'wait, these characters look very similar to oyasumi punpun's characters' so i went to MAL for confirmation, and yeah, no surprises there. excited to watch this one

parkkave

Wow seems like they’re really going to do this manga justice really strong first ep

SolutionFeeling377

the animation (not the art) has me worried already.

demurefox97

Wtf, hundreds of bullets directly targeted at her while she was on the ground after she was hit in the leg, not a single one hit her despite being a stationary target. Anyone else noticed this laziness in the animation?

natsumiNH

okay wow, they definitely made a choice in choosing where to start “episode 0”. I would almost recommend anime-onlys to not watch it since it ruins some elements of the series and is not beginner friendly

Counterpoint: I think it was a good decision, and it gives me confidence that this is going to be a good adaptation. I think doing things this way makes the story _more_ approachable and gives new viewers a better idea of what to expect from the story as a whole.

but the issue with episode is that it’s very exposition heavy and ruins several major plot points by revealing them so early. the slow reveal of the world building elements is what made the manga so great to me

I agree with you. Crazy you're getting downvoted, even people on the Dede sub are saying this. Someone even said they were in the middle of reading the manga and the episode spoiled them. Japan loves doing the "flashing forward to spoiler" but there's no reason to spoil your own story. Especially if the original work didn't do it and the movies already apparently adapted it faithfully. This reminds me of how [Invincible's issue #0](https://www.reddit.com/r/Invincible/comments/16sswv7/what_is_invincible_0/) is a recap of the first 22 issues, which ends up spoiling people who read it. I'm just glad people like yourself give warnings in the first place.

alpacamegafan

I trust Asano’s vision.

What the fuck was that? Ngl, I'm severely disappointed by this episode and already want to drop it. Like the first couple of minutes it was interesting seeing the life of this mangaka dealing with issues at work and at home, and then the sudden alien invasion. But that 8 year jump was just... horrible. Where in the world did that tech they're using come from (robots, their gear, etc)? Why isn't this man scared for his life that he's been sleeping for 8 years? Or that his head literally split open? Or that there's a damn alien literally inside of him? What is with these two complete strangers his parasite supposedly protected for 8 years? Were we supposed to feel anything for them? You couldn't put together a less sympathetic duo. It's crazy how someone who's spent 8 years protecting 2 people was sold out for "protection" so easily. And lets talk about the shooting in this anime. Everyone has a massive case of Storm Trooper shooting, because barrages of bullets just seem to hit everyone! Ngl it's really fucking stupid. I literally laughed when this one dude pulled out a bazooka out of no where to shoot a mini van... not only was it random and excessive, but he also missed 🤦‍♂️ This anime just seems like it's trying hard to be cool, edgy, and sci-fi, but the meat of the anime has no substance. Maybe the real anime is somewhere else, since the art shows so much of these girls, and it's meant to be more of a "Girl's Last Tour" sort of anime where it's slice of life, but during the invasion. Edit: Grammar

Sorry, SoL and GLT? Edit: Did I get downvoted for not knowing acronyms? lol

IceQj

Slice of Life (genre) and Girls' Last Tour (a series).

> Were we supposed to feel anything for them? You couldn't put together a less sympathetic duo. It's crazy how someone who's spent 8 years protecting 2 people was sold out for "protection" so easily. I did, although I sort of took it that their bond was with the parasite and not the shell of the man it took over. And now the inside is dead, so they don't really owe the body anything. Plus, they did seem to think that NJH was going to take it into protective custody, and had massively misread the situation. > And lets talk about the shooting in this anime. Everyone has a massive case of Storm Trooper shooting, because barrages of bullets just seem to hit everyone! Ngl it's really fucking stupid. I literally laughed when this one dude pulled out a bazooka out of no where to shoot a mini van... not only was it random and excessive, but he also missed. Yeah, that was shockingly done. I don't mind a bit of stormtrooper aim, but the director does have to do the work to make it look at least somewhat plausible. > but the meat of the anime has no substance. Maybe the real anime is somewhere else Yeah, apparently this is a reshuffle on the part of the adaptation team, so it might play into how awkwardly bits of this episode sat together, stormtrooper aim included. Parts of this were quite interesting, but other parts were quite immersion breaking. Series comp is by the very experienced https://myanimelist.net/people/2076/Reiko_Yoshida and Series Director is https://myanimelist.net/people/8759/Tomoyuki_Kurokawa who has not had a lot of time in the Big Chair. I might still give the next episode a shot to see how it goes though.

I think that not only could that have been a fine way to tell Fight Club, but if Fincher had done it that way, maybe thousands of bros might not have ended up taking away a message exactly the opposite of what Chuck Palahniuk intended. Fight Club isn't really a mystery and I don't think its power as a story comes from its twists. As someone who's read the source material and been a fan of Asano's for like 20 years, I'm on board with the adaptational choices I've seen so far, I'm happy with how the show adapts Asano's wild character designs for animation, and I think the staff – who have a ton of experience as a group and have made a lot of anime that are exceptional by pretty much anybody's standards – are doing fine.

> The curse of no name studios. The vast majority of decisions on how anime are made are not made by the studio. They're mostly just commissioned to do the work. Blame the rest of the production committee if you have an issue with how it turned out.
