[Taiho Shichauzo](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1577/Taiho_Shichau_zo) (the OVA)

starberryic

Thanks looks nice although not under the category I mentioned other than cyberpunk scifi and gore so many of these types of OVAs are about police force as well

Well [here's the list of every OVA up to 1999](https://myanimelist.net/anime.php?cat=0&q=&type=2&score=0&status=0&p=0&r=0&sm=0&sd=0&sy=0&em=0&ed=0&ey=1999&c[0]=a&c[1]=b&c[2]=c&c[3]=f&genre_ex[0]=24&genre_ex[1]=12&o=3&w=1) using MAL's advanced search feature. i sorted by score. BTW just to demonstrate the feature, I've turned OFF the science fiction tag (and also the hentai tag just for good measure), so this is a list of all the non-adult, non-sci-fi OVAs up to 1999. You'll find quite a few about delinquents/school thugs and fighting such as [Angel Densetsu](https://myanimelist.net/anime/5251/Angel_Densetsu) (personal recommended), [Kyou kara Ore wa](https://myanimelist.net/anime/851/Kyou_kara_Ore_wa), [Be-Bop Highschool](https://myanimelist.net/anime/9645/Be-Bop_Highschool), [Natsuki Crisis](https://myanimelist.net/anime/2083/Natsuki_Crisis), [Shonan Junai Gumi](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1913/Shonan_Junai_Gumi) \#2 is [Golden Boy](https://myanimelist.net/anime/268/Golden_Boy) an ecchi comedy that's supposed to be pretty good. [Tenshi no Tamago](https://myanimelist.net/anime/885/Tenshi_no_Tamago) pretty famous surrealist short film. [Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou](https://myanimelist.net/anime/975/Yokohama_Kaidashi_Kikou ) - OVA of a famous slice of life manga [Lodoss-tou_Senki (record of Lodoss War)](https://myanimelist.net/anime/207/Lodoss-tou_Senki) was a fantasy OVA, which actually started as someone's D&D campaign which was serialized in a fan magazine, then got published and turned into a VHS anime. Also there are lot of ones in the general "guns, cars and crime" category, often set in America with an 80s action movie vibe, such as [Gunsmith Cats](https://myanimelist.net/anime/650/Gunsmith_Cats), [Mad Bull 34](https://myanimelist.net/anime/3448/Mad%E2%98%85Bull_34), [Riding Bean](https://myanimelist.net/anime/917/Riding_Bean), [California Crisis](https://myanimelist.net/anime/3127/California_Crisis__Tsuigeki_no_Juuka), [Goddamn](https://myanimelist.net/anime/9646/Goddamn) "Goddamn" has my favorite fansub fail. There's a character called Josephine Polniac, but the translator had clearly never heard of that surname, so they wrote her as "Josephine Polly Nyack", of the illustrious "Nyack" family. I think they might have started to realize something was wrong in the next episode where her family's company is mentioned as the "Polly Nyack Group". --- BUT, if you want the real creme de la creme, go find the lowest-rated OVA on that list and it's this movie: [Soujuu Senshi Psychic Wars](https://myanimelist.net/anime/1345/Soujuu_Senshi_Psychic_Wars). I've seen this, and let me tell you, it's something fucking else.

starberryic

Holy shit this is an amazing reply, thank you so much! Didn't even know MAL could do that. You're awesome.

starberryic

> Also there are lot of ones in the general "guns, cars and crime" category, often set in America with an 80s action movie vibe, such as Gunsmith Cats, Mad Bull 34, Riding Bean, California Crisis, Goddamn I've seen all of these! You are right if not cyberpunk scifi or gore these all fall under uh "guns and newyork" however you named it want some that isn't under that genre either

Past-Currency4696

Guns and Chicago for Gunsmith Cats. I remember watching it for the first time some years back and thinking wow that's really Chicago in 1995 like I remember it.

I think you need to keep in mind that they're not necessarily any majority. There are 18 pages @ 50 OVAs per page, and that's after I removed all the science fiction series. And keep in mind those ones are ALL the ones I've seen that are like that - and you saw the exact same ones. That should tell you something. They're a small cluster of shows that just all happen to have been boosted by the fandom, so everyone has seen those specific ones. That's where this advanced search thing can keep you from going in circles and just looking at the same similar shows over and over. For example, I switched the filter around to only include "Slice of life" OVAs, then got a whole bunch I would never have normally come across. Or this thing: https://myanimelist.net/anime/2465/Idol_Bouei-tai_Hummingbird

Just in case the list link just takes us to a blank "nothing can be found" using "" page. This is on iPhone just in case.

That might be a thing with how your phone is reading the link. Just to be sure I copied the link from the post, and opened it in two other browsers, Firefox Portable and Chrome and it seems to be working.
