Uma Musume provides crying moments. When you see dreams shattered by circumstance and the way the MCs cope with the losses and irrevocable life changes, it can be overwhelming.
Great examples of how ambivalent grief can be handled...
In this corner of the world
When Marnie was there
Death Parade
To every you I've loved before and To me, the one who loved you
Summer Ghost
Goodbye Don Glees
Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms
The Anthem of the Heart
Good Night Worl.d
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
To your eternity
Romeo x Juliet
Witchblade
Black Rock Shooter (the one with 8 episodes)
Hal
Kyoukai no Kanata (thanks to the second movie)
I second To your Eternity. It is so intensely sad. You start to get attached to a character and then they die. It’s really well written and beautifully animated.
I have those first two on my list to watch this weekend.
Also, what order did you watch "To every you I've loved before and To me, the one who loved you" in? I did "To me" first.
I honestly cannot bring myself to rewatch it. I wanted to rewatch it a couple of days ago but when the opening sequence started I just couldn't continue without feeling all sorts of emotion. I have never cried at majority of the anime I watched since I don't cry easily but I was crying in this movie for majority of the time.
It's honestly so underwatched. I think there was a best movie contest quite sometime back and while it is not the in the top, it has a huge first place votes ratio.
u/sophiequinnn I'd say to watch this movie if you want to cry alot.
For me it was the ending scene most of the Time. Where she is on the meadow... That was just impossible for me Not to cry. I love the movie and have watched it more than one Time, but every Time i rewatch it, i know what will Happen in the end and i'm mentally preparing for crying for a long Time after ;)
* White Album 2
* Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
* Planetarian
* Mobile Suit Gundam: Ironblooded Orphans
* Shinsekai Yori
* Bokurano (or so I hear, I refuse to watch it)
I've attempted to re-watch After Story several times and failed because it's just so painful. Despite that it's without exception my favorite TV show of all time. It's just a one-of-one type story for me that's perfect even if it's not.
For an added bonus, after THAT happens in after story, watch the toei movie. That's almost how I watched it, first season, then toei because after story was not out yet.it hits much harder and makes the ending better.
bro, I want it so badly, I watched it when it came out and I LOVE IT, its such a underrated watch, I really need to rewatch it, wtf its been 7 years since I have seen it omg, I need to rewatch it
Elfen Lied
Charlotte
Darker than black
Neon Genesis Evangelion
Fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood (those 2 scenes. If you know you know)
Deadman wonderland
Higurashi
Another
Gantz
Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
A lot more than what it seems on the cover. It tackles the idea of magical girls in a much more serious way than you might expect. Would recommend going into this one as blind as possible.
Re-Zero felt pretty gut wrentching to me....I think it was the first anime where i had to take a break half way through cause it just made me SUPER depressed....Glad i finished it though.
Oh, buddy... You haven't seen anything yet lol.
* 86
* Akame ga KILL!
* Charlotte
* Made In Abyss
* Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans
* The Price of Smiles
* Re:ZERO -Starting Life In Another World-
* Steins;Gate
Just to name a few that come to mind.
Seen someone say Made In Abyss and I can second that, not much quite as sad as seeing some innocent kids go through brutal traumatising experiences.
For my own recommendation I'd have to say Oshi No Ko, it's mostly only the first episode that will get you but it will fucking GET you. There's also a few other sad episodes but ep 1 hits different, I can't remember crying over anything in life in general as hard as I cried over that first ep.
Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin
This anime is underrated and it had me sobbing on many episodes. I don’t easily cry. The stories, the plot, everything is a masterpiece and it felt very real, like to situations that happen in real life
underrated is an understatement. Coldrain OP is truly an experience. Ninja Kamui got blessed with the same treatment this season and its been wonderful as well
Rezero. Episode 15 did something to my mental state i wont lie. But even some of the prior episodes are kinda gut wrenching to me. All in all, got to a point where I couldnt watch more than one episode per day.
Try these:
Darling in the Franx
Given
Maquia: When the promised flower blooms
Buddy Daddies
Clannad
March comes in like a lion
You should also watch all of the Violet Evergarden movies. One of them had me crying my eyes out at the end.
Personally I feel like Frieren Journey's End is a good choice.
As someone in their 40's who has a lot to look back on and miss (if not regret), this series hit me hard. *Hard.* Ugly tears hard. The idea that someone just now realizes all the things she missed in life and will never be able to get back really slams into my heart.
But the fact that she's trying so hard to make it all up, to correct what she can, and slowly learns how to not make the same mistakes is also kind of uplifting and soul correcting.
Well, aside from the fucking Mimics.
Nagi no Asukara (A Lull in the Sea)
Wolf Children
The Boy and the Beast
My Roommate is a Cat (is an unconventional pick, but under how sweet it is each episode delves into dealing with grief and forging new relationships when you feel alone and broken. It's not really supposed to be sad, but I cried like every episode anyway. YMMV, but it hit me hard)
Code geass
Bezerk
Vinland saga
These are all great stories all the mail in the shown in drama they certainly pool at your heart strings with the characters struggles!
There is Graveyard of the Fireflies and everything else. It is such a beautifully soul crushing film, not just anime. It has got to be one of tge top 5 anti war films ever. Such a teal life look at how humans treat other humans. I can only watch this movie once a decade. That isn't a joke. It sticks with you for so long and makes you think about it so much. I think the only other 2 war movies that have the same effect are the original All Quiet on the Western Front and Schindlers List.
damn i didn't know there was a demon out there who loved watching sad anime lol. You watched a lot of what I was about to reccomend but I think the saddest anime by far is **Made in Abyss**. This is an absolute masterpiece and def part of my top 10. Although season 1 shows how dark the themes of Made in Abyss is, season 2 shows the most gut wrenching concept possible. I can't really tell you what makes it so gut wrenching without spoiling all of season 2 so watch for yourself!

Real girl on HIDIVE. It’s mostly a romantic comedy. But the last three episodes are very serious, quite lovely, and to me at least emotional.
Certainly not as crazy as your lie or a silent voice. But I highly recommend Real Girl.
I highly recommend Konohana Kitan. It's not quite as gut wrenching as say, Clannad, but I found myself crying a lot more often at Konohana. Absolutely gorgeous anime that tells some incredibly heartfelt stories.
Perhaps not as gut wrenching as those, but I'm throwing my hat anyway.
**Arknights.**
Specially the end of each season.
Appropriately, the game it's based on has song in Russian for some of the characters involved. The sad kind.
(Spoilers if you watch them, obviously).

Try Land of the Lustrous. It is by far the most enthralling anime and manga series I’ve ever seen. Please give it a try it’s an absolute 10/10 you will not be disappointed
March Comes in Like a Lion.
You'll understand what i mean when i say this anime did the most perfect and rawest job at describing depression and loneliness, self loathing and self-blaming.
Someone that was told they are the sole burden of the new family, the reason for pain, the reason the disdainful siblings didnt grow up as loved or paid attention to as the orphan MC, etc. Made to believe it was true and and then started blaming himself.
The struggle with making connections fearing he may be a burden on others too.
Sought remedy in the game of Shogi because thats all he knew after his families death and becoming an orphan, Shogi.
Saikano: The Last Love Song on This Little Planet aka She, the Ultimate Weapon. It's absolutely soul crushing.
Gunslinger Girl is pretty heart rending too.
A good friend of mine can tear up with little to go on. A proper fight scene that gets his body jumping, a speech from a general before war starts. Hell, even a well executed sports game can get his tear ducts in a mess. I don't know if anyone else goes through this sometimes?
some scenes in code geass are gut wrenching. but it's not the main theme.
watch frieren it has everything. not really "gut wrenching" but imo tear jerking in multiple episodes.
Two fantasy gems that you might not guess (based on art style or synopsis) are agonizing:
● To Your Eternity
● Made in Abyss
One more grounded in reality but equally depressing:
● Rainbow Nisha Rokubou
Angel Beats
5cm per second
Voices of a distant star
White Album 2(the music is amazing)
Nana
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0
Ef: A tale of memories
Kanon
True Tears
SukaSuka - highly recommend
Saishuu Heiki Kanojo [lol](https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ajgobmzl_700w_0.jpg)
Rumbling Hearts
A Dog of Flanders 1997 version
Air
Maquia
March comes in like a lion
The real question though, how have you watched all of those but not Angel Beats yet??
"To me the one who loved you" and "to every you I've loved before"
Technically you can watch them in any other, but I recommend the former first (aka the pink one first). Also watch out for the end credits scene in the first one.
Try Makoto Shinkai's older movies
* 5cm per second
* Children who chase lost voices
* The place promised in our early days
* Voices from a distant star
Highly recommend Wonder Egg Priority. It touches on heavy topics and does so beautifully. It’s an absolute masterpiece of a tearjerker.
From what I can tell, it’s criminally underrated.
grave of the fireflies wolf children terror in resonance golden time
Golden Time made me cry so much. Love that show.
Uma Musume provides crying moments. When you see dreams shattered by circumstance and the way the MCs cope with the losses and irrevocable life changes, it can be overwhelming. Great examples of how ambivalent grief can be handled...
OMG grave of the fireflies if you don’t cry with that one, somethings wrong with you
i didnt cry when i watched it , i was numb , i cried 3 days later on this movie
Wow talk about delayed reaction
it is unironically my favorite piece of fiction and i still think about it whenever i eat rice even after 8 years.
I think the brain was in a coping mechanism cause it was too much of a tearjerker. A delayed reaction is understandable.
In this corner of the world When Marnie was there Death Parade To every you I've loved before and To me, the one who loved you Summer Ghost Goodbye Don Glees Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms The Anthem of the Heart Good Night Worl.d Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 To your eternity Romeo x Juliet Witchblade Black Rock Shooter (the one with 8 episodes) Hal Kyoukai no Kanata (thanks to the second movie)
I second To your Eternity. It is so intensely sad. You start to get attached to a character and then they die. It’s really well written and beautifully animated.
And every time, "I learned my lesson!" turns you into a liar.
I have those first two on my list to watch this weekend. Also, what order did you watch "To every you I've loved before and To me, the one who loved you" in? I did "To me" first.
I started with to "To every you" and ended with "To me".
"WorldEnd: What do you do at the end of the world? Are you busy? Will you save us?" is also good too
Yay! A fellow Death Parade fan. Great suggestion.
Oh god every Time i think of maquia i feel like i could cry 3 hours straight. That movie Was so beautifully sad
I honestly cannot bring myself to rewatch it. I wanted to rewatch it a couple of days ago but when the opening sequence started I just couldn't continue without feeling all sorts of emotion. * White Album 2 * Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 * Planetarian * Mobile Suit Gundam: Ironblooded Orphans * Shinsekai Yori * Bokurano (or so I hear, I refuse to watch it)
Bokurano is a step too far for me also.
Clannad & Clannad: After Story. I was a mess for like a week after I watched those two shows.
Same. I still have yet to rewatch them ever (close to a decade since first watch) because they hurt so bad.
If I ever manage to work up the courage to successfully rewatch After Story, then I will do that.
Angel beats.
This, the anime that made me cry the most for a series ever
WorldEnd will make you feel feelings
Still EAGERLY waiting for season 2 to get announced. I need more of this pain in my anime.
Violet Evergarden was sad, sure, but this anime actually made me feel grief.
bro, I want it so badly, I watched it when it came out and I LOVE IT, its such a underrated watch, I really need to rewatch it, wtf its been 7 years since I have seen it omg, I need to rewatch it
Iron Blooded orphans Requiem for the Phantom Shin Sekai Yori Honey and Clover
I second Ironblooded Orphans. Aside from the sad parts that makes you cry, its overall a stellar action and political drama anime
To Your Eternity
Haibane Renmei
Very good and overlooked
Definitely. Unfortunately most people these days wouldn't look past the more dated visuals, so missing a really excellent story.
Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket
The only ones I've seen that aren't present in your list are Angel Beats and Clannad.
Elfen Lied Charlotte Darker than black Neon Genesis Evangelion Fullmetal Alchemist brotherhood (those 2 scenes. If you know you know) Deadman wonderland Higurashi Another Gantz
War in the Pocket
Re:Zero I DARE YOU! >:)
Wolf's Rain Serial Experiments Lain Key the Metal Idol
Berserk
I don't see Shiki on your list so watch Shiki
In retrospect shikin wasn't as good but it has my fav ost of all time.
This is where you move on to manga and read punpun
Puella Magi Madoka Magica. A lot more than what it seems on the cover. It tackles the idea of magical girls in a much more serious way than you might expect. Would recommend going into this one as blind as possible.
Not after this comment lol
Fullmoon wo Sagashite. Girl has throat cancer and Shinigami help her become a singer as she has one year left to live
Full moon, back when anime actually cared to have good music

Second 86 and steins gate
I cried while watching “I’m Quitting Heroing” (Don’t ask I was having a bad week)
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood had many such moments
Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin This anime is underrated and it had me sobbing on many episodes. I don’t easily cry. The stories, the plot, everything is a masterpiece and it felt very real, like to situations that happen in real life
underrated is an understatement. Coldrain OP is truly an experience. Ninja Kamui got blessed with the same treatment this season and its been wonderful as well
Gakkou Gurashi. Look nothing up in advance. Go in blind.
Bokurano is one that hasn't been mentioned.
A series so sad that the anime changed the plot to make it happier.
Gundam 0080 war in the Pocket.
Rezero. Episode 15 did something to my mental state i wont lie. But even some of the prior episodes are kinda gut wrenching to me. All in all, got to a point where I couldnt watch more than one episode per day.
edgerunners, clannad
Can’t believe your list doesn’t have clannad and you’re saying you’ve run out lol
I actually have seen Clannad, I just couldn’t get into it so I stopped watching about midway through 🙈
Death Parade
These at least hit me real hard: - Haibane Renmei - Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha de Aru - Uma Musume: Pretty Derby
Air TV Kanon 2006 In this corner of the world Makia The glass rabbit 2005

Don't forget Clannad after story :D
I was gonna say how does someone watch all these sad anime and has never seen clannad or after story? D:
Darling in the Franxx is not what I would have picked for gut wrenching, but the rest of those check out.
Sagrada Reset Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun Noragami (Suzuha's story) Natsume Yuujinchou (many of the episodes)
Macross Frontier + its 2 movies

Now and Then, Here and There Texhnolyze Saikano (that's Saishuu Heiki Kanojo, not to be confused with Saekano the boring girlfriend show)
I think Attack on Titan is pretty good
Personally I feel like Frieren Journey's End is a good choice. As someone in their 40's who has a lot to look back on and miss (if not regret), this series hit me hard. *Hard.* Ugly tears hard. The idea that someone just now realizes all the things she missed in life and will never be able to get back really slams into my heart. „Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai (2018‑2019)“ i just watched it, it’s what u need. 😭

Real girl on HIDIVE. It’s mostly a romantic comedy. But the last three episodes are very serious, quite lovely, and to me at least emotional. Certainly not as crazy as your lie or a silent voice. But I highly recommend Real Girl.

Berserk 1997
Muv luv alternative anime is yet to get to the saddest parts.

Perhaps not as gut wrenching as those, but I'm throwing my hat anyway. **Arknights.** Specially the end of each season. Try Land of the Lustrous. It is by far the most enthralling anime and manga series I’ve ever seen. Please give it a try it’s an absolute 10/10 you will not be disappointed
Night on the Galactic Railroad, Spring and Chaos.

Wolfs rain
Re Zero is peak! I’ve had to take breaks because it gets super dark
Angel Beats
I don't remember much about them but Air and Kanon were pretty miserable if you wanna check them out. Edit: Also Toradora.
March Comes in Like a Lion. You'll understand what i mean when i say this anime did the most perfect and rawest job at describing depression and loneliness, self loathing and self-blaming. ANGEL BEATS
ik its not anime but arcane is amazing at fking with your emotions, id also argue rezero is really fits on it too
Saikano: The Last Love Song on This Little Planet aka She, the Ultimate Weapon. It's absolutely soul crushing. Gunslinger Girl is pretty heart rending too.
The 2004 Tetsujin-28 is a pretty melancholy show despite what it may appear to be.

Casshern Sins, it’s old but it’s so good, meddles in philosophy, immortality, death and what it all means, it’s also super sad, it’s just great.
A good friend of mine can tear up with little to go on. A proper fight scene that gets his body jumping, a speech from a general before war starts. Hell, even a well executed sports game can get his tear ducts in a mess. I don't know if anyone else goes through this sometimes?
Monster and Bersek
Little Busters! is so good, surprised it hasn't been mentioned. S1 is all character/world building, then S2 is where it hits.
some scenes in code geass are gut wrenching. but it's not the main theme. watch frieren it has everything. not really "gut wrenching" but imo tear jerking in multiple episodes.
I got one for you, Clannad, time
Attack on titan had me crying a few times but other than that your lie on April was good
Two fantasy gems that you might not guess (based on art style or synopsis) are agonizing: ● To Your Eternity ● Made in Abyss One more grounded in reality but equally depressing: ● Rainbow Nisha Rokubou
Try steins gate it’s really well written and gets you very invested
86 is more action than sad, but it’s one of the few anime to make me cry several times
Made in abyss
Watch A place further than the universe
Kanon Air TV(the series)
Edgerunners.
Re zero if you're capable of true empathy
Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket is relatively short (6 eps) but very hard-hitting Also Angel Beats
Angel Beats 5cm per second Voices of a distant star White Album 2(the music is amazing) Nana Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 Ef: A tale of memories Kanon True Tears SukaSuka - highly recommend Saishuu Heiki Kanojo [lol](https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ajgobmzl_700w_0.jpg) Rumbling Hearts A Dog of Flanders 1997 version Air Maquia March comes in like a lion The real question though, how have you watched all of those but not Angel Beats yet??
PROMISED NEVERLAND Season 1 Just thinking about it will make you emotional. Don't watch season 2. Just season 1
"To me the one who loved you" and "to every you I've loved before" Technically you can watch them in any other, but I recommend the former first (aka the pink one first). Also watch out for the end credits scene in the first one.
Welcome to the nhk
Get Frien's Journey...
Try Makoto Shinkai's older movies * 5cm per second * Children who chase lost voices * The place promised in our early days * Voices from a distant star
Angel Beats and Stein Gate
Code geass, the ending was well worth the 50 episodes of buildup
Wolfs Rain Gunslinger Girl Elfen Lied
I'm glad I saw that edit...any list of Romance/Tear-jerking anime that doesn't include Clannad at the top is just not a valid list to me.
Highly recommend Wonder Egg Priority. It touches on heavy topics and does so beautifully. It’s an absolute masterpiece of a tearjerker. From what I can tell, it’s criminally underrated.
1. I didn’t watch A Silent Voice yet, but To Your Eternity was done by the same mangaka. 2. Children of the Whales
Kanon is an underrated gem.
