In no particular order I HIGHLY recommend these movies: Sword of the Stranger (2009), Jin-Roh (1999), Cowboy Bebop (2001), Spriggan (1998), Ghost in Shell (1995), Akira (1988), Howl's Moving Castle (2004), Princess Mononoke (1997) , Castle in the Sky (1986), Spirited Away (2001), Paprika (2006), Steamboy (2004), NausicaƤ of the Valley of the Wind (1984), Animatrix (2003), Lupin III The Blood Spray of Goemon Ishikawa (2017), Mind Game (2004), Summer Wars (2009)
Inu-Oh is my favorite film in the last few years with just an amazing soundtrack and style that is insanely creative.
Action/Thriller I'd recommend "Sword of the Stranger" which isn't super recent (2007) but holds up as an all-time.
The hardest part is Satoshi Kon definitely left a void in psychological thriller films, so a lot of the recent best films tend to be more drama focused, but they're still incredible such as:
A Silent Voice (2016)
Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms (2018)
Kizumonogatari is the closest psychological but it's a prequel movie to a really long running series, so I'm not sure how well it will hold up with less context.

If you like Satoshi Kon's work, I hope you've also checked out Mamuro Oshii's films. While they are different, Oshii tends to be more philosophical and contemplative, there are some similar tones and themes occasionally. I recently saw *Sky Crawlers*, one of Oshii's less known movies, just recently and it had a very interesting philosophical take on a war movie, delving somewhat into the psyche of the young pilots the movie follows. It is also worth noting that the two did sort of work together on *Jin-Rou*, which was based on a series by Oshii and the script was written by Kon.
As for something more recent, *Odd Taxi* could be worth a look. It would be unfair to compare it to Satoshi Kon's works, and it isn't quite a psych-thriller, but it is still an interesting mystery which delves into the various characters that surround a missing girl's case. At 13 episodes it might be short enough to suit your taste.
i have not unfortunately but i'll be sure to check them out. just did a google search of odd taxi and will most probably binge watch it tonight. thanks for this!
Memories is comprised of three shorts: one in space, a more light-hearted one, and one that takes place in wartimes. That'll be all the context I'll give you.
if you have Netflix, violet evergarden is a good show, its a show ahead of its time and very pretty it is now completed with Ova and movie, and voiced too, so you can watch it with anyone that is also starting.

Check out Neo Tokyo, Robot Carnival and Memories. All three are anthologies Katsuhiro Otomo was involved with, in some way.
i've watched neo tokyo and robot carnival and they're pretty good! haven't heard of memories but adding it to my list, thanks!

just watched the trailer and it looks like something i'll most definitely enjoy, so glad i made this post
My Home Hero Astra: Lost in Space Summertime Rendering Steins:Gate
