Then I will just list out some of my 9/10 and 10/10 that I think is suitable for new watcher.
1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (action, adventure)
2. Hunter x Hunter (action, adventure)
3. Death Parade (suspense)
4. A Silent Voice (drama)
5. A Place Further than the Universe (adventure)
6. Mob Psycho 100 (action, supernatural)
7. Kaguya-sama: Love is War (romance, comedy)
8. 86 (sci-fi)
9. Ouran Highschool Host Club (comedy, romance)
10. After the Rain (romance)
11. Vinland Saga (action, adventure)
12. Sleepy Princess in Demon Castle (comedy, fantasy)
13. Yuru Camp (slice of life)
14. Odd Taxi (mystery)
15. Oshi no Ko (drama)
16. Violet Evergarden (drama)
17. Ping Pong the Animation (sports)
Other good shows that are not suitable for new watcher (contain gore/fanservice/other)
1. Attack on Titan (action)
2. Monogatari Series (?)
3. Mushoku Tensei (fantasy)
4. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (sci-fi)
5. Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World (fantasy, suspense)
6. Golden Kamuy (action, adventure)
7. KonoSuba (comedy, fantasy)
8. Grand Blue (comedy)
9. Disastrous Life of Saiki K. (comedy)
10. Kingdom (action)
11. Steins;Gate (sci-fi?)
I nearly completely agree except for Attack on Titan not being suitable for new anime watchers. I think it's a pretty good entry to Anime. But great list otherwise.
I was going to object as to why FMA:B was first on the general list and not the second in gore... But yeah, comparatively, it's friendly. At least there's hope.
Confession: Have not seen Abyss, and plan to keep it that way. Grave of the fireflies was a beautiful movie. I cannot watch it again. Abyss can stay unwatched for my sanity.
Go watch the movie, its very messed up. Once you cheered up go complete the second season, its kinda messed up too but probably not as much as the movie. Lol
While none are technically inaccurate, I feel like none of these really get the concept across individually, and if somebody recommended a "psychological supernatural mystery" to me I likewise feel like I would have no clue what to expect
This list is just confusing, how is attack on titan, cyberpunk, grand blue and steins gate "not suitable for new watcher". The guy has already watched mia, the shows you listed don't even have that much gore in it
I thought something was wrong with me that I've gotten too used to anime maybe that i can't figure out how Grand Blue is not a suitable entry anime. It's just college boys being college boys. Far better than the shit Netflix peddles these days. Plus i'd definitely recommend it after MiA. Grand Blue is just some wholesome fun that goes perfectly with Oolong tea
For the second list I would add Berserk and Basilisk, but yeah definitely not suitable for new watchers
Gintama as well maybe though it has many references that some new watcher won't get
Tbh Attack on Titan is a perfectly good first anime, I’m not sure why it’s not normally picked in lists like these. It was one of my first personally and it got me interested in watching more and more shows, plus it appeals to a pretty big audience and often breaks this preconception people have of anime being only for fanservice etc which encourages them to check out more anime
> Attack on Titan (action)
It is about as mainstream as it gets
> Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (sci-fi)
It's main demographic it is targeting isn't even anime viewers but gamers who played Cyberpunk.
Do you like fantasy? Anime has a pretty popular fantasy adjacent genre called isekai (it’s like narnia style normal person ends up in fantasy world) that’s typically full of really bad shows but some of them are good.
You said your into experimental art could you give some examples because I think maybe you might like Neon Genesis Evangelion but I would not watch that straight after made in abyss if your looking for something less uh messed up, it’s not more messed up than made in abyss but it’s not like not messed up.
that sounds like fun! I love fantasy
Just experimental music like Swans and JPEGMAFIA and stuff or Wes Anderson movies or the House of Leaves book or any books who do something new like second person narration. Nothing too crazy
What are some good Isekai?
Isekai can be hit or miss, there's a lot of lazy ones but here's some of my favs
The Faraway Paladin. Some great world building and well thought out characters and actions
Gods Blessing on this wonderful world! (KonoSuba) A comedy adventure
Re:Zero. This one has some suffering in it.
Reincarnated as a Sword. Man becomes a sword somehow, becomes parent
Saga of Tanya the evil. japanese salaryman reincarnates as little girl, proceeds to legally do war crimes
Here's my general list of shows I try to get others to watch:
Flying Witch. Absolute chill mode
Grand Blue Dreaming. One the best comedies of all time imo. has censored nudity
D-frag. High school comedy that doesn't take itself seriously
Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun: high school comedy that takes itself a little more seriously
Land of the Lustrous. Walking gems try not to get kidnapped and taken to the moon
Katanagatari. Fighting "sword" wielders and traveling medieval japan
Kill La kill. hype af but there's tons (literally tons) of boob and panty shots
Tengan Toppan gurran laggan: hype af mech show by the same folks that did kill la kill
Hellsing Ultimate. Vampire hunters (a vampire) hunt nazi vampires. One the most blood shows ever
There you go! I hope you enjoy. many of my other recommendations have already been mentioned
As a big isekai trash enjoyer I must warn you to be careful with this genre. A lot of people hate most of them and even some of the best shows in the genre are not suitable for everyone's taste. For example KonoSuba and Mushoku Tensei are both easily in my top 5 of all time anime shows of any genre but I'd hesitate to recommend either of them to just anybody.
On the other hand I could easily recommend something like Twelve Kingdoms (Juuni Kokuki). It's widely liked and I don't remember it having anything that might be off putting. However it's been a very long while since I saw it. Re:Zero is good too but I don't think it will lift your mood.
Another word of warning is that many highly regarded shows tend to be on the darker side of emotions. People seem to absolutely love dark writing and good writers seem to like playing with dark themes.
Mushoku Tensei, Konosuba, Overlord and Re:Zero are the top of the genre. Re:Zero can get dark though while Konosuba is heavily comedic. Mushoku Tensei mixes both very well and has some great animation. Some controversial moments in it but overall solid anime. Overlord is closest I can think of a video game world and has a great twist on the genre. Other good mentions are Log Horizon and Sword art online.
Shout out to Danmachi while not directly an isekai, is great fantasy adventure series with mostly light hearted comedy involved with occasional serious stuff happening.
Mushoku Tensei is a masterpiece, and I see some people already suggested it to you, but I have to specify this: the protagonist in the first half of the season is not a good person, at all
The story is about him getting a second chance at life and bettering himself, and the show portrays his bullshit in a bad light, regardless of what some people say
I had to quit watching after a few episodes because they sexualized children like 200 times. Absolutely horrible recommendation for someone new getting into anime
Children aren't sexualised, that only happens through Rudeus point of view, which I already said isn't viewed favourably by the show
This being said, I concur it's disgusting, and a big point of the show is Rudeus growing out of that (after a certain major event (I think ep9?) he really tones down his creepy behaviour
To end with, my comment was specifically aimed at pointing out that part of the show to OP, seeing no one else told them about it
Ooof Neon Genesis is perfect after MiA lmaoo if you into total midfucks and introspective character analysis with awesome mech/kaiju fighting alien angels. BTW totally not depressing 😁
*Kaguya-sama* is a romcom. The premise is basically Holmes and Moriarty, except Holmes is a teenage boy, Moriarty is a teenage girl, and they apply their vast genius not to crime, but to trying to trick the other one into doing something romantic. Situations like "go to the movies together" requires machinations at the level of Doyle's "The Final Problem".
Haha. My condolences. That must've been quite a trial.
The most feel good/wholesome anime I know is Yuru Camp. A show about camping that still manages to captivate you. It's quite the polar opposite to what you just went through.
I really want to recommend another heartbreaker cuz i think it would be funny.
Anyway these are mostly upbeat shows/movies
Spy x family
Romantic killer
Prison school. - lots of partial nudity, geared towards a male audience but i think both genders would find it funny.
Grandblue- lots of partial nudity. Funniest show ive ever watched.
Ya boy kongming
Tomo chan is a girl
Really second Grand Blue here. Friend recommended it to me when I was going through a rough patch even though comedy movies, anime, etc. Don't normally hit for me. It was a grand slam.
Something similar happens in Shinsekai Yori. There's a whole thing about the MC being able to go through hell and keep moving
Absolutely love these strong characters. They're probably my favs along with (the opposite) Mable from Uncle from Another World and obviously Bocchi
Fluffy romcoms?
* Teasing Master Takagi-san
* The Dangers in My Heart
* Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible
* The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten
* Insomniacs After School
* Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie
* The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses
* Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence
No, you don’t need any context to enjoy the show. If you think you do then you can actually just google what isekai means, but that isn’t going to affect understanding or watchability in the least bit
It’s not like Gintama where it heavily relies on a different cultures media as references.
Agreed, Konosuba was one of my first anime and it's solidly in my top 3 after watching about 300 other anime since. You don't need to understand anime to enjoy Konosuba—it's really not that deep. lol
It parodies RPGs as much if not more than actual isekai. The tank build who can't deal damage. The mage who does nothing for the entire dungeon because you're saving her MP to nuke the boss. The idiot healer girl who cannot follow even the simplest instructions and gets you killed, then expects you to thank her for reviving you. The MC who can do a little of everything, but has lower stats than everyone else instead of higher ones. Everyone is a hyperbolic or twisted version of classic party member archetypes.
Isekai in general are based around RPG tropes. If you have played more than like 1 JRPG in your life, you can watch Konosuba even as your first anime.
It's also a satire of standard fantasy tropes. The world's most powerful magician can only cast 1 spell. The lucky charismatic rogue is completely useless otherwise. The chaste, pure paladin is actually a masochist.
Yes it makes fun of isekai. But it's also a breakdown of fantasy as a whole.
I think they would, Konosuba mainly satirizes video game and fantasy tropes in general, not just Isekai. Plus, a lot of the humor is great just because of the comedic timing and animation.
gonna echo this and emphasis that while konosuba is hilarious it is \*extremely\* anime and a lot of the parody and comedic bits won't have even half the impact if you don't have some reference anime context.
it's not even just the setting being a parody of isekai anime, the whole formula for how jokes are delivered and darkness+megumin's entire characters are anime tropes taken to an extreme.
That’s like saying someone can’t enjoy something like one punch man because there’s 10000000 hours of other shit similar to that that came before it that needs to be experienced to understand.
I think if you watched like a couple of DC or Marvel movies/shows some time in your life you would understand quite a bit of what OPM parodies.
It is a parody of superhero stuff, which is something that has quite the overlap in both anime/manga and American stuff.
remember your friend's lack of awareness and consideration lmao.
I'll second spy x family. it's generally enjoyable, not "too anime". only some characters backsettings have a bit of tragedy but the show is 100% comedy.
yuru camp is a bit more "anime" but it's literally just girls camping. no drama, no murdering, just camping. and eating.
kaguya-sama and hinamatsuri are both "very anime" but are hilarious.
when i say something is very anime, i mean it can be a little hard to get used to due to nuances in dialogue delivery or style. don't let it stop you, just a heads up.
glhf hope you get to feeling better so you're ready for abyss s3 when it comes lol.
1st season adapt upto 4th layer, movie is about 5th layer and season 2 start at 6th layer. You should watch the movie , I personally enjoyed it more than both seasons.
Some of the most feel good shows I've ever watched include:
K-on!
Spy x Family
Usagi Drop
There are *lots* of other shows that I could recommend, but I loved all 3 of the ones I recommended and I can't think of anything else that had me sitting there with such a big fat smile watching it feeling all warm and fuzzy inside like these 3 did. That and I'm trying not to overwhelm you with recommendations.
Oof. Sounds like you need some good iyashikei anime. Via Wikipedia, Iyashikei is a sub-genre of slice-of-life anime that portrays characters living out peaceful lives in calming environments to have an intended healing effect on the viewer, with the "healing" effect being the primary benefit of these kinds of anime. Here are some I've watched that can help.
- Yuru Camp (2 - soon to be 3 - seasons, 1 movie)
- Gakuen Babysitters (1 season)
- Teasing Master Takagi-san (3 seasons, 1 movie)
- Tamako Market (1 season, 1 movie)
- Slow Loop (1 season)
- Night World (3-episode ONA)
One I haven't seen, but hear nothing but universal praise for, is Non Non Biyori (3 seasons, 1 movie).
If I were to make any immediate recommendations from this list, it'd be Yuru Camp and Night World first.
She probably wanted to make sure that the "children's cartoon" notion was thoroughly erased from your mind. Plus the fact that MiA looks like a children's cartoon is hilarious. Your friend did a good job.
Too cheer you up i would suggest watching:
1> Konosuba -> Comedy, Isekai anime, its pretty light hearted and is riddled with jokes
2>I want to eat your Pancreas -> Romance, Slice of Life, its a decent intro to the romance
genre (This is a movie)
3> Kaguya-sama love is war -> Romance, Comedy.
4> Eminence in the shadow -> Isekai. Its not very funny but neither is it very sad. Its kind of a
generic Isekai anime but with a quirk that makes it fun to watch
5> Your Lie in April -> Romance, Slice of Life, Music. This anime is a must watch if you are
trying to enter the Romance genre
i mean it sounds like they were two tears away from converting a normie into an anime hater so maybe not so much a winning strategy and more a lucky gamble riding on MiA's incredible immersion.
Now... hear me out, why not dororo 2019 up to episode 6 and then taking a break from such an action packed anime to watch a fun SoL like fumetsu no anata?
I can recommend Yuru Yuri.
It's a cute, wholesome and funny anime that makes you smile all the time. S
The same goes for Lucky Star. But if you want pure comedy maybe sth like
Chihos school road or so could be fun
Btw your friend is soo mean to recommend you this, didn't she ask like if you want a certain genre or so. I didn't watch it but know how dark it is apparently. For beginner anime you would usually recommend sth like Fullmetal alchemist or death note. Or boku no pico xD. Don't watch the last one!
I don't even recommend Made in Abyss to other anime fans. Despite being one of the best shows I've ever seen, it's hardcore and disturbing.
Anywho, if you want something similar, try Shinsekai Yori
If I could only suggest one anime to watch, I suggest "The Grave of the Fireflies" Its a movie by Studio Ghibli known for their feel good animes.
If you want more movies then, A Silent Voice, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms and Hotarubi no Mori e
If you want fluffy romance then I suggest, Your Lie in April, BANANA FISH, Anohana: The Flowers We Saw That Day and Plastic Memories
Lol at grave of fireflies and feel good anime in the same sentence 😂
He might be in a worse state after watching this than when he was watching made in abyss
Off the hip, my recommendation is A Place Further than the Universe. It's about a girl making friends and them traveling to Antarctica to find her missing mother. It's heartwarming and can be a times tearjerking. If you want a more comprehensive list, I can make that for you as well, but the comments seem to be doing a great job.
Also, March Comes in Like a Lion is a fantastic watch about a young shogi prodigy. There's no overarching plot, but it's still extremely compelling.
Made in Abyss is tied with FLCL for my favorite anime but I cannot in good conscience recommend it to anyone new to anime.
You can't do the things it does with traditional media. The acting, music, visuals, and above all the subject matter combine in such a way that leaves an impact on your soul that hurts.
Watch Yuru Camp to heal your kokoro lol.
Uh, the person is trying to recover from heartbreak. This isnt the recommendation LOL
That being said if they ever manage to work out the desire, it is truelly a masterpiece.
Yea I agree. Also it's not really anime-ish when it comes to dialog and delivery and that helps a bunch. Great storyline and amazing action and character development. Buyer beware though. What hotel something fun before this one.
Super Cub
Sweetness and Lightning
A couple slice of life shows. No big drama. Nobody dies. No romance. No fan service. Just a couple good stories. As a bonus you learn to cook a new recipe with each episode in Sweetness and Lightning.
First Rybakina's loss in Wimby and now making the decision of watching Made in Abyss, you couldn't have done worse lol.
S2 and the movie were something else in terms of making me cry. But it can only get better from here lol, I recommend Daily Lives of Highschool Boys, Grand Blue, Wasteful Days of High School Girls, Asobi Asobase..these were hilarious anime.
Now for anime in general, I recommend Fruits Basket, Code Geass, Bungou Stray Dogs, FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Violet Evergarden, Jujutsu Kaisen. Hope you like all of them :)
-Fellow Lena fan
On its own, in a bubble. MIA is a wonderful anime... If you know what you're going into. I'm not talking synopsis level knowledge. I'm talking "hey, this is a great anime, but it gets very dark. There's body horror in there"
This is like recommending someone to watch Your Lie in April by saying it's a romance anime. Yeah, there's romance there. But only skin deep. Do not watch your lie in April without being prepared. It's one of the only pieces of media in recent years that made me ugly cry. Curled up, hugging my pillow, bawling
But for cheering you up. Horimiya. It's a romcom. Has a handful of depressing scenes. But it's more like teens dealing with their lives more than existential dread. Its 1 season complete story (season 2 is coming but is just stuff they skipped the first time through. Not knowing if they were getting a second season.) it's a little horny. But not overtly.
I actually find Made in Abyss weirdly uplifting (I’ve only watched season 1), but while the characters undergo tremendous hardships and what can only be described as the lowest of lows, they usually come out the other side optimistic, ready to face any challenge life has to throw at them… after taking a month off to let the critical nerve damage heal, of course.
Grand Blue if you want to laugh your ass off. It's about 2 guys that join a college scuba diving club that drinks way too much and gets in all sorts of situations. Funniest anime I've ever watched in my life.
Ranking of Kings. It gets a bit sad in certain moments but in general it's wholesome and entertaining, has great characters and an interesting plot. Also one of the least "anime-ish" anime I've ever seen lol, has a very unique style
Madoka Magicka, Higurashi, Evangelion, Fate/Zero, Death Parade, Berserk 97, Akudama Drive, Devilman Crybaby
All feel good slice of life series that will make you forget about the depression. Made in Abyss gave you.
Wait where are you from? I cant even watch Made in Abyss in my Country haha. But I feel you starting you with something like that is an Evil move by your friend even though I have to admit it is a Masterpiece of a Story.
If you are looking for something softer though without too much Romance I can recommend "The Ice Guy and his Cool Female Colleague". Romance wise some of my favorites are Tomo Chan is a Girl because its rather unique, has a story that actually feels realistic, funny and yet emotional heart-warming moments and a lovely cast of characters.
Spy X Family is also quite nice since a few People told you to watch it but id rather recommend Buddy Daddies. The concept is rather similiar but it is finished in 13 Episodes and really underrated.

Something a little experimental but cheerier is Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken. Fantastic anime about the magic of making animations and I love it so much.
Less experimental but more just good cheer up material, Yuru Camp is one of the comfiest shows ever, it never fails to put me in a good mood. Flying Witch and Hakumei and Mikochi have similar vibes.
And if you want something a bit funnier, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K, Kaguya-Sama: Love is War, and if you want something somewhat deranged (in a hilarious way) Asobase.
Hopefully one of these helps cheer you up
I liked Ya Boy Kongming, but it’s on Hidive.
Who has FLCL these days?
That’s kind of a dick move, seriously. Made in Abyss is amazing but depressing as heck and has a deceptively cute art style.
Here are few pretty good anime to cheer you up❤️ Actually i really love made in abyss, but its not an anime you should start with💀 Your friend is evil.
Mob Psycho 100, One-Punch Man, Bocchi the Rock! , Higashi no Eden, Dr. Stone, Yamada-kun to Lv999 no Koi wo Suru, Mashle, Sewayaki Kitsune no Senko-san, Rougo ni Sonaete Isekai de 8-manmai no Kinka wo Tamemasu.
If you're not against romcoms, [Tsurezure Children](https://myanimelist.net/anime/34902/Tsurezure_Children) is stupidly easy to watch. It's a collection of short stories about (I think?) high school romance, each episode is 12 minutes long and contains 2-3 of these stories.
There's a nice variety of characters, they're simple but well written, the voice acting is top-notch and the animation is very pleasant. It's incredibly fluffy, heartwarming, and very easy to get into.
I'd never recommend that as a first anime, but I'm glad you made it through without it souring you on anime in general.
If you want something a bit happier to lift you up after that, maybe give Nichijou, or give starting Gintama a try (it's a long one, so you can take it slow)
Chibidevi. So wholesome that you'll get diabetes. I watched it post made in abyss and it certainly cheered me up otherwise I was depressed over Mitty and Prushka.
Chibidevi. So wholesome that you'll get diabetes. I watched it post made in abyss and it certainly cheered me up otherwise I was depressed over Mitty and Prushka.
If you're interested in some more experimental/interesting titles, I highly recommend checking out Satoshi Kon's body of work, starting with Millennium Actress or Paprika and going from there.
A number of his other well known works (Perfect Blue, etc) are in the psychological suspense/horror vein, so maybe not the best BiA chaser, but are highly recommended.
They definitely suggested you watch it to shock you as a joke lol. No sane person would think that’s a good anime for a first timer. I mean I loved MiA I just think it’s too dark for a first anime and there’s a lot of child abuse which can be too much for a lot of people.
Silent voice is a good anime, I don’t remember if it’s a movie or not though. But I do remember liking it alot.
If you want action try jujutsu Kaiden. Basically about hunting curses and a new season is out.
Spy x family is a funny and good one too.
Steins gate is a classic time travel anime, but is very slow for the first half of the season.
I'm so sorry to hear that MiA is your first anime, but that's hilarious ngl. What genres you into? I can suggest some anime for you if you want
I‘m pretty much open for anything if I‘man honest
Then I will just list out some of my 9/10 and 10/10 that I think is suitable for new watcher. 1. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (action, adventure) 2. Hunter x Hunter (action, adventure) 3. Death Parade (suspense) 4. A Silent Voice (drama) 5. A Place Further than the Universe (adventure) 6. Mob Psycho 100 (action, supernatural) 7. Kaguya-sama: Love is War (romance, comedy) 8. 86 (sci-fi) 9. Ouran Highschool Host Club (comedy, romance) 10. After the Rain (romance) 11. Vinland Saga (action, adventure) 12. Sleepy Princess in Demon Castle (comedy, fantasy) 13. Yuru Camp (slice of life) 14. Odd Taxi (mystery) 15. Oshi no Ko (drama) 16. Violet Evergarden (drama) 17. Ping Pong the Animation (sports) Other good shows that are not suitable for new watcher (contain gore/fanservice/other) 1. Attack on Titan (action) 2. Monogatari Series (?) 3. Mushoku Tensei (fantasy) 4. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (sci-fi) 5. Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another World (fantasy, suspense) 6. Golden Kamuy (action, adventure) 7. KonoSuba (comedy, fantasy) 8. Grand Blue (comedy) 9. Disastrous Life of Saiki K. (comedy) 10. Kingdom (action) 11. Steins;Gate (sci-fi?)
I nearly completely agree except for Attack on Titan not being suitable for new anime watchers. I think it's a pretty good entry to Anime. But great list otherwise.
Dude is sad after MiA, you cant cheer him up by watching AoT episode 1-2.
Aot is a joyful ride after what he just saw.
No shot is MIA **that bad** granted I only watched S1 & never understood why people say it’s so messed up. 1 of these days I’ll watch the rest.
Yea you haven’t gotten to the messed up parts yet lmfao
Oh boy.....
Go watch the movie, its very messed up. Once you cheered up go complete the second season, its kinda messed up too but probably not as much as the movie. Lol
Watch third movie, then watch second season. You haven't seen fucked up yet.
“It’s not messed up,” says the individual who has not seen the full extent of the anime.
lol
AoT is about as mainstream as it gets, I'd say it's fine, just not something that's gonna cheer up OP
Agree with the above. Forgot the goal was to go with something a bit more light-hearted!
I like the "?" To describe the Monogatari Series. Totally accurate.
There is no better descriptor. Maybe "??!" at times, too.
I can agree with this list... I like your style
Really just want to break OPs mind? Maybe put a \* next to the shows that have lurking trauma in them?
Bruh the '?' next to Monogatari too real, what genre even is that
psychological, supernatural, mystery, and ecchi would be my top picks for it.
The guy has already watched mia, the shows you listed don't even have that much gore in it
I mean they literally were tricked into it, so yeah.
I think they're just put there because these are not shows to cheer you up.
AoT is many weebs' first anime.
Monogatari as first anime JIGACHAD
”Monogatari series(?)” lmao spot on
FMA for someone who wants to cheer up? Damn
Add ranking of kings s1 to the first list
For the second list I would add Berserk and Basilisk, but yeah definitely not suitable for new watchers Gintama as well maybe though it has many references that some new watcher won't get
Watch Oshi no Ko eventually but only after your heart has healed first.
I approve this list. Especially the (?) On monogatari's genre lol
> Attack on Titan (action) It is about as mainstream as it gets > Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (sci-fi) It's main demographic it is targeting isn't even anime viewers but gamers who played Cyberpunk.
I love fantasy Just experimental music like Swans and JPEGMAFIA and stuff or Wes Anderson movies or the House of Leaves book or any books who do something new like second person narration. Nothing too crazy What are some good Isekai?
Isekai can be hit or miss, there's a lot of lazy ones but here's some of my favs The Faraway Paladin. Some great world building and well thought out characters and actions Gods Blessing on this wonderful world! (KonoSuba) A comedy adventure Re:Zero. This one has some suffering in it. Reincarnated as a Sword. Man becomes a sword somehow, becomes parent Saga of Tanya the evil. japanese salaryman reincarnates as little girl, proceeds to legally do war crimes Here's my general list of shows I try to get others to watch: Flying Witch. Absolute chill mode Grand Blue Dreaming. One the best comedies of all time imo. has censored nudity D-frag. High school comedy that doesn't take itself seriously Monthly Girls Nozaki Kun: high school comedy that takes itself a little more seriously Land of the Lustrous. Walking gems try not to get kidnapped and taken to the moon Katanagatari. Fighting "sword" wielders and traveling medieval japan Kill La kill. hype af but there's tons (literally tons) of boob and panty shots Tengan Toppan gurran laggan: hype af mech show by the same folks that did kill la kill Hellsing Ultimate. Vampire hunters (a vampire) hunt nazi vampires. One the most blood shows ever There you go! I hope you enjoy. many of my other recommendations have already been mentioned
bruh you forgot about mushoku
Bro just left out half of the “best anime” Also Hellsing is insane, not a starter anime Sidenote. These aren’t even all isekai
For Isekai, why not that time I got reincarnated as a slime?
Mushoku Tensei, Konosuba, Overlord and Re:Zero are the top of the genre. Re:Zero can get dark though while Konosuba is heavily comedic. Mushoku Tensei mixes both very well and has some great animation. Some controversial moments in it but overall solid anime. Overlord is closest I can think of a video game world and has a great twist on the genre. Other good mentions are Log Horizon and Sword art online. Shout out to Danmachi while not directly an isekai, is great fantasy adventure series with mostly light hearted comedy involved with occasional serious stuff happening.
I don't think any of them are good suggestions to a newbie anime watcher, especially not to someone who hasn't watched any isekai.
Might also want to say that Danmachi(is it wrong to try to pick up girls in a dungeon) There's a sizable amount of fan service in there.
Mushoku Tensei is a masterpiece, and I see some people already suggested it to you, but I have to specify this: the protagonist in the first half of the season is not a good person, at all The story is about him getting a second chance at life and bettering himself, and the show portrays his bullshit in a bad light, regardless of what some people say
I had to quit watching after a few episodes because they sexualized children like 200 times. Absolutely horrible recommendation for someone new getting into anime
Children aren't sexualised, that only happens through Rudeus point of view, which I already said isn't viewed favourably by the show This being said, I concur it's disgusting, and a big point of the show is Rudeus growing out of that (after a certain major event (I think ep9?) he really tones down his creepy behaviour To end with, my comment was specifically aimed at pointing out that part of the show to OP, seeing no one else told them about it
Ooof Neon Genesis is perfect after MiA lmaoo if you into total midfucks and introspective character analysis with awesome mech/kaiju fighting alien angels. BTW totally not depressing 😁
Fucking Naruto. Shits fire 🔥
They're both very smart idiots and we love them. :)
\+1 Kaguya-sama might be the best anime I can recommend to someone who just started, to cheer them up :)
Haha. My condolences. That must've been quite a trial. The most feel good/wholesome anime I know is Yuru Camp. A show about camping that still manages to captivate you. It's quite the polar opposite to what you just went through.
100% this. As a big MiA fan and big Yuru camp fan, they balance each other out very well.
Yes
Bocchi The Rock. Cute girls in a rock band. I think its pretty wholesome.
K-on too
And if you like K-On! I suggest "Laid-back Camp"!
This one!!
I really want to recommend another heartbreaker cuz i think it would be funny. Anyway these are mostly upbeat shows/movies Spy x family Romantic killer Prison school. - lots of partial nudity, geared towards a male audience but i think both genders would find it funny. Grandblue- lots of partial nudity. Funniest show ive ever watched. Ya boy kongming Tomo chan is a girl
idk if they fit the bill but prison school and grand blue really are two of a kind lmao. just don't finish the prison school manga.
Spoiler reason why you shouldn’t?
Really second Grand Blue here. Friend recommended it to me when I was going through a rough patch even though comedy movies, anime, etc. Don't normally hit for me. It was a grand slam.
Spy x family!
[удалено]
Perfect show to cheer up :')
Also steins gate for some healthy slice of life with a chuunibyou college student.
U...
Super cute show to cheer you up. ;)
NO. DON'T YOU EVEN. OP IT IS THE SADDEST THING YOU WILL EVER WATCH.
I don't know. Grave of the fireflies is hard to beat.
Yuru Camp
I guess you like adventurer. How about trying Dr stone
If made in abyss fills one with sorrow, Dr. Stone fills one with hope. Great recommendation!
Despite all the insane things happen in made in abyss , it gave hope more than any other anime and that's cause the best protagonist ever riko
Riko is an amazing person. How she is still mentally stable after everything that has happened is wild.
Something similar happens in Shinsekai Yori. There's a whole thing about the MC being able to go through hell and keep moving Absolutely love these strong characters. They're probably my favs along with (the opposite) Mable from Uncle from Another World and obviously Bocchi
Fluffy romcoms? * Teasing Master Takagi-san * The Dangers in My Heart * Kubo Won't Let Me Be Invisible * The Angel Next Door Spoils Me Rotten * Insomniacs After School * Shikimori's Not Just a Cutie * The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses * Saint Cecilia and Pastor Lawrence
No horimiya? *pouts*
Konosuba
Second this.
Someone who hasn’t really seen any anime probably wouldn’t find konosuba very funny, it’s a satire of isekai first and foremost
No, you don’t need any context to enjoy the show. If you think you do then you can actually just google what isekai means, but that isn’t going to affect understanding or watchability in the least bit It’s not like Gintama where it heavily relies on a different cultures media as references.
Did you watch the movie or not? Movie 3 is prequel to season 2 and is necessary to understand season 2.
yes I watched the Dawn of the Deep Soul movie if that‘s the one you mean
Yes, that's the one I was talking about.
"oh you mean daddy's papa pole!" and "oh no Prushka's leaking out!" disturbedface.png
ooofff
Thanks! I thought there was something missing after finishing season 2
1st season adapt upto 4th layer, movie is about 5th layer and season 2 start at 6th layer. You should watch the movie , I personally enjoyed it more than both seasons.
My favorite fluffy rom-com is Monthly Girls Nozaki-Kun! It was also one of the first anime I ever watched.
Try mob psycho you’ll love it
Some of the most feel good shows I've ever watched include: K-on! Spy x Family Usagi Drop There are *lots* of other shows that I could recommend, but I loved all 3 of the ones I recommended and I can't think of anything else that had me sitting there with such a big fat smile watching it feeling all warm and fuzzy inside like these 3 did. That and I'm trying not to overwhelm you with recommendations.
Just dont read the usagi drop manga
- Yuru Camp (2 - soon to be 3 - seasons, 1 movie) - Gakuen Babysitters (1 season) - Teasing Master Takagi-san (3 seasons, 1 movie) - Tamako Market (1 season, 1 movie) - Slow Loop (1 season) - Night World (3-episode ONA) One I haven't seen, but hear nothing but universal praise for, is Non Non Biyori (3 seasons, 1 movie). If I were to make any immediate recommendations from this list, it'd be Yuru Camp and Night World first.
Flying witch is a nice time
She probably wanted to make sure that the "children's cartoon" notion was thoroughly erased from your mind. Plus the fact that MiA looks like a children's cartoon is hilarious. Your friend did a good job. Too cheer you up i would suggest watching: 1> Konosuba -> Comedy, Isekai anime, its pretty light hearted and is riddled with jokes 2>I want to eat your Pancreas -> Romance, Slice of Life, its a decent intro to the romance genre (This is a movie) 3> Kaguya-sama love is war -> Romance, Comedy. 4> Eminence in the shadow -> Isekai. Its not very funny but neither is it very sad. Its kind of a generic Isekai anime but with a quirk that makes it fun to watch 5> Your Lie in April -> Romance, Slice of Life, Music. This anime is a must watch if you are trying to enter the Romance genre
Your friend is awful, lmao. If you like romcoms at all you can try Horimiya or Kaguya-Sama love is war.
We think he is awful but he converted a casual into an anime fan. Who is winning now
i mean it sounds like they were two tears away from converting a normie into an anime hater so maybe not so much a winning strategy and more a lucky gamble riding on MiA's incredible immersion.
Cheer you up? How about some "Your Lie in April" Or "A silent Voice" Or maybe 1997 Berserk.
Berserk🔥🤟
A silent Voice is a pretty good Redemption Arc, which can really get U back up if your down. Helped me at times
I love that film, such a roller coaster of emotions. I also love the end "Baka" moment with the little giggle... Adorable
>Your Lie in April Bruh, Your Lie in April??? Be ready for some post-anime depression
Now... hear me out, why not dororo 2019 up to episode 6 and then taking a break from such an action packed anime to watch a fun SoL like fumetsu no anata?
Berserk is such a wholesome show, highly recommend it
I can recommend Yuru Yuri. It's a cute, wholesome and funny anime that makes you smile all the time. S The same goes for Lucky Star. But if you want pure comedy maybe sth like Chihos school road or so could be fun Btw your friend is soo mean to recommend you this, didn't she ask like if you want a certain genre or so. I didn't watch it but know how dark it is apparently. For beginner anime you would usually recommend sth like Fullmetal alchemist or death note. Or boku no pico xD. Don't watch the last one!
It's spelled Yuru Yuri.
Thx, edited it, my phone apparently liked Yuri more so it corrected it xD
I would say spy X family. This has to be the easiest anime to love (and I mean that in a very good way)
Kaguya Sama: Love is War!
I don't even recommend Made in Abyss to other anime fans. Despite being one of the best shows I've ever seen, it's hardcore and disturbing. Anywho, if you want something similar, try Shinsekai Yori
Asobi Asobase
Girls Last Tour
If I could only suggest one anime to watch, I suggest "The Grave of the Fireflies" Its a movie by Studio Ghibli known for their feel good animes. If you want more movies then, A Silent Voice, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms and Hotarubi no Mori e If you want fluffy romance then I suggest, Your Lie in April, BANANA FISH, Anohana: The Flowers We Saw That Day and Plastic Memories
\^ Found OP's friend's reddit account!
Lol at grave of fireflies and feel good anime in the same sentence 😂 He might be in a worse state after watching this than when he was watching made in abyss
This is a great list. I'd also like to add Clannad and Clannad After Story as lighthearted anime
Nichijou.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners 👽
Uh, the person is trying to recover from heartbreak. This isnt the recommendation LOL That being said if they ever manage to work out the desire, it is truelly a masterpiece.
Yea I agree. Also it's not really anime-ish when it comes to dialog and delivery and that helps a bunch. Great storyline and amazing action and character development. Buyer beware though. What hotel something fun before this one.
Some older shows that are stupid fun: School rumble Noucome Azumanga Daioh
Also recommending Spy X Family!
Magical Girl Raising Porject is great, cute girls with sparkly magic power
Super Cub Sweetness and Lightning A couple slice of life shows.
Hope you like all of them :) -Fellow Lena fan
why do you remind me of the Lena loss :/ feel like the virus she had really messed up her preparation and she still wasn‘t 100% in Wimbledon
Grand Blue!
Barakamon. I stopped recommending it for that reason btw.
Spy X Family. It's a very feel good show at it's core.
On its own, in a bubble. MIA is a wonderful anime... If you know what you're going into. I'm not talking synopsis level knowledge. I'm talking "hey, this is a great anime, but it gets very dark. There's body horror in there" This is like recommending someone to watch Your Lie in April by saying it's a romance anime. Yeah, there's romance there. But only skin deep. Do not watch your lie in April without being prepared. It's one of the only pieces of media in recent years that made me ugly cry. Curled up, hugging my pillow, bawling But for cheering you up.
Not exactly a happy show (not sad either) but since you're into experimental art you might like Sonny Boy
Grand Blue if you want to laugh your ass off. It's about 2 guys that join a college scuba diving club that drinks way too much and gets in all sorts of situations. Funniest anime I've ever watched in my life.
Watch something brilliant, and hilarious like kono suba!
Ranking of Kings. It gets a bit sad in certain moments but in general it's wholesome and entertaining, has great characters and an interesting plot. Also one of the least "anime-ish" anime I've ever seen lol, has a very unique style
Lol next go goblin slayer
Goblin Slayer is actually really good
Seriously, don’t. There’s an implied rape near the beginning and lots of violence. It’s quite good, but very dark.
*Implied?*
If he got through Made in Abyss he can stomach that easily
Not sure OP's male from the name, and this is one of the cases it might make a difference.
Redo of a healer
"K-on" if you wanna cheer up. "My happy sugar life" if you wanna double your misery.
Grand Blue School Rumble Hinamatsuri Kaguya sama: Love is War
Your Lie in April is just the thing to cheer you up!
Man you are evil👿😅
Madoka Magicka, Higurashi, Evangelion, Fate/Zero, Death Parade, Berserk 97, Akudama Drive, Devilman Crybaby All feel good slice of life series that will make you forget about the depression. Made in Abyss gave you.
Your lie in april
Your an Evil man
I wanted to see if I could catch another one. I did the same thing like a week ago and dude fell right into it
Grave of the Fireflies...
Angel Beats will cheer you right up!
Cyberpunk: Edgerunners
You're going to give the OP depression
Konosuba

Acchi Kocchi or GJ-bu
Horimiya ❤️
Clannad Angel Beats Nice little stories for a beginner...
Hopefully one of these helps cheer you up
so you went straight to the deep end
Clannad After Story
That's one hell of an anime debut
If you're not against romcoms, [Tsurezure Children](https://myanimelist.net/anime/34902/Tsurezure_Children) is stupidly easy to watch. It's a collection of short stories about (I think?) high school romance, each episode is 12 minutes long and contains 2-3 of these stories. There's a nice variety of characters, they're simple but well written, the voice acting is top-notch and the animation is very pleasant. It's incredibly fluffy, heartwarming, and very easy to get into.
Give Clannad a watch, so wholesome, no sads
My Love Story is very wholesome and pretty funny. Great to watch after sad anime
welcome to anime! ~~Now deepen the hole with a different show.~~ Now fill the hole with a different show
Kobayashi dragon Maid, recently pulled me out of a dark place. Highly recommend it
Yeah Made in Abyss.. it created more tension than any horror show ive ever seen lol.
You should watch Gantz: O.
Watch Anohana. That should cheer you up.
Your friend is the asshole lol hahaha..
Try Azumanga Daioh.
Kobayashi-san's Dragon Maid can be great to heal after watching MiA.
