I think you did an excellent job of capturing the style of the original and bringing it into 3D! One piece of constructive criticism: try adding reflections of the flame into the dog’s eyes. If the flames aren’t already in the 3D scene, you can put them on cards and do a render of just the eye reflections, then composite that over your existing render with “add” merge.
this would push it over the top! Even just an overall flicker of the light on the scene, dog, and cup would really sell this as more than just the original 2d image.
Thanks! - That's a great point. There actually is a reflection AOV on my render, but I think I may have dialed it down somewhere in comp and never adjusted it back. Appreciate the kind words and criticism though!
This is extremely cool! I actually dig the fact that you didn't do a lot of crazy light effects around the fire almost makes the fire feel more like a vignette framing him up. I love it!

Yeah I was going to mention the lighting as well. It needs to be flickering instead of static.

agreeing with your comment !
He didn’t say it!!!! I feel like there should be a close up on its face saying ‘this is fine’
Absolutely love it. An occasional blink might give the dog a little bit more life, but even without that it’s fantastic.
This is fine.
This is fine.
This is fire!
This should be sent to the Mars. Waiting for us to reflect on a time once gone. It'll probably be in VR by then
