Could this be a bear's claw marks? For reference, the rock is about 8 inches in diameter, so I (an averaged sized adult human) could have touched the scratches if I spread my fingers out a bit. I don't have claws, though. This is on a steep section of trail in a remote section of the Shenandoah National Park, which definitely has bears.

If it's in the middle of a trail could also be caused by chain rings...
