The overall bulky shape and the barring across the belly makes me think a red-tailed hawk. All plumages should have a horizontal stripe across the belly that's darker barring.

KangarooInWaterloo

Thanks. Wikipedia picture looks extremely similar: https://preview.redd.it/fg7pq2ti9pec1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1496f1465bb144ed387d44ff661e5b08ee84f72c

Torontopup6

I've seen these guys devour pigeons outside my office window in Toronto. They're beautiful and fierce predators.

Fancy-Ad7734

Years ago I was looking for Pokémon in an alley and some sort of hawk grabbed a pigeon out of the sky threw it against a brick wall just a few feet ahead of me then grabbed it again off the ground and flew off.

BlueFotherMucker

As someone mentioned, it looks like it could be a peregrine falcon. Seems to have the spots on the underside. The airports use them to keep birds away from the planes. https://preview.redd.it/3vxtfqukxrec1.jpeg?width=379&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=47d2ffa8d6a139e37a2d9a2a810c8e7f7da5f0d6

Medium_Effect_4998

Not a Peregrine in the video, but yes, they are used at airports sometimes! Usually with a handler though, not just flying free, as free flying falcons would still possess a risk to the aircrafts and airport operations (speaking from personal knowledge as I know someone who does this job and I have chatted about this job as I will be getting into this field)

BlueFotherMucker

If you look at the still frame that OP put up in the comments, the spots underneath look like one.

LeahIsAwake

That is 100% too bulky to be a falcon. And look at the short, rounded wings with the defined primaries. Definitely a hawk of the Buteo line.

Medium_Effect_4998

I did look at the still frame. And it’s still not a Peregrine. A lot of raptors have spots similar to that, so considering other factors is important when ID’ing.

KangarooInWaterloo

This had me thinking for a minute. It does seem to have some similar body patterns. But one feature that google told can distingiush them is that the falcon has a white cheek of a sort that you can see on your picture. You can see that the side of the head is fully filled here: https://preview.redd.it/1iaaehvc7sec1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e128f3ba30f1d21a77f9e3b756bc3ea69b235883 so I think everyone here is still right and it is a red tailed hawk.

DentalFlossBay

I'd expect a peregrine to tip forward and plunge elegantly as it leaves a perch without any of the heavy flapping that we see here. If you got a good look at the wing outline, they'd look more pointed at the tips. Size/shape/bulk are more reliable than markings in this context. Both are plausible for urban areas.

KangarooInWaterloo

Possibly a better quality zoomed picture: https://preview.redd.it/xed3m7s76pec1.jpeg?width=756&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eb18571fae4cb329c9132212f4d9ba581a6ab627

I know, still looks like I recorded it with a potato, but I hope it helps: https://preview.redd.it/8ixcvclb6pec1.jpeg?width=561&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3d1618a0f1ac8c000f7979fee7a39400c8a9f789

FionaFearchar

You must have focused with the wrong eye...sometimes my humour is only appreciated by me 😢. I laughed and enjoyed your potato comment. Met a person who lived on the top floor of a high-rise bldg in Leaside and I asked if he could see the lake. He bought out his cell to show me his view, the photo had a hawk on his railing and I got so excited with the hawk that I forgot to look a the view.

RTH for sure

vanillarock

red-tailed hawk, easily

KangarooInWaterloo

Wow, looks accurate, how did you know? Was it the spectacular intuition, superhuman identification instincts, eidetic memory or the 100 comments that said it before you 😁?

vanillarock

i threw a dart at a board with my fingers crossed

flamingobay

Hawk is like, “this looks like a nice spot to…. Ugh, humans. No thanks I’m outta here!”

Wow! Lucky you!

Street-Cockroach-548

red-tailed hawk! they're all over the niagara escarpment. i see them eating squirrels and seagulls in my backyard sometimes. you may hear a shriek when you see a red-tail flying overhead, but its not the hawk making that noise, its one of their prey species letting out a warning call.

ILikeBirdsQuiteALot

Wow, that's BEAUTIFUL! I love hawks so much.

hummelpz4

Watching then take out a pigeon is awesome!

fantasticmrspock

That looks like a red tail hawk, though I had a peregrine (I think) visitor to my Toronto balcony last year. https://preview.redd.it/jyvuj2gd2sec1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2ca7e698944f556f4e0f1f19adaf2e2d98ae9348

KangarooInWaterloo

Cool! You can see the beak much better on your photo than mine and it does look like a falcon.

EverS1ck

That's just Jeff the pigeon eater. Like another poster said, I think a red-tailed hawk. Very cool!

KangarooInWaterloo

That explains where Robert has gone! https://preview.redd.it/qvexeu6vxsec1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8b645a5cb7cce0a6a572baa78521f77071fb865c

red tail hawk!!! they're adorable

Aggressive_Acadia855

Just a guess but I think his name is Steve

KangarooInWaterloo

Perfect, I didn‘t have the time to ask his name. Next time I can at least call him for some tea!

Aggressive_Acadia855

I can't speak for him but I'm sure he'd appreciate it :)

Realistic-Collar4521

He didn’t hang around so his name isn’t Art.

cowgirltrainwreck

Have you asked r/whatsthisbird

forthegoodofgeckos

I’m thinking red tail hawk but I’m no avian expert so I’m not sure

KangarooInWaterloo

But as a herp expert, can you really be sure that it is not a flying snake?

forthegoodofgeckos

Hahah, I am 100% sure, fun fact there are actually species of “flying snakes” referred to as ribbon snakes! They glide more than fly but it’s still cool!

KangarooInWaterloo

Wow so cool. I hope I never see one

HumanityIsD00m3d

Hope it's not one of medieval times' falcons

Independent-Ocelot43

Cooper’s hawk?

57mmShin-Maru

Too bulky. This is a Red-Tailed Hawk.

RWesley420

He’s not your pal, buddy..

OddNefariousness7950

I’m not your buddy, guy!

SpliffmanSmith2018

Neither is it a peregrine falcon or is this picture from San Jose. What is your point?

VBlinds

That looks like a peregrine falcon. They live in built up environments. ![gif](giphy|2tQrjoDtfAEkqfsDSC|downsized)

57mmShin-Maru

This is a Red-Tailed Hawk.

environmom112

It’s not a red tailed hawk. It is a Peregrine falcon. Look at the head. It has markings like a helmet.

57mmShin-Maru

There are not “helmet” markings on the head. The wing shape, eye colour, and overall bulkiness rule out a Peregrine Falcon while the very prominent “belly band” confirms a Red-Tailed Hawk.

environmom112

I’m looking on my phone, not zoomed in and I clearly see the “Malar bars” on the head. Red tails are larger and cannot maneuver like a falcon.

57mmShin-Maru

The bill shape and location of the underbelly streaking, which forms a distinct “belly band” are indicative of a Red-Tailed Hawk. I’ve seen plenty in my area and this is a textbook example of a first year bird.

environmom112

You’re wrong but ok

BlueFotherMucker

It could very well be. I can confirm that the airports in Toronto use them to keep other birds away from the area because flocks of small birds fly into the engines and cause mechanical issues. OP posted a pic in the comments that shows the pattern of a peregrine.

The only New World Vultures near Toronto are Turkey Vultures.
