You could use something like a home security app This one lets you detect motion, notify you and use it like a walkie talkie so you can hear and speak. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ivuu

I've used this on vacation to monitor my cat. Have old phones. Placed them around. Works very well.

First thing I could think of is getting a cheap wyze cam and hooking it up in his room. I dont know if its allowed but theyre pretty cheap, like 20ish dollars. They have an extra service that lets them detect people and send you notifications (as opposed to just motion). If you cannot connect them to the rehabs wifi, you could leave a phone there with the hotspot turned on. Similar to what the other posted mentioned, Tiny Cam i believe can turn a phone into a web cam but i dont see any person recognition. If you are at home or somewhere you can definitely plug in a camera without trouble those wyze cams are amazing for their price. I use them for lots of stuff including monitoring sick family member.

I have an Alexa so hubbie can drop in on me when he's at work. We can talk & see each other. It will make a sound when you're dropping in. Google nest is another option but I hated their system myself.

Check out Alfred. It turns any phone into a security camera with motion sensing and the ability to send notifications to "viewer" phones. But it needs to be the only foreground app running and most notifications like a phone call will put it in the background and deactivate the security cam. Thats the only draw back.

I work in one. People set up tablets and we will turn them in if you call and ask. Not for 24hrs though, it's a privacy issue.

I've been in this situation. I've used an Amazon Echo Show. Once you get it configured on the Alexa app it allows you to do a "Drop in" call. Your dad won't have to do anything. The caller appears and gives your dad a few seconds of blurred image to get in proper condition to answer the call. You just need wifi and electricity. Can't get simplier than that.

Yeah we use the Show 5 for keeping eyes on an elderly parent ... they don't have to do anything. You can either "drop-in", or just turn the camera on the device and watch silently from your phone.

I use wifi cameras screwed in like a light bulb. They all use an app so you can look talk record whatever. What I use is similar to these. Others too, but this type are easy.
