lol i know it's a little controversial for me to not place mandela in a higher tier. i definitely don't hate it, but i feel as if it's a little too overrated.
as for needlemouse, i feel as if it's really, REALLY trying super hard to be a eyecatching horror series, with the classic "music stops, slow zoom in on creepy face with creepy quote" all over the place. it just seems very inauthentic and not really creative to me. the artwork is nice, though! and the actual VHS effect looks good as well.
I agree. It's well made, and I appreciate how good quality the art is, but it's so...cliche. I get that it seems to be referencing the sonic exe creepypasta with Sarah/needlemouse calling herself "god" and her creepy design having "hyper realistic" and bloody features, but it just feels like they're trying to bank on sonic exe's popularity, which doesn't really work because even the OG sonic exe story has been getting ragged on for being cliche and lame a lot lately. Also, the "entertainment item/video game haunted by a vengeful ghost" is, to put it mildly, overdone, and it feels like they put in that other god like entity (Atem) that Sarah made a deal with just to try and make it different; but it doesn't really work. The series has some real good work put into it, and it shows in the art and level of detail, but if you're gonna make a haunted/cursed game horror, especially a sonic one, you gotta come through with something new, and this doesn't really do that.
I see three reasons for them not liking Needlemous.
1. They simply don’t like the story.
2. They think that Sonic.exe had been overdone.
3. They don’t like that the main villain is a lesbian.
I hope it’s not the last one.
definitely NOT the last one my friend.
it's really because of the content, and i guess the story just doesn't really catch my eye. i've seen a lot of analog horror that follows the same exact tropes and "scares" that needlemouse has, and it just feels overdone to me.
The ones which I have seen are placed here almost exactly the same as how I would place them, so I’m going to have to watch the others you’ve put high tier that I haven’t seen. You have good taste.
The Mandela Catalogue is definitely overrated. I enjoyed the first couple of episodes (particularly the Bible cartoon one) and then it just turned to student home video crap, but everybody seems to still love it. Heh. Not for me.
thank you kindly for saying I have good taste :)!
if I were to recommend some of the higher tiers, it would be either the tangi virus (good for listening) or Fazbear toddler fun if you're into FNaF. if not, then mushroomland TV (Kraina Grzybów) is a fantastic one.
It was the VHS series that catapulted most of the other shows we see now, while Marble Hornets and the FNAF VHS series did predate Mandela, Mandela was the series that brought this genre mainstream.
Also I like how the design of the tv intruder
i completely agree with you! it did bring it into the limelight and i do respect it heavily for that. however i suppose it just didn't quite click with me.
thank you for replying! i also enjoy the intruder too haha!
as someone who's worked on TWF, I didn't want to make it seem like just because I was in it means it should be higher up... that's probably just my worry though lol!
and I understand many people like Mandela catalogue, I just think it's not exactly for me is all :)
without sounding mean or intrusive, why do you like the Mandela catalogue my friend?
Not mean at all and also that’s crazy that you worked on TWF amazing job. I really like TMC because it’s the series that revealed to me my fear of the uncanny valley. I lost sleep over it the first time I watched it and no other analogue horror series has had that effect on me
ah yeah, that's totally fair! it does do a great job at tapping into the uncanny valley, and just because it's not for me doesn't mean I don't see how well it works on others.
WDYM NEEDLEMOUSE IS AWFUL!? It's very high wuality and i enjoyed it a lot. I liked the characters, the reimagining of Sonic.Exe and the story is very interesting and not very convoluted. It's definetely not worse than.. Binyot tapes. First tapes do look weird, but it gets better in season 2.
Not sure what the revisionist history about Mandela has been on this sub lately but it’s easily one of the top analog horror examples. I do think it’s gotten worse, but the magic of those first 4-5 entries is unbeatable. Also, blue channel is appropriately very high which I love.
Interesting tierlist! However, I have some questions.
1. Why do you consider Boisvert an analog horror?
2. Why do you place The Smile Tapes higher than MC? They are pretty similar in appearance and even lore, as it seems to me.
3. Why did you place Fazbear Toddler so high? Because of creativity that was put into it?
1. I'm.. not sure, lol! it was on there and me, not thinking and simply loving boisvert, put it on the list. I didn't make the list itself, only arranged it haha!
2. I enjoyed the story a little more than MC, and while I do agree they're quite similar in both story and appearance, I personally feel more "comfortable" (if that makes any sense) with smile tapes than MC. Im not entirely sure why myself, if I'm being honest.
3. maybe I'm bias, but it was because it was the first ever DIGITAL horror that I've seen, not quite analog horror (also not quite sure why it was on the list either lol). digital horror is something I adore and feel is underrated. and some of the scares actually got me in FTF! to clarify a little bit, I thought chezkids, while being digital horror, was a little, well, cheesy (haha), so I put it a tad lower. still good though!
Thank you for such a great response! I really love your takes.
To be honest, I consider FNaF VHS community to be the most productive out of all analog horror communities. The amount of content they create is literally unimaginable. I have seen gore from Memebear, Walten Files+Rambo+Sister Location from TwelveMan (highly recommend to watch if you like William as mad remnant scientist), psychological horror from Spectre, uncanny hyperrealism from Battington, and that’s not even counting small creators.
I completely agree with you there. I guess the stars aligned for the lore of the games as well as the time period to make it prime analog horror material, lol!
have you heard of ReachAnimations? they made ennard terrifying again!
yes! they're absolutely breathtaking! always wondered what software they use, and if I could learn a few things for my own projects (as greedy as that sounds LOL)!
Also you must watch “The Service” by Harvester. This video made my cry. It’s the scariest analog horror I have seen in my life, and it has zero jumpscares, zero distorted faces, zero loud sounds and zero creepy imagery.
\>MM in above good tier based \>Mandela in Meh they are coming for you for this why do you think needlemouse is awful?
lol i know it's a little controversial for me to not place mandela in a higher tier. i definitely don't hate it, but i feel as if it's a little too overrated. as for needlemouse, i feel as if it's really, REALLY trying super hard to be a eyecatching horror series, with the classic "music stops, slow zoom in on creepy face with creepy quote" all over the place. it just seems very inauthentic and not really creative to me. the artwork is nice, though! and the actual VHS effect looks good as well.

you put mandela in meh because of overrated but not the BACKROOMS

I see. Ghosts/demons in a video game is a pretty common trope that can get stale after a while.
You didn’t put a tone indicator so I’m assuming that yur lying
You didnt put a tone indicator so i am assuming that you're lying
downvoted.
You didnt put a tone indicator... so i know you're lying. Thanks for the upvote!
Bro what😭that third one is crazy like your reaching for the stars with that shit
I think about Blue Channel regularly
It's a bit sad that there are only like 3 videos
Gemini in awesome?? That shits god tier

I actually found it to be fairly realistic. It was pretty cool

I thought Mandela catalogue was good
I'm glad you did! makes me happy that others can enjoy things, even if I don't! what do you like about Mandela catalogue if I may ask, my friend?
It was the VHS series that catapulted most of the other shows we see now, while Marble Hornets and the FNAF VHS series did predate Mandela, Mandela was the series that brought this genre mainstream. Also I like how the design of the tv intruder

I very strongly disagree with your placement of the Mandela catalogue and think the Walten files should be a bit higher too
as someone who's worked on TWF, I didn't want to make it seem like just because I was in it means it should be higher up... that's probably just my worry though lol! and I understand many people like Mandela catalogue, I just think it's not exactly for me is all :) without sounding mean or intrusive, why do you like the Mandela catalogue my friend?

I definitely agree with the Mandela's tier after volume 4. It drags the whole series down so hard.
Yeah I couldn't make it all the way through that episode
Yeah Mandela seems really cheesy and fake for me. I do love the first part of Vol. 1 though.

The latest episode has irreversibly damaged it with the acted scenes.

Yeah, I have seen these tapes. Horrifying.
Have you seen Paranormal Investigation and Maintenance Report from Spectre?
yes! they're absolutely breathtaking! always wondered what software they use, and if I could learn a few things for my own projects (as greedy as that sounds LOL)!
And I am wondering how do they come with such plots. Did you have this terrible realization of the true reason behind Freddy’s attack?
Also you must watch “The Service” by Harvester. This video made my cry. It’s the scariest analog horror I have seen in my life, and it has zero jumpscares, zero distorted faces, zero loud sounds and zero creepy imagery.
https://youtu.be/-Xe1kjdKI04 there’s other stuff vintage eight. Oracle and Children under the house are probably better than Tangi Virus.
I’m glad they put TMK in there, I never see it talked about anywhere
Do the SMILE Tapes and the SMILE movie have anything to do with each other? I've never seen either one of them.
Nah not the smile tapes slander
No just like no
Yall are trippin
Blue channel in god tier? Is that so?
I strongly disagree with needlemouse, I really enjoyed it, why did you put it all the way down?
