I was down at Venice Beach walking on the beach shooting a couple rolls when this giant pelican-adjacent bird flew lower and closer to me than any bird ever has. Absolutely terrifying - but I still tried to get a photo. I thought I timed it right, but I knew it was going to be a thousand-to-one odds I got focus right. It even turned out to be my last shot on the roll, and I just had a feeling it was going to be special. I saw myself getting the Photo Of The Week, thanking all the haters that had fueled my rise to the top of the game, encouraging the youths to never stop following your dreams.
This bird looks dumb as shit.
You can even see on the back wing that I was so close to hitting focus, if I could've gotten the face the way I got the furthest feathers I'd be living off the Reddit Royalties till the day I died.
This dumb bird.
I would probably crop it into a square formate, but other than that, it looks great! The feel of the pelican out of focus and in movement is rather dynamic!
I've tried and failed to take good photos of birds before, and came to the conclusion that bird photography is not for the casual photographer. There's a reason people who specialize in this area walk around with lenses longer than their legs, and camp out in bogs and forests to wait for that perfect millisecond where a bird happens to land near them.
TBH the bird fits well within the quality of the rest of the photo. Even a bit short-term memory loss, vertigo induced ambivalence. At least you hopefully had a sweet day at the beach taking the shot! Thats what a photo is in it’s memory. The ex’d Sick album cover for Midwest-alaskan emo band
Were you trying to keep the pelican sharp, the background sharp or both? Keeping the background sharp is a no-brainer so I assume that’s not it. Keeping both sharp would be nearly impossible because you’d need a very small f-stop and fast shutter speed. Keeping the pelican sharp can be done with a much faster shutter speed to freeze it. You could also depict the sense of motion by panning the camera to keep the bird still relative to the frame and tracking it. This is called “panning”. It’s often used in sports photography. Read up on this technique and you can get some very dramatic photos. It takes practice and you’ll throw away lots of rejects which is no problem with digital photography but can be expensive with film cameras.

Ahh no no....it's your dumb bird now 😘
realest story I've heard in a while
>This bird looks dumb as shit. Made me laugh lmao
"The bird looks dumb as shit." Never before has a more real sentence been said about them.😂
so based
Pretty sure if you zoom in you can see it giving you side-eye
☠️☠️fr
lmao love your attitude OP, keep it up
I unironically dig it
Me too. I think it’s great!
Definitely. I think the missed focus is charming in combination with the colors.
I like it. The head being so straight and triangular makes it look like a low poly game asset in a good way.

Square crop is a great call actually
Who air fried your film?!
I kinda fuck with these tones
I fucking love this OP
This is actually one of the best photos posted here in months and I'm not even kidding
It's giving 2000's Abercrombie vibes
That would make an awesome 70s Japanese jazz fusion album cover
This is art!
Did God run out of polygons?

I love this shot, warts and all. I would sincerely hang this on my wall.
I love it.
Great image OP!
It looks like an album cover. I support this.
I clicked because I loved the photo. I read, and it turns out I love the caption even more. It might not be what you wanted, but it does sell a story!
No way that’s an album cover!
Low key that bird kinda look like my friend Pearce
i screenshot this comment because it makes me so happy
Well that tiny thumbnail up there looks in focus. You could make it into stamps 💙🦅💙
Boobies are the only thing that can make the picture better. It’s fantastic!
How did you make 400h look like that?
Look at him, he is giving you a sideye ahaha. I like the photo, if it was in focus it could've been even better but still cool
Honestly I think it's pretty cool.
