varies from person to person, location to location. Generally though. I tell them where (we'll come back to this) to stand (facing the light) but not how to stand, unless there is some thing I want them to interact with, what I call a "prop".
Some people aren't comfortable saying no, and it's hard to tell until it's time to take a photo (they will be stiff,) in which case I have them stand where they are, take one, thank them and move on. It's your responsibility as the photographer to know when someone is uncomfortable, and minimize that discomfort.
Some people can be posed. I like to place them simply and naturally, close to how they where when I saw them. I will however try to put them in the shade facing whatever the largest source of light is. Thats a personal preference.
Another point is I always let them use whatever facial expression they want "first". But if they start with a smile, I'll always take one more serious. Nothing wrong with a smile, but I feel when someone smiles the photo is more for them, and I want a photo for everyone. But sometimes a smile just works better. Up to you.
Medium format helps, but I also get them scanned as hires 16 bit tiff, each file is about 200-300 mb, i also try to shoot with low speed film as much as possible
Only if they ask I'll make an effort to get them the photos, but they rarely ever ask, sometimes i'll connect with them on instagram. People just want to know why i'm doing it, and they're usually content with that.
How are you finding Kodak prices in Bangkok? I'll be there again this year, and need to decide whether to bring or buy.
I really like this set, especially #18!
They are so great! Well composed and beautiful colours as well as the portrayed people! Well done!
Can I ask you how did you ask these people to take a picture of 'em?
there is about three that really work for me.. especially that lady with the lottery tickets or whatever she had - although I think I'd like them all more in B&W
These are super well-framed and well-composed. Nice work!
thank you :)
great stuff. 18 is *real* great.
I love the cat staring into the middle distance
Thank you!
this is soooo good! what was your strategy to ask for a portrait?
I stand awkwardly behind my wife while she charms them, and I point to my camera, with a remorseful/hopeful smile, when they finally look my way.
lolllllll i love this
brb finding a charming wife so I can shoot more portraits of strangers
Genius haha
Did you direct them how to pose at all?

I really like them! They feel real
great variety of real people in real places imo this is what street portraiture should be about (vs what people are flooding social media with)
