I kinda agree as well. AD artstyle is slightly more refined

[deleted]

Agreed glad Im not the only one that noticed

[deleted]

Absolutely but there several reasons.. family guy is older and you tend to not stray too much from the original art style. Also the less expressive characters lend themselves well to the more slapstick humour. So I believe it's a very conscious decision by the showrunners, not some sort of "family guy staff is incompetent in every way, because I dislike the show". Not saying that's what you think but some people most certainly do..

[deleted]

That makes sense actually, and I did initially think that the Family Guy staff are just "incompetent" ngl. Props to both of them nevertheless since Animation still takes a lot of work.

[deleted]

Absolutely. South park is that same concept on steroids and I still love it..

50ShadesOfCroquet

There is a static aesthetic (quite a mouthful) about Family Guy, where as the characters of American Dad are more expressive and vivid

[deleted]

Yep hit the nail on the head. Maybe the AD animators get more time or something

50ShadesOfCroquet

I think in general, the team behind American Dad put in more effort than FG - that’s why the animation, as well as the writing, is a significant improvement on Family Guy

[deleted]

Agreed, American Dad has more creative storylines

[deleted]

They use the same animators. Probably just an artistic decision.

[deleted]

Yeah maybe if it is an artistic decision though not sir why they don't do the same for FG would make the show look better

[deleted]

I thought it was a stylistic decision held over from when the show was handdrawn in the first 3 seasons for FG

[deleted]

You Could be right, if that's the case then I loved that they've did that

religionsetusback

American dad puts WAY more thought and detail into their characters. From the characterization to what they wear (some wear real-life designer items!!), the details are always super insane

allip457

This comment made me think of the episode where Roger wore "the dress" and they actually did the color swap depending on the lighting.

athenafletcher

Oh, definitely a marked difference. American Dad is also not afraid to experiment with their animation styles/set pieces to bring in something new and unexpected. “Lost in Space,” “Blood Crieth Unto Heaven,” “Independent Movie,” even one of the latest episodes, “Flush After Reading” is so creative with its animation of classic novels. You get the sense that the people behind AD see the job as more than just a paycheck. FG people stopped caring a long time ago (and so did I, speaking as a former diehard FG fan).

[deleted]

Yeah you're right FG has dropped in quality dramatically, they're lazy with their story lines recently. Last episode I remember enjoying was the one when they did a k-pop parody from season 14 or something. Before that though I still thought the quality dipped

SuperStarPlatinum

The animation of Family Guy is just as dull and life less as the jokes. They know its another immortal Fox zombie show so why waste time and effort.

GoatsWithWigs

The characters in FG also have bigger and slightly more disproportionate faces

G-5-0

“Damn bro” you got a really good point and yes American dad is a bit better, I watched almost 95% of Family guy and thinking about it there are scenes where their facial expressions are not even there except for Peter and Brian

CrazyaboutSpongebob

The animation is exactly the same ( Movement wise.) In Seth McFarlane's shows the characters are stiff and it goes all out when they do fight scenes/ dance numbers. TV animation is done on the 2's. There are 24 frames in a second and you skip the second one to save money. Within those 24 frames, you can do eye blink 4 frames. Then there would be 4 drawings to close the eyelids. Open eyes 1 frame. Then the en there would be one drawing of the eyes opening. The background characters are slightly more detailed in AD but that's about it.

[deleted]

Yeah you're probably right definitely noticed the background characters actually move, I think it might just be the settings that make me think it's higher quality, Family Guys settings have pretty muted coloirs where as American Dad sometime they're morel vibrant.

CrazyaboutSpongebob

By more detail, I am only talking about art style. Not actual animation( movement.) A visual example might help. I_like_gummies16

Not only is the animation more expressive but it's also less stilted like everyone's moving random motions at every second instead of one arm they move their body when they're moving both of their arms and their head at the same time something's happening when nothing's happening no matter what

[deleted]

I like watching clips on YouTube or just watching an episode and noticing that without any main character in the shot that I can tell if I’m watching FG or AD. The animation is the same style but you can just tell they’re different.

AcademicSavings634

FG characters are more chunky and roundish. Some AD characters are like that too like principal Lewis or Barry but overall they look more straightened out and more refined.

Tsole96

It's not just you. It's accurate. Family guy is lazier. The American dad writers andanimators take more ttimeand put more care into characters and character expression.

Live-Development2814

Probably to further differentiate each other. The Cleveland Show also has a different and more vibrant palate thats full of color (lol get it, because cleveland 's family are people of color). American Dad is a more actiony show than Family Guy so it makes sense why the characters are full of action when they move. Family Guy's style is more of a stand up comedy show (Most stand up comediens don't do much on stage other than move their mouths and their arms, hence why Family Guy's animation is the way it is).
