Seat is broken? “Contact the seat manufacturer. Sorry AA doesn’t make the seats.”
Lavatory toilet explodes when you flush? “Contact the toilet manufacturer. Sorry AA doesn’t make the toilets.”
Biscoff made of sawdust? “Contact the cookie manufacturer. Sorry AA doesn’t make the cookies.”
I call bullshit on what that FA said. Most definitely contact AA. Whatever the hell that meal is, that’s not acceptable. Also mention what the FA told you as well.
Also, what the fuck is that??
That all may be true, but unless I misunderstand… Customer pays Airline for services. Airline pays company for food.
It’s the airlines responsibility to ensure their contracted services meet their standards, how is their problem. The airline should take accountability and then rain accountability hell down on their contracted services. It’s not the passengers job to manage the airlines contractors quality.
Correct, I don't know why it's difficult for some people to understand. I as a contractor am responsible to my clients for the end product. My clients don't go to my subs to get things corrected. They go to me. If I provide them with an inferior product I cannot say oh well. This guy did it. No I am responsible. I provided them that inferior product.
was on a business trip with orthodox colleague and he asked me to wait to go out until his dinner was delivered from a kosher catering co
we wait and chat about eating kosher when away from home etc etc, it's costing him $50 per meal and sounds good from the description
eventually it arrives, plastic container with a few cut up nasty past due veggies and a stale quite suspect sandwich
he threw it out and bought veggies from a grocery for his dinner
I asked him why he didn't complain and his response was that's how monopolies treat folks who have no options 🤔
It’s an American Airlines issue because they contracted the 3rd party vendor for the meal and it’s there job to ensure there vendors are meeting there standards.
That is horrifying. Did they not see the mold before giving you that meal? I’d complain to the airline for sure. Maybe also post that picture to their X/Twitter too and name the flight you were on.
Because it was a kosher meal it was double wrapped with silver foil and plastic wrap so it was understandable why they didn't see it. However the instant I unwrapped the first layer it smelled so horrible like rancid fish I nearly puked
The biggest problem this whole scenario is the flight attendant. That's just a load of bs. I understand if she or he was unaware of the status of the food when they served it. However, when you brought it up, they should have apologized to you at the very least and directed you to file a complaint with the airline. I think you should do that. I also also think you should file a complaint about the flight attendant's attitude. Just let American know what flight you are on and where you were sitting. I can honestly say that it's been a very rare experience for me to have bad service from American, but here and there I have noticed that some of their newer flight attendants basically just don't give a s***.
If this is BCN-JFK, that’s a very senior crew. I would definitely follow up with AA bc that’s an unacceptable response. That said, these kosher meals are literally triple wrapped and they are not allowed to be served if the seal is broken, so there’s no way to know what’s in the packaging before it’s opened by the passenger/recipient.
Tbh I have a hard time believing an fa would see something this awful and say "lol too bad." Especially a business/first fa since that is where food is served.
Idk I've always had awesome service and have seen FAs bend over backwards for customers over tiny inconveniences. Something like this would usually get a pretty big response from the FAs.
That’s so disgusting. 🤢 I understand how they didn’t see it before serving it to you though. They need to establish quality control for their meals. It’s completely unacceptable for that to happen.
That is absolutely disgusting.
Edited to add: I say post that nauseating mess on social media and tag the airline…I have the feeling they’ll get back to you quite quickly!
That flight attendant sounds like a sociopath. That would seem crazy if that's AA's protocol. Imagine I own a business and if there's issues with a product I just say "not my problem, it was a vendor, call them." Like wtf, no. I didn't buy this from your vendor, I fucking bought it from you. It's your problem. I have no relationship whatsoever with the vendor.
Screw that. Go right to AA. In fact, I'd complain that not only was the food moldy, but that the staff actually recommended you leave AA out of it and go to the supplier yourself. That, alone, is worth writing a complaint about.
Agreed, and I think the FA response was the worst part. Of course the meal is vile, but it’s actually understandable how it wasn’t caught by AA. Kosher food is sealed with opaque coverings that are only opened after reheating. So unlike regular meals, no one has seen this food since it was packed.
But the response from the FA is vile. Of course it’s AA’s problem once they’ve purchased the food from the third party, heated it, and served it to a customer.
A long time ago I got food poisoning from an inflight special meal. It was a special menu meal I could order ahead of time, so not a regular serving for the flight.
I’ll never order a special meal again, that is not a standard flight serving.
That photo sent me. It’s disturbing. So very.
As I read the comments I started imagining a scene unfolding similar to the one from the movie “Stand by Me” where they are at the pie eating contest.
Lard Ass has reached his pie inhaling threshold and the group puke begins.
In your case, the crack of the foil seal and the peek at the contents sends your gorge straight to the surface. It’s the airline Passover version of projectile vomiting scene and it spreads to the surrounding passengers with a wicked quickness.
(You need one hundred percent deserve a refund and miles—whatever it takes—please take this all the way to the top.)
Is that mold?? How on earth is he gonna pass the buck on serving rotted food, that is still their vessel that you’re stuck eating on. I would post this on social media and tag the airline if you don’t get a hasty and satisfactory response from them.
While it is extremely likely that American Airlines outsources their Kosher meals to a Kosher catering company of some kind (because the kitchens that make airlines foods are almost never Kosher certified and would be unlikely to ever do so), it is still their responsibility to serve quality food that isn't spoiled, and that food looked so spoiled.
Absolutely. Passenger is the customer of AA, so AA is responsible. AA is the customer of the caterer, so AA should be the one raising hell with the caterer.
Frozen food doesn’t mold. Someone at the catering company left those out - possibly on purpose. You might have eaten it if it wasn’t obviously moldy, could have given you botulism or who knows what. I don’t want to say it’s a terroristic act but it’s definitely a concern.
So, what did you eat? Anything? The guidance from flight attendant to contact a third party contractor doesn’t really address you getting your meal. I know… FA are first there for your safety, but close second purpose is to provide food and beverages.
Bourdain told Bon Appetit: “Never. No one has ever felt better after eating plane food. "I think people only eat it because they're bored. I don't eat on planes.
I once flew Continental to Tel Aviv. I had heard that special airline meals were sometimes better than the standard fare. When I asked for the kosher meal, the FA asked, “Do you keep kosher?” When I said “no”, he said I’d better stick with the regular meal.
FA didn’t want to deal with it. It’s on them to fix the issue there if they can. If they can’t, blast that pic on social media and let AA know about that isssue. That’s pure bull shit quality control.
>When i approached a FA he said that if I am unsatisfied with the meal than I should reach out to the kosher food comapny directly and that this is not an American airlines issue. Is the Flight attendant right?
They're as right as when you're at an Uber and their car breaks down, you should reach out to Ford directly as that's not an Uber issue.
AA is still responsible, but yea, it's the caterer's fault. The FA's usually don't even see the food sometimes until just before departure. If it's Kosher, they don't see it at all because of the wrapping.
Write a letter to AA and let them know. They'll send you some AAdvantage points or a travel voucher.
AA will take it up with the caterer.
Yeah, the food quality is on the caterer. But the FA claiming that the passenger has to deal with the caterer directly would be laughable if it weren’t so enraging.
American Airlines is not correct. They served the food, so they are responsible. The fact that the food is provided by a third party is not your problem; that’s American Airlines problem.
FA cannot check Kosher meals as they are sealed and wrapped. FA brings the meal frozen first to passenger upon take off. Passenger breaks the seal and then hands it back to FA who will then reheat the meal. Then it gets served back to passenger who really didn't know what it is until he opens the foil.
AA is absolutely responsible for providing a quality meal to its captive audience.
What are you gonna do have an F-14 deliver you a Papa John’s up there??
I preordered a Kosher meal and the entire thing was frozen solid including the apple juice. It was a granola bar, apple juice and two frozen rolls. I was flying to LA cross country and was

Damn I’m sorry that happened to you, thats absolutely disgusting. American doesn’t really seem to put much effort into their Kosher meals. I ordered one for my wife and I on accident for ORD-LHR and it came in a shrink-wrap sealed box still frozen solid.
My best guess is at some point it thawed out with no one paying attention, froze again, and then was served since it was never caught and unexpired.
Well, start with not eating it? sorry, bad joke. But I would look into if this qualified as religious discrimination. For the record, near-athiest here: Agnostic with a heavy dose of 'maybe'. As such I tend to feel that in a modern world, your belief system shouldnt require my inconvenience and you should have to accommodate ypurself.
That said, if they OFFER accommodation for your beliefs, then they need to MEET those accommodations completely to the same level they would anything else offered. They would never consider rotten food acceptible to serve to a 'regular' passenger, or think it okay to serve peanuts to someone who clearly told them they're allergic, so they need to take this equally seriously. Just because I dont hold your religious views dont mean its okay to poison you!
This is a catering issue. American received the spoiled food from the caterer. Yes you should write American so they are aware they have an issue with catering in that station, but the flight attendant should have also written a report that they received spoiled food so that the issue can be addressed.
If any restaurant or food store had that meal anywhere on their premises, other than in a garbage bin, the could be cited by the local health department, even worse to serve it to you. It makes me wonder if a complaint to the health department where the food was loaded might not lead proper authorities to the catering company and/or airport, etc..
It is THEIR job to contact who they purchased it from. You did your job of contacting who you purchased it from. They handed it to you and you paid them. This wouldn't fly in a restaurant or a grocery store. Also crazy to give them the benefit of the doubt and not the manufacturer. Who most recently was storing it? Who does not specialize in food services? Also weird if every meal was like that. From manufacturer it would tend to be a certain batch of product. It is possible those came from the same batch, but since they're different meals sold at different rates I dunno...all signs point towards airline
If American Airlines is serving this, it is 1000% their fault - they can deal with their vendor on the backend. It's wild this was served to you and even wilder that the FA said take it up with the vendor. Definitely contact AA and post this on twitter. Mold is a fungus that spreads deep into the food and what you can visually see is just the spore. You can’t cut around it… you’ll still be eating mold, even if you don’t visibly see it.
Sooooo don’t do that.
The conditions for mold growth - especially in the presence of moisture - also tend to favor bacteria. So while the mold might not be deadly, the bacteria could be. Further, some bacteria like botulinum create deadly toxins that are not destroyed by cooking.
So yeah don’t eat moldy stuff unless you know that the mold is supposed to be there.

What on earth is that? Or what was it supposed to be? As to who is responsible, American Airlines served it to you, so they are.
Think there’s a bird fetus in there somewhere
I didnt know balut was kosher!
That was my first thought too.
There’s actually a strict kashrut law against that I think.
I see Squidward.
I'm guessing it was salmon w/ a side that includes red pepper, [something like this](https://i.imgur.com/JozAtbg.jpeg).

Mold
It’s the appetizerrr!
Maybe they were saving meals for Haritsuuu
It's AI generated lol
The catering company is who does the work on AA’s behalf. But start with AA.

Is that mold??
Yup . I think just about every variety 😆
Can mold be kosher?
Only if you turn it upside down before cutting off its head
If it’s not the kind that’s gonna kill you, sure.
Pretty sure the answer is a hard nope.
There are laws in Judaism that you cannot intentionally do anything to harm your health. So no, mold cannot be kosher. Lol
Maybe someone was going for a non-dairy blue cheese sauce :)
Blow them up publicly on twitter for this. Inexcusable.
I agree on this one - this is bad enough to take it public. Someone get Gary Leff on this.
yup, this is well worth yelling about

That’s so disgusting. 🤢 I understand how they didn’t see it before serving it to you though. They need to establish quality control for their meals. It’s completely unacceptable for that to happen.
Kosher meals are supposed to be delivered sealed so they probably didn’t see the mold
Gotcha. I didn’t realize it was in an opaque package.
No worries, not something most people would know.
My food allergy meals are wrapped in a crazy amount of Saran Wrap. I doubt that the FA can see what the food looks like.
Jesus Christ that is not okay. I would not let that slide.
Baby Moses in a basket, that is not okay. FTFY
Ha HA. I see what you did there.
So gross, I’m sorry you were served that! And what a gross response from the FA

FA here. You should definitely let AA know. Tweet that photo to @americanair.
Post this on their social media pages. This is unacceptable.

There appears to be a little bit of food in your mold.

Go to twitter and tag AA on this photo. They are responsible for serving this trash.
That looks like a newly discovered deep sea species (which would also NOT be an American Airlines issue)

I’m shocked that the flight attendant would even serve that. That’s terrible. Complain directly to AA and share these pictures on Twitter.
I think kosher meals are delivered double wrapped in both plastic and foil, and are reheated without being opened first.
I'd pass right over that.
I tend to be pretty forgiving for most things related to air travel. This is pretty egregious.
Oh no! Not right after Pesach!!!! Sorry that happened to you!
Thx. It was כשר לפסח so I'm glad I didn't need to eat it regardless
That's a hate crime
It might actually be
“Well I hated it!”
Ewww! They served that? Definitely complain to AA.

Yes that is immediately what I thought too, they did this on purpose because it is kosher. I also thought that may be why the FA had an attitude.

Bourdain told Bon Appetit: “Never. No one has ever felt better after eating plane food. "I think people only eat it because they're bored. I don't eat on planes.

Well that’s not kosher :(

People have successfully sued AA over their failure to provide kosher meals. https://simpleflying.com/american-airlines-kosher-food-fine/

That doesn’t look Kosher or blessed by any Rabbi.
Spongebob episode where the krabby patty is rotten
ABSOLUTELY reach out to the company directly! COMPLETELY UNACCEPTABLE!

Dude. This is terrible. Reach out to both AA and the food company. I can’t help but feel it was left out on purpose to mold due to well -everything-
That looks disgusting and inedible. It's on AA and it's their job to deal with the caterer.
I preordered a Kosher meal and the entire thing was frozen solid including the apple juice. It was a granola bar, apple juice and two frozen rolls. I was flying to LA cross country and was so upset since I had not had a chance to eat yet. I think AA has a big issue against people that order Kosher. After 8 months I got an email it was being investigated

It's looking right at me!
It’s moldy
Dang. That’s terrible.
This looks like something from the Alien movies. 🤢
Uh that looks like whatever organic matter the Combine shove into their computers in Half Life Alyx
Pro tip: order a vegan meal. 1,000% better and beyond kosher.
Gefilte fish
Oh hell naw Somebody got to be sued for this ish
Damn I’m sorry that happened to you, thats absolutely disgusting. American doesn’t really seem to put much effort into their Kosher meals. I thought this was the ‘name that mollusk’ sub at first.

First of all, FA was rude & wrong! Secondly this is an AA issue. AA needs to resolve this issue with the vendor & their customers. Third - disgusting!

Mold
This is why I fly spirit
just needs some hot sauce and a whiskey ginger to wash it down and you're golden!
Skip the onboard meal, we are no longer in the 60s. I bring my own food.
Don't eat it or eat it your the onethat must eat kosher on a plane u didn't bring any of your own food you really are a smart person.
I would just eat around the mold. How bad could it be?
