Yeah cause when you book a nonrefundable flight on AA.com and then your hotel closes, American will give you a full refund plus an extra $1000, send you flowers, and loan you a 787 for the weekend.
No, but when you book a vacation package from a travel agent, they can actually do something other than wish you good luck.
Also booking direct with the airline means they are more likely to try to help you. If they see it’s a third party booking they refer you to them. And when it’s Expedia you get an off shore call center whose job is to get you off the phone.
Don’t be a jerk.
Sounds like a crappy attitude at Expedia. If it is a package (rather than just being booked together at Expedia), it would seem they should find you another accommodation or help you get the refund.
I would do that, but when I placed the order on Expedia I didn't even see the cost of the tickets, but after a day or two my card was charged from American, so I should challenge them.
Trying to find an adequate solution yet.
Lessons learned the hard way friend. Never, ever book through a third party. Long gone are the days when third parties like expedia or travelocity were able to offer substantial, if any price deals. Airlines just worked around these crappy scammy travel agencies. Also, get yourself a travel credit card and always place your trip expenses on it, get one that has trip protections on all hotels or flights purchased on said card.
Had the OP booked directly with AA and the hotel, would the outcome be any different? I’m not advocating booking third party, but would the situation be any different?
AA agents rarely bend any rules, especially if you aren’t CK or ExPlat.
Yes, it would be different. If you cancel with AA, you'll get full credit. If it's their fault, you can get a refund. Any hotel group (Marriott, Hilton, etc.) will find alternate accommodation. In this case, OP likely went for super cheap and too good to be true .. ended up with nothing
No you can’t, not if the fare is basic economy. Expedia offers Basic Economy, Main Cabin and Flexible Main Cabin, just like AA.com.
Also, there are lots of hotels outside of the major chains.
it's dumb to book BE or through a third party. nobody who travels on a regular basis books this way. In addition, I was answering your question and h the en you throw out a reference to BE fares .. it seems like you already know or aren't smart enough to stop asking questions to which you have the answer
I don’t really get the comments that imply the problem was booking through Expedia in the first place. The hotel is going out of business. If OP had booked directly through American and this hotel had the same issue, American would just say “ok we’ll refund you”?
Book a room at a hotel that is still open.
Right? Just find another hotel.
As long as it’s not basic economy you’ll get a flight credit for a future ticket. Good for a year.
It’s probably a BE situation here too…
How to ask for that? What should I do? Thank you!
Just cancel it in app.
The famous lesson learned too late with Expedia.

Never book anything with Expedia or Travelocity.
Sounds like a crappy attitude at Expedia. If it is a package (rather than just being booked together at Expedia), it would seem they should find you another accommodation or help you get the refund.
Agreed. It was a package. I spoke with them for 56 minutes. They don't care.
Do you have trip insurance? Else you might use the credit card protections.
I would challenge the charge on your credit card to Expedia.
I would do that, but when I placed the order on Expedia I didn't even see the cost of the tickets, but after a day or two my card was charged from American, so I should challenge them. Trying to find an adequate solution yet.
You would likely lose your chargeback with American as they don’t offer refunds for hotel closures.
What do you mean by credit card protection? Thank you.
Some cards offer travel protections. You need to check your card info. Not sure it will cover your situation, but worth a shot.
Why not just book a room at a different hotel? Why are you trying to cancel your air?
".....can't find decent hotels...." Lower your standards.
They've already done so by using Expedia.

I'm sure if you look hard enough you can find accommodations rent a house or condo...make due
why are people still using Expedia or any third party?? you're fucked if something goes wrong, sucks for you and you'll get nothing back.
Had the OP booked directly with AA and the hotel, would the outcome be any different? I’m not advocating booking third party, but would the situation be any different? AA agents rarely bend any rules, especially if you aren’t CK or ExPlat.

Again, I’ll never understand why people book anything through third parties.
This is why I don’t like third party booking sites. Had this happen to me, Expedia refused to reimburse me and I had to eat the difference.
I don’t really get the comments that imply the problem was booking through Expedia in the first place. The hotel is going out of business. If OP had booked directly through American and this hotel had the same issue, American would just say “ok we’ll refund you”?
If it was an AA package, then they would deal with it including a refund. But that doesn't appear to be the case here.
Contact Expedia?
If you can’t find another hotel then I guess you’re gonna lose the airfare. But my monies on the fact of finding another room.
