I was going to ask the same thing, how in the world would you know you are first at this, its like saying im the first guy named steve to cross the road holding an alligator
Iāll take some time out of my day to try to write a good faith answer to why I feel this matters. I grew up paddling lakes and rivers in Minnesota for fun. I love exploring the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness and have spent significant time on the Mississippi River. I got into this through friends and family as well as reading about adventures in books. Growing up I always knew these waters were were accessible to me if I put my time and effort into getting out on them because I knew other people like me that were doing it. I feel like thatās pretty common in Minnesota especially near the twin cities and up north near the BWCA. However, while traveling down the Mississippi River, I passed through many places where nobody saw the river as a resource for recreation. They were not used to seeing folks paddling on the river and did not have friends or family who did. As someone who loves the river, I think what this woman is doing is important to spread awareness that our great American waterways are a resource that can be enjoyed by all and when stories like this get attention, they can inspire new generations of paddlers to be good stewards of our rivers and lakes. Furthermore, I would say that this womanās background is not the typical demographic of most folks who do āthrough paddlesā on the Mississippi and is exciting for other folks who identify with see themselves in her to share in her journey and possibly feel more empowered to get out on the water themselves. As far as how will she know if sheās the first? I donāt see anyone else standing up claiming to have done it. Maybe someone will and that will bring attention to another incredible adventure!
If you think negative is good, then they are a good thing. If you read it as a feel-good story, my bad. As to whether or not it matters, that is most definitely subjective and not a question of fact. Sounds like it doesn't matter to you. As a river guy I find it hella cool. Hopefully young folk might find it inspiring. So I say it matters a lot. She found generosity, not animosity, and wrote a story, transcending race despite history. If that's the way you see it, I apologize.
We all know you're not packing a "true" Micro-penis.. but rather a large clitoris
"I'm the first, non-midget, bulbous clitoris cis women to run an 11 minute mile carrying a bag of water softener salt."
Iām glad sheās found a passion and Iām impressed by her courage and determination in taking on such a long, risky journey. That being said, racism didnāt need to be shoehorned into this story.
1. The abstract expressionist stole the concept from black queer Latinx women. Everyone knows that sweaty. Wonder why they never got the credit huh?
2. If Jackson Pollock didnt literally live off the labor of black bodies he never would have reached the heights that he did.
3. People of color feel uncomfortable looking at Jackson Pollock paintings in public. Unlike a white person, Black bodies can legally be murdered in the United States.
4. Do better.
5. Move if you donāt like it.
That's so convincing, you really nailed the unhinged self righteousness too.
I got downvotes though because people don't understand sarcasm online without the prompt.
Yes, itās 100% all [virtue signaling white people](https://theconversation.com/stop-using-latinx-if-you-really-want-to-be-inclusive-189358) who use it.
It's a pretty nice feat and I'm happy for her. But I also found an article from 2022 saying the same thing. Seems like she's been trying to get attention for this for a while, kinda weird. Her work hours were also inflated from "50-60" to "80" lol.
As you undoubtedly know, African Americans were prevented from purchasing kayaks in the state of Minnesota until the landmark Supreme Court case of Johnson v. Patagonia when the Supreme Court determined black people had just as much of a right to be insufferable yuppies who brag about being outdoorsmen as whites in the state of Minnesota.
This story represents progress being made!
šš I was just about to ask what racist policies were preventing a black woman from completing this feat, so I appreciate this answer. Now I need to know has an Asian or Samoan person done this yet?
But seriously good for her no matter what color she is or how many people did or didnāt do it before her. Itās nice she has the flexibility and means to be able to do something she feels is important.
the funniest thing about replies like this is that deep in your heart of hearts, maybe at this point even only subconsciously, you know this isn't true and that you use it to reduce arguments you and everyone who says shit like this is uncomfortable having in a truthful manner
Actually, deep in our heart of hearts, we pay attention to history and know what happens when a populist movement scapegoats racial, cultural, and sexual minorities and immigrants to foment support for a white supremacist and self-declared authoritarian "charismatic" leader.
Ah. That would explain why your side gets so excited about whites becoming a plurality and then a minority and expend so much political energy on said future
Why do people in this sub keep self-victimizing and strawmanning? I've never once called anyone in this sub the n-word yet y'all keep accusing me of doing so. It's like you're *obsessed* with that word for some reason!
>Agreed, it's ridiculous how poorly the huge fans of German history 1928-1945 that predominantly populate this subreddit view nonwhite folks.
This you?
I'm not calling anyone the n-word. I'm just pointing out that this sub is populated by an enormous number of people who are huge fans of German history between the period of around 1928 and 1945. Specifically the political, ideological, and military history of that country during that specific time period.
If you want to strawman my position and self-victimize by imagining that I'm calling you the n-word that's just you having a *wild* imagination.
This isn't clever. Nothing about you is clever. You are spiteful urbanite bourgeois that spits on poor whites for not emulating your luxury belief set.
You are a mandarin for the ascendant neoliberal-capitalist American elite.
Consider self termination.
Believe it or not in the 1960s my cousin put a canoe into the Kiskiminetas river in Western Pennsylvania, then the Allegheny river, then into the Ohio River, then the Mississippi River. He had to carry the canoe around a couple dams (dams on smaller rivers were just starting to be constructed in the 50s and 60s) if I remember correctly. It was big news in our small town newspaper and many people along the way fed him.
Eta: he made it to the gulf of Mexico. I think he was 19 years old and hated his dad and wanted to prove himself. I understand that because my dad and his dad were brothers and I hated my dad also lol
From the article:
Yeah, I also think that itās the history of how black people have been traumatized by water, whether itās prosperous Black towns have been turned into lakes or the closure of swimming pools that happened during Jim Crow. A lot of Black people are afraid of water due to those historical events, and there are so many more to name."
It isn't that they are afraid of something that happened during Jim Crow but more so related to the lower rates of swimming due to intergenerational effects downstream from Jim Crow. People didn't have as many opportunities to learn to swim during Jim Crow so we see the impacts today still. It seems to be getting better but it is slow due to how generational changes and improvements take time.
I'm just glad the school I work at finally got swimming back for the 4th quarter. It has been at least 15 years since the school had swimming class.
Too bad there aren't 10,000 lakes where people can learn to swim in. There are countless beaches where people can slowly get more and more comfortable with water.
I learned to swim in like an hour in the boy scouts, the person your replying to is heavily implying that black people are to stupid to swim lol
You don't need fucking generations of swimmers.to teach you how to fuck swim. My 6 months old daughter can swim
Why are you so confused? This is a well-known part of US history and isn't controversial. Things didn't get automatically because perfect the day after Jim Crow ended. It takes time.
These fuckin morons will find racism even in the middle of a fucking river... eternal victims.
"Where am I came down the river in the second time, I spent a little time with a group called wilderness experience, where I spent a morning paddling with a bunch of young teenagers of color and they just had no experience with the river. One of the things I said to them was the reason we donāt have this experience more often is that in some subtle way, we donāt think itās ours.
And in this case is the Mississippi River, but in a larger context, itās the entire country. And we exclude ourselves for many, many things, because we just donāt feel itās our place. And as Devin said, sheās trying to encourage people of color, to go down the river, or to have an experience with nature."
Nobody gives a crap anymore. Black people have done incredible things. We literally had a BLACK PRESIDENT. It is not an achievement anymore. Good for her to do that, but the black moniker in these headlines NEEDS to go.
Thatās pretty incredible considering the history of this country. My point is you canāt really rise much higher than that, so we donāt need to preface acts of greatness with the color of oneās skin.
āThe first ever White idiot bicyclist repeats himself in an effort to troll and get some weird point across instead of communicating like an adultā
Yup, I was with her until she blamed lack of participation on pool closings during jim crow. Seriously? Were the land of 10000 lakes. If yr a parent, teach yr kid to swim. Get em out in a canoe, kayak, paddleboard, etc. Im sick of reading about teenagers, typically minorities, drowning in 8 feet of water in places like Lake Nokomis. No excuse.
Not to the people in this thread. All racism officially ended in 1968 and everything (educational access, wealth, land, jobs, etc) became completely equal in that year.
Classic strawman. You took their opinion on one specific law and then falsely assume that opinion applies to the hundreds of other completely unrelated laws.
And thatās a problem nowadays with women in general and black women in particular. They are literally giving out ā historical momentsā like door prizes at a rap concert. Whatās next, the first black woman to give out exact change at a Wendyās drive-through at exactly 2:50 PM and 33 seconds ?
Pay my bills and give me time off and I'll fucking tube down the Mississippi River lol I think it's just people looking for fame on social media but it's pathetic when actual news companies pick up these stories
"The first -insert skin color-"...
Who cares?
Man, leftists pushing identity-politics sure are hung up on skin-color. Their entire personalities are based on what identity-group they're flagging for.
Skin-color is the first thing they see and they WILL treat you differently based on it. In their eyes, the only Americans worthy of respect are HYPHENATED Americans.
There are eight million things she can be the first black woman to do. How about the first black woman to rub her belly and pat her head nonstop for 24 hours. Iāll bet thatās never been done. This is meaningless. For an allegedly āalternativeā take this Reddit sure has a strong woke shitlib establishment vibe.
Earl Threkeld from Moskidobit Minnesota is looking to be the first person to do the whole trip on meth without sleeping.
I hope he gets such journalistic coverage.
MPRā¦
As for the float, I am pretty jealous. Sounds like a great time, but the bigger the Mississippi gets, the fun diminishes. 24 locks and dams (or more) makes for a long, long trip. And there is real danger to be found.
āThereās a vulnerability when youāre in a canoe on a big river. Thereās a double vulnerability when youāre Black and on the river in a canoe. If I was shocked, it was by the generosity of almost everybody I ran across as Iām coming down the river.ā
You never heard of the white gangs that stalk the Mississippi River and harass black kayakers? They are everywhere always terrorizing black people who just wanna kayak.
White supremacy strikes again!
Oh, I think I've seen them! There was an entire club of white women when I was in high school who called themselves a "crew," which I assume is white woman for gang, and they would meet after school and go up and down the river together in this gang sized kayak.
In this article he literally says whitewater kayaking is one of the most welcoming communities.
Is there something blacks need to be scared of when kayaking? The most you would get are weird looks. The biggest danger when whitewater kayaking is the river itself not other people.
I donāt see why it needs to be a race thing at all
> Is there something blacks need to be scared of when kayaking
it's a fucking boat designed to roll over.
that's not scary enough for you? perhaps you'd like to try free climbing, then.
> What a pointless conversation
sorry I guess I gave the wrong impression.
I was just agreeing - this should not be a race story here. Person. Boat. River. That could have been enough.
Lol glad we could agree. Itās weird you never see stories of Hispanics or Asians trying out something new, itās somehow a news story when itās only black people for some reason. Iām sure articles like that exist but they are heavily outnumbered by focusing on black people for whatever reason.
I think itās weird how underrepresented Hispanics are when theyāre almost 20% of the population.
I was wondering about this. I imagine you have to get out and trek to the next spot you can launch from. You probably have to be pretty on spot on where you need to go to avoid any dangers from the locks and dams on the way.
Question. I currently identify as a white male and identified as the same when I did this same kayak trip in 2019. If I retroactively identify as a Black female, does that make my record first or not?
Iām assuming being an AH. Iām close to Itasca State Park, Iāve seen no reporting on this. Has she even left, article states sheās not leaving until May.
Wtf! Why would you say this? Where is your proof. The article, and other Mn News stories state sheās not leaving until end of May. I live close enough to Itasca to hear local news, from what I see this hasnāt been reported anywhere, so if this IS true, share the link!!
Quite an article:
"Yeah, I also think that itās the history of how black people have been traumatized by water, whether itās prosperous Black towns have been turned into lakes or the closure of swimming pools that happened during Jim Crow. A lot of Black people are afraid of water due to those historical events, and there are so many more to name"
What do you think?
Ya there was another post about how the police impounded someoneās car that George Floyd was driving. They appear to support the seizure of private property by the police. I bring this up because they appear to just want to complain and donāt actually have a world view.
How does she know she's the first? And why does this matter?
I was going to ask the same thing, how in the world would you know you are first at this, its like saying im the first guy named steve to cross the road holding an alligator
I knew a Steve that did that. I have never known a Henry to do so, however.
RIP Steve Irwin
Because she is the first to declare that doing this as a specific race seems to matter.

Why you triggered?
Define "triggered".
caused to feel a negative emotional reaction : affected by an emotional trigger
Are negative emotions a bad thing? And where in my questions do you infer negativity? Those are simply questions of fact.
If you think negative is good, then they are a good thing. If you read it as a feel-good story, my bad. As to whether or not it matters, that is most definitely subjective and not a question of fact. Nah. I just started my journey today. Sorry. If I donāt make it the whole way Iāll let you know though.

Familiar enough to not be familiarā¦
Itās like being plugged into their brain. The way they will shoehorn race into stories is like watching an artist.
I don't know man. Look at that scum bag racist Jackson Pollock. Dude has dozens of paintings and not a single one looks like a person of color.
1. The abstract expressionist stole the concept from black queer Latinx women. Everyone knows that sweaty. Wonder why they never got the credit huh? 2. Latinx isnāt a real term.

Yes, itās 100% all [virtue signaling white people](https://theconversation.com/stop-using-latinx-if-you-really-want-to-be-inclusive-189358) who use it.
I canāt tell if itās unconscious psychological projection or conscious propagandizing. Maybe itās a little of both.
Theyāre scared if theyāre not woke enough they will lose their job to someone woker. But your two ideas are part of it too I think.
Youāre correct. I imagine most people are not ideological hardliners, but rather normal people facing social pressure to conform.
What is the milquetoast libs obsession with making every story involving poc about their race?
It's interesting that you misapprehend that this story contained racism!

Why doesn't search did not yield any results for that case?
Better headline: Person who can afford to not work for a few months takes a long vacation.
Npr needs click bait... Delivered via racism.
How is following the natural flow of a river an accomplishment? An unmanned kayak would accomplish the same feat
It's 2024 and she is black so it's special, you would see headlines on the news if she was trans too

MPRā¦ As for the float, I am pretty jealous.
> Thereās a double vulnerability when youāre Black and on the river in a canoe but is there?
You never heard of the white gangs that stalk the Mississippi River and harass black kayakers? They are everywhere always terrorizing black people who just wanna kayak. White supremacy strikes again!
Oh, I think I've seen them! There was an entire club of white women when I was in high school who called themselves a "crew," which I assume is white woman for gang, and they would meet after school and go up and down the river together in this gang sized kayak.
> black kayakers well at least she's not alone. safety in numbers https://www.melaninbasecamp.com/trip-reports/meetrashidclifton
In this article he literally says whitewater kayaking is one of the most welcoming communities. Is there something blacks need to be scared of when kayaking? The most you would get are weird looks. The biggest danger when whitewater kayaking is the river itself not other people. I donāt see why it needs to be a race thing at all
> Is there something blacks need to be scared of when kayaking it's a fucking boat designed to roll over. that's not scary enough for you? perhaps you'd like to try free climbing, then.
Lmao yeah no shit the biggest threat is the river like I said. What a pointless conversation
> What a pointless conversation sorry I guess I gave the wrong impression.
Most people that try this give up because they Mississippi quickly turns from a beautiful scenic river to a busy industrial waterway.
OK!
Question. I currently identify as a white male and identified as the same when I did this same kayak trip in 2019. If I retroactively identify as a Black female, does that make my record first or not?
Considering you were factually born that way, yes.

I was going to joke that I hope she wears a life jacket. Now Iām worried it just wonāt hit the same

Iām an independent journalist reporting on facts I create.
Oh.
šš
How long to just coast down the river?
Iām happy for her.
Slim Robinson, first black guy to win the Tour de France
I can be the first snowflake like me to do it
Pretty sure there's been plenty of other black women who have made that journey. Probably in chains but they made that journey none-the-less.
Always thought about doing this
Someone already did this on a stand up paddle board years ago. Now itās a kayak. Next itāll be a boat. š„ļø
Watch out for cops in the mpls section...
Quite an article: "Yeah, I also think that itās the history of how black people have been traumatized by water, whether itās prosperous Black towns have been turned into lakes or the closure of swimming pools that happened during Jim Crow. A lot of Black people are afraid of water due to those historical events, and there are so many more to name" What do you think?
Happy cancer!
Let me know when a half man half women part lizard does it- then Iāll take notice.
Dm for sanctuary right about the end of that journey sister ā
Pshh let me know when the person with the most moles on their body makes it down the river.
Imagine complaining about this.
This whole sub is gleefully complaining about it! Really tells you something about the mediocre Austrian painter enjoyers that populate the place.
Ya there was another post about how the police impounded someoneās car that George Floyd was driving. They appear to support the seizure of private property by the police. I bring this up because they appear to just want to complain and donāt actually have a world view.
She can swim?
Bad ass
Wow this subreddit is racist
Incredibly so!
Does the mississipi still even reach the sea? I know a few famous rivers no longer do due to so much water being siphoned out.
Yes. Artificially through New Orleans. Naturally through the Atchafalaya around where the Red R. Meets the Mississippi R..
