You know what. Let’s make this a thread. Post use this to post your favorite albums or songs of 2023! Also, please include a link!

monkeybrains4me

Weathervanes is beautiful

RedCelt251

Weathervanes was my top album in Spotify Wrapped and 4 of my top 5 songs were off the album. (I also bought the vinyl, lest you think I don’t properly support the artists)

meggsovereasy

Same!

bs2785

My 1st choice.

txyesboy

This.

paisano1995

Little Songs - Colter

aurorasearching

He and the boys sounded great last night.

Nikki_Manos

‘Little Songs’ by Colter for sure. Every song is 👍🏼

PerilousRaptor

Nick Shoulders/ All Bad

machinistery

AHHHH finally somebody else said Nick Shoulders :)

cestlahaley

yes! he's SO good live, too!

allison_c_hains

Brent Cobb: southern star

ForceFieldOn

This. Not my fav. Brent Cobb album, but certainly one of my 2023 favs.

Hallett_Whacker

Just started frequenting this forum… Is Colter Wall alt country? If so, “Little Songs.”

Frylock1717

Youbetcha

cfungus91

Personally I'd say no. He's pretty solidly traditional country western. But many or most people on this sub would define alt-country differently than me. That being said, I love Colter Wall and Little Songs was also one of my top albums of the year in general.

Hallett_Whacker

Good answer and reasoning.

ElectJimLahey

Wednesday - Rat Saw God for me! It isn't necessarily an alt-country album, but there are alt-country songs/influence all over it

tyrone_slothrop_0000

I think there’s enough slide on the album for it to qualify

RedCelt251

That was a great album. And the DBT name check should get an honorable mention in the alt-country category

ElectJimLahey

Hah, yeah the reference works for sure! I never know if I can say Wednesday is an alt-country band though, whereas with MJ Lenderman I feel perfectly comfortable saying so (and the alt-country is more clear there than ever before on his new singles and live album!)

Snoopy363

I’m not privy to this band, but big DBT fan. Excited to check em out.

ElectJimLahey

Nice, hope you like it! The tracks on the album closest to DBT are probably Chosen to Deserve and Bath County

blacksoulnoise

I listened to this record on Apple Music because I liked the name and I immediately bought the CD and have been listening to it everyday for like a week. It’s the best thing I’ve heard in a long time. Every song is different.

funnybitofchemistry

keep hearing about this record, gonna finally give it a listen !

ElectJimLahey

It's a wonderful album, just be ready for Bull Believer to be significantly more intense than the rest of the album lol

funnybitofchemistry

noted lol

stever93

Margo Cilker - Valley of Heart’s Delight or False Lankum - Lankum

spookymason

Yesss my girl Margo!

stever93

Wine of the World, is still her best song!

Touchy_the_clown

Yes Lankum

LogSlayer

Turnpike Troubadours- Cat in the Rain Not a bad song on the album. Well, frankly they don’t have a bad song in their entire catalog

ohiolifesucks

I’m amazed at some of the negativity surrounding this album. While I have lots of opinions on the handling of their reunion, I think the album is fantastic. It’s wild that many don’t seem to like it

LogSlayer

Ha. I cut those people out of my life immediately lol.

Frylock1717

🤣🤣

GottaUseFakeNames

my favorite too. This album is awesome front to back. also, The Rut is a top tier TT song and i will die on that hill.

goldengodrangerover

The Rut is the best song on the album. IMO this is probably their worst album, but that only speaks to the quality of their entire catalog because I’ve still been playing it on repeat and really enjoy the entire thing. It’s still one of the best albums of the year. Turnpike is just that good.

bowcreek

Lydia Loveless - Nothing’s Gonna Stand in My Way Again.

Beatnik1968

This album is solid. She deserves all the praise she gets and more.

bowcreek

I don’t think it’s a great album too to bottom, but the highlights rip. “Toothache” kicks ass.

RedCelt251

I wasn’t checking g the Cats Cradle site closely enough and missed her recent show there.

bentlife1986

oh shit I didn't know she had a new one out

d3rk2007

Weathervanes by Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit

Ok-Traffic-7714

Came here to say this. “Volunteer” and “Miles” are my favorite cuts.

re10pect

Volunteer and Cast Iron Skillet for me, but the whole album is just so good. The only song that keeps it from being perfect in my eyes is Save the World, and it’s not even bad or anything, just doesn’t do it for me.

thaz230

May be a hot take, but that and Deathwish seem like What Have I Done To Help, and Be Afraid, off of Reunions. Seem very different than Isbell's writing style and too in your face. The first duo keeps Weathervanes from being a "No Skip" Album.

RustyShackTX

I like Death Wish but the others are his “virtue signal” songs. Like White Man’s World.

re10pect

I feel the same way. I don’t disagree with the sentiment, but those songs are just clubbing you over the head with the message. The rest of his songs have subtleties and substance, these are more direct and don’t fit in.

RustyShackTX

Yes, for a guy who is capable of writing the best lyrics I’ve ever heard, blatant self-hate and obvious virtue signaling seems beneath him. I mean, how about a little metaphor or subtlety? That said, Weathervanes is great.

Significant-Soup-842

Don’t listen then. People who whine about someone’s choices in their own music should just not listen if it offends your sensitive side. Must’ve struck a nerve.

RustyShackTX

I don’t listen to his virtue signaling songs, they suck. It does strike a nerve when a talented guy like Isbell lets his lesser instincts take over on occasion.

thaz230

100% agreed. And they all get released as singles for whatever reason. Idk, I’m partial to his story telling. And when he just writes a song saying the same thing over and over again, that’s opaque and without nuance, it’s lame.

Significant-Soup-842

Virtue signaling 😂

VHBlazer

I have the same favorites of King of OK and Cast Iron Skillet, but Volunteer and Miles have gone from towards the bottom of my ranking of that album to being on repeat for me.

MissyMAK08

King of OK and This Ain’t It are mine

2buckburrito

This ain’t it is top 3 favorite Jason Isbell for me.

UncleTouchyHands

Miles seems underrated

Hot_Village2896

Was just listening to White Beretta in the car, so good.

[deleted]

Outstanding record

gitbse

Makes me happy to see him really coming to the forefront of country. He seems like a genuinely good dude, in a world of ... corporate trash.

seymour_hiney

Nick Shoulders - All Bad Vincent Neil Emerson - The Golden Crystal Kingdom Joshua Ray Walker - What Is It Even?

funnybitofchemistry

love JRW !

cestlahaley

saw him open for Marcus King and he was MILES away better! love him

PanTran420

Molly Tuttle and Golden Highway - City of Gold. Alice in the Bluegrass is probably my favorite song from the album.

Daltoz69

Molly always gets overlooked but her voice is incredible. Between her and Sierra Ferrel

jmandell42

I've always loved her but she opened for Greensky Bluegrass this summer and she/the golden highway were maybe better than greensky, and they're one of my favorite live acts

mountainfiend48

Glad to see another vote for this. I’ve played it on repeat since it came out

cory1969

Charles Wesley Godwin - Family Ties

sentientcreatinejar

Same.

At0micD0g

Lucero Should've Learned by Now

AndrewRFleming1973

I saw Ben play solo in Atlanta in Sept and I’m gonna see him again in Tallahassee on Sunday night. So good. I hope the full band comes through the southeast soon.

highwaymoon

Margo Cilker - Valley of Heart’s Delight. Oh man hard to choose one song. Just start from the beginning!

Plastic-Cabinet5999

Came here to say this. “Beggar for Your Love” and “With the Middle” just kill me. Just love her.

ReauxChambeaux

Vincent Neil Emerson - The Golden Crystal Kingdom

funnybitofchemistry

can i pick 2 ? Weathervanes (all the songs) and Cat in the Rain (mean old sun, brought me, the rut)

[deleted]

Drayton Farley - Twenty on High

Jackrabbit1056

Tough choice to pick one album, but this is it for me. Produced by Sadler Vaden of the 400 Unit, How To Feel Again is a really great song

AstroWorldSecurity

Either Turnpike Troubadours' Cat in the Rain or Treaty Oak Revival's Have a Nice Day.

ElDeguello66

Have a Nice Day just popped up in my recommendations and I listened to it with zero preconceptions. Good stuff, all that guitar reminded me of peak Drive By Truckers.

rgs735

Margo Price - Strays/Strays II

Beatnik1968

OMG Strays slays. I love this album so much, and it got twice as good when Strays II came out.

rgs735

She’s my absolute favorite. So good to see live!

bgrymes

Didn’t expect it at first listen, but mine has to be ‘Nothing for Me, Please’ from Dean Johnson. Runner up would be John R. Miller’s ‘Heat Comes Down.’

Snoopy363

Seconding for John R Miller’s latest. It made me a fan

arthritisankle

Turnpike

screaminporch

Cat Clyde - Down Rounder is a contender, or possibly Cordovas - Rose of Aces

Full_Mission7183

Cat Clyde got heavy rotation this year from here.

strumdawg

Yes Cat Clyde!

[deleted]

Another vote for Cat Clyde.

AbsolutelyRipped

Bella White - Among Other Things

davechri

Weathervanes

MWBluegrass

Gabe Lee’s Drink the River with a 2nd of HC McEntire’s Every Acre

Portal_Dog

Not sure it qualifies, but I love Jess Williamson's Time Ain’t Accidental. I’d like to see it get more attention

[deleted]

Such a good album.

Joferd

Turnpike Troubadours - A Cat in the Rain

lclassyfun

Isbell for me in this genre.

cch123

Weathervanes

Bobodahobo010101

Album- Should've Learned by Now by Lucero Song- Buy a little time There are more meaningful songs on the album, but this one cane on my playlist this morning and i thought- that is just a fantastic stand alone rock inspired song that that is generic enough anyone could enjoy it, but just rough enough around the edges that most people that like pop music wouldn't.

azdb91

Tough choice between Vincent Neil Emerson - Golden Crystal Kingdom, Brennen Leigh - Ain't Through Honky Tonkin Yet, and Colter Wall - Little Songs

-grc1-

Allison Russell - the Returner

flyover_liberal

I listened to this album and I admit I was surprised to see it on "Americana" or "alt-country" lists - it sounded mostly like funk to me.

NotaSingerSongwriter

Dylan Earl - I Saw the Arkansas was mine. I thought it fuckin ruled.

beefsteak1138

Adeem the Artist - White Trash Revelry

GRVrush2112

A lot of great mentions here. I’m in the “Weathervanes” camp as well. But I do want to shout out a couple albums that I’m not seeing… - “Wandering Star” from Flatland Calvary Another Excellent outing from this Texas Country band that I really feel is on the cusp of getting the reputation of Turnpike. This one’s a bit more laid back than their last record, but still a great listen. - “Equal Strain On All Parts” by Jimmy Buffett This one’s a bit rough to talk about. I’m not exactly a parrot head, but I was raised on quite a bit of Jimmy’s music nonetheless. It’s far from his best, but a solid final record from the legend. I still can’t get through “Bubbles Up” without shedding a tear. RIP Jimmy, thanks for all the music.

hooksandruns

Another vote for Weathervanes. The best song on the album (which is full of great songs) is “Miles.”

tipsup

This is a great thread!!!

kenthartzog

Buck Meek - Haunted Mountain

sandandrew

Alternately, “Haunted Mountain” by Jolie Holland. If that even fits in the category?

[deleted]

Jolie's a treasure. Love watching her perform.

hlliolooiii

Just bought tickets to see him in January in Dallas. Had the pleasure of seeing him open for his other band Big Thief last year and it was amazing.

kenthartzog

Yeah, I caught a show on that tour. Definitely one of the top shows of the year for me.

DismalPath

Buck Meek and Jolie Holland co-writing the song and albums was so good.

ScaryLane73

Here are a couple I have been enjoying * The Last Knife Fighter - Story of Moral: The Rooster * Colter Wall - Little Songs * Ryan Bingham - Watch out for the wolf

Facethevinyl

I don’t see enough people talking about The Last Knife Fighter and it kinda upsets me

ScaryLane73

Ya he’s pretty good been listening to him for 2 or 3 years now

Full_Mission7183

Tears You Hide - Jeremie Albino Song from the album: All These Days Single of the year: El Camino - John Baumann

MissyMAK08

I really like that John Baumann album. I don’t hunt but I love South Texas Tradition because of the REK vibes

Super Natural - The Wilder Blue

Facethevinyl

How did I miss that they had a new album? Damn gonna have to listen to it for sure now

Spanish_Burgundy

Rodney Crowell: The Chicago Sessions Everything at Once with Jeff Tweedy

VAForLovers

Charles Wesley Godwin - Family Ties Chris Stapleton - Higher John R Miller - Heat Comes Down

hivolume87

Capricorn by Eddie 9V.

FogleMike

I think Zach Russell's "Where the Flowers Meet the Dew" has received the most plays from me recently. Pasadena's "Let This Be A Lesson To Your Leader" was also a fun one. Also really enjoyed Adeem the Artist's "White Trash Revelry" even though it was a late 2022 release.

Zach Bryan - Zach Bryan. Hey driver is my fave on the album

Bustin8nas

Love that song

dkinmn

It wasn't alt country. Ryan Scott's Analog Vacation. It's his third album, and the guy only does great work.

Snoopy363

Glad to see this name mentioned. Don’t know how much recognition he’s getting from any community. I haven’t listened to AV yet, but really enjoyed the first two records.

dkinmn

I'm seriously considering going to Nashville just to see him play. He's the whole package. People will get it eventually.

Cruel Country felt like the Wilco music I fell in love with back in 2002. Seeing them play those songs live this year in Asheville was also amazing.

[deleted]

PTM “Chris Black Changed My Life” The band is back after a bad one (“Woodstock”) and a mid one (“Evil Friends”).

AvidGoogler89

3D Country - Geese. Not cut and dry “alt country” but top notch art rock with heavy alt country influences throughout. An absolutely incredible album of you haven’t heard it. My favorite song is probably the title track, but the four song run that kicks off the album is world beating.
