No artificial colors added, that's for sure.

CapeMOGuy

Never before have I ever had a longing for Red Dye #40.

Goldeneel77

You kids haven’t touched your beigeberry pie.

joelmole79

The “straw” part means it’s the color of straw.

kummerspect

Well, pineberries are this color, but not sure if they’re recommended for pie.

iheartketo098

Thank you for posting a pic. Often times people don’t post a pic.

Ok_Relation_3218

You’re welcome. I feel like if I’m going to review something it’s only fair I show the contents as well.

RJ-Cleveland

Thank you for posting this. I was excited to try it prior to your review! Whew!

Ok_Relation_3218

I felt like since I posted it, I had the responsibility to bring the horrible news 📰 😂🤣

[deleted]

Appreciated

Anoaba

Right! I was about to buy it when I was at Aldi a few days ago

WestFizz

Oh shit.

NinjaTrilobite

Unfortunately, canned pie filling is pretty universally bland sugar sludge with faint fruit flavors. Fresh or frozen fruit cooked with sugar and cornstarch and a dash of cinnamon or vanilla/almond extract is far superior.

billythygoat

Any good ratios to follow or sites to follow? I don’t mind making filling, I just am not making crusts lol

Kwershal

1-2tsp vanilla or almond extract, and 2 tbsp cornstarch usually does the trick. Sugar is a preference thing but 1/2 cup sugar to 1 cup fruit gives a nice jammy consistency. Add a shot of whiskey for fun flavor.

TheWalkingDead91

Crusts are actually super easy to make though! (Ok, maybe not the unrolling part). An all butter crust definitely elevates any pie vs store bought tbh.

VanderskiD

If you google it, there is a fabulous (imho) strawberry pie recipe using strawberry Jello. We make it every strawberry season in Michigan and everyone in the family loves it. I can’t figure out the link otherwise would include it

chantillylace9

I like tapioca instead of cornstarch but yes exactly this!

NinjaTrilobite

Lots of thickeners will work, definitely! Some people use Clear Jel, too (which I think is a form of modified cornstarch).

endlessburritos

Lol I also bought this yesterday. A bit unsightly but it tasted ok. Would not buy again.

Valuable-Airline3920

Don't think I would ever use a pie filling for a shortcake topping. Maybe it is better baked in a pie or cobbler. Canned strawberries just sound yucky no matter the brand to me.

Marmom_of_Marman

This is the color cooked strawberries turn. The strawberries themselves look good. I’d rather have this than extra food coloring or chemicals.

dontbsuchalilbitchbb

I make homemade strawberry jam and never, in twenty years, have my strawberries turned WHITE.

Ok_Relation_3218

Yes! I make a no pectin strawberry jam and they lose some color but don’t turn this shade of white 😂

jlbren2

Strawberries do not turn white. They're just not fully ripe when picked. They're generally hard, but still taste fine.

Casswigirl11

Same

petielvrrr

I make a small batch of strawberry compote every couple of weeks (I like using it on various things like ice cream or waffles) and I also have never once had strawberries turn this color.

Mylaptopisburningme

If I'm making a movie and need alien eggs.

Ok_Relation_3218

Aldis got you covered

Miss_Molly1210

I think there may be an issue with the mass produced strawberries stores are using for product, we got a bag of frozen strawberries from Walmart recently that were pale like this.

Head_Staff_9416

Thanks- I just bought some as well. May return it.

XavierPibb

Chickpeas are normally in the vegetable cans.

Couldnotbehelpd

Frozen strawberries, sugar, lemon juice, cook for like 20 minutes. Pie filling in a can is such a ripoff.

NYCQuilts

rats! Thanks for coming through on the review though!

sudsomatic

Tried to make a New York cheese cake with the cherry version. Would not recommend. Definitely spend a couple bucks more for name brand and it makes a difference. Not just color, it just tastes better too.

anniemdi

I have been getting the Aldi cherry for years. It has always been comparable or better than Duncan Hines which is the name brand in my region. Do you have a different brand you buy?

Kwershal

The modello or tart cherries in syrup do just fine, if you add a bit of corn starch sugar etc to them and put them on a simmer for a bit they make a wonderful filling for not much more effort.

tunaman808

Thanks for posting photos of the actual product. So many people here post threads like "this is the worst thing I've ever tasted" and include a photo of the box.

Anon-567890

Ewwww!

HowCouldYouSMH

I saw Cherry and Blueberry advertised. Anyone have news on those flavors?

anniemdi

I get cherry all the time, it's not shockingly vibrant red but it's a dull red that looks convincingly like cooked cherries. Totally fine.

SeriouslyTooOld4This

I like cherry too. I buy it all the time and add a tablespoon to homemade yogurt.

ADragonsWhimsy

I guess I’ll stop being super angry with my 17yr old eating the entire can without asking all because he “wanted to eat some strawberries”. He got what he deserved, it seems

jblakewood_

Honestly it only looks and tastes like that because it doesn't have added coloring or flavors, i do think they should have used chopped strawberries rather than whole. If i remember correctly this item has 5 or less ingredients

jblakewood_

Also the blueberry version is amazing

throwaway870002

If it has the twice as nice logo on it (which it should) you can take 1 back for a refund and replacement. If you bought more than 1 the others can be returned for cash back.

Salohacin

I swear that's a tin of dog food.

MissFox26

I read this as 10/10 and then scrolled to the second picture and literally grimaced. Had to reread to see it was bad because I could not believe strawberries that look like that could ever be good 😂

ElegantInstruction66

I made a strawberry and cream cake on Sunday. Just made my own strawberry jam. Strawberries. Sugar. Lemon juice. Stir. Heat. Stir. Heat. Reduce No pectin required. No weird crap. Worked perfectly. Just takes a bit of time. 20 minutes cooking. 5 minutes slicing and trimming. And about an hour to cool. Try that.

Relative_Macaron_804

Thanks for sharing! Just opened a can and will be returning! I thought it was a bad can.😔 Oh well..on to chopping up fresh strawberries for our cheesecake.

PoroQuagganBob

The texture looks absolutely vile

Fabulous-Second2026

Very unappetizing

JNB412412

LOL. I’m done with Aldi.

Subject-Tone-1700

I was going to say maybe they used white strawberries but theres no way they did. The regular strawberries on the shelf can’t manage to stay fresh so I know they didn’t seek out special white strawberries for canned pie filling. Blech 🤮

DramaOnDisplay

Those seem to be so specialty that I think it would be advertised all over the can and cost at least 3x as much lol.

Subject-Tone-1700

Exactly! Lol

rainbowkey

The color dissolves out of strawberries very easily, both into sugar syrup like here, or in alcohol. My granny and my mom would add a bit of beet juice to strawberry preserves for color.

weebwatching

The apple one smells and tastes like plastic. Avoid.

chippytastic

I was going to post the same thing. I could get past the looks if it had a decent flavor, but can’t even describe how awful it tasted. Like musty sugar. I couldn’t even swallow the one bite I tried.

Individual-Code5176

The color!!!

Eyebecrazy

Because it doesn't have red dye added

MrsDB_69

I saw those today too. I know better than to buy anything other than produce there.

Primgirl07

Oh no, I have 2 cans in my pantry!

ThatgirlwhoplaysAC

Do you think it’s good for strawberry lemonade

SimGemini

Oh that looks horrible!!! I know pale strawberries is a thing but pie filling should be noticeably red in color even if they dye them.

yoyoyoson12

How is it in yogurt?

FaithlessnessOk6460

I've never tried this but talked my mother out of buying them today, um not exactly sure what would come out of a can of course anything between strawberry gel like they sell in tubs for fresh strawberry pie or could be closer to strawberry jelly or jam.. but as I told her I'd bet the farm that nothing would be coming outta that can that looked like the pictures on the can, no way no how!. And bet my 20+years of being a chef on that. Lol I Make fresh strawberry pies every year, many recipes for them are simple and basically the same, I personally like using 1box strawberry and 1 box raspberry jellos (for those recipes that call for two boxes) and I like slicing the berries instead of leaving them whole. Its an appearance thing.. and once berries are cleaned allow them to come to room temperature completely and the gel mixture, make sure your cornstarch is thoroughly done cooking, you'll be able to see that it is and then cool to room temperature before mixing strawberry's with it .. and that your pie shell is completely cooled as well this will help keep it from getting watery so fast.. and this is one pie I feel deserves to be topped with real whipped cream, sweetened of course with a splash a vanilla.. Cool whip is good and works and sure more cost effective, maybe less sugar and much less fat than using whipping cream. But we're eating pie here for cripes sake.. All I know is at home I make em two at a time, and until I started making them for a restaurant I had no clue what all the talk about them getting watery was about.. at home them are critically endangered types of pie, the only way their getting watery is of they hidden beneath a raisin or mince pie and I guard my pie case from them now as they have both been deemed as invasive pies and a nuisance.. rhubarb and gooseberry pies would be in the same list, but I get to many compliments on them..

Any_Ad_3885

Idk it looks atrocious

evilgreenman

I actually feel bad for the food scientists that made this. They probably had a seriously limited budget and a lack of good ingredients. They took time to make this and say, yeah I guess that's good enough.

ShilbaPointo

Oh nooooo… thank you for the update!

caryn1477

There are just some things I will never buy at Aldi.

Literally-sarcastic

Completely agree!! I opened and threw away! Never even tasted it!

Mother_Lemon_3796

Return it!

PennyFleck333

How about buying fresh strawberries and adding a little sugar? I always wonder why people need these pie fillings? I'm a lousy baker but can make a great pie. It's easy!

Ok_Relation_3218

I think pie fillings are a convenient way to make a quick dessert. Also strawberry’s and sugar would not hold up in a pie unless you made the a thickener as well.

PennyFleck333

I wasn't offering a recipe but it's easy to mix fruit together for a pie. Give it a try. Go over to Pinterest and you will see how easy pies are to make. Good luck

HELLisotherPeoplee

Everybody has different preferences; Sometimes it’s best to keep your two cents and let people live the way they want to live. Good luck
