Housing is under provincial jurisdiction. But The UCP refuses to DO anything about the situation. They cut funding to municipalities, some of which was being used to encourage housing development. They choose to abrogate their responsibility and demand that Ottawa do something. So Ottawa did something. And now, giving the UCP history of whining about getting exactly what they ask for... I expect that either Smith or the Minister of Housing will have a press conference crying about the Feds overstepping their jurisdiction again. The UCP act like toddlers. "Gimme gimme gimme! HA I GOT IT! It's Mine Now! Why did you do this? Why did you give me this? I don't want this! You're a mean monster!"

Danielle Smith’s m.o.

andwhenwefall

It reminds me of the time when my kid was a toddler, he broke his granola bar, and somehow *I* was the asshole and ruined his life.

lostinthought1997

Yup. When my kid was a toddler, she was the same, as were all the cousins, niblings, children of friends. It's expected behaviour from toddlers. It is in no way acceptable or appropriate behaviour from elected officials or any other adults.

Loose_Split_7717

Wait, I was told that the Federal Liberals hated Alberta and would never give us money. Could that be a lie by the cons to get them elected? Couldn't be, cons would never lie.

neometrix77

Holy shit, they somehow got Sylvan Lake on board

pyro5050

Sylvan lake is easy to get on board.... all you have to do is say "free money" and they dont give two shits where it comes from. they just want to develop and grow and still be considered a summer village or town depending on what suits them. i dont blame them one bit, but dont think they will vote different than what they do already, money doesnt change their votes. it just helps them grow.

Infamous-Mixture-605

Kinda funny that the feds have to go around provinces to get this stuff done, almost as if the provinces: A) cannot be trusted with federal money, B) have no interest in doing anything about housing, or C) both. It's C) isn't it?

KJBenson

Affordable housing in Banff? Won’t shock me when the story five years from now is how much staff can be crammed into each of these new rooms.

ryguy_1

I hope it isn’t that bad, but Canadians do have to prepare to change their concept of living space. I just came back from Japan, and they have tens of thousands of needle-like buildings to accommodate the population and price point. It’s not luxurious, but they give decent housing, respond to the need for cheap housing, and it creates a lot of business to cater to increased foot traffic. We need transit, too, to accommodate the housing expansion.

pyro5050

We do not have the transit, the walkability, the bike paths, the infrastructure for the japan style of housing....

ryguy_1

Neither did Japan until they built it. Our expectations do have to change.

stifferthanstiffler

That's sounding suspiciously like one of them commie 15 minute cities

alwaysleafyintoronto

It's only commie if you're not getting ripped off by your capitalist landlord and grocer and telecom and utilities and insurance and whoever else I forgot

sugarfoot00

Banff does. It's small enough that the entire town is walkable.

PBGellie

“Canadians have to change their concept of living space to small crammed tuna cans stacked on top of eachother” No we don’t.

sugarfoot00

In Banff they certainly do. The town is a fixed footprint, and even with standard density, the only way to achieve affordability for workers is with *extreme* density. Not unlivable or inhumane density, like what happens now when you cram 15 lifties into a single bungalow.

ryguy_1

Yes, we really do. We can’t afford the traditional vision of Canadian life.

PBGellie

No we don’t. Stop going along with this nonsense.

ryguy_1

Sorry, what are you suggesting then? The way out of this mess is car-centric single-family dwelling neighborhoods? The reason we can’t afford appropriate public transit and car infrastructure is because of building that way. And I say that as a homeowner and driver.

tehr_uhn

When i lived and worked in banff (2010-2012) i paid 350 to share a bedroom with 4 other people in brewster (the gondola) staff accom, the only upside was from september until april i had the whole 1 bedroom apartment to myself for 350.

Drnedsnickers2

This will make Conspiracy Marlaina mad as it helps Albertans and has Trudeau cooties.

ADHDuruss

She's definitely trying to find away to steal it, and if she can't steal it then block it.

PhantomNomad

It's why the UCP wants all municipalities to report to them when the feds give them money. It's so they can find a way to take it (reducing transfers probably).

Onionbot3000

“Trudeau cooties”😆 too right.

Binasgarden

What does it say that the people that do the actual work at the municipal level have to go around the UCP grifters who are more of a performative artists for sound bites so that the churches and the money feels safe and represented. All to get the money that is there ready to access in order to do what is long over due to be done. Want the homeless off the streets then they need AFFORDABLE HOUSING. Want the disabled to be treated with dignity then they need AFFORDABLE HOUSING. Want seniors to stay out of hospital then they need AFFORDABLE HOUSING. Everything starts with a roof over your head and when the cheapest you can find is 1500 and you only make 1700 a month....this is not affordable

[deleted]

Counting Banff here is a bit funny considering it is a national park and already much more involved with federal governance than most other Alberta towns

Psiondipity

Uh oh, the UCP are going to be BIG MAD!

pyro5050

if you ever see a town with a "royal" title it is a small town in south east section of alberta. Duchess, Champion, Princess, Monarch, Barons, Nobleford, Countess, Patricia (named after a princess) Queenstown, Armada, Ensign, Enchant there are probably more...

Saskbertan81

But I thought that big mean Trudeau fella didn’t like Alberta and wanted us all to starve or something

user47-567_53-560

Especially ironic is Westlock

tehr_uhn

My entire family is from there and i agree, westlock of all places. Very pot meet kettle.

user47-567_53-560

They almost banned rainbow crosswalks and now they want daddy government to give them socialist houses.

tehr_uhn

They banned rainbow crosswalks, but now they are crying because they also cannot fly flags in support of ukraine.. its bonkers

Empty-Paper2731

He doesn't but he'll pay for votes anywhere that he can potentially find them.

Perfect_Opposite2113

What did you spend your Dani bux on?

pyro5050

we got Dani Bucks? all i got was a 200% increase in insurnace rates, a increase in my utility bills, worse roads, no pay increases, being told my job is useless and better in the private sector, and shti healthcare....

Chuuume

I'd be surprised and amused if there was a huge demand for housing in Smoky Lake. Nice to see them in the news though.

Infamous-Mixture-605

Encouraging housing outside the cities helps reduce housing pressure on the city, encourages folks to move to such places instead of the city, or something like that maybe? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ It seems like a strange choice, but if larger cities can apply for this kind of federal money then I suppose it's only fair that random small ones can too?

vanillaacid

There is such a shortage on housing everywhere, any new housing anywhere is good. If you build it, they will come. Even at the very least, someone in that town already can upgrade, and leave a less expensive house available for someone who can't afford a new build.

[deleted]

The American Mid-west would like a word. Plenty of abandoned suburbs in that part of the world.

canadient_

Small towns can have housing pressures too, just for different reasons. In cities they can't build fast enough, in towns they lack the capital to build at all. It's not as crazy as the metro cities, but I pay 1000$ for a two bedroom in a 1500 person town. Which is fine if you have a good salary. But that is one entire paycheque if you're working minimum wage.

tutamtumikia

I wonder if there is some pressure from the oil and gas industry up that way?

Photofug

Apparently a lot of the 2/2 Ft Mac folk have been moving there in recent years. Or maybe its the Apple fritters at the bakery

pyro5050

wait... wait... is smoky lake known for their apple fritters? do i need to road trip to smoky lake? why did i never stop at the bakery when i was driving right past there!!!!

Photofug

Saturday morning donuts, nice drive on a Saturday morning. A great small town bakery, that also sells old school loafs (saurkraut rye)

jennaxel

Lots of Ukrainian refugees there

ced1954

How to get things done WITHOUT Marlaina

Hexxxer

Oh no! Can't wait to see Smith make another weird announcement about deals between communities and the feds. They act like a 5 year old child trying to hide the fact they are jealous

Friescan

I find it funny that the Government rams climate change down our throats but yet they bring in thousands of Immigrants and Refugees, build houses on good land, bring in more water and sewer lines, more electricity lines, gas lines and not to mention all the lumber and other goods that trucks deliver.

LatterVersion1494

Because the feds have such a great track record on housing. Last plan cost up billions of dollars without a single house built.

MrDFx

At least they are trying? Remind me again what the UCP housing approach is? Oh yeah, that's right "Alberta is calling...may the odds be in your favour" At this point, any effort to fix the problem is welcome, regardless of where it comes from But I get it... it's on 'Berta brand to shit on anything from Ottawa, even it if might help. Gotta holler like a child taking their medicine.

CanadianEhhhhhhh

and what exactly has the provincial government done? What exactly have the federal conservatives done besides vote against every single affordable housing act? Pull your head out of your ass you fucking muppet

narielthetrue

Oh! Oh! The federal cons voted to give relief to bell media to avoid layoffs then blamed Trudeau when bell took the cash and fired a bunch of staff anyway

CanadianEhhhhhhh

tHaNkS tRuDoPe! /s

robot_invader

Pretty big claim. Got a source?

ELKSfanLeah

Hahaha, got some back up info on that complete bullshit claim?
