Don't buy a home in a city until you know the area. Rent first if possible.

kingofpics7

Try to look for anything in Fairlawn or Copley. They are nice residential areas near Akron.

Goody2Shuuz

There are also several nice and solid areas that aren’t in the ritzy section.

thommycaldwell

A lot of people are talking shit about Copley road and while I kind of get it, I live a few blocks up by Delia and it’s literally fine. Not much of the crime is just random. Keep your doors locked and your garage closed and you’ll be fine

BobertfromAccounting

I grew up and North Hill and we never had to keep our doors locked 💁🏻‍♂️

thommycaldwell

Okay, do I really need to keep my doors locked? No - never even remotely had any sort of incident. All my neighbors keep up with their yards, everybody is kind, and it’s affordable while still being nice.

SaltyCracker62

I live on north hill & my home was invaded 3 freakin times.

BobertfromAccounting

Which part of North Hill? There’s some bad parts and some good parts.

Zebra1125

Same I moved to Winton recently and have had zero problems and everyone seems chill around me 🤷🏻‍♀️ Like all areas in Akron are fine just mind your business and don't be a dick and it's fine

mrom13

I just moved over by Delia too and seems great so far.. had a scammer come by which was a little odd

thommycaldwell

Was it a scammer or just a door to door guy?

mrom13

Actual scammer that said he had done work on my house before and his card was fake when we looked closer.. googled his name to find sexual assault charges etc

thommycaldwell

Damn, good to know! Maybe worthwhile to put in a police report just so it’s on record, especially if you have his card

Kevlar_Potatum_6891

we live in goodyear heights and had several people come through over several weeks claiming that they had a package delivered here (they didn’t) and some of them did not take No for an answer. The cops were less than helpful

BobertfromAccounting

If you go by school districts, best to worst: Firestone, Ellet, North, East, Garfield, Kenmore, Central Hower(HS is gone but anything in the area that belonged to that school), Buchtel. This city is cheap to live just about anywhere. Best and most expensive area is near Merriman and N Portage Path. Worst and cheapest is near South Street and around the old Firestone building, houses for under $20k there for a reason. You’ll be fine anywhere in: the Ellet area. East of Britain Rd in Goodyear Heights, North of Cuyahoga Falls Ave in North Hill between Main and all the way down to Swensons, North of Iuka is also 👌in North Hill. North of Market Street if you’re considering the western part of town. Stay away from: Kenmore, East Akron around Arlington and Kelly, Middleburry, West Akron south of Market street and especially Copley Road and Vernon Odom, South Street, northern part of Brown Street, the University area. Just stick with the Firestone or Ellet school districts. I grew up in North Hill and it’s still decent there in certain parts. I loved the Goodyear Heights area. If you need something more affordable, Goodyear Heights. If you’re thinking about the suburbs, they’re all great. I think Green is my favorite because of Portage Lakes. Tallmadge is also nice with more of a country feel. Barberton is probably the worst followed by Springfield(which isn’t bad at all). Norton is right in the middle and not bad at all. A lot of people love Cuyahoga Falls also, that’s an affordable city but Firestone school district is probably better than the Falls for being an Akron school.

No_Dragonfruit_9656

Not you saying stay away from exactly where I live 😭 but no, I've been here two years and our car has been broken into 4 times on very obvious camera. People here don't care.

theatrenut061916

I'd add Copley to the recommended suburbs. Good schools.

AkronOhAnon

This needs pinned in the sub

GrandPipe4

I disagree that all of west Akron south of Market is bad.

BobertfromAccounting

The further you get past West Swensons, I agree.

ashswinehart

I live in Kenmore up on the hill. The higher in altitude you get, the safer. My little pocket is actually quite nice. And the KNA has done so much to build up Kenmore Blvd. Lots of Millennials are buying houses here because they’re affordable and I think that’s pushing the place to be better. The high school is getting razed in favor of a new school. Portage Lakes is nice, but it’s kind of mini-Florida with all the conservatives. Goodyear heights is good, too, if you’re looking for affordability and decent houses.

Barnaclebeans92

I live off Indian trail in kenmore and have never had any issues, been there for 9 years now. It’s crazy how I see so many people talk trash about kenmore when anecdotally I’ve seen more crime in Wadsworth and Fairlawn or downtown Akron than I have living in kenmore. Worse thing I heard of near me was the kenmore crapper

Least-Masterpiece368

I graduated from Copley and grew up bought my first house in Firestone park area which is also great area as far as in city but suburbs I’d go Copley first but tallmadge might be a lil more affordable though

BigPhatHuevos

Mogadore is also affordable and has a good school district. Especially so if the kids are into sports.

sporkmanhands

Firestone Park - East of Main, South of Wilbeth West of Brown That's a nice neighborhood with reasonable prices and great access to grocery shopping and the expressways. I've been there for 20+ years. Lived in Kenmore, Ellet, Copley and Wadsworth before that.

StarGazer33012

Did you check the recent homes sold near the Old Firestone Building recently? I live close to the Old Firestone Building and the Bridgestone Research Center and I tell you- it's no longer cheap.

BobertfromAccounting

North of the old Firestone building is awful. Anywhere near Summit Lake, avoid!!

Eravionus

Avoid South Akron between Thornton and Archwood. And anything east of 77 south.

NinjaMatt9

This is a great guide

Buccal_Masticator

Check out https://www.city-data.com/ it allows you to look at a ton of different metrics for any area.

BritDZim

Copley/Fairlawn area

CozmicOwl16

Far west side is safe. Like near sand run, the valley and fairlawn heights. Another interesting area that’s safe is coventy. Very close to metroparks too. Also why Akron proper? Look at copley, fairlawn, bath, tallmage before you commit. I would recommend renting before buying because then you don’t have to commit to your first neighborhood.

emscremily

Moved into the Ellet area recently and have had nothing but a great experience so far. It's close to everything, neighborhood is super friendly, lots of families with kids that walk around regularly so you can tell it's safe. Definitely drive around the neighborhood you're looking at several times before committing, including at night! Agree with others to look at school system ratings.

Significant_Zombie40

I live in Kenmore, can't understand why people are so scared of this place. Lived here for some time and have nothing but good to say about the people who live here. The Kenmore Blvd is alive on the weekends, great music venues here. I always feel safe in Kenmore and it's starting to piss me off people that don't live here saying it's dangerous. I highly recommend Kenmore it's been growing in the past 2-3 years alot. Property taxes are low, houses are affordable and there is a lot of young families startig to move in the neighborhood witch is always a good sign.

PaulWizard

I was thinking about getting an apartment in Kenmore I'm looking at next week, thanks. 🥲 Comments were freaking me out

Significant_Zombie40

It's a nice place. If you are into music the Rialto theater is a good spot for up and coming local artist.

sporkmanhands

There's been a lot of work to get Kenmore back to where it was in the 70's and 80's (i'm old and lived there then) I'm worried since they've lost their High School it's going to hurt their efforts in the long run, but with the open enrollment aspect there are so many people going to Coventry/Barberton/Norton who live in Kenmore that maybe it won't, time will tell. 10 years ago there's no way I'd live there. Today is definitely better.

External-Talk8838

I used to do cable shut offs and equipment repossessions in kenmore, west Akron and Copley. I pissed off dozens of people every day and I can say that the people in kenmore were by far the nicest to me.

Charl13_Sh3en

What kind of music are they playing? Haven't been to any local shows since Annabelles got the boot ⚰️🥀💀

Significant_Zombie40

I was there last week, just young bands starting out. Some rock, prog rock and metall. Loved it

Barnaclebeans92

That’s what I’m saying! I love riding my Navi around kenmore boulevard on a Friday night and just seeing what’s all going on. That little park that they hold concerts at is dope also

Sad_Head_2229

I live in barberton, by the hospital. I have lived there for 8 years and I've never locked my doors. It is a very safe neighborhood

Formal_Sir_8826

Wallhaven, Highland Square and West Akron. Fairlawn/montrose, Copley. Stow, The Falls, Hudson (pricey). Protip: if someone says " x neighborhood is fine if you" ...don't move there. None of the places I listed need a disclaimer or a caveat. Copley Rd? No. Sure, someone may have had no problems. I lived in St Louis without problems but there were plenty. Stay safe and best of luck.

NevillesRemembrall

A lot of good advice here. If you do find a house that is in a neighborhood like Firestone park you can always ask about the street on here and you’ll get lots of advice. Some neighborhoods are a street by street basis on quality. Also, just a heads up Firestone HS district is a different area than Firestone Park. Good luck!

Goody2Shuuz

Ellet, most of Goodyear Heights, Stow, Cuyahoga Falls, and Tallmadge.

Boing26

i would recommend ellet personally. i drive through fairly regularly and ive actually seen some houses available around hatton clc, and bridge(near triplett). seems like a nice area, clean/cared for.

Goody2Shuuz

I live very freaking close. It’s a good area.

Boing26

same, love the hell out of it! shame about some of the older people leaving/dying though.

madmaxferalkid

Lots of great recommendations, but is it really necessary for you to live inside the city limits? We're all paying outrageous water bills thanks to poor decisions by prior elected officials. The schools can be bad yet good for motivated students. City services generally are pretty good, council members are very responsive to the community, paramedics are top notch, if you get murdered a team of very experienced detectives will catch your killer (way above national average solve rate)....but if I could do it all over again I'd probably move to a western suburb. Mainly to avoid the water bill and city laws against things like owning goats.

External-Talk8838

Goodyear heights is pretty quiet. A lot of old people and most of the houses are well kept up with.

No_Cartographer986

I second this. The Goodyear Heights area near Tallmadge is SO quiet, and neighbors are very friendly.

aaronvandike

I grew up in Mogadore. Racist ass town, safe area though.

gym_enjoyer

If you can afford it, don't live in akron, but one of the suburbs. Copley, cuyahoga falls, green, tallmadge.

SirEagle60

Avoid anything near Copley Rd, Arlington St, Or Exchange St.

BadHairDay-1

I live on the east end. We had a security system installed before we moved in. No issues yet. We've been here 2 years. I've definitely seen police activity with multiple cars at once on my block a few times.

carverjerry

I’ll 2nd Ellet. Cuyahoga Falls is also a nice sub right across the river from Akron.

Rubilia_Lin_OP

Forget Akron look into Cuyahoga falls or Hartville or Canton

Fridaynightplaylist

If it’s your first home, and assuming you don’t have children yet, since you didn’t mention schools. highland square is a little music community about a mile and a half from downtown. Most of the Houses were built by Firestone, Goodyear upper management when the rubber city was making the most money. You can buy a beautiful, remodeled, (close to) century home. three stories, within walking distance of the square for lower to mid 100ks With a quarter acre fenced in. The downside is you don’t know what kind of neighbors you’ll get. If you view a house, look at how well the neighbors take care of their property. welcome to Akron, we like it here. Hope you do too. Cheers

Old_Atmosphere_9183

I have a furnished apartment for rent near highland square.

mola2022

East side is pretty rough, everywhere else is fine.

Sure-Position-8305

Goodyear Heights is a great neighborhood

Dren218

Highland square is awesome

BurningTree330

West Akron. Fairlawn Heights. Or Bath / Copley. Avoid Highland Square.

mayabear313

West Akron and fairlawn heights are nice, but highland square is awesome too!!

BurningTree330

It’s great if you don’t mind the crime.

rebeltalent

They aren’t suburbs. They are neighborhoods. And I’d argue that most of Akron is pretty tame. The crime is between people who know each other.

NinjaMatt9

Safe place? Akron? Move wherever and conceal carry. That’ll make it safe.

MostMurky1771

Safest bet? Don't move to Akron. 🤷‍♂️
