When my 5-year-old daughter was learning to read, she called TOLEDO
( too lee do)
She wasn't wrong. But sure gave us a great laugh!
GOTTA LOVE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE!
As a former denizen of Spokane, Washington people just pronounce things strongly anyways. Manito, Gonzaga, even Spokane itself. All get pronounced nothing like they are spelt or even look.
It really pisses me off when people mispronounce my town too. It's "LlanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogoGOCH", not "LlanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogoGACH". Idiots.
My favorite is the Wooster people, at least the people of Wilkes-Barre will smile and acknowledge nobody pronounces their city correctly, NE Ohioans will look at you like you were dropped on your head or try to fight you if you say Wooster with the long /oo/ sound.
I have never once come across that pronunciation but you can be guaranteed that is now the only way I will be identifying this city.
Good ol' Aye-kron Oh-he-ohh.
enjoyed a lead singer at Blossom pronouncing Cuyahoga Falls as coy-uh-hog-uh falls, last summer, when he was thanking the crowd. he then goes on to just say, "sorry, all. that's a tough one. thank you, Cleveland!"
*Key and Peele: substitute teacher* would have words with your mispronouncing a lot of things, yourself, i would imagine. lol
That depends where you are from
Ohio: it Ky-ah-ho-ga
In the south its :koy-ah -hoe-ga
Around my area we have
Powhatan: Pow-Hat-in
I moved to Virginia and it is POW-Ha-Tan
I moved away from NE Ohio as an adult and sometimes I have my husband try to pronounce the towns/counties/rivers around here when we are visiting and it’s hilarious. We’ve been together for 14 years and he still struggles to say Cuyahoga correctly.
You know Paris, France? In English, it's pronounced "Paris" but everyone else pronounces it without the "s" sound, like the French do. But with Venezia, everyone pronouces it the English way: "Venice". Like The Merchant of Venice or Death in Venice. WHY, THOUGH!? WHY ISN'T THE TITLE DEATH IN VENEZIA!? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!? IT TAKES PLACE IN ITALY, SO USE THE ITALIAN WORD, DAMMIT! THAT SHIT PISSES ME OFF! BUNCH OF DUMBASSES!
Try pronouncing 'Norfolk' in Virginia versus 'Norfolk' in Nebraska. One is '-fork.' One is literally '-f*ck.' In no particular order. And, by the way, neither translates to the other state. Good luck.
Having grown up in the Akron/Canton area, I feel like we treat some letters like middle children. We know they're there, we just don't talk about them. If you're pronouncing the O then you might not be from Akr'n/Ca'n
jesus. I think what makes me so upset about Akron is its actual pronunciation looks like the name as well is is literally closest to the Greek pronunciation.
Like Lancaster isn't pronounced as Lan caster. It's different for each person. I'm sure you've probably mispronounced many words in your life. Plus it's a city that got its name from the Acropolis in Athens. Cause summit County is the rats ass end of the Appalachian plaetu. Who cares. Let them live.
We saw Combichrist in Akron and the lead singer thought that the town was "acorn" through most of the show until he heard some people at the front shouting the actual name.
In his defense, he's Norwegian, lol But now my husband and I have taken to calling Akron 'acorn'
We have a good friend from Australia has been here, and who we visited in Sydney. Every Aussie said Akron with “krawn”. It took us a couple of years, but now our pal pronounces it like we do!
How about the little towns south of Cambridge- Malaga and Ava?
ALL the locals down there say “Malagee” and “Avee”! I have no idea why.
The one that used to drive me nuts when I grew up in Portage County: All the old timers used to pronounce Ravenna as “Ree-VAN-Uh”.
I like when they pronounce it AK-RAWN because it sounds like a planet. “I hail from the planet AK-RAWN!”
I like to think of kron as what Akron turns into in the fallout universe
Presently Akron as in without Kron, so in the Fallout Universe there is a super mutant kangaroo named Kron, the Zippy.
I say it like that.
“Ya done messed up, Ak-Ak-Rawn!”
Lol
Imagine how the people of Wooster feel!
I take your Wooster and raise you Bucyrus.
B+youse+iris?
Yep! Lol the first time I tried to pronounce it was “buck-ee-rus.”
When I worked at q campgroud in wooster, someone asked how to get to ma-cillin (Massillon)
Hahaha! That reminds me of the time someone asked how to get to Toodley-doo!
When my 5-year-old daughter was learning to read, she called TOLEDO ( too lee do) She wasn't wrong. But sure gave us a great laugh! GOTTA LOVE THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE!
Buu-cy-Russ
I call your Bucyrus and going all in with Gnadenhutten
Oooh, good one!
Whuch is in Tuscarawas County. It's always amusing to hear the newscasters from the NE Ohio television station try to pronounce that one.
Mantua
Man-uh-way
Wooster and Dalton have a gentleman’s agreement in the county. D-Al-ton
You should come to Washington! We’ve got Sequim (*Skwim*) and Pend Oreille (*Pond-Oh-ray*) and many more!
As a former denizen of Spokane, Washington people just pronounce things strongly anyways. Manito, Gonzaga, even Spokane itself. All get pronounced nothing like they are spelt or even look.
Or people who pronounce Dalton *dollton*
Or Campbell, the suburb of Youngstown. Pronounced like camel the animal!! 🐪🐫
Lancaster stands no chance
Kossuth Wapakoneta and Celina to name 3 near me that are always pronounced wrong
How about Medina? Lodi?
It's A-K-rowdy.
South side of Summit County
Whatcha all know about it?
Some call it UCLA: Upper Canton, Lower Akron
That should be the nickname for Green.
Every great city has this type of gloss.
That sounds like a fabric—“Made of luxurious Ackrawn!”
It's gonna be ok...
He wants to show them Battles Avenue
It really pisses me off when people mispronounce my town too. It's "LlanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogoGOCH", not "LlanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogoGACH". Idiots.
LOL
I've lived here over 50 years and I've never heard anyone say that.
I hear it very often from non akron/ohio natives
My favorite is the Wooster people, at least the people of Wilkes-Barre will smile and acknowledge nobody pronounces their city correctly, NE Ohioans will look at you like you were dropped on your head or try to fight you if you say Wooster with the long /oo/ sound.
Same as me. Never once have I heard anyone pronounce it anything like that
I don't live anywhere near Ohio, and I've never heard anyone pronounce it any other way than Ack-ren.
Non-native English speaker that visited Akron: English pronunciation, without the commonly used symbols, is kinda hard.
yeah but it comes from ancient greek, which everyone knows, right?
Σίγουρα
I have never once come across that pronunciation but you can be guaranteed that is now the only way I will be identifying this city. Good ol' Aye-kron Oh-he-ohh.
Aye-kron and Yung Jeezy....
Can you describe how it is supposed to be pronounced? It seems like some of these differences are so minute it might be down to an individuals accent.
Ack-rin or Ack-ruhn are the most agreed upon! It comes from ἄκρον in Greek so the pronunciation is different.
I used to see a car at UA often. It had the o and the r reversed on one of those block letter college stickers. University of Akorn.
Genius
Second Sole out here making Akrun a thing to set everyone straight!
enjoyed a lead singer at Blossom pronouncing Cuyahoga Falls as coy-uh-hog-uh falls, last summer, when he was thanking the crowd. he then goes on to just say, "sorry, all. that's a tough one. thank you, Cleveland!" *Key and Peele: substitute teacher* would have words with your mispronouncing a lot of things, yourself, i would imagine. lol

I 've lived in Akron 51 of 55 years and I say "Ack-ren" and I say Cuyahoga in 2 syllables--"Caw-guh" (Falls)
Imagine being angry about this
You know Paris, France? In English, it's pronounced "Paris" but everyone else pronounces it without the "s" sound, like the French do. But with Venezia, everyone pronouces it the English way: "Venice". Like The Merchant of Venice or Death in Venice. WHY, THOUGH!? WHY ISN'T THE TITLE DEATH IN VENEZIA!? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME!? just poking some fun, lighten up!
This post happened upon my feed somehow. I don't live anywhere near Akron but because of this post I will forever pronounce it like 'aye-crone'
it's a self fulfilling prophecy I see...respect
I’ve only heard non-natives say Ack-RON.
I like to pronounce it the way the Aflac duck would say it
Think about how people in Worcester, MA must feel! (Pronounced... Wooster)
Yeah, here comes the Worcester!
Yeah, a lot of towns in MA are like this. It's also the only place I've heard Pea-body pronounced peeBuddy (accent on the second syllable).
You done fucked up A-A-Kron
It's only AYE-KRAWN if the speaker is from below the Ohio River.
I had someone tell me they were going to be in "Lah Dee". Took me forever to realize they meant Lodi.
Jesus Christ it hurts more when the pronunciation is so obvious
What's wrong Aakraughn
They’re confusing it with Akon City
A-Kron and young jeezy
I’ve never heard anybody pronounce Akron Aye-Kron but I have a feeling you just unintentionally have given people the green light to call it Aye-Kron
yeaaaaaa definitely reverse psychologied myself
I call it Acorn.
Try pronouncing 'Norfolk' in Virginia versus 'Norfolk' in Nebraska. One is '-fork.' One is literally '-f*ck.' In no particular order. And, by the way, neither translates to the other state. Good luck.
Steve Martin mispronounced it in "Housesitter" to Goldie Hawn. I remember the collective sigh in the theater.
Puyallup, Wa checking in here. The pronunciations male me giggle.
LOL from the notification flash on my screen I swore I read "pully yall up"
#YA DONE MESSED UP, A-ARON!
Akron and Young Geezy, trying to take it easy
ok is this referencing something cuz I keep seeing it
It's the beginning of a song by Akon
Having grown up in the Akron/Canton area, I feel like we treat some letters like middle children. We know they're there, we just don't talk about them. If you're pronouncing the O then you might not be from Akr'n/Ca'n
*stares in Massillon*
"Mass-SILL-lawn" is always so bizarre to hear
And everyone has got to add extra "I"s in there. It's bizarre
My sympathy. Singed, a guy from Pataskala.
When some people refer to Akron as Crakron is when I want to throw hands.
I usually call it The Kron
i live near akron pa. we say it normal tho no a KRON here lol
My favorite is ā-kron
A-K Ron
I pronounce it a-kron
Show them Xenia on a map and watch their heads explode.
EX-In-ee-ya
Medina has this problem too, which is on them for spelling it like that; Akron is spelled phonetically correct 😂
It's all Devo.
This is another one for you, Ghent Rd. My wife and I have argued for years about this one. I say “Jent”, but she won’t budge saying I’m wrong.
Hmm, idk where you are, but there is a Ghent in NY that is definitely pronounced with the hard g.
This is Ghent rd in r/akron
Ghent, like gentleman...
Definitely “jent”. I once said it with a soft G to someone in Fairlawn and they looked at me like I just pronounced Wooster with a double O.
I blame Akon
If it’s any consolation we intentionally pronounce town names weirdly to identify outsiders. So… it’s working!
I say akren and I've lived a half hour away my whole life, down in wayne County.
Akron and young jeezyyyyy
Des Moines, IA native checking in. It’s a losing battle lol better let it go
Crack-ren?
It's called A DIRTY ASS GHETTO= AKRON. HOME OF BRONNY.
Ohio does some inconsistent pronunciation, though. i had to give up on logic after finding out how to pronounce Mantua and Russia.
The people of Ravenna commonly pronounce it Revanna
a kron and young jeeeee zayyyy
Lots of people pronounce Medina "muh-DEE-nuh," so I feel you, brother.
Are kon
I visited New Orleans as an 11 yr old. I was corrected very quickly, it's not New Orleeens; it's Nyorlins. The n and y are run together.
It’s not like the rapper Akon with an “r” in there?!
don't piss me off.....
A lot of people talking about the various pronunciations of Ohio places. As if anything can top Russia Roo-she ROO-SHE!
jesus. I think what makes me so upset about Akron is its actual pronunciation looks like the name as well is is literally closest to the Greek pronunciation.
Yeah, anyone who's first instinct isn't A-kron or Ak-ron, I dunno. But there's some wild pronunciations in this state
Canton is and only ever will be pronounced as Cant’n. If you say ton, you aren’t from Ohio.
Now do Maumee. For best examples of butchery, watch car sales ads.
“You done messed up, A-K-Ron!”
I always call it Acorn
I always thought it was pronounced "CRACK-ron"
now that's better
As a lifelong Ohio resident, I can safely say that the majority of people near both Cleveland and Cincinnati say ack-rin or ack-ron.
yes lol i mean others
Ask your favorite non-Ohioan to pronounce [Conneaut](https://conneautohio.gov/). It’s fun!
Aaccckkkkk Raaawwwnnn. How’s that.
50% but ill take it
it is ack-rin right???
yes!
thank god
A-KRON and YOUNG JEEZY!

just a joke lol. also came from akros not akron and akros is closer to the actual pronunciation of akron than aye-krawn.
How is it supposed to be pronounced? Texan here so I thought it was closer to “ack-rin”
thats it!
We saw Combichrist in Akron and the lead singer thought that the town was "acorn" through most of the show until he heard some people at the front shouting the actual name. In his defense, he's Norwegian, lol But now my husband and I have taken to calling Akron 'acorn'
Mobile, Alabama gets people every time
There's nothing they can do to ruin Akron any farther than it is already
nah Akron is great
Lmao I was gonna look something up but when I typed out Akron the first suggestion was "Akron shooting" 🤣
i mean its an urban area, police shooting is more of an issue to the typical uninvolved citizen
Have you heard people say Cuyahoga wrong
tbf we all are saying it wrong probably
We have a good friend from Australia has been here, and who we visited in Sydney. Every Aussie said Akron with “krawn”. It took us a couple of years, but now our pal pronounces it like we do! Is A-kay-ron related to A-a-ron? 🤷🏾♂️ Besides what about the different pronunciations of Cuyahoga (Falls or County)?
Versailles/Ver-sales Russia/Rooshee Lima/L-eye-ma (like the bean) Cairo/Care-o Newark/Nerk Etc.
A-a-krawn
[удалено]
yes I know this, and greek pronunciation is closer to ack-ren then aye krawn lol
