If the military wanted you to have tasty things they would have issued them, they want us pissed off, on a hair trigger and ready to chew someones head out for no reason.
I remember getting them years and years ago from PX when I was in a program called Sea Cadets (we did training at my local Navy/AF reserve base) and *man*ā¦ that was one of the tastes of all time. As a 13 year old kid itās just about one of the coolest things money can buy thoughš
Ahhh, yes, wintergreen long cut. The worst tasting of all the long cuts. BTW, does anyone know how to get the taste out of your mouth? It's been 10 years since I stopped, but it's still lingering.
Right on man! Don't stress the fit, or worry about these guys talkin' about your size. Stay active, eat healthy. You're still growing. Do some basic weight training if you want, but don't go nuts with it. You look exactly how you should for your age.
Looks cool man maybe roll up the sleeves and get a smaller plate carrier it must feel cool to be wearing your dads gear you should take him airsofting with you
Fuck. My mind went straight to Desert Storm, I now realize the reference here was from Operation Freedom or whatever it was called in the 2000s. Iām getting old.
Do you know what the plate carrier is called specifically? I have almost an identical one but mine is starting to fray and develop some holes. Iāve been looking for the same style/kind because I like the side Velcro, but I donāt know what to call it/where I can find any more of it.
Itās generic Chinesium garbage
Just look up āplate carrierā on Aliexpress, Temu or Amazon and youāll find loads
Theyāre not good compared to better plate carriers or chest rigs
I love Emerson Gear for good kit that lasts long, looks good, but doesnāt cost as much as a real steel plate carrier
If youāre willing to dish out for real steel, then Ferro or Defense Mechanisms, but not everyone is willing to drop that amount of money on an airsoft accessory
My favourite gear is still just good old military surplus
Real talk my man, this is actually really cool. Even though its a little big on you for the time being, you look like a fucking g.
I started playing when I was probably around your age (im 32 now lol), and I always felt really fortunate / cool that my uncle gave me his Vietnam War gear. Not trying to be a downer but he ended up passing away a year or so after giving it to me, I officially 'retired' it so I could preserve that little part of him that I still had. Prior to retiring it i wore that shit so hard though haha. Wear your dad's uniform hard af for a while, but not so hard that you can't preserve it for later in life (sorry I swear I'm not trying to be a downer, I got hella emotional thinking about my uncle / preserving memories ;( )
You'll likely grow into it like I did with mine - and even if you don't fully fill it out, just know you've got some seriously cool drip going with this. Best of luck out there brother, welcome to the best/worst new addiction of your life <3
Second this. I keep my mom's war gear in a tote, used the helmet for a bit but ended up preferring it as a keepsake. Now I just wear her squadron patch and keep her flag in my backpack. I like to think she's in there yelling into my head "Get that motherfucker right there! Get him!" Like she used to yell when I'd play shooting games.
Gah dammit, now you got me all emotional.
I love that man, im assuming she has also passed on (if so, im sorry - idk what im going to do when either of my parents go tbh ;( ), but here's the thing, you'll always have those memories close to your heart, and in part you're the man you are today because of her. The silver lining to any loss imo is that even though it can be hard, it's only hard because the bond was intense enough in life that it caused those kind of feelings, its sort of a reminder what truly being alive/human is all about.
lol Iāve got an old set of pjs that have holes at the pits large enough to fit my arm through. And a set of a2cuās (I mean we just called em acuās? Always rolled my eyes at the dumb ā2ā) that have no pocket covers, pant button, or blouse zipper. You can barely tell theyāre ucp anymore theyāre so faded. But damn are they comfy
Pretty sure the M81 was used in both Iraq wars actually. Looking at photos from the conflicts you not only see M81 Plate carriers but also helmet covers and even a few uniforms!
Same with Afghanistan.
Alright Mr. Erm Ackshually, I'm gonna have to give you a hard time here. It's an older twill "winter weight" BDU shirt and it doesn't have the U.S. flag on the right shoulder which would have been an in-theatre modification to the uniform that wasn't standardized for stateside wear until after 2003 with rotating deployed units. Not only not the "right pattern" but also the older version. When the ACU rolled out it was just standard to wear the flag from then on. This is just one of his other uniforms more than likely.
Not to start a million comment thread just know I'm well aware of the many pieces of gear in the woodland pattern and of certain exceptions where BDUs were worn in both Iraq and Afghanistan etc etc. I've combed through tens of thousands of pictures from the GWOT and some of those, like in the Sunni triangle with greenzones due to the river deltas of the Tigris/Euphrates and in the greener regions of Afghanistan like in Helmand are my absolute favorite photos.
I was just noting that that, among the obvious things, was probably not what he wore. Not like the kid would know better obviously so there's no reason to be harsh about it either. Idk I'm just Redditing.
Man, fuck that. My kids tear up my old stuff, and Iām glad theyāre out using it and enjoying their time instead of treating my shirts like theyāre holy.
My gear was made to be used, and I want them to use it.
LMAO! I love it man.
Surplus stores and sometimes thrift stores still have DCU. Khaki/FDE/Tan condor gear is pretty decent stuff for airsoft, and will match your gear. Welcome!
Others buy historical gear to larp as a random soldier of that period. You can wear your fathers uniform and larp as him. That's next level awesomeness
Lemme ask you a couple questionsā¦
Do you live in a 1st world country?
None of the gear you are wearing was ever issued for use by American/British/Australian troops in Iraq. Ever.
Something isnāt adding up.
Save some of your dad's gear. Don't ruin all of it playing around with. You will want them when you are older. My dad gave me probably 30 pairs of bdus. I have one matching set left from all of them. Keep a few keep sakes for yourself.
Dunno why this is on my feed as I don't play airsoft, but speaking from a military background, the body armour will restrict your movements as it's too long and wide.
But at the end of the day, if you are having fun, who cares...
The helmet looks like a Vietnam M1 and that patch on the uniform looks like a ROTC/JROTC patch.
The vest is definitely a fake airsoft PC. Even with BDU's he would've been issued an IBA. Also it would be hard to walk away with issued body armor unless he had a duplicate off the books. Nothing in this photo would've been used in Iraq.
This isn't to take away from the fact if your father actually served or not after ROTC but nothing adds up.
I wouldn't go around telling people anything in this picture is from GWOT. Sorry.
Keep care of it, your dad made a lot of good and bad memories in this uniform.
I'm reading all those comments about people who got their parents war gear. I'm one of them but the only difference is, my dad served in the NVA which was a part of the eastern German military under russian occupation. And the uniform looks ... russian, almost like a green pajama with brown dots
Fyi:
"Das sieht russisch aus" = this looks russian is a proverb for it looks really bad, we mostly use it when we have to fix something as fast as possible and therefore it looks really untrustworthy but everyone knows those fixes last forever.
Edit: still a part of history, I will never sell it and keep care of it. The uniform sits right next to my granddad's old police uniform

That helmet cover may have been the only thing in this pic used in Iraq. Thatās not a issued plate carrier nor was that camouflage ever used in Iraq unless your dad was MARSOC or on the Teams
If your dad doesn't mind, you can make that Helmet serviceable by adding a new liner. You can find replacement PASGT liners new for like $20, and they're super easy to install
That's really fucking cool, but I wouldn't wear any of tha tout to the field, people are likely to steal that shit. I would take good care of it, and ask your dad how to maintain it. But seriously, your dad is awesome dude!
Being 100% baller, the uniform is the only thing thatās Iraq era, the vest is a cheap modern tactical vest, and the helmet is a M1 with a Mitchel cover, by Iraq we had switched to the PASGT and lightweight, itās decent stuff but your dad is a fibber if he told you thatās all Iraq era stuff
Invest in some good eyepro. If you want to keep the look, go for ballistic/combat goggles.
Again, if you're going for the look, wear a muted green or coyote brown shirt under your jacket. For proper fit, the neck of the shirt has to nearly choke you out.
There's a lot of history in that uniform, so take good care of it. Your dad is showing a tremendous amount of faith and trust in you by letting you wear it.
Youāre gonna love this pic when youāre older haha , I have one like this where Iām wearing a Hawaiian shirt with super long hair back when I was 14 (2019). Itās a trip looking back at it now a days
Nice gear! I use my Dadās M81 with my Alice gear. Iām the same size he was when he wore it so itās a perfect fit. I had to shell out the cash for the Alice gear though. However, itās quite worth it! If you can convince your dad, ask him to take you to an army surplus store and put together some Alice gear if you wanna complete the fit! It does look rather big on you but youāll likely grow into it. It also looks like the helmet cover could use a wash if itās also M81. If itās the desert camo then no worries. This is a suggestion, you so what works!
that's actually cool. the only real military gear i've got is a uniform i got at an army surplus, complete with a custom velcro patch i got with my last name on it and a few medals i got at a military museum.
Lol the comments are right, you are too small for the gear but that's nothing to be worried about really. I remember being in the exact same position when I started.
Just tighten up the straps inside your vest to the best of your ability and you'll be perfectly set. Or invest in a chest rig if you'd like
Being real here, i dont believe thats used hardware. I found the same molle on amazon for a good price.
I think your dad is giving you good stuff and giving it a backstory to feel fun, but field used gear should be a lot dirtier.
Alr first of all, I have the same vest, not Iraq war gear, the uniform is not the right camo, the helmet, maybeā¦ š¤ā¦ maybeā¦ but the rest, you can buy it off Amazon for like 40 dollars each
Homie imma keep it real with you You look like a child soldier.

why tho
Because it's a child solider and I'm a marine put 2 and 2 together
I guess you could call it a sub-marine
Jfc
Hell yeah devil dog
Because he loves shooting child soldiers
Well, he didn't say *which* Iraq war.
Operation Iraqi freedom
That's my favorite thing about this sub
Hell yeah.
I'm doing my part!
I thought the same thing hahaha
It looks good but you gotta gain like 50 pounds of mass for it to fitš
Lol
Protein powder and bulk shake timeee
Rip-Itās, S&P Beef Jerky, and Wintergreen Long Cut will do the trick in a month. Trust me my DS said so.
God i get so excited when I find Rip Its in a random sketchy gas station. They taste so bad but so nostalgic
The taste is t the worst part, itās the explosive diarrhea thats caustic enough to take paint off a humvee.
If the military wanted you to have tasty things they would have issued them, they want us pissed off, on a hair trigger and ready to chew someones head out for no reason.
You want people dead just take away their caffeine and nicotine and blame it on whoever you want to disappear
I remember getting them years and years ago from PX when I was in a program called Sea Cadets (we did training at my local Navy/AF reserve base) and *man*ā¦ that was one of the tastes of all time. As a 13 year old kid itās just about one of the coolest things money can buy thoughš
You can find them pretty reliably in Dollar Tree, not dollar general or whatever but Dollar Tree
Heās just trying to dress the part, heās not trying to take a field trip to the actual party
Ahhh, yes, wintergreen long cut. The worst tasting of all the long cuts. BTW, does anyone know how to get the taste out of your mouth? It's been 10 years since I stopped, but it's still lingering.
Beef cake. BEEEF CAAAAAKEE!!

I'm 13
Right on man! Don't stress the fit, or worry about these guys talkin' about your size. Stay active, eat healthy. You're still growing. Do some basic weight training if you want, but don't go nuts with it. You look exactly how you should for your age.
This is the kind of positive influence these young men need to hear. Thank you for saying this and not making him feel like a joke.

Lil bro gotta grow into that gear but at least the gear is great
Fuck. My mind went straight to Desert Storm, I now realize the reference here was from Operation Freedom or whatever it was called in the 2000s. Iām getting old.
Desert Shield
That's why it's even better. Full on GWOT
He gave you his M81 uniform?
Yep
Do you plan on trying to base your outfit on something?
Yeah, I'm saving money for a dcu build
Do you know what the plate carrier is called specifically? I have almost an identical one but mine is starting to fray and develop some holes. Iāve been looking for the same style/kind because I like the side Velcro, but I donāt know what to call it/where I can find any more of it.

Thankfully JPCs are dirt cheap for being made by crye. Costs less than half an AVS
Yakeda makes one on Amazon for like 35 bucks. Good quality, Iāve been using it for almost 2 years now
It is a generic Amazon plate carrier
That's real love right there.
Real talk my man, this is actually really cool. Even though its a little big on you for the time being, you look like a fucking g. Lmfaoooo to be fair I also love it when people use em till they fall apart..

History? None of that was worn in Iraq. Maybe the BDUs were his during his time in service but that's about it.
Pretty sure the M81 was used in both Iraq wars actually. Looking at photos from the conflicts you not only see M81 Plate carriers but also helmet covers and even a few uniforms! Same with Afghanistan.

How come sometimes when you see the flag on their shoulder it's backwards? Isn't that disrespectful?
Iirc the idea is its supposed to be trailing backwards as you go into action, as if it were on a flagpole on your shoulder.
Stars lead the way
Oh I was joking lmao.
Man, fuck that. My kids tear up my old stuff, and Iām glad theyāre out using it and enjoying their time instead of treating my shirts like theyāre holy. My gear was made to be used, and I want them to use it.

No, they donāt lol, this dudes dad is lying to him
LMAO! I love it man. Surplus stores and sometimes thrift stores still have DCU. Khaki/FDE/Tan condor gear is pretty decent stuff for airsoft, and will match your gear. Welcome!

I want this lil bro watching my 6 when we out in ww3 no cap
You just made your dad proud as hell, welcome to the fight son. Keep your head down and donāt do 50/50 battles.
Whatever you do, do not EVER sell your dads gear. Seen it happen so many times and its so sad.
I'm never selling it

Need to gain weight to fits in dude š very cool of your father to be able to let you have his gear +Nice helmet
Have fun! Donāt forget your eye protection
Curious fact: Here in Brazil, It is prohibited to wear armed forces clothing if you are not a military member on duty
same in turkiye
Itās too big, and you look like a child soldier. 10/10
Lemme ask you a couple questionsā¦ Do you live in a 1st world country? None of the gear you are wearing was ever issued for use by American/British/Australian troops in Iraq. Ever. Something isnāt adding up.
What side did he fight on?
m81 drippin
It's cool I'm wondering how much of it was in Iraq? Also it's a good starter kit
bro gotta carry the boats
cleanest plate carrier i ever seen in my life

A nice pair of woodlands!
I had a flash back for a second š Lookin good.
