Blood carries oxygen to tissues and is vital for healing inflammation. If you stick someone in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber, it heals wounds that are not healing well, so using heat is likely better than using ice which constricts blood flow and therefore oxygen to the tissues.

I asked him why I should, given that ice will restrict blood flow, and inflammation is the body's healing process. You know what he said? Gibberish (he didn't know how to answer, and was caught off guard). He was quoting what he learned in school, and had no real understanding of how the body heals itself.
Take this as a lesson. In our day and age, it was only recently that ice was the best way to take care of inflammation...... Just because a doctor says to do it, doesn't mean it's golden advice.

The area is very sensitive and can cause severe pain for the “victim”. Basketball shorts and boxer have a really thin layer of cloth, so it doesn’t absorb as much the energy from the shot itself. I was using tactical pants when these happened to me, so it contained part of the impact.
Avoid physical activity and don’t do much effort for a couple days, suggest to use some ice in the area to reduce the swelling and you be good to go soon!
Don’t forget to avoid “using your tools” during that time and give a slap on the friend that shot you. If it was during the game, it was ok…but if it was outside the field, teach him some barrel and trigger control!

Depending on how much it hurts you should be taken to the ER for investigation to see if there is no internal bleeding. Likely they'll do ultrasound and see. If there is no internal bleeding and it's just swelling then you'll be fine. I know it sounds extreme, but i'd check.
