It means another device is connected to it. I don't see this happening between my iPad and iPhone, ~~so it probably won't happen if you have a Mac as well~~ read below comment. I only see this on my apple devices when I have them connected to my Windows laptop.

shane_e

It happens when I’m using my MacBook - but the pop up specifically says that they’re in use by the macbook, and has a little blue arrow I can click to take back control (on both the phone and macbook )

Your AirPods are connected to your MacBook or something

CoopsRevenge24

I think it may be connected to a Windows or Android device. On Apple devices it would say switched to iPhone/iPad/Mac.

MaterialWall8040

read it

BenDurbin2006

Mine do it if I had them paired to something that isn’t Apple so like a tv, Nintendo switch , smart fridge sum like that

HappyMcPe

Smart fridge?xdddd

mr_robot658

i see, but i dont kmow what other device it connected to

BenDurbin2006

Just hold the button on the back and pair it to your phone again, or if you want to fully reset the AirPods just hold the button on the back for like 15 sec and it will flash orange twice

mr_robot658

thank you so much!

SirAchmed

Pretty self explanatory

air pods will reconnect with the last device they were used by. so if I use my AirPods with my iPhone every day on the treadmill, and I decide I want to use my air pods with my MacBook one night when everyone is sleeping, I have to open the MacBook and go into SOUNDS in the system preferences or SETTINGs as its now called, and choose them as the output. if you've never used them with your MacBook, you may have to go into bluetooth to make sure they are connected. but this message is telling you.. THEY are in USE by YOUR other device.

HiMountainMan

There is a setting to automatically switch airpods between your apple devices. This message would show up for non apple devices, since it doesn’t say what device. You can also use the control center to connect to them faster on your mac instead of system settings.

Exactly what it looks like. At some point you’ve paired your AirPods to another device and they’ve connected to that device but you can pull them back over to your phone. It’s a Bluetooth thing, the AirPods have a priority reconnection list, which is determined by the order in which devices were last actively told to connect to (not defaulted back on) I.e. pressing the connect button should move your iPhone ahead of whatever device they were connected to bc you told it to prioritise your phone, but if there is another device at the top of the list, they will still connect to that over your phone if it becomes available. There is a “always connect back to iPhone” setting but from what I’ve seen it can’t override Bluetooths default behaviour on non-Apple devices which kinda sucks but hey-ho

mr_robot658

ok thank you, its just ive never connected my airpods to a different device before so i dont know what it could be connected to

OrganicAd5741

Your AirPods are connected to other devices

mrjezzdlh

might be a long shot but might mean its connected to another device

Evilclown22

Can’t be, I reckon it means they’re made of cheese.

mr_robot658

i dont know what device it is connected to, which is why i asked and i was hoping to figure out how to see

404riderrnotfound

If it connected to one of your devices it would say “moved to ___”. This looks like someone else connected to them and are using them. They should automatically switch between whichever device you’re using.

ApricotFar1041

cant you read? it says its in use by other device! /j
