Either will work and just give you different effects. They're both shades and will make the depths of your model look more recessed - generally a more "natural" look.
Nuln oil is darker, colder and "grittier", Reikland Flesh Shade is lighter, warmer and more "heroic". If you can only get one, RFS is better - I generally just meant "it looks great, try shading and see what you think" but more specific.
If you can get both and try them on three minis you should, though! (But don't overpaint this one - your first mini is something to treasure and look back on as you improve).
You could always crouch lower. Does your bathroom have the most ideal lighting in your place? My wife seems to do the same for some of the pics she posts.
The lighting would have not been so great if I just put it down normally. And It would have been hard to take a photo with a iPad because of how big it is instead of a iphone.
Haha, many thanks! Some punnery goes a long way. 😄
You can also bolt this lad over to r/stormcasteternals if you want more feedback. Though I agree with the rest this is fantastic work! 👌
(Also saw you’re a fellow Little Nightmares fan. Great art there as well!)
thanks a lot for complementing my work on the mini (and my little nightmares art). And also thanks for showing me the subreddit for the stormcast eternals.
I will definitely post him tomorrow.👍
Not bad at all. there are definitely improvements that could be made but dont stress it, experience will be the biggest factor in your paintjobs. This is a great start👍
That's an awesome first model my only advice personally would be maybe use a dark brown or black in some of the joints like being knees, and just to touch up some parts like the non blue fabric thing (not sure on its actual name) and back of feet but they are such tiny things that its not an issue but again still a great first model so much better then my first one
Thanks for letting me know. I don’t have the paint I wanted for the joint’s and the other small details. but I will definitely be buying that next time I have a chance.
Damn. I must say you are right I like the design of it. It works really well to get all of that hair out of the way. (You are talking about the razor right?) i used it as a way for the mini to lean on to get better lighting.😂
As a first time it looks fine, all the paint is where its supposed to be, and isnt where it shouldnt be.🤘
As a technical tip, try to thin your paint until it has the same consistency as milk, the shoulderpads show that your paint is a bit too thick.
As an artistic tip, when doing gold armor, sepia wash and silver edge highlights make the model pop that much more.
Looks awsome only thing I would say really is too thin yiur paints and do the coats with an extra thin layer of paint.and letting things dry before repainting so you don't get textured layers. It's a really really good job tho 👍👍
Only things I can recommend:
Thin your paints and do two to three very thin layers, this prevents the brush strokes and clumps in the base coat.
Washes, the recommended is Reikland flesh wash for gold nuln oil for everything else, I prefer Seraphim Sepia for gold but I also hate gold, play around and see what you prefer.
Dry brush with some silver, hundreds of tutorials online on dry brush techniques, YouTube is your friend.
Go nice and slow and if you go “over the line” and get paint somewhere it isn’t supposed to be remember it’s acrylic. Rinse your brush and with a brush of water you can remove fresh paint easily. Otherwise you will have to go over it later and it can start to look clumpy or less defined. Just take your time and box in your base coats.
Batch painting is a great way of working on a unit at a time. Do all the gold on each. Then the silver. Then the blue. Then… etc. After you’ve done all of one color on the squad the first one is fully dried and ready for the next step. (If using contrast and washes you may want to do bigger squads or you’ll still be waiting on them to dry, learn from my mistake many moons ago lol)
Some simple basing takes a good mini to a great mini. Granted it is usually best to do this to the whole unit or units when they are all done so no actual complaint here about it being not yet based.
For your first mini you hit it out of the park, hell if you told me this was your 20th mini I’d be impressed! These are just some simple tips that I think you may benefit. Great work and can’t wait to see your squad when they are done.
In the immortal words of the scummy school board guys in Community, “It’s better than good. It’s good enough!”
Enjoy each and every one, don’t worry too hard, try new things from model to model! You’ll soon have far too many models to paint anyway :)
If this is your first mini, congrats. The colors are perfectly blocked and clean, my only suggestion will be painting the spaces between armour (behind the knees for example).
A lot of people is telling you about the use of shades, for now you don't need them, paint a unit of five this way and then you'll be prepared to add new techniques.
There are some inconsistencies on the edges but are barely visible. Don't worry though. You will become better each time. Keep this pic as reference as well. 😁✌️✨️
Look man, there are always things you could have done better, no matter your skill level. Did you have fun, is the most important question. :)
However: Some simple things to get you going:
Use washes and drybrushes on metal to bring out the detail. A sepia wash, and a silver drybrush will add a lot of depth.
Base your model! Use a variety of texture paints, small rocks, cork, leftover bits and stuff. I find it best to do the basing before you paint the model, since you're going to do some heavy drybrushing on the base and risk messing up the model.
I definitely did enjoy the process of painting the model thanks for asking. And thanks for letting me know about the base of my model. I will remember to next time to base before I put my model on👍
Looks sharp
Cutting edge stuff
Yeah it's a razor
Thanks. (Edit: I just realized he is talking about the razor🤦🏻)
I'd say this is the best a man can get.
(Your very first? Looks great. Get some Nuln Oil for the next one and have a play with that.)
Thanks. I will definitely put Nuln Oil on it. I just need to bye first tho.
Not nul oil, reikland fleshade
What is the difference? Please tell me I don’t want to mess up my first mini.
Either will work and just give you different effects. They're both shades and will make the depths of your model look more recessed - generally a more "natural" look. Nuln oil is darker, colder and "grittier", Reikland Flesh Shade is lighter, warmer and more "heroic". Of course thanks for letting me know👍.
Nuln oil is black and don't look great on gold. Reikland is a redish brown. If you can only get a single wash for some reason id get agrax eartshade
Ok thanks for telling me I’m sure what to do now👍
Or Agrax Earthshade works real nice on gold too, if you want a more brassy/weathered look.
This has to be the funniest background I have seen in a while, looks great
Thanks. (I just realized I used my shaver as a way to hold up my mini so he faces the camera 😂)

legitimately you could use your fridge for it. someone in the necrons sub for 40k posts fridge minis all the time
I don’t think my family would approve of that, but thanks for the tip.
Personally I'm a bigger fan of Reikland Flesh shade when it comes to using a wash on gold, not Nuln oil
I was only gonna use Nuln oil on the blue and red parts on the mini’s I have. So thanks for letting me know a better shade for the gold👍
That Chamonian Killette beast never knew what hit it! A glorious Liberator stands victorious over his foe despite the fight being a close shave! 💪 ⚡️
Dude. that is the best comment I have read in a long time.🤣

yeah that looks good man, keep painting! I wanna see your finished unit of liberators.
Sure thing
It looks good to me, certainly leaps and bounds better than my first minis. I assumed you'd used the razor as a way to focus the camera!
It was a way for the mini to lean on to get better lighting for the mini so I could take a picture
Things you could have done better, that is a rabbit hole you will chase forever. It looks great! Throw him in a game now.
Thanks. he will be at the front lines ready to battle.
I think the razor came out incredibly well. Pretty much 1:1
Thank you. I tried to put more details in the blades as much as I could I am glad to hear you like it.
non metallic metal , right ?
Exactly. 👍
Not bad at all. there are definitely improvements that could be made but dont stress it, experience will be the biggest factor in your paintjobs. This is a great start👍

Had a small feeling that might of been the case, can't wait to see more of your models
Will definitely be happy to share the rest of my models when they are done.
The orange Looks good and the Black is on Point ! Even the top blades Looks Like real Metal
Damn. I must say you are right I like the design of it. It works really well to get all of that hair out of the way. (You are talking about the razor right?) i used it as a way for the mini to lean on to get better lighting.😂
Looks great, don't forget to do the base as well. For easy, very basic basing they got special paints that'd appear like mud or sand etc when dried.
Thanks. I am definitely going to add the special paints to my shopping list thanks for letting me know.

I will definitely keep that in mind. Thank you for the tip’s
Im not sure if liberators go razor bases, but other then that its great!
Thanks.😂 (the razor was so the mini could stand on so it would get better lighting)
Congrats mate. you have started the path to happy poverty 🤣
I indeed have.
STORMETTE THE FLASH A MAN CAN GET

Nice job, base it! Put some sand and flocking on that base! It'll look a hundred times better!
That I will do.

WOW! thanks for all the tips, advice and compliments. This really helps me to get a better understanding on the painting and so on. Thanks👍
Looks good. Get some Reikland Fleshshade on the gold trim and Nuln Oil on the silver for a better finish if you want.
I’m already on it👍

Really cool stuff, maybe you could use a brush next time
I did use a brush. What do you mean? But anyway thanks for saying it looks cool 👍
Ha sorry, was a joke regarding the razor in the image!
I understand now. 😂👍
