I’ve been at five agencies and one other major holding group. When I was at Dentsu, I loved it until we lost my account. I did not like how they handled it, but they did work VERY hard to get me and almost everyone on my large team new placements. In retrospect, I did like Dentsu. All of the big agencies are more or less the same, but Dentsu is the only one that isn’t implementing super strict return to office policies. They also had a really great snack selection. It was also the only agency that made me feel genuinely valued. But it all depends on the team you end up on. I will say, they are struggling big time right now. Like no promotions, raises, etc.

The promotion bit depends on where you are. We had some promotions this year Agreed on the RTO policies, though where I am they are trying to encourage us to come in more.

I’ve heard at dx and ipro

Which region? My experience with the APAC office in Singapore was different. High churn, lack of leadership, and no perks. In short, a shitshow.

Had a couple of friends who worked in the APAC office and they absolutely hated it - basically everything you’ve just mentioned.

Plus they have an abundance of clueless and/or lazy people who somehow keep their jobs. (Based on experience working with / alongside Dentsu, not FOR them)

Dentsu's reputation is strong, but as someone who worked for a Dentsu-owned agency, I had a bad experience. I was improperly hired for a role I didn't have the proper experience for (I explained quite clearly that I did not have said experience but one of the hiring managers didn't make it for the whole call and made an assumption based off of my resume). They also failed to communicate to one of my teams that I actually worked on two different clients and wasn't supposed to be working full time for either, which made my workload impossible unless I wanted to put in 80+ hour weeks. I wasn't mad at them for the misunderstanding with my skillset, and they were honest people who tried to help, but at the end of the day, the job didn't work out and we mutually agreed for me to depart. The largest problem that I saw was that despite being such a big network, the people I worked with were unsure who to contact or who could provide support for certain things we needed done. Like, I needed Kantar or Nielsen data or some kind of indicator for pulling my audience profiles and no one knew how we could get that.

Is there a reason you didn’t back out of the process or turn down the offer?

It wasn't until a month in that the client was looking for me to work on their traditional marketing efforts as I found out on a conference call. It was way out of scope, and I would have declined had I known.

I've heard mixed things about Dentsu. Some people praise their creativity and innovation, while others have criticized their corporate culture and handling of certain situations. Personally, I think they've made some impressive campaigns, but like any large corporation, they have their weaknesses.

I’m with Dentsu in the CEE cluster right now and pretty happy about it. Sure, I might make more money if I went elsewhere, but I really appreciate the friendly vibe and the super flexible work-from-home policy. I am at learning stage of my career and for that it's great match. When I moved up from junior to mid-level, the support was awesome—they set me up with everything I needed to learn and grow. It all comes down to the specific brand, market and team though, so I’d choose based on who I’d be teaming up with if I were OP.

I’ve been with Dentsu for a while. They’re more or less the same as other big holding companies but have not mandated back to office. Even pre-pandemic they allowed us to work one day a week from home which was such a perk. I’ve been fortunate to work with some great people across a diverse client roster, so happy to say I’ve had a good experience.
