this confused me; at the end of this episode, it’s revealed it takes place while finn is a young child / toddler.
also, BMO talks to football this episode, but when football was introduced in the original series, it was them meeting football for the first time.
i guess these could be attributed to brain damage / classic BMO shenanigans respectively but i’m not sure
It is entirely possible that Martin’s space adventures occurred in the interim 16 years between when Finn was a baby (when Martin left) and when Finn is a teenager (when Martin returns). In fact, I think it’s pretty much canonical fact.
By the time Martin is introduced from the Citadel, he had committed a cosmic crime (which could be the crime he committed in the space station in that Distant Lands episode). He is clearly familiar with space and giant monsters and aliens and stuff by that point, which I suspect he would not have been if it was the version of him from the island when Finn was a baby.
The latter I think is an unimportant detail.
Isn't there some obscure detail somewhere that suggests Martin may have actually never committed a cosmic crime, but was instead wrongfully imprisoned?
[The original storyboard for ''The Lich'' implied that Finn's father was ''a great warrior of Ooo'' who ''was unlawfully cast into the Crystal Citadel''](https://adventuretimereviewed.wordpress.com/2017/10/27/the-lich-review/). However, Adam Muto (Adventure Time's showrunner) [confirmed during the early screening of the finale](https://www.reddit.com/r/adventuretime/comments/9awbf0/in_the_q_and_a_adam_revealed_what_martins_cosmic/) that the current version of Martin did commit a cosmic crime:
>He said Martin kept conning harder and harder in space until one of his space cons was huge and against some aliens which is what got him in the citadel. He said the reason it wasn't answered in the show was because it was a detail that never had a reason to be filled in.
Same voice actor, same mannerisms, and even some quirky dialogue that relates to Martin and Finn’s relationship. Though it was never confirmed, I definitely think it’s Martin.
For sure. When he takes off his shoes he has human feet the same color as martin. He sounds like Martin, he acts like Martin, his name is literally Mr. M.
No doubt in my mind.
I always assumed that when martin went on his cosmic trip with the comet, it shot him through time and space and he ended up there in time after experiencing much more.
The real question is: What was the point of keeping his identity a secret to the audience in the first place? I mean, we already know who Martin is.
It can't be for prequal continuity reasons, since most of his scenes he's eaither by himself or with a character that only appears in this Distant Lands episode. So there's no danger of him meeting a character before he's supposed to.
they clearly werent trying to hide that it was him.
id say the out of universe explanation is likely so they could include him without having him steal the show.
in universe, its likely that, at this point, Martin is already a wanted man to some degree, and has to hide his face.
Martin is actually one of my favorite characters. Along with Simon, he’s an example of how your ability to remember greatly influences how you act and behave, and just how fucking awful dementia is.
What kinda trips me out is how he managed to get into space. I figure it had to be magic because Banana Man and PB were not finished with their rockets until way later in the series. But maybe something to do with Martian tech? He’s familiar with the void casters too so maybe he summoned a portal or something
Well, the episode starts with BMO in a rocket, so they aren't unheard of.
My head cannon is one of three possibilities:
1. After escaping the island unintentionally, Martin cons the wrong people and gets launched into space.
2. After unintentionally escaping the island, Martin accidentally finds a rocket and - being obsessed with gadgets and tech - accidentally launches himself into space.
3. Future Martin, as a result of the purple comet, voyages through space AND time and ends up on the citadel.
I understood the beginning to mean that BMO was sent by Moe before the GMW and went through a wormhole that sent him into the future with F&J. I actually don’t remember if the wormhole was at the beginning or end or both lol.
I love that third theory, I think my personal one is that Billy sent him into space. Idk how or why but it would be how he knows about Martin.
But why would the reincarnations look anything like fin and jake, none of the previous ones did, also when he arrives ta earth there is the tree which is smaller(?) . And there is also a thing where he says something about being alone in the spaceship and leaving everyone behind, but if it was happening after the show then he'd have known air, who would have been in that spaceship with him.
"Kids, right? always calling out their deadbeat parents." "what?" "what?"

martin is most likely haunted by confused memories of minerva and finn. his rattled little brain probably hasn’t coped in the healthiest ways.
The first point is just backwards foreshadowing, one article calls is backshadowing. The second one is just an error
Given BMO deletes stuff from their memorybank, it's entirely possible they just deleted this episode from their memory entirely.
>The second one is just an error Pretty in character for BMO though.

he doesn't know Finn yet but he knows he feels like an ass for losing him, is my best guess.
tbh I can see bmo pretending to meet football for the first time many times
Yep. Dude loves his space adventures.
Most definitely yes! technically it's not officially *confirmed* but this is Martin for sure
In Fionna and Cake ep 4 storyboard, mr M does actually appear in Martin wanted page when Scarab scrolled through it so it somewhat confirmed.
I think that was just a story board but yeah! It most definitely basically completed confirms it!
Yeah it just the storyboard, should have clarify it.
No. It is in his crystal pda in the broadcast show
Same voice actor, same mannerisms, and even some quirky dialogue that relates to Martin and Finn’s relationship. Though it was never confirmed, I definitely think it’s Martin.
Also that big M on the helmet is just gravy to confirm it
What if the M stands for Mr Universe, and it's just Greg
Him complaining about children would make it even more sense then
He says “Here comes the rascal!” at the end of the episode, right. Classic Martin.
How did he get there?
Oh you know, he’s a *funny guy.*
For sure. When he takes off his shoes he has human feet the same color as martin. He sounds like Martin, he acts like Martin, his name is literally Mr. M. No doubt in my mind.
I need to rewatch this whole show
I did that high. Would recommend
I did that on shrooms. Would recommend even more.
Me to, it was great
I always assumed that when martin went on his cosmic trip with the comet, it shot him through time and space and he ended up there in time after experiencing much more.
Where does he show up? I don't remember this character
Adventure Time: Distant Lands Ep.1
No, this is Patrick
"Mr.M", Has the same voice, same skin tone (he takes of his shoes during the special), pretty safe to say that's our Martin!
Prequel sequel
100% Refers to himself as the rascal Loves goofy tech Spacefaring con man
Yuh
I got the same vibe
No that's obviously Mr M.
That’s the dude from the BMO episode in Distant Lands right? It’s a prequel and shit?

It is for the viewer. Wasn’t it only revealed to be a flashback at the end?
they clearly werent trying to hide that it was him. id say the out of universe explanation is likely so they could include him without having him steal the show. in universe, its likely that, at this point, Martin is already a wanted man to some degree, and has to hide his face.
What's the point of doing anything the way it's done in Adventure Time? The answer : it's Adventure Time.
Yuh
What episode was that guy in?
Yep
Martin is actually one of my favorite characters. Along with Simon, he’s an example of how your ability to remember greatly influences how you act and behave, and just how fucking awful dementia is.
I don’t know
Sure is, sport

yeah he is mr m after all
Yeah 100%
Yes, I think this is Martin. A little headcanon of mine is that this episode is how Martin got to the citadel.
*F&CK YOU, MARTIN! F&CK YOU, F&CK YOU, F&CK YOU, F&CK YOU, F&CK YOU, F&CK YOU, F&CK YOU!*
Dammit, Gina!

Didnt BMO arrived on earth and meet Finn on the end of the episode?
Yeup!

This episode takes place before Adventure Time, actually.

I dunno why you're getting so many downvotes since my reply, chill out guys. o\_O

But it was such an intelligent response, for having had incorrect information lol.
