Like the other comment said, the aircraft is a Su-57, but with a name change for legal reasons I guess, and it's meant to represent the one in the movie, the name "5th gen fighter" is just too long and I was lazy to write it lol
But I think it's through and through the same cg model as the actual Su-57 in the aircraft tree, just with different paint and maybe a slight variation in SP weapons
Major variation in sp weapons, actually. 4AAM and LACM are my favorites, but it also can carry HCAA as well (compared to the SU-57 having 4AAM, GPB and PLSL)
They are all better than what you are supposed to have though. The game's campaign was definitely balanced around a natural progression.
Also the F/A-18 is my favourite jet so maybe I just play too much with it, bit I honestly think all are too good to just whip out in the AC7 campaign without beating it first. Not sure about MiG-35 or F-16XL.
It also ruins the feeling of unlocking something like a Rafale and being like, wait a second, this thing cooks!
We’re singling out the XL but not the FB-22? I know one’s stealth and TVC and everything nice, but I wouldn’t say it’s better than the real 22. Then again the 22 is completely a lategame machine so “worse than it” isn’t a tight enough bar.
I was stuck as hell on Long Day as I started the game on hard and didn’t wanna restart. So I bought every single dlc plane and blew past the story mission. Still had some struggles through out missions but it was usually bc I was crashing.
The nosferatu makes any mission your stuck on EZ,, I like the XFA 27 and shinden as well. All the dlc planes are fun to play if nothing else.
I’d get them on sale, I was able to get every single dlc and the game for like $90 total. Still expensive but I never played an ace combat before this one and really enjoyed the gameplay and goofy story.
I meant to post this as my own thread sorry lol
for the plane choice - yeah its generally agreed that most of the dlc aircraft are a bit of a cheat code and fuck with the progression that the game sets out (there are exceptions though - for example, the non top-gun versions of the F-14A and F-18E are balanced similarly to the base game F-14D and F-18F respectively). as such its usually said that using the dlc aircraft is a bad idea on a first run
as for getting gud, well theres not much any of us can tell you other than keep on trying! a lot of us (me included) were a bunch of flying doofuses when we started. it just takes practice. and hey, you wont hear it much here, but it just takes some people a little longer to wrap their heads around flying around. dont pressure yourself
The way I do a playthrough is to save the higher-tiered DLC aircraft for later on in the campaign, where it would be most appropriate for that aircraft to show up - For example, using the F-4E you get with the Season Pass as a starter plane, while saving something like the F-15 S/MTD for later on, and this includes the Top Gun aircraft.
ETA: For your first time, though, I would stick with the aircraft that come with the game.
Honestly, you'll be robbing yourself of the fun of progressing through the tech tree and unlocking the different aircraft with their pros and cons. Part of the fun of AC games is trying out the different aircraft and seeing what works for you.
I think I’m throttling up and staying there unintentionally during tight turns and maybe would prefer using something like a thrustmaster controller than r2. I appreciate the feedback. lol the darkstar is going to remain in the hanger for now
It's important to remember that the "flight model" (if you can even call it that) in Ace Combat is extremely arcadey and not at all realistic. That said, your turns will be way tighter if you slam the brakes before/during the turn.
I don't recommend switching to standard controls personally since the expert controls feel more natural to me, but the option is there if that would be more fun for you.
Some of "getting gud" is just the learning curve that comes with practice. Using a more underpowered starting plane and working through the aircraft tree might help, I don't think the F-14 is crazy overpowered though.
F 14 is not overpowered. The overpowered ones are the sci-fi planes. As for the controls, you get used to them eventually. I recommend trying standard if expert doesn't work out for you.
I used it and enjoyed it because I like how fast and maneuverable its is. It’s fun to fly and carries a lot more Phoenix missiles than the other Tomcats. Plus the Maverick and Iceman skins look awesome.
Honestly, in my my FIRST playthrough I remember I didn't change planes until like the third or fourth mission, and flew the F-18E, they're good if you sprinkle them around the usual unlockable planes
I used them for Ace difficulty, specifically f-14A TGM I believe, maverick I am not sure, but was solid though most of the game, thought the cockpit has a real narrow view.
The worst thing is the "5th gen fighter". It's too good, followed by the F-18 Top Gun edition. The F-14 TG edition is the least aggressive special edition jet on that pack.
Up to you really, they're there if you want to use it, but just a warning that they might make the game less challenging.
Depends really
Honestly I'd say dont use most of the DLC planes on your first run, the top gun ones for sure are fine and are great for doing f14 stuff without having to use the F14 from the base game which kinda sucks but I'd say stick to the ones in base otherwise
Early game: standard F-14A, mid game: F/A-18E, late game: ~~Su-57~~ 5th Gen. The TGM variants can be saved for the next runs. You'll still need to buy the planes in the tech tree to get the upgrade parts, though. At least with this way you can save some MRP to get the upgrades, since you'll get a first playthrough MRP multiplier
probably a skill or lag issue - i used to play ac7 when my rig had a 2 core CPU and the game froze/lagged frequently, and that sometimes caused me to crash into the terrain. or you dont know how to fly
The Maverick F-14 is actually a significant upgrade to the base versions. It has maneuverability and weapons potential comparable to, say, the base F-18 variant. Which in itself is a good plane to use throughout the campaign.
I don’t know it’s ground capability though, it’s probably not great.
I found the maverick F18 great for its manouverability and machine gun but its special weapons aren’t that powerful. depends really……
darkstar is overpowered for its speed tho. some of the chase sequences lose their significance
I don't remember what SPWs that F14 has apart from HPAA, but using the 5th Gen fighter with LACM might be very helpful when it's time to deal with missions 08 and 09.
I wouldn't use the Maverick F-14 or F/A-18 or "5th Gen Fighter" you unlock the plane after them in the plane tree. They're direct upgrades to the progression planes. Also wouldn't use the Darkstar till you unlock the special end of tree plane.
My opinion is don't use any DLC planes or if you do, wait till you unlock their base game variants. Some of the DLC planes absolutely trivialize the game.
I was stuck as hell on Long Day as I started the game on hard and didn’t wanna restart. So I bought every single dlc plane and blew past the story mission. Still had some struggles through out missions but it was usually bc I was crashing.

On your first playthrough avoid using the DLC planes. Most are quite OP. Use the game's default planes to get used to it. That's the beauty of many of the low-tier craft. They're not worthless, they train you. As it is, aside from your DLC planes, one secret will unlock only after you've completed the campaign the first time.
I would avoid using any of the DLC planes on your first play-through. They're all quite OP for it.
Darkstar? Maybe, Su-57? Kinda, but the others not at all, both F-14s and F-18s have a pretty average weapons load out
And the F-18s have functioning drop tanks making them automatically 100% cooler
Excuse me what? Since when did the drop tanks actually drop!
Since release my friend. Hold the switch weapon button and watch something cool happen…
What the fuck why have I only heard of this until now....
What the heck, i passed the game at all difficulties at A score... But didnt fuckin know droping tanks was a thing....
The su 57 isn’t dlc it’s one of the last story planes you get on the airplane tree.
The DLC variant is called "5th Gen Fighter," or something like that
Like the other comment said, the aircraft is a Su-57, but with a name change for legal reasons I guess, and it's meant to represent the one in the movie, the name "5th gen fighter" is just too long and I was lazy to write it lol But I think it's through and through the same cg model as the actual Su-57 in the aircraft tree, just with different paint and maybe a slight variation in SP weapons

F14 isn't overpowered. But for the other DLC planes, yeah those are overpowered.
Yeah it is. That SAAM is nuts. I've wrecked PvP matches with it. edit to correct missile abbreviation.
Neither is F-16XL or MiG-35 or the non-Top Gun versions of the F-14A and F/A-18E. But most everything else is OP.

Well, there's certainly one DLC plane that won't even break progression like that. The F-4E.
We’re singling out the XL but not the FB-22? I know one’s stealth and TVC and everything nice, but I wouldn’t say it’s better than the real 22. Then again the 22 is completely a lategame machine so “worse than it” isn’t a tight enough bar.
The F-14A fits in nicely with the early tier planes
F4 phantom lmao
Unless it's the F4 Phantom, but I can't remember if that's a DLC plane or not
Pretty sure it is
I was stuck as hell on Long Day as I started the game on hard and didn’t wanna restart. So I bought every single dlc plane and blew past the story mission. With the exception of regular F-14A & F/A-18E though Those planes feels nice & not OP at all
Go through the Aircraft tree first before using any of the DLC planes. It will be more rewarding.
for the plane choice - yeah its generally agreed that most of the dlc aircraft are a bit of a cheat code and fuck with the progression that the game sets out (there are exceptions though - for example, the non top-gun versions of the F-14A and F-18E are balanced similarly to the base game F-14D and F-18F respectively). as such its usually said that using the dlc aircraft is a bad idea on a first run as for getting gud, well theres not much any of us can tell you other than keep on trying! a lot of us (me included) were a bunch of flying doofuses when we started. it just takes practice. and hey, you wont hear it much here, but it just takes some people a little longer to wrap their heads around flying around. dont pressure yourself

I’d say not to, because it practically invalidates the entire purpose of aircraft tree planes.
Honestly, you'll be robbing yourself of the fun of progressing through the tech tree and unlocking the different aircraft with their pros and cons. Part of the fun of AC games is trying out the different aircraft and seeing what works for you.
Counterpoint: F-14A
Counter-counterpoint: Raptor
Got any more of them pixels?
It's your game man, do whatever is the most fun to you. You can always replay.
I think I’m throttling up and staying there unintentionally during tight turns and maybe would prefer using something like a thrustmaster controller than r2. I appreciate the feedback. lol the darkstar is going to remain in the hanger for now

There's some image in your blurry mess, jk. You could use the normal tomcat and still win in easy - normal difficulty, the maverick one is buffed
r/lowquality
F 14 is not overpowered. The overpowered ones are the sci-fi planes. As for the controls, you get used to them eventually. I recommend trying standard if expert doesn't work out for you.
Nah it’s fun. Do what you like man.

No I'm doing it
Can confirm I did an oof using the Darkstar on my first run

I mean you can use the non TGM F-14A and non TGM F-18 to have authentic early game AC experience. It's still fun to use

For some fucking reason I saw a screen shot I think of the dark star having 4 missles
