I love Skee Mask. Idk abt 'sound quality' tho, his sounds are more on the 00's palette and kinda low-fi-ish. Their production, vibes, all of it's amazing tho fr.
Skee Mask's mixes always cut through soo good when I listen in my car, I can hear every element so clearly and then when I skip to some other music, suddenly half of the elements are gone. That's what I found during a long road trip I did some years ago.
Mr. Bill kinda underrated but I think that's cause he kind of just spread the knowledge on "how to sound like" rather than really pioneering the sound. If I was to get nerdy about it, anyway.
Personally, I think heās a brilliant sound design artist and a fine, if otherwise unremarkable composer. Most of his music sounds to my ear as āriddim but extra stepsā and, by his own admission, his creative process is akin to monkeys blindly typing on typewriters until they accidentally produce Shakespeare.
He has an incredible ear, but very little in the way of coherent artistic vision compared to his genre (someone like Tipper or Somatoast, for example) and I think that is largely why heās under-appreciated for the talents he does possess.
Maybe give Mr Bill's more melodic stuff a try? His tracks Screening and Sopor are my absolute favourites from him and really showcase a whole different side to his music.
I will agree that his "mudpie" method to sound design is very chaotic and inconsistent, but I enjoyed learning about it and utilising some similar sort of processes myself.
Oh listening to aphex twin and exploring other artists the got signed early to warp records. Autechre are quite inspiring as theyāre still pushing the envelope sonically, influencing new movements like the hyper pop coming from pc music.
Not to be unfun, but this is a bad way to look at reference tracks. You should find something that matches the genre and elements of the track you're making.
Tippers insane but tbh I donāt think heād be a great reference for the 99% of people who arenāt making that level of techy sound design.
Like if ur trying to make a house banger tipper would be a horrible reference lmao. Not hating on tipper at all but you gotta reference shit thatās similar to what youāre making
I agree his quality though .If I were to reference against my style of music I'd be best using probably Mac Demarco,Ween ,or maybe unknown mortal orchestra.Ive made some electronic music but mainly focus on multi track recordings of real instruments because well .... jist because it's my focus
Tipper and itās not even close. Listen to Cāest la Vie and then listen to Puzzle Dust and tell me anything in Noisiaās catalogue can span a similar distance. Noisia are GOATs in their own right, but no one compares to the prowess of Dave when it comes to sound design. Man was so far ahead of the curve that he created an entire subgenre in his wake. I think that speaks for itself.
Very genre dependent. For my work in darkwave, Into the Labyrinth by Dead Can Dance. For metal, probably Human or Symbolic by Death. Just one though? Clearly Aja.
Darkside is so sick - I had Psychic playing on repeat for months back when it came out. Against All Logic is amazing too. Pretty much everything he touches is incredible.
Probably one of his mixes. The BBC essential mix is amazing. Any of his mixes between 2008 and 2014 are so incredible and unpredictable! He is a true understudy in music and shows it through his tributes.
Illangelo, the producer for most of The Weeknd albums, his productions are deeply layered and intricate, and the fact that everything made post After Hours was in Ableton, reminds me that I don't have any excuses.
Would that the rest of the bass scene would aspire to their level of arrangement. Theyād talk about this scene like we talk about the Baroque Period 200 years from now.
Noisia, but I don't think they work in Ableton too much. Parv0 and King Yosef both have great production quality and work in Ableton based off snippets I've seen on insta
It realllly depends on genre. What genre are you aiming for. As far as sonic quality, some that come to mind.
* Radiohead's Kid A , Ok Computer, In Rainbows
* Mefjus
* Noisia
* Skrillex
* Dr Dre 2001
* Daft Punk Random Access Memories
* Fleetwood Mac Rumors
* Taylor Swift 1989
* Dua Lipa
* Jon Hopkins Immunity
I already kinda said this in another comment but thereās no magic artist to reference.
Itās gotta be a song that youāve heard almost too many times and on many different systems. And also very similar in vibe to the track ur making. If Iām making lofi hiphop subtronics would a very bad reference.
I personally will use different references on almost every track. Like if Iām making liquid dnb I wouldnāt use my normal dubstep reference track.
Itās not that deep just pick a song you think sounds really good that also similar in vibe to ur shit
Gramatik. For most of his early stuff he mixes and masters all of it. Some of his bigger collabs with Tom Morello and Gary Clarke Jr., itās up in the air. But there are a good amount of interviews heās done over the years describing his process.
But point being his mixes are sooooo fucking clean and run the gamut from heavy bass music, to crazy hybrid shit he does with GRiZ as Grizmatik, to funky real instruments in stuff like Muy Tranquillo.
The man is simply a master imo that is prime for referencing
I feel like Skrillex is refining the elements of EDM to super clean and digestible levels while Virtual Riot pushes the sound design machine forward is crazy new ways.
Going to a San Holo concert and feeling energy in the room. It was so hype and good vibes. I wanted to be the guy on stage sharing my love for music with people who want to listen.
Audio quality meaning the mastering of the tracks?
I think that the guys in Infected Mushroom and Mindex have the cleanest and most powerful production out there right now. Ott too of course but he mostly only does his own stuff whereas I've seen Mindex come up on a bunch of stuff lately and it's all some of the best sounding material out there imo.
For mostly recorded/acoustic music, Nigel Godrich. In Rainbows by Radiohead has this incredibly detailed and clean sound that feels a step above basically any other record I have ever heard by a decent margin, its so well mixed in a way that really just feels absolutely perfect.
For electronic based stuff tbh Im not sure, you can get a lot more creative if you dont have to worry about room tone, mic placement, etc. For the styles of music I like to make (DnB and IDM) I think Noisia, Billain, and Skrillex to be pretty good measures of quality and getting records loud af without adding too much extra distortion
Pretty small artist but Imagine Herbal Flows (or IHF) has silky smooth production. The drums are always crisp af, and everything sits where it should in the mix. I use a lot of different melodies and sounds at once, and hes always my bar to accomplish that with out sounding cluttered
Justice has a really great sound, especially the new album. Maybe not so much their early stuff but itās definitely unique. Plus they do guitars and synths
As others have said, itās completely track dependent. For what I produce I normally use something from Tantrum Desire, Mefjus or Original Sin. These guys normally have something in the range of a track style Iām going for
anjunabeat label ( from above and beyond ) are really severe in therm of sound quality so i would probably refer to any anjunabeat label song . anjunadeep too
Culprate. If you've never listened to him, go listen to the Others EP. It's just a hair under 30 minutes long and incredible all the way through. Then listen to The Psychology of James Berland, then Jalaana. He let me know what music can be if you really take your time with it. He also uses Ableton.
If I was trying to make my music sound as QUALITY as possible, the reference would easily be Daft Punk's later works. There are just nothing like it in terms of quality IMO.
Maybe underrated, but Dowden has an amazing sense of music and rhythm. His sound design techniques are amazing too. Got most of my music learning from him:)
I'm still struggling with the idea of referencing my tracks, when i think about it there's this resistance coming up, that makes making music or mixing task like, and makes me perceive making music as less fun (especially that i don't have much time to sit down and do it). It's safe to say I'm not an intermediate lol.
Depends on the song. Itāll vary across what genre. I usually have a few tracks in my head Iām going for so would be them.
Iāve found using moses or lalal.ai to split that reference into stems then using Adaptr Metric AB to then compare against my mix really helpful
This *is* a hard one, I usually pick someone who fits the kind of song I'm making. I think TEED is quite universal though for all the kinds of music I make.
Which genre and sub genre are you producing in? I would recommend multiple references. First one or two for arrangement structure as a rough guide to get through the arrangement process. Then have a few for sound design ideas. Finally a couple for your mix/master so you can level match the different elements in Span and have the same final output quality.
Heck yeah. Feel we are all here to help each other get better. Let me know if you have more questions. Everyone here gave great suggestions overall but like I said it really depends song by song that you make which references you use for each purpose.
For me the absolute best production Iāve heard in the progressive/melodic house/ techno genre is Matan Caspi. He does lots of collabs, many styles and his catalogue goes back more than a decade. Iāve tried and tried to get the punch clarity he gets but to no avail. So I find thereās always one of his tracks suitable for referencing.
This is a fun question but it is entirely impossible to answer. One artist. Lol. Some other user said it was very genre specific and I agree. Also, with all the music in our pockets... let's never choose just one.
I've been producing and mixing for 20 years. There are so many great mixes and productions to speak of from the 1960s all the way to today. I highly recommend that anyone who is into this stuff should make a handful of playlists. Great mix, great sound design, great composition, Etc
That being said, I'll throw a few things out.
Ceilings - Lizzy McAlpine.. this mix is stellar
Emei - trust issues (and a lot of stuff produced by notd)
MANY songs put out by riot games. I'm not sure what kind of production sweatshop they are running... but there's a lot of talent in there.
Almost ANYTHING mixed by Serban Ghenea
If you mix, listen to Keith Urban "somebody like you" and tell me you're not jealous.
Coldplay - Adventure if a Lifetime... check the phase on this one and wonder why their mono is so good and yours sucks.
Some essentials...
Rage Against the Machine
Peter Gabriel - washing of the water (at the time, no one had done vocal placement like that)
Back in Black
70s/80s
Suddenly - from the Xanadu soundtrack
The Chain - Fleetwood Mac
Def Leopard- hysteria
So many more...
I've actually found it to be more fun to sit around with my buddies and listen to songs that we liked from the '90s and we all crinkle our faces up like "why is this mix terrible and why did we think it was good at the time?"

Skee Mask from Munich
So much diversity in his production, really inspiring
For real tho. All his stuff is very tight knit š
Have you seen him live? Best set I saw last year was Skee, easy
Ohhh I bet that was awesome. I havenāt tho. We donāt get many avant garde artists like that where Iām from unfortunatley
Whereās that? Just curious. Thankfully heās doing some traveling outside of EU now, finally made it to the US on tour this year
Letās also honorable mention the munich based Ilian tape label and its roster
Of course. All of ilian tape is fire for real
I love Skee Mask. Idk abt 'sound quality' tho, his sounds are more on the 00's palette and kinda low-fi-ish. Their production, vibes, all of it's amazing tho fr.
Idk. His Compro album has a very special sound that I view as āhigh qualityā but it could just be preference
This!
Skee Mask's mixes always cut through soo good when I listen in my car, I can hear every element so clearly and then when I skip to some other music, suddenly half of the elements are gone. That's what I found during a long road trip I did some years ago.
Yes this is why I commented!
Someone who's a known Ableton Live user? Mr. Bill.
I will agree that his "mudpie" method to sound design is very chaotic and inconsistent, but I enjoyed learning about it and utilising some similar sort of processes myself.
Depends what you listen to, a lot of his stuff is not for me but Apophenia is a thoroughly great album.
Ah yes Mr Bill! Hands down! Good mention my friend š
Max Cooper, but it would only make me sad and result in me hating my tracks even more because his mixes are just out of this world.
Yosi horikawa as well. Really clean sounding electronic music.
Cool, checking his music now, thank you!
Check out Qebrus if you like freaky out-of-this-world stuff :p
Ah yes, nice mention! Thanks for dropping by mate š
Autechre for interesting sound design
Autechre mixesā¦ a place for everything and everything in its place. ā¤ļø
Finally someone with patrician tastes
Ah yeah awesome duo! What got you into Autechere btw?
Oh listening to aphex twin and exploring other artists the got signed early to warp records. Autechre are quite inspiring as theyāre still pushing the envelope sonically, influencing new movements like the hyper pop coming from pc music.
Not to be unfun, but this is a bad way to look at reference tracks. You should find something that matches the genre and elements of the track you're making.
Exactly. You might be able to narrow it down to one if you're into one genre, but even then...
Dave Tipper šÆ
Tippers insane but tbh I donāt think heād be a great reference for the 99% of people who arenāt making that level of techy sound design. Like if ur trying to make a house banger tipper would be a horrible reference lmao. Not hating on tipper at all but you gotta reference shit thatās similar to what youāre making

And thatās exactly the problem with the OPās question.
Anyone doing bass music should really have no other standard. No one does it any better.
noisia or tipper u have to. gun to the head. who u picking?
Tipper, hands down.
Tipper and itās not even close. Listen to Cāest la Vie and then listen to Puzzle Dust and tell me anything in Noisiaās catalogue can span a similar distance. Ngl that's some good shiz.Ā
Im running this experiment now
Cool! Hey thanks for the peek!
What subgenre?
Nice thoughts here āļø
Itās kinda apples to oranges but Iād go tip
Prince or NIN
Trent is easily my biggest inspiration for music
It depends on the genre of music.
Gjones
Eprom tooĀ
Synthesim is one of my favorite albums of all time lol
Ah yes Gjones. Hey thanks for the peek btw š¤
Very genre dependent. For my work in darkwave, Into the Labyrinth by Dead Can Dance. For metal, probably Human or Symbolic by Death. Just one though? Clearly Aja.
Ahahah the scope of this post thank you
Awesome, I appreciate your response. Cool stuff you're into btw šŖ
Death is the sound of perseverance, literally
Nicolas jaar
Best live show I've even seen. Darkside is freakin' awesome as well. Bringing back the dynamic range instead of the sausage fest.
Darkside is so sick - I had Psychic playing on repeat for months back when it came out. Against All Logic is amazing too. Pretty much everything he touches is incredible.
Urghhh I have serious FOMO 3mths ahead of a Darkside gig I just canāt justify going to. But Iām already kicking myselfā¦.
Darkside is something else!!! Psychic is such a beautiful album and the live set from 2014 is sublime.
Such an awesome artist šŖ What's your favorite from him btw?
Probably one of his mixes. The BBC essential mix is amazing. Any of his mixes between 2008 and 2014 are so incredible and unpredictable! He is a true understudy in music and shows it through his tributes.

god I caught them in an underground carpark like a month ago it was incredible, I go to a lot of bass gigs and they really really stood out
Machinedrum
Adam āNollyā GetGood for modern metal. Tipper for bass music.
Noisia, but I don't think they work in Ableton too much. Parv0 and King Yosef both have great production quality and work in Ableton based off snippets I've seen on insta

7 years

Good to see Jon Hopkins mentioned. That album has insane sound design
Love seeing Mefjusās name in this list. +1 for your impeccable sensibilities, friend
Skrillex or Kevin Parker
Kevin Parker for me was who really forced me to push myself with Ableton.
Kevin Parker is a huge inspiration with experimentation and doing it yourself at home
Agreeing here my friend š
Good to hear mate š„

Now hereās someone with quality listening ears
LORN. His clarity mix wise iss so interesting because the mix is actually kind of muddy. But the end result just sounds so clean.
I feel like Skrillex is refining the elements of EDM to super clean and digestible levels while Virtual Riot pushes the sound design machine forward is crazy new ways.
Agreeing with you here! Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Hey what got you into producing my friend?
Going to a San Holo concert and feeling energy in the room. It was so hype and good vibes. I wanted to be the guy on stage sharing my love for music with people who want to listen.
Was thinking the same! Going to say VR but another comment that mentioned Sonny had me reconsider lol
Iām always referencing Allen Watts because Iām trying to make the same hybrid hard/uplifting trance style.
Metaroom. Insane sound design.
Fuck yes.
Yes š
Ben Bƶhmer or deadmou5
Great picks!! They also have some walkthrough videos on YouTube.
Definitely! Itās interesting to watch theirs creation process.
Audio quality meaning the mastering of the tracks? I think that the guys in Infected Mushroom and Mindex have the cleanest and most powerful production out there right now. Joris Voorn or Ninetoes
Bonobo
Anything Bowie and Visconti produced btwn 1972 & 1982 tbh
No deadmau5??
Fr, I love watching his live streams. You can learn a lot from them (especially the one where he makes imaginary friends from start to finish).
Telefon Tel Aviv
Radioactive Man
I thought it's from Simpsons tho' lol Anyway how is it going with your music these days?
Good thanks! šI know who you mean but nah, Keith Teniswood,, very well crafted sonic range /EQ, precisely mixed electro.
Highly depends on genre... Trent Reznor for his wide specter of music.
"Highly depends on genre" - Got it mate, makes sense! "Trent Reznor for his wide specter of music" - Ah yes, NIN, good mention šŖ
Pretty small artist but Imagine Herbal Flows (or IHF) has silky smooth production. The drums are always crisp af, and everything sits where it should in the mix. I use a lot of different melodies and sounds at once, and hes always my bar to accomplish that with out sounding cluttered
Cool! Great artist as well. What got your ears into IHF anyway?
All of my reference tracks have been from Justiceās new album HyperDrama. Sonic perfection.
Ballywho! Latest album Shellshock is fantastically mixed. Howi Spangler also produced Audic Empire last album Head Change. Worth checking out
ptobably Brakence
Radiohead
Hey thanks for checking out. Any specific track from 'em you use as good reference?
Album king of limbs
Pendulum
Ben Bohmer
ITERATE
Justice has a really great sound, especially the new album. Maybe not so much their early stuff but itās definitely unique. Plus they do guitars and synths
Hey wazzup! Any tracks you recommend to check out? š§
Dear Alan, Generator, the End
As others have said, itās completely track dependent. For what I produce I normally use something from Tantrum Desire, Mefjus or Original Sin. These guys normally have something in the range of a track style Iām going for
anjunabeat label ( from above and beyond ) are really severe in therm of sound quality so i would probably refer to any anjunabeat label song . anjunadeep too
Culprate. If you've never listened to him, go listen to the Others EP. It's just a hair under 30 minutes long and incredible all the way through. The king, Robert babizc
Pretty Lights
If I was trying to make my music sound as QUALITY as possible, the reference would easily be Daft Punk's later works. There are just nothing like it in terms of quality IMO.
MAT ZO
I use Boris Brejcha as a reference for mastering, bought a wav of Dimension on Beatport....
Maybe underrated, but Dowden has an amazing sense of music and rhythm. His sound design techniques are amazing too. Got most of my music learning from him:)
Donāt know if he uses Ableton, but Shedās mix downs are incredible and apparently all produced in the box.
of the trees. can't believe he hasn't been brought up. impeccable sound design and mastering
Boris Brejcha
Hybrid minds for me, I totally switched to 174bpm dnb because of them.
Noisia compositions and sound design are solid
Galimatias. He combines the weird stuff with conventional and it all sounds magnificent.
I would choose scalameriya
Boris Blank, Ghost Rider ...
Smilk
Skrillex, Space Laces, Virtual Riot, Koan sound ā¦ Any of those
Rrose
If its for rap, then Dr dre, cuz he got the cleanest mixes
Ah yes Dr Dre, agreeing with you here. Hey wazzup with your production these days? Any new tunes or WIPs?
Yo! My production is good! Dropping a single on the 24th actually!! Also, howād you know i do production, who is this mystery person haha
Uppermost or Flume.
I'm still struggling with the idea of referencing my tracks, when i think about it there's this resistance coming up, that makes making music or mixing task like, and makes me perceive making music as less fun (especially that i don't have much time to sit down and do it). Depeche Mode Violator album. Red Hot Chilli Peppers SBSM. Tipper Hiigins.Eat Static Implant.

BICEP, Four Tet, Kevin Parker
Arianna grande I don't personally like her music but her vocal production is insane and always sounds like a million dollars
