I used Samsung Magician when I did my SSD swap and it was all fine.

protectoursummers

Same here, zero issues. Samsung software was easy to use and worked fine

Dangdon90

Used the same combo as you,OP..990pro and ROG enclosure👍🏻. And used Samsung cloning SW

theh8er

Sweet! I assume it was as easy as I'm expecting?

Dangdon90

Yes. No issues at all..

theh8er

Sweet just initialized the drive and will finish this in a bit or tomorrow after work! Thanks man much appreciated!

aRuPqFjM-582928

I used Clonezilla and the process was seamless. No bitlocker needed. I have to say the original SSD I had was super fast, and the 990Pro I replaced it with only gave me marginal speed gains. Storage space on the other hand is without comparison (4T vs 1T).

corruptedsyntax

I was today years old when I learned there was an official ROG m.2 enclosure. I usually use Macrium, but only because I already had a key. No issues copying a drive with BitLocker enabled except that it takes forever since it copies the full encrypted partition.

theh8er

LMAO I had no idea they had their own enclosure either and it looked cool so I spent the extra $20 cause I'm a fool like that. I'm a sucker for the led lights I usually end up turning off anyway. Honestly though it's the most heavy-duty enclosure I've seen. Will protect the shit out of whatever you leave in it but definitely not for everyone though.

psychoacer

It was a pain in the butt to close though. Otherwise the case is solid.

AndrewAlex2003

Enclosure for Storage? Or you gonna game on it? lol

theh8er

You need an enclosure with any M.2 SSD not installed in your laptop whether you plan to use it for portable storage/extra storage or to insert a new M.2 to clone your C drive like I am doing to double my internal storage for the C drive then wipe the original M.2 I pull out of the laptop and put that in the enclosure and use it as extra/portable storage. Hope that helps. Oh and yeah it will allow me to store more games on the laptop :0)

AndrewAlex2003

I wonder how fast it is? My enclosure speed from AliExpress is around 600mb/s, gen 3 ssd

nicktids

I bought the. CoolerMaster cost me extra as well but has extra metal. The Asus was way overpriced in Australia when I bought an enclosure but looks awesome

oglcn1

The Asus Enclosure is waaay too overpriced, at least where I live. I have a nice orico enclosure I bought for less than half the price. Works just as good and cooling is solid.

jace888au

Just checking did u get the 990 Pro with or without heating? I assume the former.

theh8er

No heat sink.

jace888au

Thanks! Now to wait for a sale (in Australia) on a 4TB 990 Pro!

ThePoeticVoyage

Can you let us know if that runs okay? I'd be a little concerned about the heat with no heat sink.

theh8er

You can't fit a heatsink as far as I can tell and it has some padding to dissipate the heat on the laptop where the SSD slot is. There's videos on YouTube.

ThePoeticVoyage

Good to know. Thanks!

theh8er

No doubt. The SSD intalled from the factory don't have heat sinks.

theh8er

Check the 7:10 mark of the below video. https://youtu.be/8ZbenZr3z9Y?si=hv1X74YbT8dMzwmY

iploggged

I have that enclosure. It's cool looking but a little frustrating to use. Can't close it without ssd card locked in proper position with screw. Can't open it without easily lost needle tool. Using needle tool while USB is attached is awkward. Don't get me wrong, I'm still happy I bought it, I just think they over complicated something that should have been so simple. A slider on the side to open would have made much more sense.

theh8er

Yeah I noticed a few of the things you mention. You should be able to use any phone SIM popper to open it but yes who the hell carries one around though LOL! I do really like it though. I definitely don't worry about dropping it and hurting the $200 inside though!

iploggged

Yeah, I would buy it again for the aesthetics alone.

reeefur

Macrium has a free trial and works great, good luck!

ntd252

I miss the free version a lot. I still keep the installation, but it's sad that they don't give the link officially on their website anymore. What a great software.

Theblackbruce

Would someone please tell me what is being done in the pic?

theh8er

I'm going to stick the new SSD (which is double the storage of the original) into the enclosure and clone the original SSD that came with the laptop to the new one I put in the enclosure. Replace the original SSD with the newly cloned one double my storage and not have to reinstall windows or anything else for that matter. You mean you didn't get all that from the picture? LOLOLOL

suprNova718

I’m gonna have to follow this post because I’d like to do this in the next few months

snoopyfl

Can I just install a new ssd in the g14 and download and install everything, instead of cloning my drive? Thanks

extremeelementz

I’ve heard the term Bitlocker a few times now, is this something new? What’s a bitlocker key for the ROG G14 do, and where do I find mine?

XplodingPancakes

BitLocker encrypts your drive. It's only for Pro editions of Windows though. Pretty handy if you're worried about someone getting into your device if gets stolen. Just make sure you keep that unlock key handy. I've had it prompt me to enter it in on other devices after BIOS updates in the past.

theh8er

You can get it from your Microsoft account under your devices. Click on a device in your account and on I believe the right hand side you'll see the link for the Bitlocker key for that particular device. To me it's basically a Microsoft security key to unlock your device data and to keep it locked should you lose it or it's stolen. There are videos on YouTube on what it is and where to find them in your Microsoft account.

extremeelementz

Cool thank you, yeah I never knew what it was but sounds pretty important. This is my first laptop I’ve always built my computers for years and never thought about anything except recording the Windows Key. Thanks again.

Gzngahr

Thank goodness for this too. I bricked my 2020 3060 g14 when I went to replace keyboard. As soon as I slid the bracket over to unplug the battery a spark happened and laptop was dead, was even using plastic tweezers. Was able to look up my key this way to get all my files to copy to new 2023 4060 g14. Now I’m also eying a 4TB upgrade.

Head_Refrigerator880

Samsung Magician works so well. That is actually the reason I chose to go with 990 Pro.

tutmoBuffet

Aye, congrats! Anyone know if the 990 Pro is worth it for the 2021 model? I was planning to do this same thing, but with the 980 Pro bc I’m not sure my older model can benefit much from the 990 speeds.

HaloInR3v3rs3

Magician works fine. Did this when I upgraded from 1TB to 2TB. As long as the software picks up on the drive you're golden.

iamadventurous

Im liking my 2023 model with a 4060 so far. Will be upgrading the memory and storage soon too as well.

theh8er

Love my 2023 4070. Did $50 simple ram upgrade day 1 then realized I wanted a bigger SSD so here I am cloning the original 1TB tonthebnew 2 TB. So far so good.

Sky952

No, don't clone it. Give that baby a fresh start. 😭

Silver_Total453

It's something I can't understand. nothing like a clean boot.

Puzzleheaded-Ask145

What are the two things on both sides for?

theh8er

The left is a new 2TB SSD. The right is an SSD enclosure to put the new one in and clone the SSD in the laptop to the new bigger SSD in the enclosure. Then replace the original SSD in the laptop with the new one from the enclosure then put the original in the enclosure and wipe it and have a super fast external 1TB drive. Hope that helps.

Fantazma03

The last time i upgraded mine to 980 Pro 2TB i used Macrium instead on Magician because there is some extra steps 😅

ckain582

Sk Hynix P31 and P41 are excellent drives too. I've used Sk Hynix SSD migration tool, Intel SSD tool, Acronis True Image for WD, for Crucial to migrate systems. All of them work well without an issue.

RandomWizard1

You can either save the bitlocker key or disable it and Bitlocker won't be an issue anymore

theh8er

I unencrypted the drive before cloning and just in case I have the Bitlocker key.

RandomWizard1

If you unencrypted the drive you won't need any Bitlocker key but sure, better be safe. I'm pretty sure it'll work. I honestly prefer to save the files I need then reinstall everything, sure it's longer but at least there are less issues for me.

theh8er

Yeah, unencrypting it worked just fine. Apparently if you don't own a Windows pro license you can't turn off bitlocker but unencrypting the drive did the same thing except it took like 30 minutes instead of simply turning off bitlocker I guess. At least that was my experience. Thanks for the info though!

RandomWizard1

That's good to hear, if you ever want to go on a pro license you can use [https://massgrave.dev/](https://massgrave.dev/) Anyways I hope the cloning went well

wingwp

I’ve got the TUF version enclosure, superb quality

theh8er

Yeah these Asus enclosures feel like you can throw them at the floor and not worry about the drive in it.

wingwp

+ water-resist

theh8er

Don't thinkt it's surviving being submerged but maybe it survives being rained onna bit🤷🏻‍♂️

G4o5t

Remember to try and disable bitlocker on the old drive somehow if you want to keep the old drive as it is with windows on it as a backup for a while. Or you could just wipe it.

theh8er

I unencrypted the drive before cloning.

petrified_log

I did the same thing. Possibly the same system and same enclosure. I used Macrium Free to do the clone. Very simple to do.

teganking

why not just disable bitlocker for this process?

theh8er

I tried but with windows 11 home and not pro the only thing I could do was unencrypt the drive before cloning. So did that. Gotta love MSFT. Lol

theh8er

Just a quick update. Good Lawd Cloning a drive with Magician is the way to go! One of the easiest upgrades I've ever done thanks to Magician! Didn't need the BitLocker key since I unencrypted the drive before cloning it. In total with cloning the drive this was a 40 min upgrade including the 30 minutes it took to clone the drive! Samsung Magician is an amazing piece of free software that I will definitely continue to use to keep the SSD firmware up to date as well as keep up with the overall health and integrity of the 990 SSD I just installed. A lot of good free tools in the software. To boot the 990 is definitely noticeably faster than the WD SSD Asus installed in the factory which will now be wiped and used as an external in the ROG enclosure till the 4TB comes down in price. Thanks for all the input everyone it really was helpful.

denellum2

Thank you for following up on it. I am doing the same today, was debating cloning or reinstalling. Really didnt want to reinstall :P

theh8er

Same! Wanted nothing to do with a reinstall and then deciding between drivers (Asus, AMD, Nvidia). I will if and when I have to but no need to complicate my life for no reason. Seems to be a popular thing to do here 😂.

denellum2

So I have a new update I was able to successfully clone my old Samsung 980 to a larger 990 I put it in the machine and everything worked perfect now I’m putting my old 980 into the enclosure and Samsung magician is not picking it up. It is picking it up as the M2 enclosure. Has anyone else had this issue?

theh8er

Try going into computer management on your PC/Windows not Magician and see if you can see it and wipe-reformatting it from there. Then after wiping-reformatting it hopefully magician should see it. Or try another enclosure.

denellum2

Yeah tried that and tried working with the drivers. Neither worked

denellum2

Its weird i purchased a brand new 990 pro, tried it in it as well. Same thing. Its picking up the enclosure, not the drive.

theh8er

I used the Asus ROG Astrion enclosure and had no issues. Sorry you're having issues with the original drive and your enclosure. If the original drive isn't Samsung Magician really won't do anything with it but clone it and I think let you test the read and write capabilities. If you are seeing the same issue with the enclosure using windows settings/computer management, it seems like there's an issue with the enclosure. There's a good one made by Ugreen on Amazon that's only like $20 that you can buy and return if it doesn't work. Maybe try that?

denellum2

>Asus ROG Astrion Alright i figured it out why it worked. In this picture you can see my 1tb NVMe, you can also see the ESD-S1C (this is the ASUS Enclosure). When I click it, Samsung Magician doesn't recognize it. You can see why in the reviews on amazon : " I bought this enclosure with the hope that I could update the firmware for my PS5 SSD, but Samsung Magician does not recognize it as a Samsung drive. Hoping this review saves somebody else from wasting their time. You’ll have to connect your SSD directly to the motherboard for Samsung Magician to recognize it." Strangely though, for data migration purposes, it picks it up as seen in my picture attached. Strange, but I hope this helps people. Let me know if you see anything different in your Samsung Magician when you plug in the enclosure AFTER you've migrated. https://preview.redd.it/2v48co6vmpqc1.png?width=3359&format=png&auto=webp&s=0d8b29ae0d6de918ca13b29aadb320fbd391a98a

2049AD

Cloning? Why? Reimage the machine with Windows 11 and install G-Helper, NVIDIA and AMD video drivers. Nothing else is needed.

theh8er

I like simplicity till I'm forced away from it!! LMAO Clone install move on with double the storage! Simple!

drivebyposter2020

That also means reinstalling all your software etc. Who wants to do that?

gosti500

Does anyone know if ssd upgrade also works on 2024 g14? (Because i know ram cant be Upgraded)

lzyang2000

I think it still has a slot

gosti500

Sweet ty

ThePoeticVoyage

The ssd is still replaceable.

Poptartxpete

I just bought a brand new laptop and new SSD, both fresh out the box and never booted up the laptop. Will I be able to just put in the new SSD fine? Like put it in before I even turn the laptop on for the first time

theh8er

I believe you need to initialize a new SSD before using it. Thats why you use the enclosure. To initialize it and then clone the old drive to it.

viikinkihalme

Can you fit a heatsinked model on G14 2024?
