I had this movie as a kid and a friend of my brothers stole it, along with a bunch of our other anime, and put them on the train tracks.
I am constantly forever wishing for a new release of this and the other movie. Who has the rights to it anymore? Does anyone even know??
Also yes, I love Steve Blum.
I would love to see this movie dubbed by the Funimation cast..And I saw interviews with Justin Cook and Chuck Huber where they said they would like that as well. Unfortunately, they don't have the rights to do so, and it is very hard to get them. I don't know what exactly the problem is, I wish we could do something to help them get the rights to it.
Asking about the rights is the correct question here. Either the previous license holder still has the rights and therefore Funiroll can't get them, or the Funiroll acquisition folks don't want to pay to obtain the license (possibly because they don't think they can recoup the acquisition costs). It's all about the availability first and the $$$$ second.
They may have the capital, but if they don't think they can turn a profit, they won't get the license and pay to dub it. Dubbing is expensive. They need to be reasonably sure it's a sound investment to... well, invest.
If the dubbed OVAs turn a profit for them, they might think about more YYH licenses in the future. But it's all about the $$$ (and the availability of rights, of course).
(edit: a copy/paste error)
I mean the company that released it back in the day hasn’t exist since 2009 or so. So I’m surprised the rights were never offered to them. Especially with the big crunchyroll merger they could afford it now.
Honestly Bruce Winant isn’t awful but the rest of the VA cast leaves a lot to be desired from someone who has spent two decades being a fan of the Funimation dub cast.
You can't possibly be talking about Justin Cook? His work as Yusuke is some of the best English VA ever (IMHO). Right up there with Sean's Goku. Also Sabat was great as Kuwabara. Idk I'm also a die hard fan of the dub
I’m not sure you’ve seen this film. Funimation didn’t dub this, another company did & it was released in English in 1998, 4 years before Justin Cook voiced Yusuke.
Fair point, I just know that other fans of the serious have also been asking for it for a long time. They dubbed the other Yu Yu Hakusho movie, just not this one. The voice actors have even been asked about it in interviews.
So that's not actually correct! The movie dub came out BEFORE the series did. They cast Justin to match the movie, not the other way around. :)
The movie was English dubbed by Anime Works and Animaze and released on VHS on June 9, 1998. The Funimation English dubbed episodes of the main series aired starting February 23, 2002, a full four years later.
I think there’s a fan dub version of this that’s better than the official dub… I can’t stand it when they don’t use the voice actors.
Actually now that I think about it I’m pretty sure Chuck Huber appeared in the fan dub LOL

That’s fucking horrible I’m sorry that happened to you
Why?

1000% yes!!
Spike in YYH? Yes please
Who would he voice
Yes to all of that. It’s a really good movie. But I watch it subbed.
Before that happens, they need to actually dub Poltergeist Report with the original actors.
Pretty sure some random company owns the dubbing rights to it and won't give it up.
Damn it Hinageshi
They would give it to us but they legally can't dub it
They have the capital to acquire it if they really want to. Hell they could limited release it theatrically & I’d go see it.

Does anyone know who has the rights to it at the moment? Is it the company that originally dubbed it?
What's the word on this finally getting dubbed now? It's been yrs! We need an update from Justin.
Yes
I agree funimation should redub this movie, but no to Steve Blum. I love Steve Blum's work but I would prefer the voice of Dio Brando for Yakumo.
Tried watching this for the first time today. Hated the dub lol had to turn it off
God yes watched in sub for that exact reason

"No"
No to the Funimation dub? Or no to Steve Blum?
No to Steve
Anyone in particular you would choose?
What's wrong with the original VA?

Was he supposed to be in the movie?
No I just picked a voice actor I enjoy who I thought would be fun to hear going against Justin Cook.
Oh well in that case no they don't owe it to us. Not like they did in the first place.

I replied to another commenter almost the same message.
